In the days of GB, we have to wipe cache/system/dalvik cache/etc and flash a ROM from zip, but now if we have to flash ICS ROM, I saw the instructions always require user to flash the original ICS fw by flashtool, then start flashing the custom ROM.
As what I know, after wiping all the stuff, the phone became empty and ready for new ROM. So what is the use of flashing the original fw? May someone explains because I'm facing some difficulties in flashing custom ICS ROM. I don't know the reason is I haven't flash original ICS fw first or due to other reasons...
For example, in my case after flashing custom ROM my mobile model shows Xperia Arc s instead of Xperia Arc.
But Actually i own Xperia Arc. The problem is after flashing custom ROM, some sytem information will get lost or change.
So when flashing the custom ROMs we get errors (status 7 installation aborted, etc.,).
So we are flashing the stock ROM to restore the system information and installing the Custom ROM.
Really? Never had that problem...

As much as I have done ROM testing, I never installed original ICS in the first place.

The error appears on ROMs, that check the phone's files first, to make sure you are installing correct ROM on correct phone (and not installing Neo ROM on Arc).
yes i also agree tried almost all ics Xperia arc roms in dev section never had problems like that . make shure you flash the rom for arc on arc and not any other make. i genrally make a cwm backup and then wipe/factory reset,clear cache and then flash the rom. you must follow the devs instruction on OP properly i mean point to point if you dont want any problems you have.

In Custom ROM, u have to wipe things in case some files still be on system from installed ROM.
In CWM mode;
1. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition
2. format system & format data and format cache
3. wipe dalvik cache and battery stats
4. Install rom choosing SD card.
As far as i know, Xperia Arc and Xperia Arc S are quite smilar except processor. Most of the ROM's and Kernel's should be worked both.
It isn'n necessary to go in an official ICS stock ROM , you can flash new rom from another rom wich has the same build that Rom you are going to flash . However , i recommend you to flash ALWAYS original ics firmware , and follow next instructions , i promise you that you NEVER will have a bootloop . I always do on CWM : 3 wipes and format system , 0 BOOTLOOPS
Not every rom needs a fresh flash of the fw. But some roms need the fresh fw because sometimes the kernel and the build version cause issues with the new rom.
Why waste time on reinstalling ICS, if custom ROM deletes it (or whatever ROM you had earlier) automatically anyway?

I presume jj's rom has app2ext built in, but it shouldn't affect the rom. But check on the rom thread.

It will work. That "error" is just a check if a sd partition exists to make use of. Wont affect sysyem if missing.

hi there,
i'm not entirely sure if this will help you but generally speaking i came made a few observations about the fact that some people, mostly repeatingly the same users, encounter problems with their custom roms and/or flashing them, while others don't, albeit they are using the same devices.
i myself use 3 different devices, all rooted and running on pac 4.3, always latest nightly, as there are GT-N7100 - GT-I9100 - Nexus 4
not to the point
a) other than most other users i usually clean cache and dalvik cache as well before and after flashing the new rom and/or new nightly
and never encountrer any problems except those which everybody, using the same rom and nightly encounters.
b) whenever i flash an totally different rom and/or upgrade and/or downgrade to another level of android os, i.e. from 4.2.2 to 4.3, i perform
a clean install, including not only a factory reset, but as well a format sd-card, format cache and format system etc., again i cannot proof
which of these steps make a or the differnce but however, i never have problems others than thosw which everyone has with a version.
c) when using cusome kernels and due to the fact that some roms come with a kernel included, as well as with a custom recovery included,
it is strongly recommended not to forget to flas the kernel again after each flashing the new rom. one good example ist dorimanx kernel
for GT-I9100 which will not boot into recovery and reluctantly boot at all after a new flash of a pac nightly without reflashing the kernel.
d) try to fix permissions on reboot instead of doing it from recovery. one reason is that not every recovery has this option and further i
found that when fixing permissions before the first boot after flashing a new rom, there might be bootloops, albeit i cannot explain exactly
why that should, but however, sometimes it's better to be on the safe sid.
e) try to run whether the lastes version of custom recovery for your device, and or the use the included custom recovery of the rom or the
kernel. this again is one thing that can help to avoid some unexpected and hard to explain bootproblems and/or fc's etc.
hope that i could give you some new ideas how to avoid trouble while using custom roms and other hacks

You must use ICS kernel, either unlock bootloader and install custom ICS kernel, or first install/update to stock ICS and then follow the same method.
i already did 6 times
i already tried 6-7 time to install custom rom when it stuck on sony logo i flashed it with orignal stock rom and tried again but every times same problem arise. now i am not understanding where i missed

Did you install full ICS firmware with kernel prior installing Ultimate HD ROM?

yes i did around 6 times after bootloot i goot in my androing so i flash 2.3.4 gingerbread ftf file again in it

First install stock ICS firmware, Android 4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.587 or 4.1.B.0.431), and then install the custom ROM. Did you do it so? Can you write the file, which you used?
no..i flashed only base version 4.0.2.A
i always flash "LT18i_4.0.2.A.0.58(2.3.4)_HK" after every bootloop, i not tried to flash 4.1.B.587....few month before tried it to flash but i think it is not able to flash because of system partition is is less because of 4.0.2.................well benifit of installing upgraded rom "4.0.4 (4.1.B.0.587 or 4.1.B.0.431)" and are you sure after that i will able to install it..?

Hey guys,
I'm new to the Xperia Arc development and need some help with installing a custom rom. I've done quite a bit of reading but still can't figure out what is wrong and why it's simply not working.
So from what I gathered the steps to ensure a successful flash are:
Firstly flash a stock rom via flashtool ie LT18i_4.1.B.0.587.ftf
flash LT18i_4.1.A.0.562_Kernel > root the device > flash back to LT15a_4.1.B.0.587_Kernel
Then now that the device is rooted, I need to install a recovery such as CWM via RecoverX
So, so far so good as I can access CWM, stock rom works fine as well
So then next step is to unlock the bootloader
pretty sure this worked, as when i tried to unlock it again, it said it failed as it was already unlocked
Now flash a custom kernel, in this case i flashed the 146 FXP CM kernel
This also seemed successful as I was presented with a custom splash screen
So then after custom kernel is installed I enter recovery, wipe the cache and reset factory settings, format the data system and cache as well as wiping the dalvik and battery stats.
After, I installed the custom rom zip file, in this case it was aokp_anzu-ota-eng.kxp_build5 and then google apps and then reboot.
So my problems begin here.
My phone seems to be stuck in the boot process (sometimes), on the "initiating swagger" splash screen and it goes crazy. I've tried flashing this rom with other kernels (fusion 3.9) and sometimes it actually loads up into the rom. But the rom is extremely laggy, applications freeze and close and the wifi never works
So my question is, is there any steps or procedures that I am missing, not doing right or in the correct order?
I don't think it's any hardware issues as wifi works in the stock rom, and it's fairly smooth and fluid.
Also, is there a better way to flash roms so that I don't need to do this entire process of flashing a stock rom, rooting, unlocking bootloader, installing recovery every time I want to flash a new rom? And when I flash a custom kernel first, then flash a custom rom that has a kernel inbuilt (cm10) does the custom rom's kernel replace the one i just flashed, reason for asking is that the instructions say to flash the custom kernels and then the roms, but yeh just hasn't been working for me so not really sure how to do what.
I'd really appreciated any help or insight!

Thanks! I've read your guide (what I based my flashing on) and it seems consistent with what I have done, on the surface of it anyway. If you think I missed or overlooked something, would it be possible to point it out?
If your boot loader is unlocked it's as simple as this...
1. Flash kernel
2. Wipe cache etc
3. Install ROM
...I always reboot before installing anything else as I've found it can break the installation of the ROM.

As ExpirienceD says,just one more thing flash kernel modules if you need to.
So:
1.Flash kernel
2.Full wipe data/cach...etc...
3.Flash ROM
4.Flash kernel modules

As the title says, I keep on having boot loops after flashing any custom JB Roms (Jedi, LiquidSmooth, CM Nightly, Slimbean). I'm not new to flashing roms (I got LG units though, SU660 and KU5900). When I tried flashing ICS Roms, I don't have any problem. But I want JB that bad!
I followed KonstantinKeller's thread of restoring/recovering from a bad flash (going back to GB), rooted following Melvin's thread. Then did all the prerequisites..like the common wiping of data, clear cache & davlik. But then again after flashing JB roms listed above, I keep on having boot loops!
What did I do wrong? This ain't my first time flashing (first time on this phone -T989- though)
I read some posts with almost the same problem, but I don't think I found a solution for this. Any good soul that can extend their help is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I got a bootloop before when trying to flash JB roms and what I did was restore to original state (using the bad flash recovery technique), and then not rooting it but installing cwm through Odin and dirty flashing the Rom in cwm. Once it flashed I used it for a few to make sure that everything was working correctly. Then I got the goo manager app and got twrp. After that I followed all the steps in the OP (Jedi jelly) and flashed the Rom. Now I'm running Jedi jelly 3.1 perfectly. Hope this method helps.

is there any way to reverse the loop that the darkside wipe is causing?
it REALLY sounds like the recovery u are using is TOO OLD. Make sure u are using the latest version of twrp (2.3.3) to flash all jellybean roms.
TWRP is backwards compatible and touch capable, so if you're worried about flashing GB or ICS ROMs it'll do the trick just fine
it is however a requirement for flashing all 4.1 ROMs.
Basic install instructions:
make sure u have root
download goo manager from play
open > menu > install open script recovery
agree to everything, but make sure t989 is in the downloaded image name
reboot to recovery u should see twrp
I have Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc lt15i from 2011 with unlocked bootloader
I flash it with lt15i_4.1.B.0.431_ready to root
after that i root it
after that i flash it with LT15i_4.1.B.0.587_Kernel
and after that i install cwm and recharge battery on 100%
Than I Factory reset Wipe/format system, cache, data, dalvik all that... try to install cm10 and than i got error status 7
anyone know how to solve this?
From where did you download Cm10 and which device are you using?
What you need to do is flash the kernel provided in the cm10..zip folder named as boot.img
1.Extract boot.img from zip file of cm10
2.Enter fastboot using flashtool
3. flash kernel
4. Enter recovery and install Cm10...
5. enjoy...And make sure you leave it for 15mins for it to settle down at first boot...

Basically GB roms have GB kernels, ICS roms have ICS kernels,JB roms have JB kernels and yes wait for it! Cyanogenmod roms have CM kernels:good:There is a couple of exceptions with the new TWRP kernels/recoveries which can multiboot a small number of compatible rom's,but generally the kernel's match the rom.
As thermrpefecto said the kernel for cm10 is in the .zip file you downloded or there are a few compatible kernels in the Development section :good:
Hi guys, i know the title seems quite idiot, but i have big plans for my Arc
Brief, i'm on jelly bean, but i have arc lt15 memory partition (320+400). So since im about to change my rom (always a JB rom), i would also pass to lt18 memory partition, so that i wont have to do it later.
So here is what i would do, please tell me if there is something wrong or if i missed something
1) backup all i need to be saved from destruction
2) download stock ics based rom and copy to sd
3) Install stock ics based kernel
4) from recovery, flash the ics rom
5) after boot up, flash stock lt18 ics .ftf firmware via flashtool, so that i have new partitions (excluding kernel.sin from flashing)
6) kernel should always be the stock based i flashed before, so via recovery i install again the ics rom i downloaded
7) now i download the jb rom i want to install and put to sd
8) flash jb kernel
9) flash jb rom
Is it right? After this looong procedure i will have my jb arc with extended system and user partition?

Mmh... Well anyway i have unlocked bl so i could flash custom jb kernel immediately after stock ics one... and then access recovery from the new one and flash

9) boot it, be patient. Can take 5 mins or more
