[Q] Booting to bootloader with broken volume rocker - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
After two and a half years I decided to root HTC Desire (it's easy for me now, I passed it to my wife ).
However, I realized that the volume rocker is kinda broken . Volume up is working, but volume down has to be pressed in the right position in order to work. Ain't it sad?
I tried adb reboot boatloader, but it didn't work.It just closed itself. Note that this adb command is working on my One X.
Any suggestion as to how to get into bootloader under such circumstances, without visiting service for a volume rocker replacement?

with phone off hold back button + power, that takes u into fastboot then use ur volume up button to navigate to bootloader and press power to select

Thanks, mate, it's working!:good:
I didn't know that...
And, by the way, it's on GB (I ran RUU on it). Does it have any impact to rooting, S-OFFing, ...?

what exactly is it u want to do?
also in bootloader what does it say?
bravo pvt ?
hboot ?
etc etc

I want it rooted, I want to try custom ROMs (only with One X I realized the full advantage of having one).
Also, I would like to use a part of SD card as phone storage. I will read through Desire threads how to perform all the stuff needed.
Currently, I am in process of unlocking the bootloader via htcdev.
Bootloader says:

HBOOT-1.02.0001
MICROP-031d
...
RADIO-5.17.05.23

Cheers!

to s-off u can use revolutionary, very straight forward. click the Desire All Things Root Guide in my sig, theres (i think) all u would need and has a guide to s-off using revolutionary. have a good read first so u get the basics of it.
once ur s-off and rooted u can install 4ext recovery and partition ur sdcard with that, but thats for later lol

How to unlock hboot or S-OFF my branded WFS ?

Hi there !
I would like to S-OFF or unlock bootloader of my Orange FR branded WFS. HTCdevs method does note seem to work, ROM or bootloader is too wreid and not supported by official orange hboot updater from htcdevs. After some tricks (goldcard I guess), I succeed in installing "Europe hboot" from htcdevs, but it doesn't help in any way : fastboot oem command returns an error 1, command error . Hboot might be too old to know these commands.
By searching on XDA, I found a tool called temproot that allows me to root the phone until I reboot it.
my HBoot version is 0.90.0000 and radio 7.53.39.03M.
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL.
HTC drivers, andro SDK, Java, debuging mode,... are probably ok. I use Windows 7x64 and Linux Mint.
I think I said everything. If you want more details or explainations, I'll do my best to answer preciselly, even if I'm a noob .
Thanks !

The unlockable European HBOOT is version 1.08.0099, so I take this to mean that you successfully updated to a generic EU HBOOT (0.90.0000) which is not unlockable, but can be updated to 1.08.0099. Thus,

So you need to go back to htcdev and update your HBOOT to the unlockable one. When you do, HBOOT will show:
*** LOCKED (OOW) ***

Thanks for (very) fast answer and making me realize that I successfuly downgraded my HBoot (that's what I was searching to do).
I believed that it should allow me to upgrade with unlockable HBoot too, but I forgot to say that when I try to update HBOOT the way htcdev tells using their HTC_EU-1.09.0099 / ORANGE_FR-1.09.0099 / Any 1.08.0099 HBoot, I get an error 191, my ROM is NOT up to date. I have no ROM update possible with my f****** provider custom ROM. Is it possible to change this ROM to the official HTC ROM (using my temp rooting and adb shell or I don't know what), so that I can get last updates, flash HBoot with HTC_EU-1.09.0099 and get custom ROM (such as CM7.2) ?
Or I am thinking wrong on the way it works (probably the case : I learned everything alone) ?
Edit : I believe that this would have worked, if the given link weren't dead.......... Uploading website are all closed. That's a shame.
Thank you,
KennyG9
Try this:
1. Run the RUU...exe for updating the HBOOT again but don't try to update. Instead, find the temporary folder it created to extract the files needed for the install. It will look something like C:\Users\[LoginName]\AppData\Local\Temp\{82B23FCD-D5D0-45CA-A3A2-5350D3926551}.
2. In one of the subfolders, find rom_02.zip from and copy it to another location on your hard drive. Rename it PG76IMG.zip. You can close the RUU wizard now.
3. Move PG76IMG.zip to the root folder of your Goldcard.
4. Boot the phone into HBOOT (turn it off, pull the battery for 5 sec. and replace it, hold down volume and press the power button). Once in HBOOT, the phone will find PG76IMG.zip and try to install it. Follow the directions on the screen.
5. Do a factory reset and reboot.

It worked finally . You're so beautiful !
For interested people, you can get rom_01.zip and rom_02.zip. It corresponds to PG7610000_Marvel_hboot_1.09.0099_0209_R.exe file. (Orange FR 2.14.73.1 PG7610000)
Thank you very very much.

software s-off????
After spending 3 days trying to upgrade my hboot so i could unlock my bootloader, i somehow ended up with s-off! here are the steps i followed.
1) try updates from htcdev - didnt work
2) made goldcard, tried updates - didnt work
3) gained temp root using adb and zergrush, worked
4) hex edited the rom version number - didnt work
5) placed rom_2 on sd card - worked, sort of, updated the radio, but not the bootloader, "cannot rollback hboot"
6) placed rom_1 on sd card -worked, updated the radio
7) went into hboot to try to flash rom_2 again, voila! s-off!!!!
dont ask me if this is a way to s-off devices without xtc clip, all i know is it is what has worked for me, so i thought i would share.

the thing is , my phone was s-on , then i downloaded the ruu from htc dev , it said that my phone is not supported despite the fact that it was my exact htc arabic phone with exact software numbers , so i found a way on the forum to extract the rom.zip files from the ruu , so i did , and flashed it using sd card , now it says s-off , but i cant get the unlock code token with the htcdev method , the question is , do i still need it? , or can i root and start flashing roms without it? , as i am now s-off?
any help is appreciated guys =)
S-OFF ? then keep it and do not unlock bootloader. S-OFF is worth much more.
There seem to be some combinations of radios and bootloaders that do S-OFF lol
one combination is hboot 0.90.0000 + htcdev radio.

okay buddy , i cant thank you enough , you are a living legend man , it miraculously worked like a charm , and i am now rooted and in the process of finding a new rom , any suggestions? , i am so excited , i waited for nearly 5 months to do that , hell this is long
go to development forum and find the one that suits you, but my choice is CM7 for speed and it is stable enough now make nandroid backup before flashing any rom, you may want to get back to stock later

my current specification is

i feel if i jus get the radio update i might get an s-off.. i read a similar post somewhere else.. could u please temme the source for ur specification?
In my case yes i did get total s-off from just flashing the radio , to get the ruu , go to htc dev website , do the procedure then choose your version , in my case it was htc arabic , it will provide u with an executable program , open it , and dont use it to do anything , go to your temp folder , and find a folder that says rom1 and another that says rom2 , flash both using your bootloader , if everything is done right you should get s-off

i did all that.. i even tried updating just the radio and then the hboot manually.. but it says main version is older, update fail!

Half-bricked Desire

Hello everyone.
Recently I noticed a few problems with my Desire so I decided to send it for a warranty repair, so I had to come back to stock ROM. I was on:
Oxygen ZM
hboot 6.93.1002
microp 051d
dation 4.05.00.11
I just plugged my phone in fastboot mode and opened RUU on my PC. It went through and rebooted the phone. Unfortunately, it is now stuck on splash screen with HTC logo.
I don't know what to do now. Maybe the hboot version was too high?
I was thinking about installing new ROM but can't open recovery (when I'm in fastboot and click recovery it reboots on splash screen) and also the cable doesn't work at all. Can't use adb commands or charge the battery - it just acts like it isn't plugged in.
Please help. I'm a total newbie and don't want to brick my phone (I've read that if I can reach hboot it's not as bad)
Turn off the phone n hold volume down + power and post everything it says in bootloader menu.

Ur still s-off so try flashing new recovery via fasboot commands. Read bortaks guide in my sig, everything u need for fastboot is there, also download the 4ext recovery PB99IMG in my sig and extract it and ul have almost the latest 4ext recovery.img, thats what ul need to flash in fastboot.
Once uv fastboot setup on ur computer, put recovery.img in ur c:\ drive on ur computer then with ur phone off, hold back button + power (thats fastboot) then plug in ur phone (usb) and open command window and type -
fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img
If all okay then u should have recovery.
Read bortaks guide and the guide for ADB & FASTBOOT by SUroot. Everything u need is there

hey. thanks for your help. but as I said, I can't plug in my phone with USB - when I do it, nothing happens. I can't even charge my battery.
So, I've put this zip on my SD card and the bootloader asked me to update recovery. I clicked yes and it said done. But when I try to open the recovery, it still goes into splash screen
also, I can't try a lot of combinations because my battery could discharge and that would be a problem...
Does ur phone charge when its turned off and plugged into mains (wall)? If so charge it up first
The only other way to flash recovery is by fasboot commands.
There is a way to flash an ruu via PB99IMG but id make sure ur battery is full first

OK, so I will try to charge my battery with some other device (same phone or special charger) and try to do it. How much time does it take? I have about 15% battery left because I was running RUU on 30% (yup, that was stupid) do you think it's not enough? If it takes less than 5 mins, it should be OK.
edit: but... I've already run RUU and that's why my phone is bricked. What RUU should I run to make sure it will work? I don't know why this one didn't work. Was it because of hboot version or what?
U can use the 2.3 gb upgrade from htcdev. Heres a link to my dev host, file is there
http://d-h.st/d44
Then use Droidzones great guide
http://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&sourc...fC74BQ&usg=AFQjCNGX60VvJTy6BOBkfKsZ9maoS-A_xw
Make sure ur battery is atleast 40-50% to be safe, bootloader wont let u run it anyway if its below 30%. It should only take 5 mins but the phone will need power to boot up fully aswell.

thanks, you're just great!
I thought it won't work because my hboot is too high or something but it really helped!
one more thing, just not to make another thread. do you know why when I try to reach my recovery it shows red "!" over a phone? is there a recovery in stock soft? I want my phone to look like it was brand new. how to get rid of "revolutionary" in hboot?
ehh.. now my PC doesn't see the phone (can't use adb commands, but it's charging) - GOD, WHY?

No I don't have a custom recovery.
I found a very simular treat as mine - http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-incredible-2/686352-incredible-2-unusual-boot-problem.html and I'm following it.
Now I have the problem with unlocking the bootloader with HTCdev.com when i paste "fastboot oem get_identifier_token"in the comand promt i get an error:

I will try to fix it later today. If you know any easy trick to fix this error, please let me know.
Try rooting the phone with one of the sticky guides here on xda (prototype's is pretty all encompassing). I agree with chillybean, you probably need a boot.img. Rooting will help you install one.
