New Nexus Just Ariived - Next Steps? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

UPS just dropped off my new Galaxy Nexus (didn't want to wait for the new ones, $349 seemed decent, unless it drops a ton, no regrets, don't need the latest and greatest, etc...). I've got a Nexus S I'm going to give to my kid, who's on a RAZR v3 right now. I'm on AT&T US.
I'm familiar with all the advanced Android stuff, running a Nexus 7 with Rasbean Jelly and Franco/Trinity...but I've only done a phone once (the Nexus S) and I had some problems with Baseband showing NO DGS XXXXXX and no signal, but got it working finally by flashing Rasbean and the latest baseband.
I obviously want this to go as smooth as possible. Right now it is at ICS 4.0.4 and I haven't connected it to WiFi yet, or put the Sim in it from the Nexus S. I've written down the IMEI and Baseband (It's not the latest UGLH, but I have that, and the RIL).
Should I unlock/root/recovery (TWRP) and flash Rasbean first, and then stick the SIM in...or should I start it up with the SIM and accept any OTA that comes? Then do the above?
Do I need to call AT&T and give them the new IMEI?
I plan on switching to Straight Talk, and I know I need to put in the IMEI. The ST Sim should be here any day. I'm confused about what IMEI I need to give them when they port over my number...the currently up and running Nexus S that AT&T has in their records, or the GNex (after calling AT&T)?
What steps would you guys do if you were doing the above?
Thanks,
RF

Stay stock and test it out for a bit. That way when you flash a rom and something goes wrong you wont blame the developer for a hardware failure.

I would accept the OTA to get the latest firmware (bootloader, recovery, radio, etc) & I agree with Darunion, stay stock for a little while & make sure everything works before flashing a custom ROM

Ok, connected to WiFi and got pushed JB 4.1.1 JRO03C. Didn't check the bootloader, Radio stayed the same at I9250XXLF1.
RF

Should be another OTA coming to upgrade to 4.1.2 (JZO54K)

Thanks for the help. Went all in, couldn't wait. Rasbean Jelly 4.1.2 UGLH1 Radio and RIL. Running like a top.
Thanks again,
RH

It's always a good idea to use the stock ROM for a while first before you flash a custom ROM. It makes you appreciate the features of the custom ROMs a bit more.

[Q] ICS 4.0.2 (ICL53F) (F)OTA due in Europe (Netherlands)

Couldn't find the thread while scrolling through numerous threads, so many have been written. I currently own the SGN with official 'yakju' build from Google, ICS 4.0.1.
It is well known the OTA 4.0.2 ICL53F has been rolling out in Europe. I am however still on 4.0.1 (ITL41F) and selecting software update showing there are no updates available.
Anybody already received the update to 4.0.2 (with a fair few bug fixes) in the Netherlands? I am starting to think we do get our updates fairly slow in the Netherlands.
I live in Sweden and have a British (UK) handset bought from Clove in the early days of December.. I'm still on 4.0.1 (ITL41F) as well! Hopefully we will start seeing 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 rolling out soon
No update here. Yakju build..

I ended up flashing the 4.0.2 stock image from http://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html and just wiped my phone and set it all up again.

Thanks guys for your replies Knowing I, with many, am not alone with 4.0.1

I assume method 2 in this post can help you (and myself if I decide to manually update).

I got the 4.0.2 update on my NL purchased GN (studentmobiel.nl) almost as soon as I took it out the box... in fact I got the notification before I even had a chance to root and unlock it, this was way back before Christmas (I got one of the first batch of deliveries).
I'd heard they've pulled the update due to some issues with the build. Probably releasing 4.0.3 soon, though
You don't need root to install a stock image but I think the bootloadee must be unlocked.

Hmm this is one of the reactions I was hoping for 'cause I too ordered it at studentmobiel.nl and nothing yet!
I haven't rooted the GN yet but am waiting for the FOTA. I know updates are spread over a period of time but still odd. You think it's related to a specific provider?

Yeah heard that too so the update never reached mine (and a lot of others) before it was pulled out.
Well time to wait or to root and flash some then, cheers!

If Google fixed something in 4.0.3, it should be released with newer built number. 4.0.4? Or 4.1 that was discussed a bit lately?
My only hope is battery life improvement and faster performance

I believe they fixed a few things in our build 4.0.1 that resulted in 4.0.2. I don't know exactly what the changes are for 4.0.3 although I'm running 4.0.3 on my SG S 1 but that is custom CM9.
I have to say my battery is great on our SGN and it's really fast in it's performance, especially if I compare it to SGS 1 with ICS. Ofcourse we have a way better processor, memory etc. in our SGN.

That's weird. I'm pretty sure i have had my GNex in the first "Studentmobiel.nl" Delivery Batch and was delivered on the 8th of December.
Untill now, i did NOT receive any OTA Update so i'm still running 4.01 Yakju.
The phone came SIM-locked Free, in combination with Vodafone SIM. But i'm still using my KPN SIM and did not even used my Vodafone SIM-card yet.
What could be the difference? You do have received the OTA Update!

No mate, I live in Belgium and have the GSM version, still on 4.0.1 ! I heard that 4.0.3 is much faster !

Not sure.
Remember the 4.0.3 update was halted - I'm not sure about the 4.0.2 update.
I had a VF SIM in when I got my OTA but like yours mine was SIM free and unlocked.
But really, just put a custom 4.0.2 or 4.0.3 rom on there and be done with it...

I've learned that Unlocking the Bootloader will wipe all my data?
Can you, besides having Root, explain the advantages between Custom and Stock Rom?

Yes, I'm running MCR Ir8 (Modaco Custom ROM) which is actually a tuned version of stock, not a full custom ROM. As a result it's very, very stable. It's based on 4.0.2 which is Google's latest release for the GN.
If you run a custom ROM you can even get a 4.0.3 one which is compiled directly from Android source code. But there's a reason Google hasn't released 4.0.3 yet via OTA so you can read into that what you will - 4.0.3 is cutting edge now but may not be 100% stable.
Nevertheless, I used the 4.0.3 AOKP ROM for a bit and thought it was great.
Custom ROM's tend to be more feature rich than stock ROM's including many settings that people feel are "missing" from stock roms... some of which are mods that can be applied to a stock rom but others are changes that go much deeper. For example CyanogenMod, by far the most popular custom rom in Android world, has and additional 30 or so options you can set that you can't do with a stock rom - from memory management to user interface to all sorts.
Yes you will wipe your phone if you unlock the bootloader. There is a way to backup beforehand using ADB, I think there's a guide here somewhere??? But in my mind it's worth the pain, you only have to do it once.
Best way to discover the wonders of a custom rom is to install it and have a play... I'd recommend either MCR (very close to stock) or AOKP (bleeding edge 4.0.3).

There was 4.0.3 update, and the 4.0.4 update was just a leak (only official for GSM model). The only way to get 4.0.3 is from a custom ROM that was built from 4.0.3 source.
There was never a 4.0.4 leak for CDMA. Only the radio dropped.
4.0.4 is only OFFICIALLY on GSM...but the source dropping means we can rip literally everything from it but the radios on our CDMA version.
Here are two 4.0.4 stock rooted roms.

I can't seem to find any 4.0.3...
But what seems to be the problem that you're having with 4.0.4 that you didn't on 4.0.3?
My issue is volume+ doesnt work.
Just tested.
Works fine with Lean Kernel 3.2.1 stable...as long as the volume increase supposed to be pretty minimal. Never bothered with it before.
Try that?

Potentially none: Haven't scanned the threads.
These won't change your radios...

You're mistaken. There was indeed a 4.0.4 CDMA leak back in February (Build IMM30B). I have been running said leak since it hit XDA. You had to be completely stock to flash it through stock recovery and it included new radios and a new bootloader.
The 4.0.4 CDMA radios running around were ripped from that same 4.0.4 CDMA leak.

what differences are there between the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to and the two 4.0.4 roms posted above, if any? is the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to an update or full ROM like above?
Full rom.
Just not compiled from source.
4.0.4 from source was released much more recently...
And Google provided "hundreds" of bug-fixes with it.
I'd recommend the Google-source base.

quick newbie question i suppose is kinda off topic.. i guess i'd just like some clarification. do the roms themselves contain the radios in them? for instance, if I flashed a custom rom, would my phone's radios be automatically changed to whatever that custom rom dev decided to use in his rom?
additionally, individual radios are also available to swap out without altering roms, correct?

Do I need to be running 4.0.x to run that 4.0.x radio? For example, if I try to run IMM30B, do I need to be on 4.0.4 ROM? also, what do people mean by make sure to check the MD5?
really appreciate all the help!!
No problem at all man.
And no.
Radios are interchangeable.
MD5 checks make sure you got a good download.
For example:
bd63961006aa65e88100017bab2c7fbb
http://synibox.info/synik4l/razorloves/4.0.4Radios.zip
If you download directly on your phone...quite a few applications can verify MD5's.
Root Explorer...Rom Toolbox...Pretty much any file manager.
Most you must long-press the file, and click "properties."
It should pop up a MD5: __________________________.
If it matches, it's safe to flash.
If not...delete it and re-download.
There are also quite a few free MD5 checkers available for your PC if you download on the PC and then transfer.

great will def check before flashing. lastly, my issue is this: i have strong signal where i live (i think its strong anyway, shows up as usually 3bar, never drops below, and a lot of times 4 full bars of 4G) but i notice it just drops all signal for about 5 seconds.. then my bars come back and a few seconds later my 4g bars come back after that.
what exactly is happening to my phone during this process? is this what people are referring to as hand off or is that simply changing between 4g to 3g, or 3g to 2g? is my issue something different, as in just dropping signal altogether?
finally, is there a specific radio you think i should try or could my problem possibly be a ROM problem? i'm on stock out of box 4.0.2 ROM and ICL53F

Selecting the correct radio. Please help!

Hello!
I had a quick question about selecting the correct radio for the Galaxy Nexus GSM. I am trying to flash yakju on my device (currently on yakjukr) and the radio included in the zip file I downloaded was maguro i9250xxla02. I wanted to make sure that the radio was compatible for my uses. I'm using the Nexus in South Korea, and wanted to make sure there won't be any problems flashing this radio on my phone.
If there will be a problem, is there a directory or list of compatible nations/phones? In the case that I do have to flash a korean radio(?) will it be compatible with yakju, or only yakjukr? Also I understand that if I flash the incorrect radio I may have problems with future OTA updates (I really want jelly bean ). Will the xxla02 radio present any problems for future updates? if so, is there a list of OTA friendly radios somewhere out there?
Sorry that there are so many questions, but any helpful replies will be GREATLY appreciated. I've received so much (and speedy!) help from this forum before.
Thank you.

All GSM GNex radios are compatible on all GSM GNex devices. Some may work better than others for you personally, but you won't damage anything by trying a bunch of them to see which is better for you.

Awesome. One more question: Does the radio use have any effect on when you receive OTA updates? for example If i have yakju flashed while using the radio KRLB1, would I receive jelly bean mid july like all the other yakjus? or a few weeks later with yakjukr. and I'm assuming from your answer that yakju is compatible with all nexus gsm radios?
Thanks efrant! I've actually been pouring over your HOWTO flash guide for this process.

The update depends on the build (i.e., yakju), not the radio. However, the update will not install if you are not using the corresponding radio. When the updates start to roll out, just flash the xxla2 radio if you are not using it, and the update will install.
Yes, all radios are compatible with yakju.

Can I just ask one last thing? (you guys are great). quantitatively, is there a way to measure good signal and data strengths? my status says -81dBm 15 asu. what do these numbers mean? and is referring to purely cellphone signal or 3G data speeds as well?

Help with Nexus update!?!

Hi guys. I'm from Brazil and the Galaxy Nexus is named Galaxy X around here, but it's the usual GSM thing that is out for AT&T. Anyway, I'm running stock ICS (4.0.2) and I checked Internet and discovered that several people are already running Jelly Bean due an OTA update by Google. But when I check if there are any updates on the phone, it just tells that it is updated. My question is: is it alright or I am missing an update? Should I root and use CM10? Will it take too long to get stable? Thank you, greetings from Brazil!

A little info. You could flash a Google stock image or choose one of the numerous custom ROMs available, only you can deside which is right for you.

Only yakju and takju builds of GSM Galaxy Nexuses are updated by Google, Galaxy X has a yakjuvs build and is updated by Samsung. Samsung promissed end of August as a deadline for JB on yakjuvs (no 4.0.4 for yakjuvs).
If you don't want to wait, there are a ton of tutorials explaining how to flash a factory image, just get the jelly beans factory image and do it, but, be aware that you will loose all data in your phone (and by all, I mean ALL data, including "sdcard" data). If you don't want to lose all your data, cross your fingers and hope that Samsung deliver what they've promissed...
If you still need to ROOT and are worried about losing your data you can use the Wug's Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit.

Help with Updating Android on Unlocked AT&T S3 I747 for MetroPCS/TMobile

Hey guys so I decide to get the SGH-147 AT&T S3 off of ebay for MetroPCS which enabled me to get a 2 year squaretrade warranty. After looking back at it now, I feel it might have been a bad idea since Metro has a MIR 349.99 deal for their S3 version which would mean easier android update since it would be on Metro servers if I'm not mistaken. Anyway I can't return the ebay phone now unless there is some software or hardware problems within 30 days
So my problem
I am stuck on 4.1.1 on Kies and when I check for update, because the phone is based on AT&T servers, it won't work since I'm on Metro. I wanted to see if there is anyway for me to update my phone to 4.3 which is the current version. Although, I've heard some people have 4.3 problems?
If that's not advisable, could y'all tell me how I could atleast get to Android 4.1.2? Also is there a 4.4 update in the works?
I just got the phone today and would like to be running on something better than 4.1.1
should I flash the AT&T phone to a MetroPCS ROM lol, if any of those are actually available, or if I were to flash, should I flash it to Tmobile?

There are numerous options. The best depends on your choice. I recently rooted my AT&T phone and installed Cyanogenmod 10.2, based on android 4.3. Check it out. It is super cool.

Lets say I do it and I find out my singal or some issues I can't stand arise, can I reflash down to 4.1.1?
Btw any links to a stock 4.1.2 ROM? And do the battery on these phones run longer with newer Android flavors. The S3 battery I have is atrocious
AT&T 4.1.2 and 4.3 update is officially only available via OTA. But this requires being on the AT&T network. The are zip files available on XDA to get these updates but I strongly suggest you read up on things first.

Do you have any links on how to do the 4.1.2 update on an unlocked phone? I searched on google (admittedly i suck with google) but couldn't find much info.
