[Q] Backup setting with amon ra recovery - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just switched to an evo 4g from an evo shift since my brother just got the new galaxy s 3 and gave me his evo for the time being... i updated the radios and such, and flashed the new version of amon ra, flashed the newest rooted stock rom. this is my first time using amon ra, as i used cwm on the shift, and when backing up a rom with amon ra it lets me check off the items i wanna back up. this is cool, but i'm used to just hitting backup rom and letting it do its thing...
by default it checks off boot, system, data and cache. since i'm on a rom using sd-ext, i know i wanna check that too, but should i check wimax too? i was confused, and the main concern for this whole post is whether i should check wimax when i'm backing up roms with amon ra?
thanks guys!

Its always good to have a backup of ur wimax. I always include wimax in my backups, that way if I accidentally wipe my rsa keys for wimax, I can just do a nandroid restore of them.
When my kids ask, what does this word mean? I tell them to bring me a dictionary........Then I smack them with it, and tell them to Google that sh¡t.

Whenever you do a backup, its always best to back-up everything,if you dont, you will have problems,or you might need to reconfigure something.

amon ra vs clockwork 4g keys???

I have heard that amon keeps 4g keys in the nandroid back-up but clockwork does not. Also, I have heard that clockwork will not wipe all the way/correctly. I use amon right now because of the 4g but would like to to use clockwork for go from nightly to nightly.
If someone could dispell what is rumor and what is not that would be great.

I use Amon_RA because it does a better job of nandroid backups -- in my brief experience -- including backup of the entire WiMax partition, not just the keys. I can't speak to CWM's ability/inability to wipe entirely/correctly/"all the way." It seems to me that Amon_RA is the "standard" for a reason, but that's my experience. YMMV.
As for loading new nightlies, why not simply download the new nightly to your SD card and flash? I trust that method more, since I can wipe cache/dalvik/data if I choose, and do it "by hand" for surety.

[Q] Which is better ClockworkMod or Amon-Ra recovery for EVO 4G recovery

I have read other threads in regards to this but nothing up to date. I wanted to know what is recommended now especially since gingerbread is out. And another question is if I do a nandroid backup in CW can I restore in Ra??

Personally I like Amon-Ra better & I believe if you do a backup w/ one recovery you can't restore w/ another one.
IN RA what is the USB-ms Toggle.

It mounts your SD card on a conputer

I like Amon RA better. I have never had a problem with it. I'm still running 1.8 with out any issues and I flash a lot.

SO i guess the upside to USB-ms toggle that you can mount your sd card while in recovery mode.
Which has better support though CW or RA.. I have read on other posts that RA will not be around much longer. And also that some have dual booted these two together..
its all preferance, both do the same thing, and both are not interchangable when it comes to nandroid backups, that should answer everything
Amon is better looking, but clockwork has support from rom manager. Both backup your wimax keys now.

Most people on the forums like Amon Ra more. It is less glitchy than CW and it has never let me down. (Clockwork mod totally messed up my Evo once)
But if you want to be a newb and use Rom Manager instead of flashing in the recovery, you need to use ClockworkMod.
I prefer Amon RA
I use Amon's because it is compatible with Fresh Evo.
Clockwork has issues with Fresh Evo. Also, being able to mount SD from recovery is very very nice.
I prefer Amon_RA for two reasons:
1) Its layout makes more sense to me.
2) Selective backup. In CMR you backup your /data, /cache, /system, /boot, wimax, and .android_secure folders/partitions every time, no matter what. In Amon_RA, I can tell it to just backup /data, /system, and /boot, cutting down the size of a backup from 30-50%, nevermind the time it takes to backup/restore. Let's face it, you DON'T need to backup your WiMAX every day, backing up cache is pointless (because the ROM/kernel can just rebuild it later), and .android_secure is on the SD card already (if your SD card goes, how are you going to restore your nandroid anyways?).
And a half-reason: Amon_RA still supports amend and edify scripts, so files like FORMAT_ALL.zip work for it, but not CMR.
Having said that, if you're looking for an easier time, and don't mind pruning your SD card more often, ClockworkMod Recovery is your choice, since it integrates completely with ROM Manager. You just select a ROM in ROM Manager, let it download, tell it to wipe and backup, then come back to your phone in a few minutes and you're in a new ROM.
Eh... i use amon-ra.. but i have had two backups that wouldn't successfully restore (Boot loop). Ended up losing some contacts..
+1 for amon-ra
Cw has given me nothing but problems
I will go out on a limb and say that I use CW, I tried RA, and honestly, I had nothing but problems with it. Looking at a lot of posts, people say that CW never wipes correctly, and I found out on my phone that RA never wiped correctly.
Really it's all a matter of choice though....use what works for you.
I just want to point out that you CAN use ROM Manager to flash even if you have Amon_Ra installed.
I have Ra installed and when a new CM7 Nightly come out, I get a notification, I tap it, and ROM Mananger does the rest.
There are other functions in ROM Manager that don't work unless you have Clockwork installed though, for sure. I just wanted to point that out!
Ra 1.8 has been flawless for me so far. I am moving on to try 2.3, but i don't really know if i want the new complications...
@drmacinyasha, if one goes the 2.3 route, after the initial backup of everything, what is the minimum you would recommend one backs up w/ all the options available?? /data, /system & /boot only? (as you posted)...and why?
Ok. Would I be able to do a nandroid back up and installing it on another EVO. Could that be done with RA or CW???

I believe it is technically possible but highly discouraged. Some of the things you back up are unique to your phone. I wouldn't do it.

[Q] What If I Lose My Wimax RSA Keys

So this is probably a noob question, but I'm having problems finding a direct answer, so here it goes. I am interested in flashing Calkulin's newest combo pack for radio updates amongst other things and I need to know that if by some chance I lose my Wimax RSA keys, can I just restore my current nandroid back with working 4g, and fix everything? When I go into the folder for the back up, there is a file named wimax.HT05CHL02409 so I assume that is the file needed to restore them, but I am unsure.
I want to update everything because I am in the center of Philadelphia and still have poor 3g and 4g, so I am looking for some help with that. I am running CM7.0.3.1 by the way.
you will be able to restore them
you can use the wipe menu and make a backup of ur wimax keys. thats what i did. i also copied the backup to my pc in case my sd gets wasted. after u flash use the wimax key checker app from market to see if they are still present and then restore if there is an issue

Yea, all my nandroid back ups are copied to my laptop as well. So if I make a back up of the wimax using recovery, how would I got about restoring it?
i havent had to do that yet but if i were to do it I would just restore my wimax backup from recovery and then use the key checker to make sure everything is ok

I am using Clockworkmod 2.6.0.1 and I can't find any option to back up wimax, so I suppose this is where you tell me to switch to Amon RA 2.3, right?

Precisely.
Well I decided to switch ROMs and go to MikG 1.01 and ended up flashing everything at the same time with no problems. However, I still have yet to have problems with Clockworkmod, so I guess I will stick with it for now.

Nandroid restore problem

I'm on the Mikg 2.1 + 3.0 rom, and ran into a problem trying to restore my backup after briefly trying out another rom. Using AmonRA, after restoring my backup it loads like normal but when the lockscreen comes up there is no ring or way to unlock the phone. Does anybody know what happened? Is my backup no good? Going to have to reload the stock rom to get back into my phone.
Thanks

Just flash the rom over your setup now, fastest way to fix it for right now. Or boot back into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik
I guess I will switch back to clockwork recovery since I have used it to restore my stock backup before. Don't know what happened to this backup that I made on AmonRA, but if it doesn't work I won't be using it anymore.
I'm having the same problem. I have done multiple nandroid backups with Amon_Ra that are not restoring properly...
I don't flash over anything critical, but it's becoming an inconvienience.
Are you saying that CWM is not doing this?
I hae only used amon ra after rooting with no problems. Might be a bad recovery. Just my 2cents.

Same problem here. I did a full wipe before restoring and wonder if that was the problem. Did you do a full wipe before restoring?

All of you guys are using Amon and having restore issues.. Not something I have really ever heard of. Is it a 32gb card
After I restored I was missing market. Running deck 1.3
Sent From My Pocket
Mine is a 16gb card. I couldn't unlock the phone after restore. There was no unlock ring. Running mik 2.5
I have the same issue. 32gb card. Amon-ra. fortunately clockwork works. Unfortunately I have to use clockwork. I even reformatted and repartitioned. Still no luck
We're comin from a pure power source.
I've also restored from Amon Ra and had weird things missing.
Mistress of Mischief
holy crap im having the same issues. I did a nandroid restore with amon ra 2.3 and now even after a full WIPE I cannot get the same rom that I had restored at one point working again. Market app is missing. WTF?
Not sure what's going on exactly. However, I have noticed that's get weird restores when I wipe the .Android directory and don't back it up. That has all my sdcard programs. That winner explain the missing ring, but maybe the market.
how do I switch from amon ra to clockworkmod? and which is the latest & greatest version?
I wanna give it a try just for the heck

Go to the dev section, search clockworkmod and it'll come out; the latest version is 5.0.2 I believe. You can also download rom manager from the market.
should i be able to just flash it using rom manager? I just wanna give it a try to see if I can sort this issue im having. thx everyone!

missing rsa keys

I ran wimax checker from the market and it tells me my rsa keys are missing. I don't have a backup of my stock rom. So my question is this. Is there any way to restore my RSA keys?? I'm on the newest hboot rooted with s-off. Now I don't remember what recovery I was using but I did wipe something that said wimax at one point. I am currently using amon-ra style. My 4g turns on it just never connects, I am running Alter Rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1550526, which is a stock ROM. But my 4g problems happens with sense or AOSP. I didn't have any 4g problems before I did the wimax format. I have flashed the mewest radio combo which got my 4g to turn off and on again but I still can not connect. Anybody have any ideas??? Thank you.
Do you have any nandroids at all, or did you ever select Wimax backup in them?
I have a nandroid of just Wimax just for this case.
No nandroids at all.......I'm SOL huh??
Sorry, I don't know any other way... Perhaps maybe a cwm backup from originally rooting and flashing amon ra? Could always flash back to cwn and restore that? Otherwise sorry.
I think you're kinda boned on this one bud. search all of your stuff for a backup and see if you can get your WIMAX keys out of it
