Help Please! I need to reflash my galaxy nexus to jelly bean. It freezes (doesn't reboot) whenever i try to download the system update. I am a total newbe and not technically proficient. If someone could provide step-by-step instructions on how for reflashing the phone with jelly bean that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

did you try to flash something and thats when the problem happened? Also do you have sprint, verizon or a gsm nexus? This will at least give a good starting point for help.

I am in Canada. My provider is Telus. The problem occurred when my phone received the "install system update" notification (to install the new jellybean software operating system). I went through the prompts and clicked "install and reboot". When the phone powered down and tried to reboot, the phone froze at the "Google" on black screen stage. I then had to take battery out and power up phone. Software did not update - it is still at the 4.0 software and did not get to 4.1 (jellybean). I have spoken to technical support at both Telus and Samsung and they say this is a software problem in the phone and I need to bring it in for manufacturer to repair - but then I would get a loaner phone and be w/o a proper phone for weeks. I want to avoid that if possible if I can somehow fix this on my own - with your help of course.

Because generally speaking, four out of five people are retarded.
Back OT, Telus is a gsm service provider, this guy "could" do stock or just root it, flash clockwork recovery and then flash aokp. Efrants suggestion about stock roms is excellent too. It really comes down to which route this user prefers to take.

Good thing Telus is actually a GSM provider or that might have been bad advice.. SIM presence does not imply GSM - new CDMA devices are rolling with LTE which requires a SIM for network authentication. Toro and toroplus are both in this boat.

I stand corrected on toroplus. But your assumption of a SIM card defining a GSM phone was incorrect, and set the stage for problems if Telus was not a GSM provider.

What Winesnob was saying is that BOTH the GSM Galaxy Nexus and the Verizon Galaxy Nexus have SIM cards, so asking if it has a SIM card does not differentiate between the two. (Actually, if I'm not mistaken, I think the Sprint Galaxy Nexus also has a SIM card, but it is enclosed, i.e., no slot.)

You would think Google would...
You would think Google would include a utility that would reinitialize the secure element when needed. Nothing to access the contents but just erase everything and format it like new. But, it would probably leave an open door for access somehow.
So no one who rooted get the money yet? That was one of the main reasons I bought this phone was so that I could get the extra $50. I don't want to lose it just because I flashed a ROM.

I guess they wouldn't consider it "secure" then lol.
The secure element contains a bunch of unique keys tied to your MEID that are used to facilitate secure communication with the servers. If you wiped its contents, you'd lose those keys and you thus access to google wallet.
The secure element has countermeasures that are designed to prevent somebody from stealing those keys and therefore being able to steal your money. If the secure element detects tampering, it destroys itself to protect that information.

After Days/ Weeks of scouring the interweb for the mods to use your own PRL on the new Galaxy Nexus without any luck I've tried a method that worked on my previous phones.
I decided to take the leap and try it on the Nexus and it worked. I have horrible sprint coverage at work and can't even get 3g, but you cannot force the phone to roam to a nearby Verizon tower. Now after this method I have full bars, 3G and 1.9 MB download speeds.
As always I'm not liable for anything that could happen to your phone or Contract. If you want to switch back just follow step 2 with a sprint PRL or use "Update PRL" in about phone if its included with your ROM. (Flash back to stock if not)
I can't find the previous thread as it was so long ago but here is exactly what I did.
1) Get Any Cut from the Google play store.
2) Put the PRL you want to use on the root of your Internal Storage and rename the file to Test.prl *Make sure you unzip the prl and put it on the root of your internal storage. Ex. Take 00001.prl out of the zip file and rename it test.prl. (Some people have noted that TEST must be capitalized, it isn't for me but if it fixed it for those users there's no harm in trying.
3) Create a new shortcut in Any Cut, Click Activity, scroll down and select PRL Write.
4) Go to your home screen with the shortcut on it and click it. After a few seconds your phone will restart.
5) Check your PRL version in About phone and it should reflect the change. Note: it may take a minute to update.
6) Profit.
I'm in awe that this worked so easily and the first time as many of you know changing a PRL is usually not for the faint of heart. So I'm still a bit skeptical but "Not Roam control" also says I'm on the Verizon Network. If you try this please post back with your results. Also please make sure you know your coverage on Sprint vs. Verizon in your area. You won't notice any difference if your sprint coverage for your area is better than Verizon. In Ohio ( My area anyway) Sprint coverage is terrible, but Verizon is amazing.
I use 00001.prl and 00002.prl which are modified Verizon prls that will not return the roaming indication.
Users have also noted that the Rom and Kernel Versions may cause some issues with the Write PRL in Anycut. I'm using Black ICE 34.70 and Francos Kernel Milestone 3 and don't have any issues.
I have made a nice little shortcut system using Tasker. Since I dont have the "Update PRL" on my rom. All I need to do is change home screens click whichever PRL I want to run then hit Write PRL and phone reboots with the correct PRL.
Here's How:
Create two folders on the root of your internal Storage, one called Sprint, one called Verizon (Or whatever you want that describes your PRL).
Inside those folders drop the respective PRL files already renamed "test.prl".
Using Tasker or any other app that supports deleting/coping files, create a new Task Called "SprintPRL".
Add two Actions, the first is a Delete File, File location is /sdcard/test.prl
Second Action, Copy File From Sprint/test.prl To /sdcard
Now do the same thing for your second PRL changing the Copy file From location to point to the second location.
Now you have two tasks that will delete the file on your Internal Storage and copy the PRL you want in its place.
Using this method has some nice perks as you can set Tasker up to fire off when you are in a certain area you know you have bad sprint coverage. I'm going to do some research today to see if I can trigger the PRL update activity from Tasker and make it completely hands free.
I have used some NFC Tags and NFC Task Launcher to Fire off these but I still have to manually click the update PRL shortcut with Anycut. Once I solve that problem I'll post it here as well.
Enjoy Guys n Gals!

--==WARNING==--You will get calls from Sprint if you use this PRL and stream/Download a bunch of Music/ Movies every month for 3+ months. The data limit is 300MB per month before you get flagged. I've got three warning calls for all of my lines but they have yet to disconnect me so don't be paranoid that Sprint will just cancel you. I've set my Data limit on my phone to 300 MB/month and/or used a firewall app from the market to limit which apps have access to 3G to help prevent this, especially on my Sons line.
Here is a thread with all the current PRLS. Thanks R1ptide

I have heard that using GLaDOS Control its possible to unlock and lock the bootloader on a Galaxy Nexus. So.. Here's my situation lol I don't have a computer at the moment. I'm going to be ordering a G-Nex shortly and I need root and unlocked bootloader.. I remember some devices (like my old G2 and GS1) you could temp root from the device via an app or terminal emulator commands and downloaded packages and then perm root through more commands in terminal emulator.
Is it possible for such a thing to be possible with the G-Nex? Gain temp root through terminal emulator commands and downloaded files and then use GLaDOS Control to unlock the bootloader, then download ROM manager and flash CWM, then download the SU and busy box binaries and flash them through CWM, and then enjoy my Nexus?
Or am I just shooting blindly in the dark? I really want CM9 and MIUI and maybe to try AOKP as I've heard so much about it.. But without a computer that seems impossible! :-(

Not sure what GlaDOS Control does, but it certainly cannot unlock or relock the bootloader. Only a connection to a computer can do that.
But yes, you can do everything you want, but I don't understand why?
1) You can root without unlocking the bootloader, see here.
2) But there is no need, as a GNEx comes with an unlockable/relockable bootloader.

Lol my friend, I am looking to do all this without a computer. And according to the developer of the GLaDOS kernel and the app GLaDOS Control, the app has the ability to unlock and re-lock at will.. I've been doing a lot of reading (he posts his Nexus stuff only on the other main android rooting site) and his users have stated the unlocking and re-locking works as intended.. But the app requires root to function.
I don't have a computer at the moment.. But I would very much love to have a way to root without a computer. Do you understand?

Much obliged sir! This is exactly what I was talking about.. Now if there were some way to use terminal emulator to gain temp root via an exploit and then use GLaDOS Control to unlock the bootloader you could theoretically have done it all without a computer. And that would be not only amazing but useful to many people in my situation where access to a computer is incredibly limited and sometimes impossible.

You need to flash an unsecure boot.img though and the only way is with a computer + fastboot

I gotcha. And thank you to Efrant (spelling?) for your help as well. I guess I'm just going to have to hijack a library computer or something and pray it allows installs.. Not likely but I can pray lol
I miss that about the G2 and other older devices. On device temp root was a blessing

Hmmm. Interesting. They may have found a way. A bunch of us started looking into it in this thread, but it kinda lost wind. Looks like it is related to flashing the param partition as we had thought.
I'm looking forward to looking into this!

Hi!
I got a galaxy nexus from my boyfriend like 2 months ago and I really didnt used it, i was happy with my iphone, this week I started using it and I liked it more and made it my main phone.
I was reading some forum and it said that the actual version for the GN is JB4.1.1 or at least what most ppl have.. I tryed to check for system updates and it says my phone is up to date. I've tryed a trick that i readed in this forum that if i close some app and use some number to force update it will update, didnt work
About phone shows this:
Model Number: Galaxy Nexus
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband Version: I9250XXLA2
Kernel Version: 3.0.8-gda6252b [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Apr 13 11:35:09 PDT 2012
Build Number: IMM76K.I9250XWLD2
Aparently as i read my phone is from europe, =/ why I have an europe phone if im not there is a mistery
Anyways, I tryed to use search but wow this forum have so much info and is really confused to a person who is really new and not very familiar with android, if someone can tell me at least how to start, will be helpfull
thanks

Well, I think it tells you which version you got in bootloader, but since you got it from Europe, I'm pretty sure it's not yakju or takju
The chances of damaging your phone is really low. It's barely there if you follow his instructions properly. I did this 2 times with no problem (One for myself and one for my friend)
One thing you need to know is that if you don't have the bootloader unlocked, you need to unlock it, which wipes the WHOLE data on your phone and voids your warranty (You can get your warranty back simply by re-locking it.)

A simple way to check what build your phone is:
Go into the Google maps app, click menu> settings> about and you should see it there

Assuming you don't have 4.1 I'm guessing your Vzw. The only way to get it is root, it's really simple and I recommend Jabukabu's method which uses ADB to root.

no. you're incorrect.
the OP has yakjuxw, which does not have the JB update yet. you need to remember there are several variants of the yakju firmware that do not get updated by google, but by samsung.

I know there are variants but I have no idea what these yakju things are? Why are there so many terms? Just say vzw, Sprint, and not sure about the other carriers name. This is why don't like variants, I like exclusive phones.
God these companies need to get in sync and release everything at once.

Being that this is the first T-mobile phone with "offical" JB. Is there anyone out there who could pull the wifi calling system out of this phone and make a zip or apk file so we can try it on other T-mobile phones running JB roms? Thanks!:fingers-crossed:

I do not believe this would work...I know that when I was running JB leaks for my Verizon GS3 the Wifi calling showed up as an option but force closed and would not work...pretty sure it is carrier dependent...

It's TOTALLY carrier dependent, as far as I know. However I am a TMo subscriber... on my international HTC Sensation, I installed wifi calling apk that had been yanked from the TMo ROM, with no problems - I hope it'll work when porting from the TMO GN2 to the Int'l one...

You are correct, it is Carrier dependant and its a feature that Tmobile offers. It used to be able to be pulled from roms and installed (not as an apk cause there were more files it needed to work and the apk installation was not possible), however I see this being a problem in its current state. The reason for that is cause now Tmobile has it built in as a feature in the settings of the rom not as an individual app as before.
Developers would pull the app out with necessary files and offer it for porting to other devices and it was there. I have spent hours on this because I would try different Roms on my vibrant and if they didnt have wifi calling i had to find a way to install it (It was always a flashable zip to get wifi calling). Later I started playing around with insalling ics roms on vibrant and tmobile didnt have any phones with ics yet so there was no wifi calling compatible and devs were having a hard time and it just never happened. I then got the galaxy nexus with jb and went for 8 months without wifi calling (I think at some point the ICS version came out).
When Tmo offered the note 2 and with wifi calling i got excited that someone would be able to extract it and i might be able to get it working on nexus...but then i saw how they have integrated it into rom. It wont even show up in titanium backup as an app. Just the wifi calling settings. Im sure some dev will eventually be able to do it..but i see this taking time as it usually is not a priority for devs. I wish I knew enough to work on it

It is supposed to. I am on unlimited calling and text so I don't really know. I want it more for when I am at work and have no signal, I can plug into the wifi and still get calls and messages. I am in love with the JB roms and don't want to go back to ICS just for wifi calling. ( But I do when at work.:crying

It seems very unlikely that will happen as it's not an app anymore but built into ROM.
