SD Card problem

So.... when i connect my Inc to my pc... autoplay opens both partitions of my card. But I notice that there is a hell of a lot more room on the portion I can't save to... how do I format my card so that for instance I can have more room for photos....

Are you certain you are viewing the SD card and not internal storage?
If SD is partitioned and you are running out of space in a partition, perhaps copy contents of SD to PC, then reformat SD to FAT32 and maybe repartition. fwiw, opinions vary on whether a partitioned SD adds appreciable benefit.

I have an 8gb card in my DInc.... when I use Root Explorer and go to sd card, it says I only have 876mb free.... and THAT is where I also find the photos from my camera, music and downloads.
When I plug it into the PC two drives show up, F and G, with F being the one above and G have 6.39gb available.... the folders in G are inaccessible on my phone and are:

Here's the F... where everything is being saved...
I need these to be swapped to take full advantage of my SD Card.... ya know? I never even partitioned it to begin with... it was just like this after I rooted a while ago.

My BAD.... it's a 2gb SD Card... wow... I am feeling dummmmmb. Anywho... now how do I make the internal storage the default place for things to save?

What type ROM are you using? Note that AOSP ROMs invoke and interact quite a bit with the SD card, beginning with powering on the device.
Before reformatting or repartitioning SD, make sure you have a nandroid backup of your currently working setup. Recommend copying that to your PC so you have it if something goes wrong.
Have you tried copying entire contents of SD to PC, then from the PC reformatting the SD to FAT32, which will wipe the card and partitions, and then you can copy the contents back onto the nonpartitioned space on the SD.

How can I default music/photos to the internal 6.48gb?

No worries! BEFORE you move stuff, make a backup!
Certain of the internal storage space is not accessible by users - that said, you may want to find the internal storage space emmc and store your music there. In the camera app, go to the settings and toggle where it stores things from SD to phone.
Perhaps drag/drop files from SD to internal storage that is accessible to you.
Regardless, highly recommend beginning a best practice of copying SD card contents to PC when the SD card fails. Same with internal stored photos, tunes, whatever.

just buy a bigger sdcard it will save you so much headache and agrivation in the future.

[Q] SGS2 - Dont understand the memory partitioning

I was playing with the SGS2 in the tmo store today and I just dont understand how they partitioned the internal memory.
This was a virgin phone, just powered up. Under manage apps, all, it showed 1.9gb free. Under SD card it showed 11 GB free. There was no SD card in the slot.
So it looks like they have partitioned the internal memory to create an 11 gb pseudo SD card.
Does this mean you can't use more than 1.9gb real internal memory without going to the pseudo SD card?
Do you have to install to SD (when allowed) to actually use up the rest of the program memory?
I'm assuming that when you actually can install to the SD card that its still going to place a large chunk of the app in the 1.9gb real internal memory like on previous phones? If this is true you would run out of the 1.9gb way before you could use up the 11gb pseudo sd card. This would prevent you from installing any more apps.
What happens to the 11gb on the pseudo SD card when you actually insert a real 32GB SD card? Does the real SD card show up as a second SD card?

There had to be a SD card on that phone. It wouldn't read 11gb with nothing in it. Try it on your phone. You take it out and your phone will notify you of no SD card since it will not read anything. Therefore you won't be able to see how much space is left on it.
Did you take the back cover off the phone at the store? I've never been able to do that since almost all stores have their devices locked.
You can put a greater memory capacity SD card on a phone as long as it is legit and will fit the SD Card slot. It will read it and tell you how much space is left on it.
I don't believe anything will be automatically moved to the SD card as soon as you insert it. It takes time to build up what the phone will automatically or manually write to the SD card. Most SD cards, that come pre-loaded with the phone, usually already have something on on the SD card. Brand new SD cards usually are about 98% empty. They will have small folders/files that are property of the SD card but are not even noticeable when seeing how much memory it took to hold those pre-loaded files/folders.
Hope this shed a little light on your questions. If you're not too sure about specs of that then it doesn't hurt to see what a representative would know about why it looks odd that way.

There was no SD card in the phone. The store rep removed the cover. Are you sure that the 16gb internal isnt partioned to have a pseudo sd card?

Its very possible that it was partitioned for that case but that is what seems odd to me. It wouldn't make sense to have internal memory, substituted partitioned internal memory acting as a SD card and a SD card slot.
Did you ask if that's just for the display phone or is it the same with for all SGS2s?

There is no physical SD card in the phone. This is the same partioning that Samsung used on the first Galaxy S phones. It partitions the internal memory to show an internal SD card.

So is that internal sd handled like a real sd card? If you install apps to it then it will also install part of the app to the 1.8gb real internal memory until all of the 1.8 is used and then your scre*ed?

Ok, I may have the answer to my question. I found this post in another forum:
The phone will install the APKs to the internal root memory which is 2GB in size. Then data files and additional app data downloaded goes into the internal SDcard memory which is 11GB in size.
The microSD card is listed as external_sd and you use it to store your photos & video (you can shoot direct to it), your music and movie files. These are files that take up a lot of space but you wouldn't use them all the time"
So I still have this question for anyone familiar:
Do all apps automatically load the apk's to the internal root memory and the data to the internal SD? Or do you have to explicitly tell the installer to install to the SD to prevent everything from installing to internal root memory?

Mine came partitioned as you wrote but I have not installed anything to it yet so can't answer your last question... what I hope is that it is treated like a total seperate drive I.e. don't erase that partition during flashing or full wipe, but gives you option of what partition to wipe or install to.

If the SGSII behaves the same as other Galaxy S phones then when you install an APP you just install it. Nothing special needed to point things around. There is no reason to install all apps to the External_SD or even the regular SD, youre just creating headaches for yourself. I have had over 524 apps installed on my captivate at one point and was still not out of space.

But just to be clear, it doesn't by default install the app data to the internal sd?

Mine has it as USB storage, not SD card.
I'm not sure how to check where the apps were installed.

In general it should install the app data where the app tells it to store the data. I know thats not very clear but different devs put data different places. I can remember early on angry birds and sims 2 put their data in a funky location and apps like TIBU wouldn't back them up so on a flash and restore you would loose game data.
I wouldnt worry about the partitioning its likely to work just fine. Install your apps and use the SDCARD for large data like photos and music and external_sd for more big files.

Failed to move apps into SD after flasing COW Rom

I successfully flashed COW rom on my galaxy w and i downloaded games from the market.. I tried moving the app to my sd card but it keeps saying failed to move application.. this isnt happening before.. please help. I tried using app2sd and link2sd.. but they didnt work..

If I am not wrong, COW's ROM has the internal/external swapping mod. That means whatever games/apps you installed are all in your external SD card. Hence, there is no need for you to "move" them as they have already in you SD card.

So its fine that all the apps i download goes to the device memory, which is only 857mb of space?

Is it being saved in the phone storage ?
Usually it is, and moving apps to the SD card would require a physical SD card. Because a swap would pretend the internal SD card storage to be the external SD card storage.
Don't want to confuse you but Samsung has its own way of partitioning the memory.
Default:
phone storage: 1,07GB
USB storage(internal SD card): 1,7GB
physical SD card(external SD card): up to 32GB
In default your apps should be stored in phone storage and if move your apps to SD card it will be moved to the USB storage(internal SD card) which is 1,7GB big.
If a swap is integrated in the firmware Your USB sotrage should be in the directory of the external SD card and your physical SD card should be in the directory of the internal SD card. So all the apps should be moved to the physical SD card.
If swapped:
phone storage: 1,07GB
physical SD card(internal SD card): up to 32GB
USB storage(external SD card): 1,7GB
maybe you will have to fix permission(honestly telling I don't know the effect of this, but it shouldn't harm your device ^^)

Thank you for the info.. I think you were right but you are still required to move applications to sd manually and mine suddenly worked after a series of formatting the sd card. my usb storage is 15gb.. very covenient.

This is simply not true, for default, stock, unmodified /etc/vold.fstab [no mnt-point swap]
Apps moved on default phone, as above, will move to External SD card, if present........
They go to "hidden" encrypted folder on SD card:
/mnt/sdcard/external_sd/.android_secure
This folder cannot be viewed on your device by any file manager, even rooted...
but can be seen by using Storage Analyser, free from Market/Play.......
see example of moved Apps from my rooted stock ROM, totally default, no swaps, etc

Thanks irishpancake, haven't heard about that before, but you are indeed right. I thought the memory of the internal sd card is being used if apps are being moved to SD.
It is really confusing if they write SD, because this doesn't say whether it is the internal sd or external sd.

it is indeed confusing, particularly when you have had a previous phone, which did not have this internal SD/USB Memory partition.
IMHO, Devs are going to have to address this with Apps, particularly those apps which have large on-device data, like Mapping and Games.....
ppl should contact the devs to point out that there should be an option to save data to your external SD card, which would address the need some have to make the mount-point "swap" mod in vold.fstab...
Just for ppl confused about the vold.fstab modification, here is a little tutorial, from eriksP.....he used to post in this forum, earlier on!!!

Was looking at my storage and just realized that something doesn't seem right. Is my micro sd called the "external sd" folder? It seems like the files in the external sd is on my phone memory??

Epic 4g Touch contains 16 gb of internal memory with the avalible expansion to a microsd card.
The folder /sdcard/ you see in any file manager is actually the internal memory and the folder /external_sd/ inside the /sdcard/ folder is your microsd...
Edit: Ok it isn't "really" 16 gb of internal storage.. The internal chip is a 16 gb storage chip but it also stores the data and system partitions (along with other phone related partitions) on that internal chip.. I believe you have somewhere around 12 gb of internal storage space that you can actually use...

Not sure if I confused you trying to explain it... Simple, short, sweet version
/sdcard/ = Internal memory = USB Storage
/sdcard/external_sd/ = Micro SD
If you want to free up storage space on the phone.. you need to move files from /sdcard/ to /sdcard/external_sd/

Those were my initial thoughts, but when checking the storage, it says there is approximately 8GBs of "miscellaneous" files. After clicking into the miscellaneous files, it said approx. 4GB is on the external SD. If it's on the external SD, why would it show up as miscellaneous file under internal phone memory?

Go into System Settings and Storage.. It should tell you device memory, USB Storage and SD Card... Are you on a TW rom or CM9?

Extra SD Card ends up not freeing any internal space at all, help :S

Hi Everyone,
the internal storage of my phone was constantly running full. Since new photos, videos, etc. were added over time. And I always had to delete old stuff to free up space otherwise apps like WhatsApp would stop working due to insufficient free space. So today I bought a new SanDisk Ultra microSDXC Card (128GB A1), put it into the Phone, and went through the wizard which appeared after the installation.
But after the Installation, the internal Storage is still full, and the SD Card is now magically 93GB used, while the phone itself has only 64 GB?
Here are the steps I did:
1. This message appeared after the installation:

2. then i was asked how i want to use the SD Card, i've selected *Use for extra phone storage*
3. I was then asked if i want to format the SD Card, which i replied with *Format SD Card"
4. I was then told the data will be moved in about 1 hour. I selected *Move Content*
5. After 1 hour the message appears "Your SD Card is ready to use" BUT, it still showed the icon in the header that the disc is still full?
After restarting the Phone to rule out any kind of hick-up, the internal Storage is STILL full and the SD Card is now apparently used up to 92.32GB while the original Internal Storage is only 64GB Big ?!?
My assumption was. That the Internal Shared Storage will be extended by the SD Card, but it seems it didn't. Instead nothing changed except that now i do not know where my pictures are and how to proceed further from this point now.
So what are my options now? I do not want to lose any pictures or videos.

Some addition. If i open the SD Card via "Settings > Storage > SanDisk SD Card", this is being shown:
But if I select "Apps" (which is weird why it even is 88GB big x_X) it shows no apps ?!?
Also the Folder "Others" is stated as MINUS 41GB ?!?

If i open the Internal Storage again via "Settings > Storage > Internal Storage", it shows this:
Notice the "Photos & Videos" folder is 43GB Big, while the one in the SD Card is 18+22GB ~=42 GB. Apparently the Files are duplicated?

The only option i see right now is to "Format (the SanDisk SD Card) as portable"
But i am afraid i will lose all my Pictures & Videos since they were moved to it.

Does anyone has a tipp?

The Thread can be closed.
The Solution: I had to go to someone to back up all of my Pictures and Movies onto their PC. Afterward, the SD Card could be formatted into a portable one and the files were moved back from the PC to the SD Card.
