What's new in 4.1.2? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Can you guys post the new feature you found in 4.1.2? Currently I flashed the takju 4.1.2 factory image, and I think it's almost the same as 4.1.1
Features/Bugfixs found from replies
1. One finger swipe to expand rich notifications. (boyzzykid)
2. Moving the Location settings out of the old settings to it's own settings page. (boyzzykid)
3. 4.1.2 build does not contain either the /system/recovery-from-boot.p or /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, so it will not automatically install the stock recovery upon reboot. (Palaryel)
4. There is a new language selection screen (when you enter your phone for the first time - fresh install). (Joplisan)

One finger swipe to expand rich notifications and moving the Location settings out of the old settings to it's own settings page. That's pretty much it for GN users other than translation fixes and minor changes.

I've had to install 4.1.2 from the stock images from google sinceI ****ed up some things in my 4.1.1. rom that i couldnt fix that easily...anyway, ive noticed that the 4.1.2 build does not contain either the /system/recovery-from-boot.p or /system/etc/install-recovery.sh, so it will not automatically install the stock recovery upon reboot

*please ignore*

well it's good to get an update for the Galaxy Nexus but I'm a bit sad that I don't see any major feature changes...
- No new version of GMail with swipe actions and pinch to zoom (guess it will come later as an update in Play)
- Still can't connect to my 5Ghz Wifi (but it used to work in the past)
- Google Voice Search still crashes presenting results (but it used to work in the past as well)..

You realize that's a leaked version of GMail coming with a new version of Android, right? I don't see how you can be disappointed that a 4.1.x update doesn't include a new GMail that no one was supposed to see in the first place...

It is possible to add Facebook account for sync now, But I don't see any contacts from Facebook in the phone.

yeah I've read people reporting the crash and how you had to deactivate some of the search "domains" of the Google Voice Search for it to work however it didn't work for me. I guess I could do a factory reset with 4.1.2 and see if all these problems go away

No issues on 4.1.2 connecting to my 5 GHz wireless, just throwing that out there.

I noticed that there is a new language selection screen (when you enter your phone for the first time - fresh install). So, that's a small change for 4.1.2 as well, I guess.

People have been saying this after every update for the last year. It's not new And contact sync is not coming because of the spat with Google and Facebook.

And if it does come it will come with a Facebook update. Android supports syncing fine already, it's Facebook that doesn't support it.

The webbrowser has improved alot when viewing flash content. It loads up almost instantly. Web pages also load faster now. My nexus beats the S3 and the iPhone 5 on web browsing (my own test on 100MB fiber optics internet).
I am at 1.5Ghz (The frequency our chip was disgned to run at) and it is beating the S3 and the iPhone 5 (s3 was on Android 4.0.4, 4.1.1 update is not out yet for the S3 in Holland....)

[INFO] Flash support for Android 4.0 ICS will be out before end of 2011

** EDIT for new info **:
Flash for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will be out before the end of 2011. There will be no Flash support for Android 5.0:
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/43152/flash-for-android-4-end-2011-no-flash-for-android-5
The main reason why I switched to Android was it's Flash support. Finding out recently that ICS did not support Flash and that Adobe was discontinuing Flash development was very discouraging.
Google has confirmed that Flash is not yet operational in ICS, but Google is also confirming that Adobe will support Flash in ICS.

Although discouraging and disappointing at first, there is now hope.
So Flash Player doesn't even show up in the Android Market on the Galaxy Nexus but I thought that one can install the apk on the phone. It seems that this doesn't work either, according to other users who've already got theirs. e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351167
Half the bloody web uses Flash. How are we supposed to view those sites?
To be honest I'm glad there is no support at the moment and wish that it wouldn't come. I haven't missed it since upgrading to the Nexus and if anything browsing is faster!
has anyone tried side loading it
Flash is going to die in mobile platforms, and we should be pressing video stream websites to use html5, instead of crying about flash's death. Damn memory/cpu hog.

i dont know about you guys, but for me, more then half the web uses flash. The only reason im not getting iphone because of flash. The stream i always go to, uses flash. gonna wait a month, if they dont support flash on nexus, im getting sgs2
SGS2 will eventually get ICS and will have similar "problem"

i her simple apps like tweecaster and facebook do not work! is this true? wtf is going on?. not having flash is a bummer. at least we should have the option. volume issues, no flash, simple apps not working.. this is getting really discouraging
Because they aren't updated for ics I would say. And because the Nexus is the only ics device at the moment they are probably to lazy to do so.

you keep running the Apple party line. the rest of us would prefer to have the option for when we need it.
Adobe Flash is currently #24 in the top (free) apps for Android. and the majority of the low reviews are from idiots using 50 dollar Cricket android phones.
don't like it? don't use it. no reason to come in here and spout nonsense.
Hopefully this will shut up the people who keep going on about no Flash support on the GN. It's a brand new hardware running a brand new software; of course there are going to be compatibility issues for early adopters.

Several people have reported trying to sideload the latest flash apk for Honeycomb - it didn't work.
About the apps issue, how long is it before they usually get sorted out and ready for the latest OS (right now ICS). I know that the main reason I use my phone for is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Browsing.
I'm not guessing too long right?

If those 4 things are your main concerns it shouldn't be a problem. As far as I know Twitter works fine. Official Facebook app has always been pretty ass on the Android so if you can live with it before you can probably live with it now. YouTube is natively supported and apart from not having Flash the browser is blazing fast.

Enabling NFC on CM10 for S3? Maybe I'm just blind?

So I searched for the answer, but everyone seems to say that GW is working on CM10...I did get it installed with the workaround, but what I'm finding is that in my Settings app in CM10, that there is no NFC option. Am I just blind and missing it in a different menu, or why does it not show up? I'm using the newest 7/29 stable build.

So I'm curious...on CM10, where should the settings be? Am I missing something, or should I reflash? Also...my soft buttons are gone?! Just the lights...they still work...
WOW!
I thought I was loosing my mind. I'm glad I'm not the only one having this issue. I scoured these forums so much today my phone ran out of juice around noon. I wonder why some S3 747 users are having issues and others aren't. I have the AT&T variant and am using the 07/29 preview release just like the other posts. I have already done all the wallet fixes, but can't seem to find how to turn the nfc on either. Can you tell us the work around you used to get yours to work?
I'm having the same problem, NFC options do not appear in settings and Google Wallet states that NFC is disabled. This is on an ATT SIII, running CM10.
Exactly...no idea on my end. I'm also finding that Android File Transfer doesn't work, so I can't use my new SD card...I also cant back up, since my current one is full...feeling like Im stuck for now.

You're running the preview build, right? Did you have to do anything to get NFC running or was it enabled by default?
So... By any chance, did you miss a step in the wallet workaround install? I had the exact same problem. Ended up having to wipe and reinstall my rom. Then follow the wallet workaround instructions exactly. Also, if you ever installed wallet from the market, go in and make sure auto update is unchecked. If you look at the original wallet thread in the development forum you'll see this happened to a couple of folks. Not sure of the cause, but I know that I had to reflash and also disable that auto update. I'd recommend a nandroid right after you reflash a clean rom and verify that nfc settings are there (under wireless - more).
HTH
Good luck!

Thanks for that, but that was the first place I checked...since that's where it always is. The whole problem from the beginning was that it wasn't where it should be.
Anyway....
Good news. I found a workaround if it's missing. If you install CM9, make sure its there, then do a no-wipe install of CM10...there it is. Not sure why that works, or why it's missing in at least a few people's downloads of CM10, but that's my workaround. Going to try the newest version wallet workaround now and make sure it works.
I'm running into a really strange problem... while running a clean install of CM10, NFC is available in the menu. However, after installing Google Wallet via this method:
blog.tekkidd.com/2012/07/howto-install-google-wallet-on-att-samsung-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747
the settings option for NFC disappears.
I can run NFC by going through root access and installing nfc.apk from the app folder, however, this makes the phone EXTREMELY unstable, and it will begin to freeze up every few minutes. For the time being, it looks like the best option would be to wait for Wallet compatibility to be improved in the coming updates.
That is really weird. What I did was flash CM9, then CM10. (now I'm on paranoid android...but anyway). NFC was there, then I used the method listed in the Q&A section to load the newest version. Of course, when I went to McDonald's to use it...it failed...as it always has ( I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus at one point). I've never seen NFC actually work for real. I don't know what it is, but maybe the people that run the businesses don't have it turned on correctly. I was really wanting to see it work too.

[MOD] Google Calendar with Textview (month) - 31.05. Update

Guys, although the Nexus 7 and the GNx have almost the same screen resolution, the N7 shows events in Textview whereas the GNx shows only small lines for an event, so I modded the Stock-JellyBean-Calendar for my GNx as you can see in the attached screenshot or here at directupload:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/121119/o9bix4gi.png
For any ROM out there I recommend using the latest market version of the calendar, as this is bug fixed by Google.
But which version you take is your own choice, both work perfectly on all JB-ROMs (4.1/4.2) including AOSP, AOKP, CM10, TWRP...
Just flash the zip from CWM, but do a nandroid before (for your own security).
Update 07.11.2013:
- maintaining the newest version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47222855
Update 31.05.2013:
- Updated to new market version (v 201305280)
- CWM package
Update 13.12.2012:
- Updated to new market version (v 201212060)
- Lockscreen Widget for 4.2
- New event picker in month view (long press)
Just flash in CWM. If you encounter errors, please uninstall any previous calendar with Titanium Backup and try a new flash. The problems with my old mod were signing problems, sorry for that.
Update 16.11.2012:
- Updated to new market version (v 201210220)
- according to Google, the battery consumption should be lower
- If you don't see the calendar after flashing, please flash the first market version first, reboot, then flash the new version.
Thanks to Finner42 for this idea, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34591851&postcount=64
Update 18.10.2012 the 2nd:
- Added modded new market version (v 201210120)
Update/Changelog 18.10.2012:
- CWM flashable zip
- Changed from GoogleCalendar 4.1.1 to 4.1.2
- some small fixes with the color squares
Old (archived) files:
Market Calendar 201212060: http://ul.to/h25nmaoz
Market Calendar 201210220: http://ul.to/0p2w4aqh (don't use!)
Market Calendar 201210120: http://ul.to/mxq278r8
AOSP 4.1.2 Calendar: http://ul.to/53ih6ior
Differences between the stock 4.1.2 and the market calendar:
The market version syncs back events up to one year, whereas stock calendar syncs back to 3 weeks only (standard android behaviour). To get synced one year when you had stock calendar before: you have to delete the data in -> settings -> apps for "Calendar" and "Calendar Provider" and sync again manually after that.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you have updated the calendar via market before, you have to uninstall this update before flashing, otherwise you will see nothing. Android prefers the .apk in /data/app over any system-apk in /system/app - that is a pretty normal behaviour.
Enjoy!
Additional Information:
Just a note as some people are unsure about GApps and CM10/AOKP. This is only important for people who like to know deeper. If you flash via CWM or are on Stock ROM, you don't have to worry about this:
In every official GApps (even the newest ones) are the old sync adapters from ICS which work with CM10 calendar (and have dark colors).
The market calendar and the stock-JB-calendar have its own sync adapter included, so you should delete GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk too, when you delete (CM10-) Calendar.apk
NEVER delete calenderprovider.apk, account information and the data is stored in there!
My modded calendar has an update script which cares for either situation, so that it can be used in CM10 and/or StockROMs.
Besides: Paranoid Android users don't need the modded calendar, as you may use tablet UI in market calendar for sure.
If you like to mod yourself, here are instructions for code changes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35414528&postcount=80
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ROM-COOKERS:
Surely you may include this mod in your ROMs if you like it. I got a few PNs the last days but wasn't online here, sorry for that.
I got so much from xda and from other (real) developers, that it makes me happy if you consider this mod useful!
Added CWM flashable zip, should be easier for all of you.
Works on every JB-ROM, odexed and deodexed (AOSP, CM10...)
Please do a Nandroid before, just in case...!
Thank you for this mod. I like it. But can you please do this with the calendar from Android 4.1.2. or tell me how I can do it by myself. I don't know if there is something new in this version of the calendar but it got a new version number so maybe some Bugfixes.
According to the official Google changelog there is only a widget background change in 4.1.2, otherwise it's the same as 4.1.1
You have to modify "integers.xml" for the text size labels and "bools.xml" for general work of the new layout (in /res/values)
In addition, some things are hardcoded in /smali/com/android/calendar/month/MonthWeekEventsView.smali (text size of event time and the color squares)
In summary there's no real difference between those calendars. If I'm on 4.1.2 I will change this and update this post, in the meantime you can use the 4.1.1 with no loss of function.
[edit]
New 4.1.2 is online
I flashed this on top of the 4.1.2 Calendar update published on Google Play but did not work.
I then restored a 4.1.1 Calendar backup from Titanium then reflashed the zip but still didn't work.
I then uninstalled the 4.1.2.Calendar update directly from Google Play (not from Apps or Titanium Backup) and then it worked.
FYI.
I will update this thread in a few hours, am on mobile now.

[APP] New Google Maps v7.0.0 [4.1/4.2]

There is an update to Google Maps currently rolling out, version 7.0.0. More screenshots and info coming, it's a pretty significant update, hence the bump to 7.
New so far:
- Refreshed UI, new splash screen
- Blue dot redesigned
- Slide-out settings menu to match other Google apps
- Offline maps are now saved by saying/typing "OK Maps" when you have the area in view (see here and here)
- No more Latitude
Play Store changelog:
What's in this version:
*This update will be gradually rolling out to Android 4.0.3+ users over the next few weeks. Users with Android versions below 4.0.3 should visit http://goo.gl/5AMJS to find out more about the Google Maps app available to you.
- New design for Android phones and tablets
- Enhanced navigation including live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting
- Explore: A new way to browse and discover popular local places to eat, drink, shop, play and sleep

v7.0.0 = View the area you want to cache then click search and type "ok maps" and voila offline
But they also released another update v7.0.1 which lets you do the same thing for the most part but gives you an option to save for offline but requires you to clear the words from the search bar and the option shows up at the bottom of the page.
The new features/looks are great, but the performance is disastrous, even on my S4.

But it only saves really small areas and in some cases not at all. Not very useful.

Yes, but it is tedious, before I could cache blocks about 75km square.

I don't know why but on street view they got rid of the man you could drag anywhere to move to that location. Now you have to just keep taping forward which is loads slower.
I tried to use Navigation on my Nexus 7 today but i couldn't get the "GPS" view/interface (navigation GUI) with the new version of Google maps.
Then i picked-up my Nexus 4 and that view is available.
Anyone know something about it? Maybe i need to clear cache, data or something.

Does anyone have a link to download the maps version for the Nexus 7 on 4.2.2 before these new updates? I'd really appreciate it. Given all the different versions floating around based on OS version, etc, I'd prefer to get the right one.
The loss of the distance measurement tool on maps and the ability to move around street view efficiently caused me to revert to the original 4.2.2 released version (6.14.2) by doing an "uninstall updates". I'd prefer to run a newer version but before the new crippled release.

Thank you!!! That got me from v6.14.2 in the 4.2.2 distribution back to v6.14.4 before the new release.

[Q] stock email and s voice apps.

Hello All,
I'm new to the forums, new to android, and new to rooting. I recently switched over from iphone, and it has been a bumpy yet fun ride.
I have an unlocked Galaxy SIII SGH-i747M running the Illusion ROM, android ver. 4.2.2 illusion ver. 4.2.2.2.1 beta
I really miss the stock email app and S-voice, I'm trying to get them back. I've tried the email app from this package:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28000240
as well as this modded app here, which installed OK but doesn't seem to be working as it will not sync any mail no matter what sync settings I choose.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28246860
I don't know what to do about the S-voice. So far what I've read says it cannot be done. Any ideas guys? Please go easy on me, as I am new to this stuff and yes, I did do my research on the forums and wasn't getting anywhere on my own. Thanks!

While I'm only 99 percent certain, I'd say this is not going to work for you. From what I know, both of these apps are integrated and reliant upon the Touchwiz interface to work correctly. May be a stupid question, but have you correctly set the incoming/outgoing servers in the email app?

Yes, I believe so. I used the same settings which did work when I had touchwiz. I could tell it was talking to the server because it still prompted to accept all the security settings, etc. it requires, just would never display anything in the inbox.
I did get the s voice to work last night, though (yay) a couple bugs but will work for me. If I cant use the stock email app, do you have any other suggestions? Something lightweight and clean?
Thank you.

When you installed the email APK, did you use a package installer or did you place it in system/apk? If you took the latter step, you may have needed to fix the permissions of the apk. If you used a package installer you may want to try the system apk method. Let me know if you don't fully understand and I will try to be of more help. BTW the permissions should read rw x r x r
. Another thing to look into would be to install the secemail.apk from the S4, as it may be an Android 4.2 thing.
