[Q] [HELP ME] restore formatted sdcard partition - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

There might already be an answer for my question, but unfortunately i could not find anything...
i made a biiiig mistake some minutes ago. i wanted to install a new rom on my phone, so i did a factory reset and wanted to format /system. unfortunately i chose to format /sdcard instead! i recognized it, when cwm wrote "formatting /sdcard", not a second before, when i had to confirm my choice. ((
i did not make a backup of internal storeage before, so all my data (including the photos from my kids!!!) got lost. i immediately pulled out the battery, to maybe have a chance to get my data back. if needed, i could still boot into android, because i did not wipe /system like i wanted to...
is there a way to get my data back (at least the photos)??? PLEASE HELP!!!

If you have root, try this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=fahrbot.apps.undelete&hl=en
Edit: cancel that. Only FAT is supported.

no there is not.
all data recovery options require the partition to be mounted. since there is no sdcard, you cannot mount it.

[Q] (Q) Please Help me HTC Desire keeps rebooting 10-15 seconds on turning on

Hey all XDA members
Im sorry to ask any of you this but please help me !!
I had no problems rooting my phone with unrevoked and just left it at that but knowing me i downloaded a app on android market place called... ROM MANAGER - clockworkmod or whatever .. it seemed ok i went to backup my phone to my sd card and it said i had 897mb of storage left ... so i thought great ill back it up now so i wont brick my phone and if i ever did i could back up it said it finished succesfully or what not turns off my phone then every time it boots i get telstra next G boot logo then after abit it re F$#cking starts.. excuse my french i can access recovery menu and even clockworksmod recovery tryed formating the cache and everything
ATM im paying for a brick per month and it just seems so easy to fix but im obviously mistaken .. I really dont know what to do i wanna send it to htc but dont know how they would respond if they found clockworkmod in the recovery menu I dont even care if i have to pay them just so i can get my desire back ...
FAQS that ive learnt about this issue so far
#1 it makes a bootloop because i didnt have enough storage on my sd card so im puting the blame atm with the guys at clockmod for not giving users a clear warning that if you dont have enough memorey it will cause a boot loop ... and they make you pay for the app ... go figure >.>
There is no one to blame but you, you should know what you are doing with a rooted phone. Also your paying argument is stupid, who pays for a app you don't know before trying the free alternative?
Now to your problem:
Pull the battery.
Hold VolDown+POWER.
Go to recovery.
Go to backup and restore.
Restore.
Find the file of your backup. (either a data and time or a name you gave)
Click it.
Wait till it's done.
Reboot system now.
In recovery use the trackpad to navigate and confirm and in hboot, i think, volume up and down to navigate and power to confirm.
If there is no backup file at step 6, wipe dalvik cache under advanced (also in recovery), reboot and see if that fixed it. If not do a full wipe in recovery, data/factory reset, cache and dalvik cache under advanced. Keep in mind this will wipe everything of your phone. Sd card is not affected.
Thanks for the reply first off i know its my fault i program computers for a living and find it quite frustrating when i cant get a linux based phone to boot..
also to recovering the backup in clocksworkmod ... it didnt work, but it is probably corrupted from not being able to do a full backup of my phone.... if you or anyone else here who has a back on a htc desire please feel free to send me it
also to factory restore, formating cache still a no go im starting to lose hope already the phone hardware sense it fine its just the operating system thats bonkers
and finally i can understand you defending clocksmod and they have done a very good job but maybe next time they should warn us about this big bug thats in the backup process because this little piece of software has proberly bricked my phone from a tiny bug in the software
Well almost 900Mb is enough to back up your entire phone, unless you have a massif ext partition. So I doubt that is the problem but whatever.
If both the above steps didn't work (and you also clear dalvik cache) I suggest you just install a custom rom. If you don't know what you want or where to start, I suggest you start with Leedroid. If you have a ext partition on your sd card use the A2SD version, if you don't use NoA2SD version.
To install:
Download the rom.
Boot in to recovery.
Connect the phone to the pc.
Go to mounts and mount the sd as mass storage (or whatever it's called, should be the last option in the list if I remember correct)
Copy the rom to the sd. (not in any folder, just on the sd card)
Safely remove and unmount again.
Wipe data/factory rest, cache and dalvik again just to be sure.
Go to install zip form sd.
Chose zip form sd
Find the zip you just transferred and flash it.
Wait till it's done.
Reboot system. (this can take up to 10 minutes)
This should give you a booting phone again.

[Q] Internal memory even worse after reflashing

So I posted this question and I did not get a helpful reply so I am trying again because the problem is even worse.
Basically, I rooted with unrEVOked over a year ago and I have flashed several ROMs, always doing a factory reset andwiping the dalvik cache with Clockworkmod.
I tried Leedroid, AuTrax, Ginervillain, Cyanogen then Oxygen. Perhaps another. When using Cyanogen I noticed I had very little internal memory (about 19Mb) even though all apps were on the SD card. I switched to Oxygen and nothing changed.
NOW I have done a factory reset, wiped dalvik, and reflashed Oxygen and I only have about 800Kb of internal memory.
I thought a factory reset would make my phone go back to pristine condition (albeit rooted) and I could start over from the beginning if I'd totally mucked something up and bricked or crippled it--but wipingand relashing has just made the problem worse!
Is there any solution here?
Youre doing the factory reset via recovery?
If thats not working, try formatting /data via recovery
S-off then change your hboot?!
Are you 100% sure apps2sd is working properly?
use a custom mtd or use one of the hboots at alpharev.nl
Yeah if you want more space you can always S-OFF and then flash a different SPL (hboot).
Also before you flash a new ROM remember to go to mounts and storage and format boot, data, system, cache.

Yes, I'm doing "wipe data/factory reset" from the green ClockworkMod menu. And "Wipe Dalvik Cache" from the "Advanced" menu beneath that.
Can you tell me in fairly simple terms what formatting /data is likely to accomplish? I'm up for it if there's a logical reason, certainly. But since every wipe&reflash chews up the little remaining memory I don't want to just be trying every option in the menu until SOMETHING works because at the rate it is losing internal memory I only have 1-2 more wipe-reflashes until it's a brick.

OK, I'll try this (formatting boot, data, system, cache) but is there a simple explanation for why this is necessary and will fix the problem? I was pretty sure every rooting-flashing guide I'd read said only data wipe/factory reset (and sometimes dalvik cache) was necessary.
An explanation suitable for a noob like me, but a little more detailed than "it's a deeper, better wipe"
Thanks!!!
if you don't do it, sometimes it's possible that some of the data and crap from the past ROM gets left over and just uses space.

U get only 800 kb after reflash only the rom or even after restoring ur apps?
(maybe a stupid question, but i always prefer to make clarify everything)

Yes. I did a factory reset, wiped the dalvik cache, flashed Oxygen and had 800kb of internal memory before doing anything else (and a barely functioning phone that couldn't even receive a text message but would sendone).

OK, that's what I figured it would do (and what I figured the problem was, since memory decreased with succesive flashes). So format data, boot, system, and cache but NOT sd-ext (I don't think there's a format /boot option).
In any particular order? And before or after "wipe data/factory reset"?
doesn't matter in what ordered. you only format sd-ext if you have an EXXT3/4 on your sd-card

This is a really simple explanation, which means that it will not be technically accurate, but will give you an idea.
When you delete a file, its not really deleted. It is there until something else overwrites it.
What actually happens is the reference to that file is removed from the File system (be that EXT, FAT, NTFS etc etc). The File system is basically table, or even an address book. The operating system uses this table to locate files that are there (when you request the file is opened etc). But also to locate spaces where new files can be written to.
When the next file is written, it will find a place via the file system that is empty and write to the location. This is usually when a past file is overwritten, although not neccessarily by the next new file.
Even when you do a factory reset, this is still the case. The files are still there, but the file system's "table" is cleared, making it appear empty, therefore able to accept new files.
It could be there is a corruption or failure of the file system where these entries are not properly being removed.
A format also will not delete these files. This is how anyone with a little bit of knowledge can recover some or all of your data after you format your Hard drive, SD card etc etc. What it will do though, is format the drive with a new file system, which will be clean and hopefully free of corruption.
Of course, the cause may be something else but it always a good idea to rule it out.
Thank you very much bortak and rootSU. I surmised generally that the problem was repeated flashing leaving debris and knew there had to be some solution to clean it up instead of going beyond simple root-and-flash. I very much wanted to fix it in one go instead of having another failed attempt and even less memory to work with for a fix. And thank you very much for taking the time for that explanation--I am now a little wiser and it let me know this wasn't an ill-informed "hail mary pass".
For anyone who finds this searching in the future, I formatted boot, system, data and cache and then did a factory reset. Rebooting got me stuck on the bootloader screen. I went back into recovery and flashed Oxygen. Now I have a working Desire with Oxygen and 109MB free on the internal memory.

[Q] Error when formatting /data...

My phone was working fine until I upgraded two apps (I can't recall which ones) and my phone rebooted on its own; weird. I am running CM7 BTW.
I figured "No problem, I'll just flash my backup through Clockworkmod; not so. I keep getting "error formatting /data" regardless of any wipe, format I do.
I am not sure what to do from here. Please help. Searching revealed some RUU advice, but those were in other phone forums and I want to make sure I don't screw this up.

What version of cwm are you using?
Sent From My Optimized HTC Incredibly Dinc
It was the orange, but I upgraded it to see if it would work. uh, oh, as I write this, I fear worse...
Upgrading changed cwm to blue, but still same problems. It is almost as if the data directory has no write permissions.
I got impatient and used the ruu.exe from pvillecomp and now it gets stuck at the red eye droid screen and is on a reboot loop.
I can't get into recovery now, I get the phone icon with the red ! triangle. I figure cwm is gone now, so what, use unrevoked again? This would flash a new recovery, correct? Otherwise, how would I get the zip file onto the sd card now to flash via hboot? Even with a cwm, I imagine I will have the same formatting issues, unless the rom upate utility corrected those.

Try manually mounting /data before wiping it.
EDIT: Nevermind just read your other post about loosing cw recovery. Are you still s-off?
yeah, I tried every combination of mounting and formatting and it always failed with the same message. I am still S-off, so I imagine from here I can use unrevoked to flash cwm back onto it then I can try to restore from a saved ROM I have on my card. Should I do that?
I could copy the file to flash cwm file to my card instead I guess, but my card would have to be FAT32 I assume.
Well I flashed ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0 using HBOOT and now I am back to my original problem: Error while formatting /data! I can mount /data, but not format it, even through the mount menu option. Any ideas?
I don't know much about the file structure but does this not seem like a permissions issue to you guys? Fix permissions in CWM and factory resets don't help either.

By partition, do mean directories? I formatted the card to FAT32 but did not partition it in any way. I don't believe I had separate partitions on it before, but I could be wrong. Wouldn't the partitions have shown up in my Windows OS when I plugged the card in to the reader?

factory reset in hboot is different. It will probably wipe programming so you'll have to *228 1 and *228 2 to yet reprogram your phone. It'll probably wipe sdcard and emmc too. I've not tried so this is at your own risk. see if there are better options first.

No windows would not see it if its there you would need to use a program called "gparted" on your pc to get rid of it or reformat it. Also when you tried the factory reset from hboot were you on a stock recovery then or cwm?

I tried the Factory Reset from HBOOT and also the Wipe Data/Factory Reset from CWM. Occasionally I am getting the 5 vibrations and a black screen when trying to turn off and on; battery pull allows me to boot up into ROM or HBOOT.
CM7 is working now, but the hard button bindings are screwed up along with a bunch of other stuff. CWM is able to restore the system, but fails on data so it makes sense. I can't receive calls either. I was so hoping the ruu would have fixed this...
The card should have no bearing on flashing a ROM? Or am I not understanding this?
Oh, I also tried to restore and format data manually without the card in to no avail. The Wipe Data/Factory Reset formats the data folder without errors but not the manually method of formatting or the restore method.
Could this help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18287267
Just tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1006556
Still same error.
To return my phone under warranty to a Verizon store, do I need to make sure that the stock ROM is flashed and the phone is unrooted with S-ON again? I am starting to think this is the route I am heading down and I only have a week left on my warranty.
Very short answer.........YES!!!

*Possible Solution* If still an issue
If it is still an issue I had the same problem with my incredible.
I was playing a racing game on my phone and it just restarted on its own. When I turned it back on the phone had reset itself. Every time I would restart the phone from then on it would delete every thing I had saved like it was doing a factory reset. So I tried to do a wipe and restore and no luck. I kept getting the same errors you were getting in clockwork. I also tried the e2fsck commands from the link in the prior post and no luck.
1. I got a working HTC Incredible and booted into recovery and mounted all partitions.(/system, /data, etc.)
2. Then I used adb to pull the filesystem from the working phone with this command.
c:\android\adb pull / filesystem
This puts all the files from the phones root folder into a folder named filesystem in the same directory as the adb files.
3. After that finished I hooked the phone with the messed up partitions to the computer, booted into recovery, and mounted all partitions.
4. Then I used adb to push the filesystem from the working Incredible to the Incredible with the messed up partitions with this command.
c:\android\adb push c:\android\filesystem /
5. When it finished I rebooted the phone. It booted up and I got a few force close errors but nothing major, so I restarted and booted into recovery. When I tried to format /data it formatted like it should have.
6. Finally I downloaded the stock+ rooted rom and flashed it with clockwork and the phone booted up fine with no force closes and doesn't reset after reboot.
This worked for me and should work for anyone else that has this filesystem problem.
Can i get those files?
i dont have a working incredible. can you post a link to the working filesystem.
Thanks.

Here try this one http://dinc.does-it.net/Touch_of_Blue/filesystem.zip, im interested to see if this works for you too. It seems quite a few people have been having issues with /data latley.
I get error
Code:

failed to copy 'filesystem/sys/devices/platform/android_pmem.0/power/wakeup' to '/sys/devices/platform/android_pmem.0/power/wakeup': Operation not permitted
i get this error trying to push the filesystem. any workaround?

[Q] Unable to find files internal storage?

Hello Again, I have found a few threads with the same issue but something in the middle is different, this has happened on my Nexus 5 before, and it pissed me off because i never got it resolved.
I want to convert my HTC One M8 ATT to GPE later today, but first i'm on sense with NvROM.
The ROM isn't the issue since it's been working fine for a 2 weeks now, here is the story.
What i did-
Recovery (Wanted to try out CarbonROM)
Flashed LiquidSmooths kernel ontop of Carbon, got "Unfortunately phone has stopped".
Went to recovery again to attempt to flash liquidsmooth only.
E: Unable to mount /data
E: Unable to mount /system
E: Unable to mount /cache
E: Unable to mount /sdcard
E: Wiping /data /system /cache failed!
Now, i rebooted and those errors are non existent i can flash again.
But on LiquidSmooth , The Gallery can not find my Pictures.
The Music app can not find the music anymore.
Whenever i use a File Manager , magically my files are still there.
Anybody got ideas on this one? Thanks.
>Pics related<
Try to connect the phone to a PC, and use Device Manager to format the internal memory. Backup any personal data first, if needed (and if possible).
I've heard that , that causes the eMMc or internal storage to go into Read Only mode?
anyone correct me when i`m totally wrong here.
hasn't this something to do with the so called fused location of your sd-card ?
On my phone the locations of the sdcard is shown different then when i locate them trough recovery or shell.
In android the location is something like: /root/storage/sdcard (internal memory)
the real location in my case was shown in recovery as: /root/storage/emulated/0/
And i think because i had previously installed a cm11 based rom and kernel.
And when i completely wiped my phone for a newly rom, afterwards i still had all my data on my phone, because it didn't wipe the /emulated/0 location.
so all the files are still found with a file manager because the two location i mentioned before are fused. But your apps still has the old location in his settings somewhere..
You can try to do a media rescan so your phone search for new media.... But i believe that is also done when you reboot your phone.
I had that happen to me and I was able to fix it by using the "Format" option in TWRP recovery. That, of course, wipes everything on the device but everything will be mounted correctly and properly again.
Guys, I ended up fixing it.
TWRP format fixes it but i needed a backup. Also first attempt at formatting it on TWRP had issues. E:Can't format , E: Data isn't mounted.
Ended up just going ahead and doing the Google Play Edition Conversion and that fixed the whole issue, Thanks for your time!

so wait, aren't you going to tell us what you mean by it fixed the whole issue? were you able to back up the data first?
I'm having a slightly different (maybe similar) issue.. my at&T m8 was working fine on insertcoin (previously viper/venom) and i decided to try a very stock AT&T debloated rom.
forgot to flash the firmware first, so booted into fastboot, and was going to do that.. but it wouldn't work, gave me an error..
booted back into recovery (TWRP 2.7.0.2) and my internal storage WILL NOT MOUNT. hence, nothing works... I can see microSD files, I can attempt to flash things ,but, due to the internal "sd" (not my microsd, just using old fashioned android terminology) not mounting, every operation fails. interestingly, I can mount / (root partition) and it has the correct structure, and even some vestiges of my files.. when i say mount, i mean in recovery on the device.. not on a computer via USB.
any ideas? i'm stuck
I know i can probably format the /media/data blahblah partition (the internal storage) but I have very important photographs of my best friend's wedding and my children's recent visit to their grandparents'.. so i really really want to restore those files.. I do this kind of thing (file forensics) on OSX, windows, and some linux drives, all the time at work.. I just don't know how to access the storage on an android phone, in order to run the forensics scans etc.
thanks!!

forgot to flash the firmware first, so booted into fastboot, and was going to do that.. but it wouldn't work, gave me an error..
booted back into recovery (TWRP 2.7.0.2) and my internal storage WILL NOT MOUNT. hence, nothing works...
I just don't know how to access the storage on an android phone, in order to run the forensics scans etc.
thanks!!

Sorry, but what i did was different, and MIGHT factory reset your internal storage, i can't verify 100%.
You can do two things,
Either flash the RUU
for 4.4.3 STOCK HTC [ATT]
or Flash Google Play edition RUU and revert back to sense which will fix it too.

Lost internal storage after dirty flash of ROM update

I think I have just screwed up big time.
Here is what happened:
Had CrDroid 8 installed (Android 12) with encrypted storage
Wanted to upgrade to next version; following the guide, simply did a wipe (without any advanced options) in TWRP and then installed the zip
Realized after rebooting that the phone has been completely reset and internal storage shows as empty
I know that this is related to a problem with decryption by TWRP with A12.
My question is, is there any chance that I would be able to recover my lost files? I mean where did they go? What could have happened? Did TWRP just not understand the encrypted data so it threw it away and recreated it, overwriting these files?
Is there any chance that the previous data partition (my internal storage, all my photos, etc) are still somewhere to be found within the storage and I could locate this partition and decrypt it using my passphrase? I am desperate at this point. I am stupid and did not make backups. I thought this would be a regular upgrade, wipe, install ZIP, like I've done dozens of times... Couldn't I perhaps scan the raw disk devices for some magic string or anything that would mark the start of the encrypted partition?
Sorry about the frantic writing, I am devastated and literally begging for any kind of help with this. Thank you.
Sorry for the noise, I was desperate I gave up since then, I just don't think this is possible. As far as I understand the encrpytion keys have been flushed (which are kept in the TEE anyway?). I still don't fully understand why TWRP just decides to wipe /data/media as well as /data in this case, but what is done is done. Back up your data guys. Same old story.
