Flash to new stock rooted rom - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello,
I recently rooted my buddy's sg3 for him and now it keeps reminding him about the new OTA update. Is there a way to just download and install the update I've tried reading through the countless forums and I'm more confused now then what I was when i started. Apprently you can't flash a stock recovery unless you unroot and put back on a stock recovery instead of clock work then you can install the update. Is that true. All I really need to do is just install the latest update without losing any data and keeping root is that possible if so how.
Thank You

Thank you for the info. I looked over everything and apprently if I did the software update and wiped calvik then i won't lose anything. But if I did the all in one update it updates everything but I'm not sure if i will lose everything. Have you done this update and were you able to keep all the data intact. thank you

That I do not know...I haven't used stock firmware since the day after I got my phone back in Aug... I'm using the most current freegs3 which was upgraded to the new firmware.

Ok well thank you anyways.

What are you wanting to get from updating? The answer to that will determine the action(s) you need to take.

[Q] root on T989UVLDE firmware

I have a question about the new firmware that was released, the T989UVLDE baseband. It appears to be the prerequisite update to the actual ICS update, whenever that is going to be...
Anyways, as a result of this update root access is lost and all of the tmobile bloatware is back. Has anyone tried to re-root again using odin on this new firmware?
Really? Use the same method you used to root the first time

I was on this new update but didnt see a point in it as of right now since ill wait the official ota ics to drop and become a flashable zip.
I was able to re-root it again using Odin. It wasn't that I didn't know how to do it, I just wanted to see if anyone else has done it just to know if it works out okay. And it turns out everything is okay. I'm paranoid...
Anyways thanks for your responses.

if you really want to update just download either the ODIN tar thats in this forum or go to rootz and download the flashable zip that whitheawkx made.
Or you can download Samsung Kies (not kies air, actual kies) as you will need it on the 11th for the ICS update.
Edit: nvm somehow missed you saying rooted

Justananomaly,
If I download Samsung Kies....then what do I do...will it automatically update?? and then I will be ready for ICS....or should I just go back to Stock.....

Nvm about Kies since you are rooted. Maintenance update will unroot you anyways youll have to use Odin to flash it then unroot unless you want to flash it and stay unrooted and stock until the 11th for ICS and yes kies will ask you to update on the 11th after plugging your phone in.

Justananomaly,
Ok,,,,I guess I should go back to unrooted and stock till the 11th.
If I go back to unrooted and stock, will I loose all my data......and is there a FAQ or step my step to go back to stock
or when I get this update will this unroot me and just wait till the the 11th.
I would like to back to stock but keep all my data....how do I do this...I see outdated FAQ's, etc....anyinformation will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if you will lose your data or not, most likely on the 11th you will anyways since it's an OS update. The maintenance update didn't wipe my data but did unroot me. But thats because I was on stock just rooted.

OK...well ihave all my data backed up....so I could just sit back and relax and let T-MO do all the updates and when done then I can unroot again.....and add what Mod I want....does this sound correct?

yes kies resets your phone to stock as in out-of the-box if u choose to go back to stock i did it to my SGSII in order to get the UVLDE and lose everything... good thing i made a backup on my PC but remember that when u flash a new rom even a stock it wipes your data thats why is always recommended to make a nandroid backup. now im just sitting here... waiting for my ICS... no root till then...
edit: that is if you really dont want to use odin wich is recommended. check here for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103 . good luck

Nandroid is built into clockworkmod recovery. It backs up your entire partition so it's basically like having a full backup image of everything, apps, ROM, data, everything the way it is. If you just want apps backed up, and not your entire phone, sick with titanium.

I was replying to the OP whom said he was on stock rooted. I was also running stock rooted with bloat frozen. I just unfreezed, delete dalvic/cache and rebooted. Then flashed via kies, rerooted, then refroze the bloat. It's probably different/cause problems if you are running a custom ROM prior to upgrading via kies. Hope this info helps...

[Q] Help regarding official ICS update for T989

Ok so I'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.6. My phone is rooted. I AM NOT USING ANY SORT OF ROM. I am on the stock T-mobile rom.
The only programs I have installed on it are Titanium backup. I have performed a backup using nandroid as well as TB.
My question to you all is: Is it safe to update to the OFFICIAL ICS when T-Mo rolls out with it on June 11th?
If so, do I have to unroot? Or can I just run the update when I hook up my phone and open KIES?
Help!
If you're running the stock ROM, you should be able to update without issue. You will almost certainly lose root, though. I'm hoping it only takes a day or so for someone to bang out a rooted, deodexed, etc. stock ICS ROM once the update is released.

It is okay to be rooted, but what Mr Knitty is asking is are you on the UVLDE build of gingerbread or the KL1? You need to be on the newer, updated UVLDE.

I tried connecting my phone to Kies after rooting and it says that a firmware update isn't supported on my device. In order for me to do anything in that regard, I'd have to unroot and then upgrade. If I were you, I'd just wait until Tmo pushes out the ICS update and when someone puts the rooted version out just install it. It will save you the trouble of having to unroot and root again just to get what your phone is already capable of getting via root.
Is there a thread for upgrading from a modded rom, like Juggernaut? Searched, but then again my eyes aren't the greatest. If I need the UVLDE update, how would I go about not bricking during such process? Sorry to intrude, just thought this was the closest thread to ask.

Theres a thread dedicated specifically to flashing the update. That thread covers every possible scenario. Look for the words flash, UVLDE, how to, and update in the titile. Its plain as day.
I think I got answer on my question in here.....
I didn't have to change back to stock recovery to update or unroot.
If on stock just flash the root file again through Odin and your good to go.
If your on a custom GB ROM. Just flash through Odin instead of Kies. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682955
Tmobile T989UVLDE
If coming from a leaked custom ICS ROM. I would use the super wipe and cache wipe. Then flash through Odin.
Of course back up everything with your preferred method.

*EDIT*-Nevermind, found what I was looking for. Just going to go back to stock, and wait it out.

dont worry
My phone its rooted just stock just to be able to use good apps like titanium addfree etc etc and when i update laat week did not gave me a problem so im thinking if u have stock rom just rooted i dont see a problem plus everyone here at xda wont let u down...trust me
What I would do, is just wait like 2 or 3 more days so someone can come out with a completely stock ICS. That way you don't have to worry about losing root

Flash to stock ROM - OTA?

Hi Guys!
I have plan to buy Galaxy S3 in Tmo (in retail) and have a two questions. Is it safe to flash new phone from Tmo to stock android? I don't want to have any Tmo stuff and Tmo's andro version... Question two is, when I'll have stock android on Galaxy, Do I get an OTA when it'll appear? Or I will have to flash manually when new rom will appear?
Thanks for clarification!
dzordzyk
Now someone correct me if im wrong as i still call myself a noob but i do have basic knowledge but you can always root your phone/odin a custom recovery and then flash a stock rom with all the bloat removed. You could always just remove bloat via titanium back up as well tobyour liking. Check out the development thread. Theres alot to read but theres very usefull info to get caught up on. Hope this helps. Oh and in regards to ota, im stock with root injection and im waiting for todays update to try the root keeper method.

For android builds, or AOSP, there are options. You won't get a pure stock AOSP unless you compile and build it yourself. Though Cyanogenmod and AOKP are modified builds of AOSP that have various mods and tweaks I have been using Cyanogenmod 9 and will switch to 10 once it releases.
You will not receive OTA updates as these are custom roms and updates need to be manually flashed
There is a lot of lingo to learn and lots of mistakes to learn from. You will become addicted to flashing updates and various roms very quickly

Every flash in Samsung which I'd like to do has to be done via Odin? Sorry for 'noob' questions but before SGS3 I had NexusOne - everything was simpler on it
Flashing doesn't void my warranty, right? AFAIK on Samsung we have something called "Flash counter" and if we'd like to use warranty, Flash counter should be "0", that's right?
After buy, Do I have unlock phone or something like that?
Thanks for patience! I appreciate it
dzordzyk
No, you would want to odin a stock injected rom or odin a recovery, boot into recovery and then flash the super user zip. I dont know anything about odins counter but the triangle away seems to be working well on our phones unless someone else knows otherwise.
Confirming that if your on the stock root injected rom, use rootkeeper, do a temp unroot and youll be able to get the ota installed. Mine just rebooted from installation. Working good and glad it was so easy. Abq nm here. Hope i helped.

If you are running stock do you get OTA updates? Of course.
You will get ota updates if running stock ONLY! You can be rooted, but you must not have a custom bootloader. Otherwise it will not work.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?
