What app do you guys use to back up your contacts? ( I know Google can store them, but I like to have my own backup)
I'm looking for an app that will backup their number and their current contact picture.
I've been using mobile backup 2, but when I go from a ice rom to a jb rom I lose their pictures.

Why do you need an app just export them from your phone and save the file thats it. Then import when you want them back?.... Not for nothing but with the simplicity of Google backing them up I don't think you are going to find people who need to back them up since its kinda useless... Like I said you can simply export/import them manually from your phone

When I export from ics I can never seem to import to jb. That is why I was asking about an app. Call me old fashion I guess lol

The file is the same isn't it also you can import it into regular google. I guess you are and like to make things more difficult for your self than necessary I see as well. My Backup Root will handle it if you feel like you must do it
Contacts are automatically synced with your Gmail account.. There is no easier way to backup your contacts than that!.. As soon as you sign in on your phone your contacts will be there too

1st of all, I'm on the ACS ICS
After the last time I had an issue, and had to do a nandroid restore, I realized none of my contacts are being sent/stored with he cloud. I lost all contacts I had entered into my phone since the last backup. What am I missing here?

You have to choose store contacts on Google each time you add one not phone. When you choose phone and wipe it, you wipe you contacts. Choose export contacts to Google (your gmail) now to have them there next time.

yeah...that its NOT even an option. It simply saves to phone, ONLY. There is no "settings" under the contacts "menu" to change it either

If you have a valid gmail account and are logged in (can you dl from the Market?) When you save a contact it should ask save on phone or save on google.

In contacts, hit the menu key and export, just export them to sd card for now.

Is there any chance that it once prompted you to choose Google or Phone, and you selected Phone AND checked 'default'??
I selected Google and checked 'default' and it no longer prompts me- it just saves to to Google without asking.

As far as "default" perhaps, but you should be able to switch back at any point, no?

BTW, for now?
Util WHEN? lol
I want this fixed, and it to work the way it was designed. Even the iPhone apologists agree this is one of the greatest advantages of the Android phone design, and now it doesn't work for me

Until you figure out how to clear your defaults and how to export them to your gmail. Go into settings>applications>manage applications>all and see if contacts, logsprovider, phone or dialeractivitytab have the option at the bottom to clear defaults. If you have not set any it will be greyed out.

No defaults in ANYTHING. I checked anything pertaining to contacts, phone/storage, and dialer.
I have lost sooooo many numbers because of this

Stop shouting man. Well then do as I suggested and export contacts to the sd card before you flash a new ROM. I would Odin back to stock EC05, create a contact and see if it asks where you want to store it. If the Google option is there then root, flash your ROM and redownload your apps or restore apps with Titanium but do not restore any system data.

The stock ROM has T-Mobile Backup pre-installed, check your account and sync settings to make sure it's enabled.
I dont wanna try it but if i format system from CWM do i lose contacts/joined ?
You will lose your contacts (and all other data) if you format system. If they are backed up by google though, all you have to do is sync contacts when you sign in on your google account and they will come back.
Is a pain if u also have them saved to sim. Cuz it will double up contacts. Its tedious to do but worth every bit of the time invested in order to get a clean flash. It just how I do it. Just my opinion
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
I save all my contacts to my Google account. None of them are on my phone or sim card so there's no chance of losing my contacts. I can even see/edit them on google.com/contacts

Reason I do it both ways is in the event I was hacked on my goggle. It happens just like any site. Everything is vulnerable to attacks so I rather not take no chances. Just being safe I guess.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
If you have the same contacts on both sim and google, you can "display" only one or the other in the contacts app so it doesn't show double.

I'm having an issue where once contacts are joint, I lose the google name and it defaults to their facebook name.
This is really annoying for people who don't use their real names on facebook...
Is there something I'm missing where I can default it to the google contact name?
So, I was rooting my brother's girlfriend's phone. I flashed CWM, backed up the 2.3.6 FC09 data including her contacts. I then flashed Paranoid JD Rom and forgot to make a contact backup. Is there any way to get those contacts back? Can I use odin to revert to stock, then flash CWM, restore the backup, then acquire the contacts that way? Will that work?
Thanks for the response, guys. <3
Yes. Why were they not saved to Google? Then whenever you log in on a new ROM or new phone all the contacts come back. When you have them back you can export them to your sd card then import them on the new ROM.

I flashed GApps but with my phone (TMobile G2x), I never have to sync contacts through GMail manually; after connecting my Google account, my contacts sync automatically. I figured this was the same. I will try that and let you know. Thanks for the speedy response!

Is there any way to get the stock messaging app to automatically change the file name when saving an mms? It promts me every time telling me to rename it or else it will overwrite the last one... Not the end of the world, but incredibly irritating.

No idea, but if you just want a convenient backup of your texts, this one seems them to your gmail. They'll be threaded weird and out of order, but easily searchable.
Oops, I can't post links yet. It's called SMS Backup+, available on the play market.

I have the same problem, you can continue naming each individual picture with numbers you just randomly think of, its rare I repeated the same number. Or download a third party app like Handscent or Go SMS which just downloads the MMS without worrying about a particular designation. Every once in awhile you run across a Touchwiz rom that doesn't have this problem, but its usually a ASOP rom that just downloads MMS without this problem.

That's about what I figured. I used to use handcent but the stock app has made leaps and bounds over the years so I like sticking with that. I've been doing the random letters after going to save it, but in you ef up and do by chance pick something you already used, it will overwrite it.

Any update or solution to this issue? From what I remember my Samsung Epic 4G did not have this problem, as a matter of fact it did exactly what we are trying to get the Galaxy S3 to do by default. I find that this should have not been an issue, why on earth would someone NOT think to make this a basic function/feature?....
