[Q] Rooting with USB Issues - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have and evo 4g that is currently on 2.3.5 that has an issue with the USB "USB device not recognized" every time it is plugged into on computer, I have tried everything I have found to try and fix it. The main usb fix I found says I must be rooted first, which unfortunately I am not. I had read that a forum that said if I ran a PC36IMG.zip update on the phone that could root it, but I could not find one that would work on my phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have also tried the gingerbreak app with no luck. I have tried two different computers one pc, one mac, and have tried two different usb cables.
Is there a way for me to root at all with this issue, so I can try the usb fix?
Thanks in advance for the help...

First off you need to install htc sync driver... http://narod.ru/disk/38137915001/HTCDriver3.0.0.018.exe.html ,then go here to unlock your bootloader.... http://htcdev.com/ ,after you unlock the bootloader,go here... http://revolutionary.io/ ,make sure you follow all of the directions carefully and before you install any custom roms, make sure you backup your stock rom,its very important to nandroid first in case something goes wrong.

Sorry I didnt post I have tried installing sync and install the drivers by them self with no luck. I also read with mac you do not have to have drivers. I have even tried to manually install them with no luck, it continuously comes up under the USB section in device manager and if I try to update the driver it says that the device is already up to date.
Thanks

Hopefully you can use tacoroot method and root it.
Use android terminal emulator instead of adb which needs a usb link.
I can't post links yet sooo, google this:
androidforums rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide
The first result should get you to the thread.
I would try and fix the usb port though. It makes things easier.
Try using a toothpick or sewing needle and try to clean out the port as best as you can. Mind the pins though, do NOT bend them.
I've done that before, couldn't find a way to bend it back. Had to solder in a whole new connector.

USB detection when connected to computer not working!(*POSSIBLY FIXED*)

- I think I found a fix and it was quite easy to be honest. All I did was reinstall HTC SYNC and my computer is recognizing my phone now. Only thing is, i'm pretty sure if you want to use adb you had to uninstall this.
- Another solution is to update the RADIO on your phone to the newest version. (CREDIT GOES TO HAZAKINS FOR FINDING THIS)
I successfully rooted 2.2 today with the new guide. The first rom I flashed was RevE and noticed that when I plugged in my usb, to my computer, the notification bar would show up with the option of mounting or charging and then disappear after a second. Not only that, the phone didn't charge at all while connected and the notification bar was clear and didn't tell me whether I was charging only, ect even though it usually does.
The only way I am able to access my SD card is strictly through recovery now by mounting the usb. Other than that, there is no other way for me to access my SD card. Let me be clear that YES I have tried more than one USB port and usb cable but still there has been no luck. Let me also add that it was working fine before rooting.
Also, I just flashed to CM R2 successfully and the same issue still exists. I'm not really sure what else to do.
One interesting thing, if this means anything, that I found, was that I saw the My HTC drivers in device manager only when I accessed my SD card through recovery, it never appeared when I tried to connect my phone to my computer outside of recovery.
So, I'm not really sure what else to do. I have rebooted both my phone and my computer and I am really leaning towards the fact that it may have to do with the My HTC drivers. The thing is though, add or remove programs doesn't show My HTC when my phone is connected to the homescreen. But, I did manage to uninstall it while in recovery mode and as soon as I went back to the homescreen the driver installed so fast that I couldn't stop it from installing.
So, I have no idea what to do
I just confirmed that I am not the only one with this issue in IRC. We both narrowed it down to the driver being the issue. I'm not sure how exactly I can delete it though because it only shows up for an instant and then disappears. It isn't even in add or remove programs.
When you connect your phone, try toggling the USB Debugging off and then back on. I had similar problem (not exactly the same) and this is what worked for me.

I actually had this exact same problem... all the way up until I tried a different usb port... so I guess I got lucky.
But the one port was working fine up until I put the new ROM on it. Then it stopped working. Then I had to use a different port. I was able to do that... But now after phone reboot and PC reboot, 1st usb port works fine.
I hope it starts working for you.
I did same thing having same problem, I even downloaded another rom with rom manager and installed it, still same problem. When I plug in my USB cord it will pop up for a second on the phone to ask my charge or drive the goes away before i can do anything.

OK Here is the fix, buy a mini sdcard reader copy the pc36img file to your sdcard using this reader, install back in phone boot into recovery and let it update, then startover root process, this worked for me, I haven't update to 2.2 yet, but I got usb back

My fix was to get rid of the extension USB cable extender I was using. Apparently the signal degrades too much across it. I tried 3 different extender cables too.

I did that, twice, and the same issue is occurring.
Also having the same problem after the 2.2 down grade.
Same problem
I can't mount my SDcard either. I followed the new video tutorial to get root on phones that came with 2.2. I think something went wrong when i got that out of memory write error. I have tried two different computers and all their usb spots. I have not been able to mount sd card yet. It does charge however. Any ideas as what to do?? Oddly enough i was able to get Amon-ra recovery flashed so doesn't that mean i have full root??
Seems like a good amount of people are having this issue. If someone comes across a fix please share!!!
Try uninstalling My HTC and HTC Installer Drivers (I forgot the exact name) and then reinstalling HTC SYNC.
Got mine to work
on some other forum someone tried flashing the radios to the newest version and fixed the problem. I tried this as well and came back here to let you guys know that it worked for me also.
here is a link to the radio files.

Easy fix: Uninstall the HTC software, then reinstall it.
This should reinstall the driver for your EVO.

[Q] G2 not being seen by PC

Hey guys,
I tried getting some help for this over at the Nook Color threads because it all started *after* i rooted my NC, but no one's been able to explain to me what Ive done wrong or whats happened...
So here's the sitch.
o I have ADB installed, but it only activates in device manager when the nook is plugged in, not the G2
o When the NC get usb'd to the PC, it fully registers and gives me access to the SD card on it
o .... where as the G2 just sits there and says "yay im getting power!"
o ,,,, BUT if i plug it into a HUB rather than directly into a usb port on the mobo or front, the PC (win7 x64 ult) seems to see it but doesnt know how to properly assign a driver to it and gives it UNKNOWN
o also i checked the usb-adb ini file, and it lists all my other devices in the hardware cues BUT the G2, which means it hasnt properly registered since then or never had a proper profile to begin with in the PC. It even has my older mt3G listed which I havent plugged in since all this started.
Ive tried multiple driver types, but literately, NOTHING has worked. Its like the G2 isnt even properly registering in the computer when connected. I tried a factory reset, but still no luck. Is there anything beyond a soft fact reset for an unrooted phone? I mean, i need COLD AS STONE back to day 1 reset.
Please help, I really want to root this :'<
and no, the only way now to access my sd card is to turn the thing off and use a reader. Like i said, it literately is NOT seeing it :<
Wrong section. Ask in the Q&A, not the DEV section.
Try installing HTC Sync, even though it doesnt work with the G2 because its sense based, it will install the proper drivers for you. This worked for me.
Heres the link:
http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=1058&news_id=804
Another method would be install pdanet on you phone fron the Market, then install pdanet for your computer from here and it should install the drivers when you plug your phone in with pdanet app running:
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
I tried the Sense link, but I couldnt find the download option for it.... anyways, heres a more precise description of the issue
When I go and install PDA Net, it loads up the drivers, but the computer literately is not even registering that a DEVICE has been plugged in via USB. I dont even get the USB connect prompt on the phone!
That's what Im saying, something is up. I need to take the cable with me and try this on another computer now that I think about it to rule out that something isnt damaged on the phone...
What ROM are you using? Gingerbread ROM's act like the (for now), at least from what I understand. I tried CM7 and sure enough - it acted just like what you're describing.

But thats the whole thing, im not using a ROM, its just the stock OS build. if i was using a ROM, id have tried removing it and reloading it, but this is on a phone that isnt even rooted yet... actually... should I try going temp root again and see if that fixes anything?
Whats the best way to do that now since I keep reading Vision got pulled away because it was damaging phones or something?
Okay, so i tried plugging it into a diff computer.... same result... so whatever it is, its the phone.
Any ideas XDA pplz?
Has it seen the g2 before? if so, get usbdeview, find the drivers in there that would be used for the g2, delete those. Snag PDANet and download that, plug the phone back in and see what ya get. You will get the pop ups again about the new software being loaded since it will have to find and reload drivers for the phone and PDANet will have the drivers you need.

Like the guy above me said, DL or re-DL the drivers (though none should be needed if you're using it as a storage drive, the comp sees it as a usb drive). Is it charging your phone when you plug it in? It's rare, but the USB cable may be bad.
The only other thing I can think of is that something went wrong and the phone isn't releasing the mount to the sdcard, in which case you should try rooting and using a different ROM or a stock rom and it should help.
Well thats the whole thing, the computer doesnt even see the USB part of it. Thats been my whole issue. The computer doesnt see the phone or the usb drive part. It straight does not see the phone at *all*! Doesnt even show up in Dev Manager, but yet it gets power. I even went and got a new micro USB cable, fresh, and still nothing.
im getting to 86 the os and reload Win7, im like super uber pissed over all this because i cant figure it out. I dont even know whats wrong >_<!
Just for kicks (because I had this exact thing happen to another phone of mine - the slide) you're rooted, which means you have clockwork right?
Reboot into recovery and go to the 'mounts' part and select 'mount usb'. Do that with it plugged into your computer and let me know if the phone shows up then. That's the only way I could put it in mass storage mode. I flashed something other than cyanogen's rom and BAM, it worked like it was supposed to (Linux did mount cyanogen though - weird).
If you want to go back to 0 day with your G2, search 'PC10img' and download it. DO NOT FLASH IT YET, you could really screw up your phone since you have s-off. Go to the wiki and scroll to the bottom, it tells you how to get s-on. Once you can verify that you have s-on, proceed to flashing the pc10img.
Wiki
Okay, so, Im way better now. Apparently I managed to get s-off and root ability via
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837315
when i reloaded and got rooting ability, somehow, I now have a detectable sd card again.
I dont know how, I dont know why, I just know that Im going to throw CM6.1.1 onto this thing and be rocking it hard
Thanks again for all your help guys, it was awesome to know XDA really helps out its followers
EDIT:
Okay... so now Im mixed. I have a rooted phone, with CM6.1.1, but still doesnt properly recognize when plugged into the PC.
oh well, I already called TMobile and their sending me a new phone under warranty. Its gotta just be a busted port in some way for detection. I dunno. >_<
But still, thanks a lot guys. Means a lot

[Q] gingerbreak root problem

I've been trying to root my epic 2.2 with gingerbreak and it doesn't work. I've done It before and now it says "Not sure what happened.exploit failed or reboot failed. Reboot manually and see if you have Superuser" I did everything right
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.

The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

[HELP!] Downgrade does NOT work after hours of trying

My DHD recently crashed and I had to send it in to replace my mainboard. So i got it back and there was the original FW on it. This one had the number 2.36.x. I tried to get temp root for a while, but nothing would work.
So I updated my phone to 2.50.163.3. Not working here either.
So I took my Goldcard and updated my phone to the unbranded FW 2.50.402.2.
My problem is that GingerBreak isn't working at all (the apk isn't and also the pure executable) and fre3vo does NOT find any address where it could exploit. I already checked so many addresses here...
I tried this with all FW's and it never worked!
But I need root access so my Titanium backup works....
PLEASE help me guys!!
Edit: I also tried Ace Advanced Hack Kit, didn't work either...

I boot it, enable USB debugging and get it into "Load battery only" mode. Then I start AAHK as Administrator (tried it with ubuntu and win 7) and press 1.
After that fre3vo is scanning possible exploit addresses and finds nothing, so everything else fails...
Before use Hac Kit
Prerequisites
Windows - a good, clean environment is critical
Make sure HTC USB Drivers for Android are installed (included in the Hack Kit @ tools/windrivers)
Disable all malware detection, including Windows Defender
Uninstall HTC Sync
Uninstall Droid Explorer
Uninstall iTunes or stop service
Uninstall ALL other phone pda or tablet software
Disable all unnecessary tasks and services. Google how to do this as ADMIN.
The hack kit runs flawlessly in under 6 minutes time on a clean PC env with drivers properly installed.
The command MUST be started as Administrator
I double click hack-ace.cmd but its really not work.
Its show Your PC Windows ENV is damaged...........
But I try to double click hack-ack-xph.cmd Its work and connect to hack
Only 5-6 minute done !

This is very strange. Have you got another computer to try with? Try using different USB ports. If you have a desktop computer use the ports at the back because they are connected directly to the motherboard. The front ones are connected by cable to the motherboard.

So I have the Tmobile variant of the S3 and I have tried everything and spent countless hours trying to fix my problem. My phone will not connect to my computer after I tried with different cables and going through the phone utilities. I also did what other forums said and I had no luck. The binary count is at 10 because I tried to root this phone long time ago and I was unsuccessful. The device is not rooted because I checked if I had root access. The phone will only charge when I connect it to the computer and I need it to update to the stock 4.3 from Tmobile using odin. Any help??

Are you using cables bought with chargers? Or are you using quality "Data Cables"? Also, try different USB ports on the computer. Uninstall and reinstall drivers from Device Manager. If it will charge, but not transfer data, it sounds to me that its either a cable issue, or a driver issue. (Could be a bad port on the phone as well, but this is less likely)

Yeah I tried all of that and I still had no luck
If you are stock, unrooted, can't you just use the software update in settings > about device?
When connected to the computer, what does it say in device manager?
Can you try on a different computer? If it also does not work on another computer, it may be more likely that there is a problem with the port on your phone.

I would try downloading the drivers from the Samsung website. It doesn't really sound like it would be a problem with the phone. Also try switching between MTP and PTP and waiting a couple of minutes in between to see if the computer installs the phone correctly.
You can get drivers from my Sig if you want to try several different versions. Just make sure you uninstall through device manager.
Hi
I recommend you try re installing your cell phones drivers on your computer or flashing your ROM correctly. Try updating the device manually.

Can you try on a different computer? If it also does not work on another computer, it may be more likely that there is a problem with the port on your phone.

I tried to do all that with the drivers but the phone will not connect regardless.
Sounds like its either cables or usb ports then. See if you cant get a hold of an actual data cable, preferably a samsung replacement. Then try that on every usb port on the computer.
And for the drivers, are you uninstalling them through device manager before trying a different version? In my driver repo at least try the oldest and the 2nd and 3rd from the newest if you haven't already.
If none of the above works you may need to consider either reformatting and reinstalling Windows, or try to do this on a friend ir family members computer.
