[Q] problems with usb connection - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

hoping somebody can help me with this problem... with my dinc2, when i plug it into my mac, it charges but nothing else. the mac doesn't seem to recognize anything has been plugged into it and the phone doesn't seem to recognize it's been plugged into a mac. no prompt for connection type, nothing. i set the default connection to mass storage, i've reflashed from cm7.2 to stock, nothing seems to get the connection working properly. is there a chance the usb port on the phone has broken in a way that still allows it to charge but not to transfer data?
thanks for any advice!

It could be the port...only reason I say this is that when my port was going bad I would plug it into my pc and windows would say unrecognized USB device and I couldn't see it as a drive.
Was is working before? Have you changed anything since the last time it worked? Have you tried on a windows pc?
If it is the port you can grab one off eBay for under ten dollars.

it was working last time i used it, which was in august. it just sat around since then. i have a windows boot on my mac, i tried it in there with similar results. it at least acknowledged that it found a device but it couldn't load the drivers. trying to load them manually was a no go, for whatever reason windows wouldn't let me select the one i downloaded. as in the button to select a file was grayed out. i'm not a superuser with windows. or mac or android apparently

Wow, that is a really good idea for it... Anyways, since I don't drive.... It may be the port like someone said above, or just the cable that was used. If you have tried different cables on different computers, than you might have a dead port that can only charge.

thanks! here i thought it would be easy too. i did try several cables and two computers. rats. i really thought it would be strange for the port to be able to charge though and not transfer data. oh well.

My DInc did the same thing. It started not being able to transfer data, and eventually quit charging. Replacing the port is a simple 5-10 minute job. And like another poster said can be had for about 10.00 on ebay.

Xoom - USB wireless keyboard and mouse

So, with the update, anyone think we can hook up a wireless receiver (I'm thinking the logitech unifying receiver) and use both the keyboard and mouse with it? That's how I do it with the laptop, just wondering if anyone can read (and understand) the release notes to see if this is possible...
Well the support is for USB keyboards and mice, so I doubt the PC setup you have will work since the xoom probably wont have the drivers for that specific receiver. Not to mention that sounds really cumbersome.

Sorry, did I have this wrong? As I understood, this update enables USB host. Doesn't that mean that (assuming drivers were available) that USB keyboards and mice would work?
Not really that cumbersome, BTW- plenty of folk on here are already talking about connecting USB thumb drives. This setup would be the same, at least in terms of what's connected to the xoom. If you really need to know what I'm planning, here's what I have to set it up:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Note...AB9G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1305066484&sr=8-8
That looks pretty nice you're right. I just Dont think the drivers will be supported.

Gah. Well, I'll just have to give it a go when I get the update. Side question: any suggestion on where to get a microUSB to USB Host connector? I can't figure out which are host and which are not...
this is the only officially supported one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054636
There are other microusb to usb converters, but they lack the pin setup required, contrary to popular belief. This is straight from the motorola engineer who designed it.

No way. Sorry, you just lost me there. Any $20 USB cable is definitely intended for chumps. Thanks anyways, I'll just take my chances with amazon. I'll update once it arrives.

suit yourself. The amazon one you buy will not work. I could hunt down the Moto forums post explaining why it wont, but It sounds like you wouldnt believe me anyways, so I wont waste my time trying to help you not waste your money. I do hope your setup works to be honest, it seems kinda cool, but this stuff is just too proprietary. Good luck.
One last aside, if paying 20 dollars is really that huge of a deal to you, you can make your own USB host cable. Which is why those 3 dollar amazon ones wont work, they lack usb host.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13673416
I realize I made a typo in my earlier statement when I typed it added support for "Bluetooth keyboards", I meant to say "USB keyboards". Weve had bluetooth support since launch, that must have sounded ridiculous to you. I had basically meant to say that since you are planning on using a wireless receiver, the drivers would not be there. Now if you use the right usb host cable with a usb-cabled keyboard, then yes, it will definitely work. And with that I will stop jacking your thread.
If that's the case, then why are there several threads where people have updated to 3.1 with $3 cables from eBay?
and I knew what you were saying earlier even with the mistake
sent from my face
For the sake of overall Xoom awesomeness, I hope you turn out to be right. More options never hurt. Ive read threads were people got a usb host cable from ebay/amazon, and some types worked while others wouldn't. Its really trial and error I suppose.
Actually in all honesty USB Host does not mean every keyboard or mouse will work.... unix based drivers would first have to be directly recognized within the Android OS... most will work but not all... thats where testing comes into play

If anyone wants to pick one up without having to wait for it to ship from Hong Kong, I found a listing on eBay within the US for a nicer cable for $8.95. It's black to match the Xoom and has an angled micro USB connector to avoid it sticking out. It shipped the same day and was delivered two days after I ordered!
I can confirm it's working with multiple wireless mouse/keyboard sets as well as standard USB mice/keyboards and flash drives... I started geeking out when the cable got delivered and promptly started plugging every USB device I could find into my Xoom, just because I can!

USB Adapter Review

I went to Best Buy and happened to pick up the very last USB adapter. I got it with a ShopKick $5 discount so it came out to about $16 with tax. My first impression was that the box was much smaller than I expected. It was about the size of my Droid.

I preceded to open it up and noticed how much smaller it was than I expected.
The first thing I plugged in was my usb wireless mouse.
My Tab recognized it right away and gave me a nice message saying it worked and now I had a cursor on the screen. Everything worked on the mouse except for the right mouse button, but I kind of expected that.
The next thing I tried was my Droid. It gave me an error saying that it was too high powered to work, which is a bummer, but I can still transfer between the two with bluetooth even if it takes a little while to set up.
Finally I tried a usb drive with a track by Deadmau5 because I knew that that song was not in my library or my Google Music library. Sure enough it showed up in my Music app, but I couldn't find it in Astro File Manager. There was a folder for "usbdrive", but when I opened it, it was empty.
Overall Opinion
I was expecting the adapter to be about twice the size, but was quite happy to find that it was smaller. It seems to work with many devices, but it is maddening when you get the "too high powered device" error. It was also a very tight fit to fit a USB device into the end and you had to use quite a bit of force to plug stuff in. I feel like the overall plug itself fits very loose though in the Tab and that bothers me. It's just too bad Samsung couldn't have fit it inside the tab
7/10
Pros:
Small
Allows many usb devices
Adds more functionality
Cons:
It fits into the Tab loosely
Expensive at $19.99 for what it is
Doesn't work with high powered devices
Thanks for the review... was planning on buying it, but maybe I'll hold off for a bit.

I would recommend it, it's just kind of expensive for what it is.
We need a version of this that allows a USB power. I know it's another thing to plug in but it would save from needing to carry/plug in a powered USB hub just to use an external HD.
I got mine for 10 dollars after a 10 dollar RZ coupon from Best Buy. Everything I've plugged into it works so far (Mouse, Keyboard, Logitech USB Controller, different thumb drives). I have no complaints.
Of interest is that the Engrish directions state that you need to plug whatever USB device into the adapter first, and then plug the adapter into the Tab, or else risk damaging the Tab. Not too sure why.

Will that work?

Micro to USB Adaptor is Awesome!

So the day I bought My SGS2 I seen a Video on YouTube about this guy using a Micro USB to Female USB adapter, and all the cool things it could do.
I looked on eBay and from good old China (where everything is made! Probably the sun and God where made there too...) it was only $4.
So I though well I might never use it, but for $4 I'll buy it for the hell of it.

I got my USB-OTG cable today, and was quite disappointed. It was annoying to see that NTFS wasn't compatible. Also every external bus powered HD I tried complained about it being a high powered USB device, as did my iPod.
I also tried a USB Optical Mouse, and a cursor popped up on the screen, but it wasn't moving I will try a cheaper one at work tomorrow. USB Pen drives/Flash disks seem to work, as long as it is only Fat32.
- Edit -
Tried a different (Dell) optical mouse at work today and it seems to work fine, also tried my 16gb USB flash disk and that worked great and quite fast, tried some films and documents through it and it was flawless.
A couple of people have mentioned that a 'bigger cable' or 'powered cable' is needed to get bigger USB drives working. What exactly does that mean??
Yet i tried mine las night, its fast respond for flash disk reading but need a bigger cable to read external hdd. But i think it necessary for those who often worked woth flash disk

good luck also you may have to push downon the device while it is on the cable or also try stripping the red and black wires
Anyone else having issues getting this to recognize on their PC? I have one made, but when I connect, it shows up as "unknown device". Well, i picked up a multi meter from Walmart and quickly discovered that my jig had continuity so after a little investigating it seemed that the USB ports on the computer weren't responding, tho that was easily fixed with a restart.
Great news!..... Except for the fact that i can't for the life of me get a good enough connection to the watch to even get the drivers installed, let alone run some commands in fastboot.

I used one that I purchased from Lowes a while ago so I already had it laying around. It is On-Q LegrandRJ45 Data/Phone Jack, here is a link:
http://www.legrand.us/onq/structured-wiring/preconfigured/inserts/wp3460-wh.aspx
After you separate the the two halves of the jack (This was the hardest part) you can slide the front plastic part off and it leaves you with your punchdown back piece and the brass leads sticking straight out so you can just bend them as needed and hook up your wires.
I should have taken pics but I ended up sealing everything up with a nice wrapping after I made sure it was working.
PROTIP: after you assemble the cable use your tester again to make sure each lead in the usb plug is reaching the exposed connectors (I also had trouble with my white and black wires and had to strip them before connecting them)

As I had feared, these were the drivers I had been using. What else could I do?
*BUMP* Any solution to the unknown device found.
In the video, was mentioned that someone may be making the usb connector and have them for sale..if so, may I have a link to purchase.?
I did make my on, but in bootloader mode, once I connected the usb connector, that I made, the device was identified with "fastboot devices" command, and the device did display that the usb tranfer mode was active, but when commands sent as instructed, to reboot bootloader or any command like the unlock command, the adb screen would display something like, not a good command..
long story short, I kept tinkering, thinking I had the usb cable pins connected in wrong slot, so I switch connection to other pins in the device, which was mentioned in the video to be careful and not connect to wrong ones..so I tried this..nothing ever would display, as connected, so I switched back to the original pin layout connection, now in bootloader mode, nothing happens when I connect, the device never displays that I have connected usb like before..
Have I shorted the pins out, and damaged the device to where it will not accept usb connection again.? The device in watch mode functions normally, also when I connect the usb cable I made, the charging (battery) icon displays, like the cable is charging the device, but in adb window, the device has never responded, even originally, before I messed around with the pin layout..now only the charge icon comes up in watch mode, nothing in bootloader mode..
Should I sale this device and purchase another, because this one can NEVER be unlocked now..??

Oh I read it. Cables have nothing to do with msm/fastboot/ADB. If you plug in your cable and msm doesn't work, its driver related. I have a 50 ft USB 3.0 cable extension and it works fine. I even have a USB 2.0 25 foot cable extension, works fine. USB c to USB c, works fine, etc

I'm glad you've had better experience than others (including myself).
Any USB 3.0 or 3.1 works with Fastboot. It's not cable related. The only different thing is the USB protocol.
I personally use a FULL USB 3.1 cable (Type C to Type C) which transfers my files from OP9 Pro to the PC at speed of around 300-400Mb/S. Also MSM tool finishes in around 90-100 Seconds unlike the stock USB 2.0 cable which takes 3x the time.
Edit: Same goes for MSM tool (EDL by Qualcomm), doesn't matter what cable you use. If you have issues, it's driver related or your USB port on the PC.

Wrong. I've got cables that work with MSM and others that don't work with MSM.
Same driver, same computer, same ports, back-to-back testing.
I don't think I've ever run into issues with FastBoot nor did I mention FastBoot in my OP.
Cheaper cables will not work as well for high speed/data transfers past ~six feet.
If you're not going to post the make/model of a cable you know from experience works with MSM at 10' and has high data transfer speeds, then please don't bother posting on my thread.

"It doesn't work for me, therefore, my statement is true". Literally own multiple 3M+ cables that I use for MSM tool.
Not sure why are you instantly this mad. Get a snickers.

Are you overly sensitive to constructive responses? lol
You can research for yourself. This isn't a "me issue".
Gonna be putting you on ignore since you're just a troll now.

No, just saying that you should calm down, you're literally over-reacting to any reply. Literally just went through your posts, and saw enough.
Calm down guys. It's just a cable.
I think part of the problem is sellers who list the cables as usb3/3.1 and they're not, that's why he's looking for one specifically that works for sure > 10ft. I also have cables that don't work for msm/edl/data transfer at all. They're just low rate charging cables. I have no reason to buy those so they were probably part of something else or listed as usb3 cables and they actually weren't. I suspect they aren't abundant because of the length limitation you're already aware of and people expecting their $4 cables to charge from 7 houses down.
I'm not much help to your thread. I know for sure these work at 6ft https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07TBNDLVW?
You might get away with using a USB coupler. I've had slower than dash/warp but faster than non-dash/warp charging when using two of those together with a coupler. I've not tried to use them for msm or data transfer
Just to update the thread, I ended up buying this cable and it was a poor experience.

I never got around to testing its speed for transferring files but I didn't notice any issues.
It "seemed" to be fast.
But yesterday I needed to use ADB and it didn't work!
So, I broke out my old three foot USB 3 cable and that worked using the exact same USB port on my computer.
Then, I swapped it for this 10' Anker again and suddenly that now worked for ADB too.
I figured it was a just a fluke.
So, I then kicked off an MSM back to stock on the 10' Anker cable.
And that led to my poor experience.
The 3' cable usually takes about 3-6 minutes to complete MSM.
This cable took seven hundred and seventy seven minutes to complete MSM.
Yes, 777 minutes!!!!
It would go 30 minutes at a time without moving the progress indicator.
I was positive I'd end up with a bricked phone.
But it eventually finished overnight.

WOW....of course the description stated charging cable without mentioning sync. I have ran into this when picking up different generic cables. They would charge but would not sync the phone.
