Hi
I have just picked up a secondhand Desire HD for my son.
The last owner said it was rooted but he must have unrooted it so its only got s-off at the moment.
After trying to find instructions for rooting I found what I believe are the most current ones and have spent the last 4hrs trying to root.
To root I need to downgrade the current rom.
to downgrade I need to make sure the the phone is locked .
to do this I need to use fastboot oem lock .
This is where I have the problem.
I get an error code saying ....
C:\Users\TV>fastboot oem lock
< waiting for device >
... INFO[ERR] Command error !!!
OKAY [ 0.000s]
finished. total time: 0.000s
I have tried searching for an answer but am not gettingn anywhere.
Can anyone help?
Thx bhayani

Yes , I need to relock it to then unlock it using the hack kit. I am sure it wasnt this difficult when i did mine two years ago.
I cant find a way to move this thread but will know for next time.

After You ran the command what does the bootloader say? The error Is usual And still relocks the bootloader.
Since you are s off all you need is custom recovery if its not already installed and then just flash a rooted ROM.

+1. If it was S-OFF, just see if you have a recovery installed. If not flash one using fastboot, and then flash a rooted ROM using the recovery. I don't think you need to go throught the process of relocking your bootloader.

Cheers both.
I will try via fastboot but am away all week for work so will be on saturday.
Hi Guys .
I tried your suggestion but didn't make any progress .
I verified the the phone was recognised by fastboot using "fastboot devices" and then tried but got the following response.
C:\fb>fastboot flash recovery CWM.img
sending 'recovery' (3554 KB)... OKAY [ 0.602s]
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 0.604s
any ideas?
Thanks
Are you sure its S-OFF? Can you post the text appearing on the bootloader screen here?
Try doing it with the hack kit from options menu.

Try eng s off then fastboot to flash recovery again. It's a fast simple process no harm trying
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
You just need recovery. Don't run the hack kit or downgrade since you already have s off. Boot into Rom and make sure USB debugging is enabled. Then from the hack kit install drivers for pc. Make sure HTC sync is not installed. Then plug phone in and use the hack kit option menu to flash recovery. Do this from the phone while its booted. It will restart your device and flash recovery. From there you can install a Rom that is rooted. Root is a Rom feature. Obtaining s off is the only reason to run option 1 from hack kit and you already have that.

What for? how? the froyo ENG S-OFF that will probably mess his bootloader or just the Modified ENG S-OFF included in the Hack Kit? When trying to help you should do that and not misguide someone to the point of helping messing his phone.
He just needs to flash CWM from fastboot again and then a custom rom....unlocked bootloaders have the ability to fastboot flash commands so it is useless.

Finally after hours and hours we have a Desire HD running a Jelly Bean rom

My sons newly sorted HD recognises T-mobile, O2, Giffgaff and orange but not the sim he wants to use which is a 3.
Just cannot work it out. I thought a phone was either sim unlocked or not. Grrrrr

No problem. Glad you have the phone back. Take into consideration, that not all sims work with sim unlocked devices. That is carrier related and not device related, so ask the company if that sim is ok for the device. :good:

the manufacturer off the phone by a machine, and changed the cid ro 11111111。somebody said the manufacturer locked the hboot。
nobody know?
and this phone on the fastboot screen ,we can not see bootloader
You could always try the xtc clip. That can usually do the job. And what hboot does the phone say?
Does it say LOCKED at the top?

no
because the hboot is 1.080000,if the hboot is 1.080099 on the top can see locked, but we can not to update to it,when put PG76IMG to the sdcard,
no update information.and this phone we can't use the ADB command, because the bootloader is not unlocked.

I'm in the same boat, there's plenty of information out there but it seems scattered.
I read through the Comprehensive S-Off/Root Methods thread and I think it goes like this:
Flash the RUU that's posted in that thread.
Re-lock bootloader (fastboot oem lock).
At this point it's like you're back to stock, correct?
Downgrade hboot if needed using the scripts shown (or does the RUU do this?)
S-off with revolutionary and get clockworkmod flashed.
Flash superuser / a ROM.
My question is: what will be the state of my phone after I flash the RUU listed in that thread? Will I be back to stock recovery? Will I need to downgrade hboot?

I think you have to flash the stock recovery first, before the RUU.
Flash the 2.3.3 ruu, make sure you have stock recovery, relock it then use revolutionary to get S-OFF.

Update 2: I've removed all the Method 1,2,3,etc. and added one universal method instead. Advanced, risky one kept.
Update: I've improved the thread, added pictures and what not. Hope you all like it now.
I'm not responsible if your phone blows up, bricks, sd card malfunctions or whatever during this tutorial!
Prerequisites:
A Locked Bootloader
RUU of the radio and / or HBOOT you want.
ADB installed
HTC Drivers
Goldcard (Steps at the end of the post)
Alright, then let's begin.
Download the Bootloader Control tool from this thread. (Thanks theq86!)
Put the zip on the root of your SD card.
Reboot into recovery and flash it.
A Menu-type thingy will appear. It will show you 4 options:
Unlock Bootloader
Lock Bootloader (Guarantee Mode)
Lock Bootloader (Relocked State)
Supervision
Now, what you have to do is, choose either the 2nd or 3rd option.
Then say "NO" to reboot. Go back to the main menu of CWM.
Advanced > Reboot Recovery.
It'll reboot the recovery and get you the main menu again.
Again go back to the bltool and this time, choose supervision.
After that, reboot back to the bootloader and into fastboot.
Download and get the latest RUU, that contains the newest radio and hboot: http://www.4shared.com/zip/gsk9viET/RUU_Marvel_S_Vodafone_UK_22616.html
Let the RUU do its job. After everything's done, your phone will reboot. (You will be factory reset, of course.)
And you'll have the latest Radio and HBOOT.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ADVANCED!:
Instead of using the RUU, if you just want the radio and nothing else, follow these steps:
This is not tested by me and I am not responsible if your phone blows up, bricks, etc.
Let the RUU open up till the I agree screen. (Picture above)
Now, open up task manager (Ctr-Shift-Esc / Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and go in "Processes".
Find a process called ARUWizard.exe. Right click and "Go to location".
You'll find a bunch of files and a rom.zip inside. Copy it to wherever you want, rename it to PG76IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD Card.
Then reboot your phone to bootloader. If all goes well, it will tell you its flashing. It will first flash the HBOOT and radio. Then, it will reboot.
**PULL OUT THE BATTERY WHEN YOU WILL SEE THE RECOVERY SCREEN AGAIN AFTER 1st RESTART (NOT SOONER!) **
And if everything was good, you wouldn't have lost your data, and you would have the latest HBOOT and Radio.
Thanks to Yasounet for this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO MAKE A GOLDCARD:
Use this to create one: http://www.mediafire.com/?hdxoe6e5km434tb
If you want to know when the SD card should be in the phone and / or in the reader, do this: (Refer to the Steps when you start the SimpleGoldCard software)
Step 1 of Software - SD should be in an SD card reader OR Set the phone in disk drive mode.
Step 3 of Software - SD should be in the Phone OR disable disk drive.
Good luck and Happy Flashing!
SomeDudeOnTheNet said:
Okay. Typing this out from my phone, so I'll make this quick. Sorry, but I'll elaborate when I'm on the PC.
So here's the steps to upgrading your HBOOT and radio.
1 - Lock your bootloader again by the following cmd: fastboot oem lock.
2 - Download and get the latest RUU, that contains the newest radio and hboot: http://www.filefactory.com/file/7c4...5.3038H_7.57.39.10M_release_261695_signed.exe
3- Start up the RUU till its on the I agree and crap screen. Ctrl-Shift-Esc. Hit the processes tab and search for ARUwizard.exe.
4- Right click and go to location. You'll see a bunch of files and a Rom.zip.
5 - Make a goldcard and just copy the rom.zip leaked from the RUU changing its name into PG76IMG.zip. Reboot to the bootloader.
6 - If everything went well it will detect the .zip, load it and then ask you to install it. First it'll install hboot and radio, then it'll automatically reboot and flash the entire updated system, boot, etc.
7 - If you still have your unlock_code.bin from htcdev, just reboot into bootloader, on fastboot mode, and just type: fastboot flash unlocktoken unlock_code.bin.
8 - It'll ask you unlock your bootloader, say yes, and then it reboots.
9 - And that's all, now you can reinstall again another recovery and flash then the rom that you want or restore and backup
I'll update this thread with pics for y'all tomorrow. My hands are paining now.

For the 2nd question:
The RUU doesn't go ahead if you have an unlocked bootloader. Since these are supposed to be used on official roms, they require a locked bootloader. At least that's what I think.

Slightly out of my depth here, but go to the thread demkantor posted a few posts up and read carefully, it will be very informative.
Also you appear to be using stock Android recovery, I'm not certain this is a problem but just to make sure I would find out how to use fastboot to flash clockworkmod recovery. Just Google "flash clockworkmod recovery fast boot" or something along those lines... If you already have android SDK set up, etc. Which I assume you must have being as you're rooted, it shouldn't be too difficult.
Sorry this is about as much as I can help, I'm sure demkantor will be able to help you through anything more than this.

thanks buddy ,
yes having andriod sdk .
THIS THREAD will teach you how to use fastboot to do
various things such as flash a new recovery. problem is you dont have a bootloader with fastboot
capabilities, well at least not many. do you know how the phone was rooted? if it was
done using the gfree method than you can simply flash one of the PC10IMG.zips from
post 30 in the thread linked above (done via bootloader) if not it could be an issue to use do this.
you can only flash update.zips through the recovery you have now and they more than likely would need to be signed by htc. if you dont have a working os right now then
you may need to flash an ruu (one that matches your phone) let me know where you stand on all this

give me link for rom for htc desire z which work fine on my phone
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ucdfd91qn7h1dbm/kTTY8yOJLN/PC10IMG
That's the link for some custom PC10IMG.zips but again I can't promise they are safe to flash if you just rooted your phone with some app.
Adb won't work being all you have is a stock recovery and no os, adb won't work in bootloader mode
As for an ruu, I don't what was specific to your phone, you can see if this command works to check, may not though
fastboot getvar all

I have an HTC Incredible 2 for Verizon version 2.2.1 and its is GSM Unlocked. I use GSM not CDMA. I want to root my phone to get the venom rom and version 4.0.3. I was able to get S-OFF on my phone but I am having problems unlocking bootloader. I either got the errors: COMMAND ERROR!!! or it would be stuck on "Waiting for Device". I tried to also update my version 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 but that won't work either everytime I try to update with bootloader it keeps saying wrong zip. Can someone help me out unlock the bootloader and root my phone. I really wanna root my phone and get custom roms. Please help me out. Thank You.
So, its S-OFF and you need to unlock bootloader to install Clockworkmod recovery, correct? I did it with HTC Dev's site ( www htcdev com / bootloader )
Just followed the steps and I got my bootloader unlocked, then installed recovery and ran the root.zip file from there.

If its s-off already you don't have to worry about unlocking. Just fastboot flash a recovery.img

google is your friend. Google it. You are already unlocked. FIND THE CWM.img files in these threads. Even look around there might be a guide or 3 that'll help.

This is the last help I'm giving other then that Google will be your friend. Power down the phone. Hold volume - (down) and power. This will take you to your bootloader screen. Hit volume up or down and scroll to fastboot hit power button. FIND the cwm .img from one of those threads and flash that through adb on your computer using the command given in one of those links to Root threads. You phone is S off you already had root. That's all the help I'm willing to give.

S-off is unlocking the bootloader. Basicalky taking the normal security flags or checks that happen during boot process n dropping/overriding them.
