Hello Epic XDA users!
Let me start by saying I got this from mrmako777
According to Android Police:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.

Note: 1) This APK was tested and fully stable on my Epic 4g, Android 4.1.1 PA 2.13, and is made for 4.0+ devices. 2) You must be rooted for this to work.
3) Flahing Gapps will not change this app. If you want to update to current distribution you MUST remove Gmail 4.2 FIRST!
Installation:
For this to work on my device I used a file-manager (in this case I used Solid Explorer) and renamed the file to Gmail2.apk as well as I used it to move/backup the file found in /data/app named com.google.android.gms-1.apk With the system partition set to RW, I also removed any other original Gmail.apk related apks in the system root/system/app.
Once the new file was placed into /system/app from the copy on my SD card I installed the file and synced to the network.

I have the stock framework, but since I used the motomoto theme, alot of apps are themed.
If someone with a i317 could copy their /system/app folder, zip it up and send it to me, i would be much appreciative. That was I can get out a stock de-odedex files with an extended power menu.
Its already done on mine, its just all my stuff is themed at the moment.

That's the right place. And I assume both of these are stock?
I'm on my way home now. Give me a few hours and I'll have them up.

Same.
Ah crap. I need more files than that. I themed to many. I'll get a hold of them somehow
Unless one of you guys who is stock, no theme will zip up your entire /system/app folder and send it to me?
Send me a PM with what you need.
nevermind... I just PM'd you with a link. if there's a problem with it, let me know - I also pulled a copy of the non-sparse partition that can be mounted via a loopback device.
Hi mates!!
I would like to share this modded app that i've just made.
All that i did was decompile apk and just change the old and annoying green android smiles with the pretty cool yellow emojis one!
It was made with SecMMS.apk taken from the latest leaked I9300 firmware (4.2.2) XXUFME3 DEODEXED.
It wasnt tested in any other versions of firmwares, so i cannot guarantee that it will work on another based firmware.
Install Instructions:
You will need root, deodexed firmware and a root browser, i recommend Root Browser Lite
Before you proceed to steps below, i encourage you to make a nandroid backup
1 - Download the attachment file, and rename it from SecMms_emoji.apk to SecMms.apk
2 - Browse to /system/app/ and rename the original apk from SecMms.apk to SecMms.apk.bkp, or whatever you want, or simply delete it.
3 - Copy the downloaded and renamed file SecMms.apk and paste it on /system/app/
4 - Change apk permissions to 0644 (rw-r--r--)
5 - Reboot your phone and youre ready to go!
Enjoy your new smiles and sorry for my bad english!
I'm not responsible for any damage caused on your phone. Using this apk you're must have agree with it.

I have created a desktop folder with sub folders from the current version of ES3 file explorer as shown below.

The folder works but not as I wanted. I wanted it to work like I had setup on my first gen N7 where when I open a specific file such as a pic, vid, music, or data type.....it would then have the pop up window to select which app to use to open the file. I also was able to make an icon using the android icon of the main folder but now have no options of long pressing any desktop folder icons.
So now when I open up any of the files, they open up in the ES3 app showing the root tree. Did I not create the main "STUFF" folder in the correct spot of the root directory to act like I had it setup in my older N7? I had created that in my old setup from someones tip/help article that was passed around last year.
Or is this all from the newer 4.3 Android OS and just the way it works now?
Thanks for any help. I searched for some time trying to find that old setup guide on creating separate folders in specific locations of the root for saving downloaded files of various types for quick access and organization. I suck at understanding the android file system and how it all works, sorry.

It's grayed out......so no default was set.
I pieced together 3 different animations to make a single bootanimation. Credits for the original animations go to the original creators.
I figured I'd share this bootanimation with the community. If you like, then enjoy.

WARNING: INSTALLING A BOOTANIMATION IMPROPERLY CAN PREVENT ACCESS TO YOUR PHONE REQUIRING RECOVERY TO FIX. PLEASE FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO INSTALL A BOOTANIMATION TO PREVENT ISSUES WITH YOUR PHONE.
Instructions:
1. Download bootanimation from this link: LINK
2. You'll need root access on your phone, as well as a file manager that has root access abilities. I use ES File Explorer and have the "Root Explorer" option turned on.
3. Using your file explorer, navigate to system > media
4. In the media folder resides an existing bootanimation.zip file. Either rename that existing file to something different for use later, or overwrite it by pasting the new bootanimation.zip file.
5. Now you must ensure the permissions are set properly for the bootanimation.zip file. I posted a pic below illustrating how the permissions must be set. This step is extremely important, so ensure its done right. If not set properly, you might lose access to your phone upon booting.
6. Reboot phone, and the new bootanimation will play.
nice to bad it wont work with stock :/.....but you should make more boot animations
Hi all,
I have Android Auto issue when I install some of custom ROMs, especially without GAPPS or has not built-in Android Auto app.
Since I have faced this problem many times, I think it may be a common problem for other users.
After I connect my phone to car visa USB cable, it gives this screen:
ROM file: riceDroid-12.1-202206220646-ginkgo-v2.5-GAPPS

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This problem blocks me to use many kinds of popular custom ROMs, especially as crDroid that has not include Google & GAPPS and gives very good performance to satisfy.
Could you help me about that to be able to fix the issue?

try making it a system app :
uninstall the app
reboot
create a folder named for exp "Auto"
paste the apk inside it (make sure the name of the apk is simple)
paste that folder inside : System/priv-app
if you use twrp set the folder permission to 755
if you use Ofox no need
reboot and let me know if it work

On reboot the added folder is missing from System/priv-app.
You can re-systemize apps using this:
https://github.com/entr0pia/terminal_systemizer
Tested this on Android 13 with Android Auto and got it working again.
