WiFi Tether - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Ok, I know I saw something yesterday as I was hunting for a Nexus 7 mod that said it was for enabling tethering on the GS3 without needing root. PA, CWM, CM10, one of them. I would have sworn on whatever is Holy that I had bookmarked it, but now I can't find it. Does anyone know of a confirmed working app that will let me tether my Nexus 7 to my Tmo GS3? It can be root or unroot mod, I just want it functional before I go start tinkering with my phone and void the warranty, or worse yet brick it. (I am tech savy enough that that shouldn't happen, but ya never know...) Anyone know what I am talking about? I want to say it was green lettering and was a flashable mob that did not require root from one of the better known modders, but can't for the life of me remember who.

Your thoughts are all over the place.. does it matter if it uses root or not?

My apologies, I was getting frustrated. I would prefer no root, mainly just because I don't want to hassle with it, however, if I have to root it to make it work, then I am willing. I just want a functional wifi tether so I can tie my Nexus 7 into my unlimited 4G data plan.

You'll need root for easiest tether

You need to look for FoxFi

FoxFi is the app that lets you tether even if the device is NOT ROOTED

Let us know if Foxfi works for you, I haven't had any luck with it. SVTP, while pricey (~$15), works for me* and is still a lot cheaper than paying Tmobile for the privilege. Of course, who knows what may or may not work after applying the latest (or any other) update (I don't yet have it).
* Just be sure to hit menu and change the profile to Samsung ICS

Why don't you just make a new APN like the previous devices?
If you are using the T-Mobile device just need to make a new apn with the following:
Name: T-Mobile Internet
APN: epc.tmobile..com
mmsc: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
leave everything else blank save and set that APN
Then you can just use the built in wifi hotspot on the device and worked for me.
I am just not sure if this works after the newest T999UVALJ4 version of software.
I have a One S as well and after the most recent update to it I can no longer set my own APN on the device. It just sets it back on its own.
I doubt it but is possible the new version might do this too.

Yeah it does not work on the Unlimited Plan. Have my phone rooted trying other apps to get it to work. Wifi tether isn't consistently working for me, been playing with different settings - tried Auto, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GSM). Always a hit and miss thing. Tried using my work laptop or wife's Ipad and same issue, hit or miss. I cannot pinpoint what is causing this at the moment. Anyone else had better luck? Thanks in advance.
EDIT:
Tried FoxFi but could not connect either laptop or Ipad with it.

I meant user agent on computer browser not phone.
You want to set the user agent of your computer browser to that of your phone.

Using Wifi Tether app by Muller, Lemons, Buxton. Can't even see my SSID. Tried generic ICS/JB (wlan 0)/ (wlan 1), no go.
But using same App with wife's Sprint (rooted) and set to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) and it works flawlessly.
If I use T-mobile's, my laptop sees the SSID and connects only thing is my laptop goes to T-mobile site telling me I need to activate Wifi Hotspot for additional fee.
Gonna try to redo the root procedure.
Thanks for reply.

Everything stock just root.

right that is why on your browser on the computer you will need to change the user agent.
I recomend using chrome on the computer with "ultimate user agent switcher" extention.
The user agent that I use and allows me to tether no problem is:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.34 Safari/534.24
No matter what option you use for hotspot on the t-mobile network you will need to change the user agent for it to work. Or if a program can over ride it, but I haven't found any that has.

How can we do that if the computer won't even connect to my phone?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

If you can't connect then there is something else wrong with the way it is getting setup or something on the computer.
What he was referring about was the redirect. @N1M1TZ was saying can connect with the built in t-mo app but gets redirected.
The user agent change will get it to stop redirecting.
Are you using a stock rom or a moddified rom?
I am using stock and not rooted. Just need to change that APN (make sure it saves) and enable the wifi tethering built into the phone.
If the computer can't see or connect to it try a different computer or wifi device if possible. Because if you are on stock and can't be seen or connected on anything there maybe something wrong with the phone.
If just one computer can't see or connect to it but another does, then it is a problem with the computer.
If you are rooted and running a customer rom I would suggest trying a different rom or flashing a stock rooted one.

Apn just redirects? And I'm stock No root.

Right if you make a new apn you can use tethering fine with the built in tether options on the device.
It is the APN in the device and a hidden program that causes the original redirct for when you first turn it on.
the new apn you should make would be
name: tmo data
apn: epc.tmobile.com
mmsc: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
leave everything else blank.
save and set that as your apn.
Would just need to change the user agent string on your browser.

WIFI Tethering on T-mobile

Do you know of any settings to have wifi tethering work without the hotspot plan?
With my old HTC sensation I just had to create a new apn with (epc.tmobile.com) to make it work, but with the GIII this is a no go....
If you are rooted...this works great:

Foxfi In the Play Store. No root needed just read the description to make sure it supports your device.
Thanks, will try Foxfi and let you know if works.

several us (at least on verizon) seem to be able to do it just with toggles. Those with other carriers let us know if it works for you...
Thanks for the info,
I have tried the widgets option but still no go.
Still getting the T-Mobile Hotspot signup page...
anyone able to get this working?
I've also noticed this to be annoying. My HTC Sensation would tether no problem on the same data package. Now T-Mobile has it locked down somehow. Hmm.

Do this, go to Google Play and download (WiFi Tether For Root Users) open the app go to settings, 1) Change device-Profile to Generic ICS. 2) Change Setup-Method to Netd (master). Now go back and click on the big WiFi icon to start tethering, soon as the system finds the device pull down the notification and authorize it, make sure the Access-Control is enabled., your're all set, good luck.

I guess this will encourage him to ROOT, one of the perks you get being rooted.
T mobile can be a real pain in the ass with blocking tethering. I don't believe the app matters best way I know to get around it is to change the user agent on the computer and do not use internet explorer. I believe chrome and firefox have plugins for that.
I tried FoxFi on a non-rooted stock t999, doesn't work. Sends out the wifi signal, but the computer never actually connects to it. Keeps giving me some kind of error when trying to connect to wifi.
Using the built in tether wifi option, I can connect to the wifi being supplied by the sgs3, but any web activity takes me to the t-mobile hotspot sign up page.
OP use firefox, not chrome to tether. seriously.
and you can try downloading the 'tether' app from the clockworkmod website. google it.
I tether my nexus 7 from my sgs3 with foxfi and its really simple. Just make sure u install pdanet on the device u want to tether. I'm doing a tether with Bluetooth.

Hi!
I just installed Foxfi app. on my phone. I noticed there is also an app. called "Foxfi AddOn" and according to the description it provides some optional features to the Foxfi application.
Has anyone installed this app? The reason I am asking this question is because I noticed that by agreeing to install this app., personal information is accessed ("general info about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private info").
The above quote I got when I press to "install" the app., so I would appreciate any feedback/advice on installing this app. Thanks!

AT&T Galaxy S3, what tethering app is everyone using?

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.

if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Wireless tethering app that bypass carrier detection.

Hi, I've been looking for something like this for a while and tried pretty much all the options on google. And my last hope, PdaNet with FoxFi addon has failed me too, so I've pretty much run out of options.
So, what I'm looking for is to turn my GN into a wireless router without my network detecting that I'm doing so. A lot of the tethering apps out there can achieve this by enable Bluetooth or USB tethering, but that's not how I want it, I want to turn it into a wireless router. Sadly FoxFi fails everytime I try to enable it.
So any of you genius out there knows of an app that can do this, please share. Thank you so much in advance.

If you root and flash any custom rom, it has native built in tethering. As for unrooted apps u named them all
I actually have the AndroidME custom rom installed and have root. It does have the native tethering option, but I always thought that feature is detectable by the wireless carriers. Or have I been torturing myself this whole time? lol.
The native tethering app goes undetected for me when I use my laptop, but if I connect my ps3 to it, I get the redirect when trying to use the browser. None of the third party apps work on my Rom at all. Frustrating, but I've just gotten used to not using my ps3 online.

If your on tmobile Try this..
Create new APN
Settings, wireless and networks, more, access point names.
Name it some thing like "data" and under APN put "epc. T-Mobile.com" (no quotes)
Leave everything else blank and save, then set as default.
Profit
Hope this helps.. used to work on my amaze.
This always solved
the T-Mobile nag screen problem
If foxfi didn't work then there is a setting you need to ad to your APN settings.
I use the default tethering app in android and haven't had any problems.
What I did was make sure my APN type in my APN settings read the following with no spaces.
"default,supl,mms,dun"
You should be able to use the default tethering and hotspot with no problems after that.
Works on both stock and rooted devices across the board.
If your running jellybean, then you don't have to add "dun" but I add it anyway for good measure.
Happy tethering.
Thanks for the tips, gonna be moving to simple mobile next month and hopefully these tricks will work.

I don't know which one of your fixes work but I did both and I now have wifi tethering using Fox-fi unrooted with my unlimited T-mobile 4g data plan! Thanks! Been searching for days on how to get it to work since I got my Nexus 7.
And it seems to work fine with the native hotspot app. I just downloaded an additional widget called Hotspot Toggle to make it easy to turn on and off.
Thanks again folks!
The easiest way is to use a User Agent Switcher.
You can read more details about it on here - http://gezby.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=69
Download "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Widget" and put that on a homescreen. A simple push of that icon will activate native tethering and bypass carrier check ups. Been using it for the last year with zero issues.
FWIW I've been using Native tethering since I first bought my VZW Nexus in December without a hitch. Since switching to T-Mobile I have also been using the Native tethering to my Nexus 7 without issue. I haven't used a tethering app since the gingerbread days

[Q] Wireless Tethering?

Now that I've rooted my phone, I've been messing around trying to get tether. Was wondering if anyone else has had any luck. I've frozen tetheringprovision with Titanium backup, but when I go to use the hotspot app it just freezes my phone for a minute.
I've tried opengarden, wireless tether for root, foxfi and barnacle (Including some reconfiguration)
No luck. Just wanted to see if anyone's found a way to tether on Wi-Fi yet.
Thanks!
Doubt it will work but on my HTC one S from Tmobile the work around is to add your own APN and just put epc.tmobile.com and leave the rest blank and than it lets you by pass the need to pay for it. I haven't gotten my note 2 yet so I cannot even test but just giving input.
I rooted, and froze the tether provision file.
App fails.
Same here tried several apps.

My sole APN on the stock rom is epc.tmo, so sadly I can't try that.
Seems like the built in tether app is not just blocked by the provision app, but I'm guessing needs an approval response from it.
Sadly most of the 3rd party tethering apps are having issues with the way jellybean does things. I shall be patient and enjoy my hotspot for now.

T-Mobile 2.5GB limit tether workaround on native t-mobile hotspot (stock ROM)

by using the stock native hotspot feature, i reached the maximum 2.5gb and received text messages from t-mobile saying its blocked and i can use it again next billing cycle.
by breaking it, you simply add APN. same settings and the only difference is change the APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 then save it.
im a mac user so safari no issues or whatsoever, but on chrome you need to change your UA to safari 5
Goodluck!

thank you
Just to clarify, You're only using Safari browser on your Mac? I take it that if you use Firefox it wouldn't work?
For those using a OpenVPN Client app has it already changed to IPV4/IPV6. I'm curious if you would have to create a new APN anyway or just use the APN that you're already on that is already switched to IPV4/IPV6?
I'll test it out as soon as I run over, which is soon and will report back.

im using safari and chrome. i tried downloading safari and i got flagged by t-mobile. im happy with Safari and Chrome so im all good.
and by the way, we have 2 ipad's and tablet and no issues connecting with my note 3 with this setup i posted.
you have to create a new APN since the stock APN is not editable, blurred everything..
Thanks a lot for the info!
Quick question (keeping in mind I have not done (wifi) tether via a hotspot:
I understand the useragent switcher is needed to surf the web via Chrome (for non-Mac users who can't use Safari) when using this thread's technique.
However if, e.g., I want to use this free hotspot tethering option (beyond the 2.5 GB of hotspot included for free by T-Mobile) to simply watch Netflix (via the app and not via the browser) on a tablet or laptop using the Note 3's data connection (as opposed to being interested in browsing the web), then am I right to assume I don't need to worry about first firing up my web browser on the tablet (e.g. Chrome and UA switcher method) to establish the data connection like some VPN's force you to do?
So far I have actually not even used ANY of the 2.5 GB included by T-Mobile (I have not done any tethering with my Note 3 yet sinceI have wifi via my cable internet at home and have not needed it on vacation yet either).
Nevertheless, I am still interested in exploring the technique described here to get it for free beyond the 2.5 GB (never know when I might be on vacation and don't want to risk going over).
PS: Here is a similar thread:

I will try this
I am going to try this technique for the next few days. Thanks for the post! I have been using the WIFI Tether- Treve Mod for the last few months with no many issues. I did have to use the user agent switcher for chrome though. Last month I used 28GB of mobile data.

Processes
When i was on US Cellular There was a process that was called "synchronos" that was designed to check with US cellular's network to see if you were able to tether, and "police" the amount of data you were allowed to tether. I just switched to T-Mobile today.. I havent found that process yet.. Anyone know what process T-Mobile uses to check the status of your tethering package? I can freeze it with Titanium backup and tether all i want.

OK, question from a noobie - at least where tethering comes in.
I've been reading this thread (forgive if I should have done this at the end of the most recent message, not familiar with appropriate
protocol) and want to clarify my own understanding while questioning UA.
I migrated from Verizon and immediately came upon the 2.5 Gig limit everyone is talking about. I found an on-line resource that showed me
how to change my Access Point Name from T-Mobile US (apn = epc.tmobile.com) by creating a new one with apn = ipv4.
Now I'm able to tether without T-Mobile sending me notifications with respect to their 2.5 Gig limit.
Question: Have I effectively by-passed their limit by doing this, or do I also have to look at UA switching? I'll have to admit I'm not at all
familiar with the UA thing.
I'm tethering my Galaxy Note 3, while my wife is tethering her Ipad 4 (using Chrome.)
Just don't want to get hit with a big bill for the extra Gigs.
Thanks a lot.

What settings do you use? I cannot get this mod to work
It's a VERY valid concern. Anyone that has hit the limit on tethering will tell you that T-Mobile DOES NOT give you more tether data and bill you later. They will stop you and suggest you purchase more. No unexpected big bills should be in your future due to tethering.

I changed the APN Protocol to IPv4/IPv6, installed Chome UA Spoofer on my laptop, and Safari 5 works like a gem.
MUCH appreciated.

I use the user agent switcher below. I have to use "Googlebot (Google's spider)" though. I can still tether to my tablet with no issues. Using APN protocol IPV4 or IPV4/IPV6 works for me as well.

Idiots Guide to Tethering
I know this may seem like a silly request, perhaps even an unfair one, but I've been looking for a way to tether my T-Mobile Samsung Note 3 device since I switched from Sprint using the iPhone device last November.
I downloaded Fox Fi, Hotspot Toggle, and so many other apps I read about on blogs. This is the closest one that addresses a problem I've been running into.
When it comes to technology and setting things up, I'm a complete moron. Some of the terms I know little about, which is why I'm hoping someone could post the process for setting up our phones in steps, and from what I've read so far, what web browsing software not to use or only use when tethering our devices on a Mac, iPad or other devices. I've been traveling back and forth to Fresno in Central California to care for my ailing mother, and the ony wifi signal I got was from my phone. Unfortunately, 2.5GB disappears quickly, and I can't be increasing my Hotspot data plan every time I visit home.
Thank you one and all for being supportive and understanding.
Hi
I've been using a Lollipop 5.0.1 Note 4 port ROM on my Note 3, tethering worked like a charm. I've used up to 125GB monthly for the past 4 months on T-Mobile tethering to my Mac, AppleTV, tablets, desktops, laptops... you name it. Obviously custom ROMs aren't perfect. Battery life is horrible, NFC & GPS doesn't work, Bluetooth and WiFi issues, some stock apps don't work as they should, etc...
I had to upgrade to T-Mobile's Official firmware due to a big malfunction that erased all my data and almost bricked my device. Immediately rooted and downloaded a Deodexed and Knox free Tmo firmware. In just a day I hit the cap on my 5GB tethering plan and my speeds have been reduced to 128kb... Spotify doesn't even load any music on my iPad and I don't even wanna try loading Netflix on my AppleTV.
I've been wondering wth makes a custom ROM able to tether freely and how I could apply that to my "almost" stock ROM. I've read so many threads and comments, applied some suggestions and used some apps and none works for me. I'm not a developer neither a noob, but any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks
