How important is the power/wake button? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My GNex took a bath today. I stuck it in a bag of rice and after a whole day, its back alive. Almost everything is working fine except the power button. The ROM I'm running allows to wake up the screen via the volume rockers. So, I'm good there. I have a toggle to put the screen to sleep as well. TiBu, TKT etc will let me reboot or reboot into recovery. PGM will also let me wake up the screen.
The only thing I'm missing so far is ability to take screenshots. Is there an app for that? Besides that, how important is the power button?
Also, so far every time I've removed the battery and popped it back in, my phone has booted up automatically. My fear is if for some reason, it doesn't power up, what would be my options? With the busted power button, how would I turn on my phone?

Power off/power on it's own (Alpha 3 CM9)

So A few days ago my phone started to turn off and turn back on randomly, Its hit or miss, Just starting to get annoying. Has anyone ran into this? Pretty much when my phone is off and I hit the power button it will go to the screen as if I'm holding the power button to do a screen shot. I'm pretty sure it's not my power button sticking. I think there is just something else going on.
Also when it does it when my charger is hooked up it will keep starting up and turning off till I unplug it.
I wasn't sure if it was a app I had downloaded so I deleted the last few apps I had downloaded, But still will turn on and off.
Anyone had anything?

I was having the same thing happening with cm9. I went ahead and tried out BLUKUBAN rom..very sweet one at that. better battery life. Try it out.
Well I updated to alpha 4. Still have the the random power off like I'm holding the power button down. So I'm thinking its something internal.
Guess ill unroot and take it back to sprint. Dang it!

I'm having the exact same issues. It started 2 days ago. I'm watching my phone turn off and on, on its own right now while plugged in.
Are you sure its not a bad power button? I found that even if i barely tap the power button without fully pressing it in, it will trigger a button press action, or a button hold action.
Please update if you resolve.

Major Catch 22 - Desire got Wet now have 3 issues! PLEASE HELP

Hi guys.
So i managed to get my desire wet/damp and whilst it still works it has developed 3 issues:
1) The weirdest of all - the phone wont go into standby, as soon as you press the power button or let it timeout the screen goes off and they instantly turns back on to the lock screen. If i leave it, it will timeout again on lockscreen and come back on, it does this forever. I have done factory resets etc, all the same. Weird right. As i result i would like to reflash the mod and see if that fixed it as assuming its software related (somehow).
2) Volume keys do not work - think means i had issues getting into recovery. Finally found a widget to do it and then....
3) Trackpad does not work in recovery so i cannot re-flash or try any new rom to see if that fixed (1)
Proper catch 22
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Install 4ext touch recovery.
Update after installing touch recovery
OK I HAVE AN UPDATE:
The plot thickens but i have managed to S-OFF my Desire and eventually install Clockworkmod Touch which obviously doesn't require me to use the trackpad button so I was able to use Recovery. I wiped the phone and tried reflashing the ROM i had been using (Insertcoin) but this made no difference, the phone still keeps waking up immediately that it goes to sleep (either with power button or by sleeping timeout).
So i decided to install a completely different ROM (CM10_VJ_4.1.2_v3.0) and this installed fine. Now the phone will go to sleep and stay asleep if I press the power button. Problem solved I thought!
Now when the phone is asleep 50% of the time, trying to wake it with the power button will cause it to reset immediately and goto the white HTC screen. When it restarted it sits on the unlock screen and keeps timing out, screen goes off, then immediately on again - weird. If i unlock and lock with power button it will behave. For some reason the Search key will wake the phone every time no issues. Only the power key to unlock causes it to reset. Phone is sleeping according to Battery info.
Any other suggestions for what I could try. Could this possibly be something hardware related now? If there a way i can log the key presses or reason it wakes/resets?
Any help really appreciated, the phone is pretty unusable with this reset issue now.
THanks
Bridgstfer
theres a few videos on youtube, if it was me i would take the phone apart and clean all round the buttons. mite solve it. But as it got wet, the water could of damaged something in around the trackpad r power button, hense always waking the phone.

Thanks mate. So i tried this and installed CM7 today and have discovered something. As i said above the volume down button doesn't work and the volume up only works with some persuasion. Once i installed CM7 the problem where I lock phone with power key and it instantly wakes up now persists (on the JB rom it at least stayed asleep but reset if power button was pressed again).
However whe i changed the display timeout to 15seconds i watched as it timed out and instantly woke then noticed the volume would increment down one notch each it woke up again. This leads me to think that rather then the volume down not working at all it is actually stuck down permanently and could be causing the issue here. Is there any way I can find out if this is the case and disable the volume keys through software or do i need to open up the phone and disconnect it?
Thanks for any help - i think we are getting there!

I actually worked out that the trackpad is being pressed down constantly too because on CM7 when i disable trackpad to wake the phone actually stays asleep. Stil the phone resets if i try to wake with power button though, must be something to do with the button combo being held down.
Is there any way to disable both volume and trackpad buttons at the kernal/system level?
Tried button remapper but does not allow to remap the trackpad press.
With a file explorer, go to
system>usr>keylayout and modify bravo-keypad.kl.
I'm just back from holiday where my Desire had a ten-minute swim in sea water!
Naturally it was stone dead when I remembered it was in my pocket as I waded across an inlet which was supposed to be ankle- deep but was over 1.5 metres in places
I thought there was no point in drying it out without first removing all salt so (minus battery and cards) held it under a tap for several minutes then left it to soak in tap water in the sink for 30 minutes.
I then dried it over gentle heat for a few days then tried the battery. The vibrator ran continually and the white LED flashed randomly but nothing else. After another two days drying it booted - but only into Fastboot and the vol switch didn't move the cursor. But after another two days - it worked almost perfectly! The vibrator is dead and the screen a bit streaky, but all the other sensors work just fine and it's quite useable.
I had been logging the hike using My Tracks and it actually shows the course going a short way into the sea.
do you have an assurance or warranty?
if yes-->change phone.

Thanks for this. I actually got an app that let you remap the keys but it does not let you do anything to the trackpad click button (which is now the one stuck down). See photo of whats in my bravo-keypad.kl file here:

Any other way i can disable the trackpad completely. Perhaps at the kernel level?
Thanks

[Q] Phone won't boot

Yesterday my phone was taking a really long time to do something simple (open an app I use all the time or something) and it was unresponsive to the normal power button function, so I pressed and held the power button until the phone turned off. I put it back in my pocket and forgot about it (at work). A few hours later I went to use my phone and it was nearly entirely unresponsive. If I press the power button it vibrates briefly and then does nothing. Same behavior after plugging in USB for power and after letting the phone charge for a while. I've also tried removing and replacing the battery and removing the external SD card.
I'm also not able to boot into recovery (TWRP installed). When I press and hold the volume up and down keys while booting the phone, I see SAMSUNG flash briefly and then the phone seems to shut back off.
Any ideas for recovery?
Thanks
Never mind, figured it out

It would be nice if you let us know what you did to fix it? Because my phone is now doing the same thing.

phone bricked?

Hi all
wondering if someone might be able to give me hand
my phone is rooted and am running CM10 stable and was working fine for about 3 months.
this morning i went to use the calculator and then the phone rebooted, and will not come back up.
I keeps viberating every coupel fo seconds. Tried to hold down power button but nothing happens. yanked battery and and reboot and i see the samsung slapscreen then it goes back to viberating
I tried to yank the battery, while holding down the power volume up/down to get into recovery but no luck. tried to yank battery and hold down volumne up/ down trying to get into download mode but also no luck
wondering if there might something i can try to get my phone back working
take care
i tried to take the phone apart to see if the power button was stuck but still now luck
Sounds like a power button issue. Its not that it gets stuck physically, the power switch gets messed up and acts as if its being held down. You can replace the switch or try a ghetto fix. I had to remove the power button from the case from my brothers phone. I took it out then plugged the hole with it by taping it on from the outside.
There are a few ROMs out there that allow you to use alternate buttons to turn off the phone and use volume keys to wake it up. So you will only need the power button to turn on the phone when its off completely. For my brothers phone I use a toothpick since I removed the power button.
It is just beginning to mess up on my phone bit it wasn't a severe enough case for me to remove the power button.
I would recommend trying to fidget with the button a bit, trying to see if you can get it out of the power loop (endless vibrating). What I do is pull the battery and press the button a few times. I even flick that corner of the phone a few times. Then I put the batter back in and see if it stopped cycling. If not I try to press the button a few more times and or give it a flick or two with the battery in. There seems to be no direct method that works but it eventually stabalizes.
If it does stabalize, I'd recommend testing to see how sensitive it is. If you can't put it in your pocket or even the slightest movement makes it cycle. I'd say you need to remove the power button or have the power switch replaced. If it stabilizes I would just get a ROM with the options I mentioned and stop touching the power button.

phone keeps turning on by itself after i put the battery back in

This has happened to me before where my phone would just turn off and not turn on until i take the battery out and put it back in. When i put it back in it goes on by itself and shows the samsung logo then nothing happens. The same would happen if i keep on taking the battery out and putting it back in. I read somewhere if you bang the side of the phone where the power button is it will fix it and i did that and it worked. Now this time it isnt working so i dont know what to do...
My best guess would be that its an issue with the power button being internally stuck. I had the same issue and fixed it by basically trying to pull out the button the get it unstuck then i got the app called easy touch android and I don't use my power button.

OK so is the phone failing to boot? Or is it just always turning on

i was able to fix it. i banged the side where the power button is and now it works. unfortunately thought if i press the power button the phone will go in and out of sleep and then restart because it thinks its being pressed when it really isnt. so i dont know what to do about that now
Well if you have a little hardware skills you could probably fashion a new button onto the sensor

i popped the power button out and i put it to the side so now its fine. I dont really need to use the power button. Paranoid Android has a feature to put the phone on sleep and I can easily go into recovery using rom manager
banging it is a temporary fix. ultimately i soldered off the power switch completely and replaced it
i wouldnt be able to do that aha
Had the same problem with my Samsung Infuse. Had to replace the power switch, PITA

i didnt think i could either for the record. try an old device first
I dont have an old device. Im hoping i can keep this working until i can get an LG G3. Right now I cant get it to turn on. I have to keep trying to turn it on and hope that i get lucky that it doesnt think the power button is being pressed
