I picked up a brand new S3 yesterday. While battery life has been okay before, I was wondering if this is normal. Every other android phone I have had, the screen took up the most battery. On the S3, the cell standby has uses the most... by a lot. Thanks in advance!

Hi!
I don't know if you searched the forums or not before posting but there are a ton of threads about this.
It is a VERY common bug for the S3 with this 'Cell Standby' taking most of the battery life even when you are in full signal range. I read somewhere that Samsung made a mistake when programming the phones that Cell Standby takes 34mA instead of 3.4mA. Not sure how true this is, but there is a fix available but does require root.
After trying Jelly Bean leaked versions for a bit, I noticed that this bug seems to have fixed.
Another thing you might want to try, is DISABLE LTE! It takes a ton of power even when not in use! Use HSPA or GSM instead depending on your carrier!
Other than that, enjoying your phone so far?
Michael
I was trying to rush to work when I made the thread, but now that I'm looking through this section of the forums, I'm find out it's common. If you could point me in the right direction for the fix, I would really appreciate it! Only thing I'm scared of is having an issue with the new phone and not being able to have it fixed after I root it...
The phone is great so far. I'm coming from 3 different One X's. The camera and screen on the One X definitely destroy the S3, but everything else the S3 seems to hold it's own or have a slight edge over the HTC

Good job picking the S3 then!
The only fix I found was for root, and just put the cell standby lower down on the list, or not on the list at all. I'm not sure if it made the battery drain slower but definitely changed the %s in the battery settings.
Here's the link just make sure you have the UVALH2 or UVALEM version of ICS first though and download the correct zip!
It uses CWM by the way.

What is the most stable rom where everything works and is good on battery life

Amidoinitrite???
I only say that cause there have been quite a few identical threads recently, identical to this, that are very easy to find. Also, that pic gave me teh lulz! Couldn't help it.
On a serious note though, all the roms seem to be pretty damn good in there own ways. I was on cm7 for a while and it was very stable for me. Just flashed cleanGB and samurai kernel the other day, and not only has it been rock solid, but my battery life has been outstanding! As always, though, YMMV. Try em all and see what you like best. Enjoy!

Hang out for a while. Read the threads on what the numerous roms contain. Find out what works for some and not for others. Some are geared for battery life, but you lose something in the process.
Try a few of them out. Look for qbking77's youtube tutorials on how to root/flash/theme/etc. Dont like a rom? Switch! It really is that easy.
Its like buying a new car. What would you like? There is no 'best', but rather what fits you.
Last but not least, when you ask a question, remember that there are some really smart people out here that rightfully just sit back and shake their heads at questions that are easily answered on your own with a little bit of searching.

SFR 1.2.
you can try a couple good kernels with it too. I used genocide.

Most are ROM's are stable, battery life well. I can kill my battery in 3-4 hrs of streaming music from network via bluetooth to a speaker... other wise I can go all day just about. Even with undervolting I only get marginally better battery life in general.
Some apps/widgets are just battery/cpu/gpu/memory/storage etc hogs. If you use your phone your battery will drain. That is a guaranty... usage = less battery
Like others have said your mileage may vary and usually does.
i prefer genocide too
I wish people would stop asking these kind of questions...even more I wish people would stop answering them. Just ignore them and maybe they will actually read the ROM threads like they are supposed to before flashing!
EVERY PHONE IS DIFFERENT!!! What is good for someone elses phone may be bad for yours. Flash and figure it out. Thank you and have a nice day!
I flashed the leaked radios but its still.not resolving my issues service keeps dropping out , next to a thunderbolt i wont move the devices and the vzw galaxy nexus will loose service

Yes. I have a GSM version of the GNEX here in Canada and am running s custom 4.0.3 ROM and my signal does this ALL THE DAMN TIME!!!
I have flashed several radios and none fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is either going back to the STOCK 4.0.1 ROM that came with my device or to flash the Android Revolution HD ROM which is based on 4.0.2. On that ROM I dont lose signal.
I am getting quite frustrated about this issue too. I have posted many time in various threads looking for answers and NO ONE seems to have any idea about this which I find weird as I have seen countless others with the same issues as I describe.
I had similar issues with my N1, and it turned out to be related to the older SIM card I had. You may want to consider a new SIM...

Thanks for the reply. I have a new thread open to try and generalize these issues more clearly. Please see here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1487239
Also... I have 2 different SIM cards from my provider and one is a bit old (but works just fine in my SGSII) and one is new with a different number and this happens with BOTH SIM cards.
Again, please see the thread I have linked here for more info.

So just uninstall VZ Navigator? I mean, I don't know why all these carriers slap their own navigation on top of the G-Maps one.
Well.... Maybe I should.
But I don't like installing a custom launcher or jailbreaking the phone.
I received an message from a reviewer works for Wirefly, saying that his LG runs VZ navigator smoothly. So, maybe that's just his issue.

I don't mean any offense by this at all, but if you're not going to root (jailbreak) your phone, you're pretty much on the wrong forum. That's all we do around here.
I have a reason for that;
after i use the phone for a month, i will bring this back to korea, where LG provides excellent customer service. But they don't take care of handsets bricked by rooting. So, I want to root it at least 1 years after I bought the phone.
Before you do anything to your phone, would you please make a screenshot of Settings -> About phone (scroll to the bottom)
I'd like to make sure our unbricked phones have the same data there.
Screenshot can be taken by pressing at the same time power button and home button, the images stored in /sdcard/Captured Images/
(first time I see a linux with spaces in the filenames..go figure)
This is mine:

I wanted to post this here for anyone out there who did not know this was available. Also for anyone like me who wanted to enjoy Google Now, but does not currently want to run Jellybean at this time. I installed this yesterday and it has been working flawlessly on my GNex running AOKP M6!

(I am running Mikeyxda's Version 6 Offline/Online)
PS dont be worried, I know it looks a little naked. I just havn't gotten to setting up any cards, I've mainly been toying around with the voice search and learning the commands. But the cards are fully funtional, they were there after I installed the app, but I deleted them.
That is great and all but why on earth would you not be running JB right now? I can see other devices excited about this but we can have the whole package!

not sure how to answer this without sounding rude but...its my phone, i run what i want. sorry, not sure how else to word it.
if someone had a gun to my head and forced me to give an explanation other than that, it would be that I love AOKP, and i want to wait until there is an AOKP JB release.
ive never been one to run and grab the newest thing the second it hits the shelf (no pun intended). id rather sit back and wait until everything i want in a rom is available and stable. ive tried jellybean, i flashed it, explored it, and was not 100% satisfied with what it had to offer thus far, so i flashed back to aokp with which i am 100% satisfied. i certainly experiment with new things when they come out, but I love my phone and I will not sacrafice my personal experience just to be able to say that i have the newest thing. instead, i will hold strong, and monitor the new thing until im ready to run it on a daily basis.
hey, you asked

I dont run JB because AOKP Milestone 6 runs better/smoother than JB and has more tweaks implemented.
I use Google maps almost everyday.. And my GPS either won't lock or it drops all the time.. I try rebooting my phone.. I tried changing roms.. Nothing helps.. I tried TW Roms and ASOP roms.. I tried in the city and in the country.. I even tried out of state.. And I get the same issue.. Right now I'm using pacman rom.. And on NB4 baseband.. Please help
First off, switch back to TW.
Odin the stock 4.4.2 and root it. Then try an alp like TopNT.
If that doesn't work could be the internal antennae in your phone, especially if you dropped it
Thanks.. I'll try that when I get home.
Also check the link in my sig for resetting the nvram. It's been known to work for many people.
Sent from my leanKernel 3.11 powered stock 4.4.2 (NF9) SM-N900T
I even tried replacing the device.. nope its HORRIBLE in the new device as well, my Note 1 locks so quickly, note 3 is crap.
This worked for me...
I've been frustrated by this too as I use my Note 3 in my car as a navigation device; I even have a charging cradle for it. Tried all sorts of apps (including TopNT) and suggested kludges for it to no avail. I searched YouTube one day for 'Note 3 GPS' and tried this. It has dramatically improved the GPS' performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC8jNb38gaY
The litmus test for me was how well it worked overseas. I regularly travel internationally and was frustrated by the phone's poor performance in a place like, say, Hong Kong. It took forever to obtain an initial position lock there. Now it locks relatively quickly as long as it has a clear shot at the GPS constellation and maintains the lock well enough to be useful while walking around there. At home it finds itself almost as quickly as my other device ( a Note 8.0) or my previous phones (an international S4 or an AT&T S2 Skyrocket). It used to be a little drifty in the car even after it had a solid lock; now it doesn't display that behavior either. It's worth a try. I hope that you find this useful!
