I'm trying to install an adblocking hosts file, but I can't mount system as read/write. I tried in CWM and terminal with SU permissions. Any way to fix this or it just doesn't work (new to CM10 )
Thanks

Have you tried Rom toolbox and root explorer?

Yep, I've used ROM Toolbox and a root file manager, but all of them fail to mount

After odin put the su zip in the root of your sd reboot recovery then flash the zip reboot and su should be in your apps fully working

Are you using SuperSU? I was having issues with that not granting root permissions correctly, so my root apps wouldn't do anything that requires root.. i.e mount r/w

I found out if you restore with cwm 5026 or 5027 this will happen...you have to use one of the touch recoveries...

I am trying to edit some stuff in the system, but root explorer won't mount, if i press the mount r/w nothing happens. I have also tried es explorer with the "mount file system" checked and i just get a "sorry, operation failed". I am rooted and have given them both su permission. I tried having su forget the apps and regive them permission, didn't help. Rebooted, fixed permissions and still a no go. Any one have any ideas? I am running stock rom and kernel.

Restored a nand backup of stock rom with 5026. Is that the problem?

Other people have been having this problem with nand restores too. The only solution I've seen is a wipe and fresh install.

How can I get full root, not temp root so I can uninstall and delete bloatware. I rooted it via odin but it will not uninstall because of temp root.

You installed a custom recovery through odin. Did you install super user? And if you did you need something like titanium back up or rom toolbox pro to uninstall pre-installed apps
sent from my T989 full of CM awesomeness and a touch of Venom from the Darkside!!
Yes I did all that, super user does have access but every time I try with titanium it shows removed but when I reboot they show up again. I can't even rewrite in system with root explore

What method exactly did you use to gain root?
Cwm via odin and flashed zip fou superuser. Superuser is on there but I don't have full root

Did you install busy box? Titanium usually needs busy box to run the script to do a system app uninstall...if i remember correctly

root explorer or es file explorer and go into system/app/ and remove what you want gone my friend. It works everytime...
Thanks but I figured it out. My phone was acting super cracked out so I reflashed via Odin and used a different cwm tar and root zip file. Works good now, must have been a bad zip.

Did you remember to mount /system as R/W at the top of Root Explorer?
Hi, I am running aokp milestone 1 on my T989, but I am having trouble mounting the system as writable. I have tried changing permissions using root browser and ES file explorer but I get an error "changing permissions was not successful. Please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes"
The strange thing is that it worked before.
I also tried using mobile terminal but it says read-only file system.
Does anyone know why I can't make system files writable or how to fix this?
there are more than one way to mount system to r/w ...easiest is install an app called mount/system rw/ro
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using XDA Premium HD app
I tried that app and a few similar ones. It says it's mounted r/w and in ES file explorer if I long press the system folder it says rwx rwx rwx, however all of the files and folders within /system are still rw- r-- r-- and can't be modified.

what type of custom recovery u have?

while on recovery there is an option to mount system in r/w mode

Thanks. Yes, I've done it before in recovery mode, but is there a way to do it without having to go into recovery? I'm just confused because this has never happened to me with aosp-based roms, only with TW-based roms. Could it be that there is something leftover from a TW rom that I need to wipe? I first noticed the problem when I tried out a TW rom and then went back to aokp by wiping data, cache, and dalvik cache and restoring from nandroid backup. I might try reflashing aokp.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
some roms misbehave....u might have to reflash that rom after clearing cache...etc
Or...clean install will def fix it

Thanks for your help. Just an update for anyone else who may have the same problem, I wiped cache and dalvik cache (did not wipe data), reflashed aokp, gapps and radio, and now everything is back to normal.
