Phone gets real warm - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I'm not one of those that gets 26 hours on a battery. I use the phone a lot! It always gets quite warm. Hasn't really caused any problem that I know of, but anyone know of why?

I think im the only one who doesnt have the overheat issue
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium

I read somewhere that one or both of the cores aren't managed efficiently and switch govenors from ondemand to performance which the phone isn't optimized for causing the heat issue. I actually put my phone on performance and it did get hot so I think this may be true, I heard that there was a script or something that fixes it called restore dual core or something like that but I think it was for the international S3 so I don't know if it will work with our devices.

My stock rom also used to make the phone heat up but it's always at the very bottom. Anyone know why that it?

My phone use to be very warm and then I changed to FrostyICS Rom and now it only a little and none most of the time

It's gotta be the name "Frosty"
I'm on stock and it heats up at the bottom only if I've been surfing the net on wifi for a long period of time or when it's charging...and I'm surfing the net

I figured that the phone heats up due to processor usage.
My guess would be that the processor is located behind the home button, therefore when you're running an intensive task (or doing somethings in general) the processor has to increase the clock speed thus heating the device.
It's really annoying actually, makes my hands sweaty sometimes when holding the phone.

I had this phone heating up on me while I was on stock too, but ever since I switched to AOKP with Lean Kernel the heating has been dramatically reduced for me. And by dramatically reduced I mean it rarely heats up unless I'm doing something up that takes a lot of processing power like a 3D game.

How hot does your S3 get?

When I'm on mobile data with GPS running, I noticed the bottom of half of my S3 getting pretty damn warm. Is this normal?
Just started using mine I'm feeling the same heat

Are you guys all running stock kernel and ROM or custom? I'm on stock.
Ha! Try hours with GPS, Bluetooth music and Tethering on... the heat seems to really hit while I'm charging and doing all that. Fact! I can't touch the ass end of the phone. It probably gets about 8 hours a week like that. Still working perfectly. Samsung tells me it's normal. It also has a lot of factors for me too. I use a 1 amp charger. After 96% it's not so bad. At night when brightness is down. Not as hot. I tried to get it to mess up but couldn't. GPS, Bluetooth, tethering, charging from 30% and 100% display, and I pushed out to a low coverage area. Didn't miss a beat or melt. Lol.

Navigation makes phones really hot, but with normal usage it should stay within 30-36°C.
I like this phone's heat management more than my old phone. My Evo 3d would get hot from 10 min usage.
On this, my screen has been on for 2 hours straight and I'm running at a cool 35.1 °C.

When I was running CM10 for a day or two I thought my phone would melt but it was also 90+ degrees outside so it was hard to tell. My phone gets a little warm, but nothing too worrying.

It actually shouldn't be expected. The Snapdragon S3's also ran at 1.5ghz and was pleasantly cool and the Exynos on the Galaxy Note was at 1.4ghz. Both are less power efficient and should run hotter than the S4. I've used the Evo LTE for a while with the same S4 and it barely got warm on a hot day. The issue is with the second core being weird. For those that hasn't already, make sure you flash Freeza's fix, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790061 . This fix made my phone cool and got rid of my quickly draining battery life.
Most of the time my phone will stay within "normal" (to me) range, but when I game heavily... it turns into an oven range! I've gotten so paranoid a few times, I took the battery out and let it cooled for 5-10min
Im having the same problem....it isnt the software thats causing this its the hardware

I hope you guys will repsond to this... What do you consider to be "normal" temperature for your phone to reach? Is 35 degrees realy normal? Ive heard people with s3 talk of theirs only reaching temperatures of 29 degrees max.
Thanks.

Average battery temperature

OK so I know pie devices get relatively hot, but when just having my screen on and typing on here or using root explorer it goes up to some 90 degrees. And it just concerns me because my galaxy s2 hardly guys 90 even while playing intensive games.
I'm just curious if 90 is normal or if I should get a new device through warranty.
Thanks everyone.

When I was using SetCPU, I saw mine hovered between 80-90 most of the time. If it is bothering your hand, put a case on it. I use an Otterbox Defender and I can feel the heat through the case sometimes.

In my experience this generally hapoens either after a new rom flash or just at random (seemingly). But it has always eventually calmed down and stays cool after that.
I suspect it is searching for mor something....like updating libraries of songs and whatnot. Seems like it occasionally gets stuck and when you add additional load it easilyy heats up. Try using Show CPU Use in dev options and keep an eye on the top few processes while it heats up. May give you an idea as to the real cause.

Well sorry but it definitely makes my system faster no matter what these other people say. I find for instance that Tapatalk can get hung up quite easily but when I run this mod forums load instantly every time.
So, try it out and see for yourself.
Or instead of using the app (since it murders the battery life) you could just change the min frequency of your CPU to like, 600mhz or higher and it does the same thing as this app

No it doesnt do the same thing. I have my cpu set at 1800 performance and this mod clearly makes a difference above and beyond that.
And it may burn battery a bit faster but it doesn't "murder" your battery. I've been heavily using my phone with the mod on for 6 hours and have used about 40% of the battery. Pretty normal burn rate for browsing, texting and watching netflix non stop.

Is it possible to bypass the auto shutdown due to temp?

It's there any way to disable this? I am on stock ZVB rooted with I.A. installed. My phone will shutdown due to temp constantly, especially now that the weather is getting nice out. This is getting to the point of being a deal breaker with this phone. Will a custom ROM help? I love this phone but this is getting to be unacceptable...
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Never heard of such a thing. Try a kernel mod app like Fauxclock or Tricksters mod. Might make all the difference. I swear by Faux's myselff, and have great performance, battery life and no added heat.
There is but it's not recommended. The phone shuts off in order to try and make sure the heat does not damage the hardware permanently. If you're phone is shutting down that often due to heat then it sounds like you need to get it replaced. I've never had it shut down due to over heating, even after hours of playing a graphic intense game with the screen at max brightness and charging..
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
Thanks for the info. Glad to hear that you can play games/charge/etc.. cuz I couldn't even play Ingress and have BT enabled for more than a few min if it was above room temp outside.
I was wondering if it was just my phone, which it appears that it is. I will take it in as I have the BB ins. I hope it's an isolated issue cuz I do really like this phone.

Got my LGOG replaced at BB and it is definitely better! Its kinda sad that I feel like this is an upgraded phone but it seems faster, smoother and overall better. AND no more shutdowns! Tho I'm paranoid that it will, it finally runs CF bench no prob.

How hot is too hot.

Guys how hot is too hot for CPU on this phone? Sometimes my screen gets hot that making a call is uncomfortable. Temp monitor is show 50 right now but it can go as high as 65 just surfing the web and today it was in the 70s while I was skyping. No oc, running unofficial cm12.

Instead of making irrelevant speculations as to how you use your device and completely disregarding your actual question, I'll at least attempt to be somewhat helpful...
I'm not 100% certain on the safe operating temperatures, but I can say personally the highest my device can normally go without suffering loss of performance would be right in the neighborhood of 50. I can play fairly simple games like Plague Inc, Hill Climb Racing, and one or two others and my device doesn't get that hot unless I'm charging while I play. I'm also oc'd to 1988mhz. Once I begin noticing a drop in performance I let it cool before continuing usage. ~50C I would say should be fairly safe, albeit I wouldn't want to keep a constant temperature that high; but 60-70 is really starting to push it.
Do you happen to notice the device getting that hot on other ROMs? If pre-CM12 ROMs don't get as hot or you're not certain, try going back until some of the kinks get worked out.

Why does the fact that he's got a different battery than stock mean that he's going to overheat? Are aftermarket batteries supposed to operate at a higher temperature? None I ever used did except possibly when charging, and even then it was only marginally warmer.
The ROM I could see simply because CM12 hadn't had the gremlins worked out yet... but the battery? Only speculating about the cause with no information to back it up, troubleshooting tips, or possible remedies doesn't help anything aside from your post count.
A buggy CM12 will do it. But the battery will aggregate the issue with all that extra power to cook things up.
