Bad ESN Question

Okay, I was on a family plan for years with T-Mobile. Recently, my father, the primary account holder passed away. Paying the bill went to the wayside and my phone got shut off. Now, I've been trying to pay them in a way that will get my phone back on. They are being beyond unreasonable. I had a horrible experience with customer care and I am planning on no longer being a T-Mobile customer.
Here's my question:
Once I tell T-Mobile to go **** themselves, they will give my GSIII a bad ESN. If I unlock the phone, can I, in good conscience, sell the phone to, say, an AT&T customer?
I have no desire to screw over a T-Mobile customer by giving them a phone with a bad ESN. Since the hardware is identical, if I unlock it and flash an AT&T radio, would an AT&T customer be good to go?

Yes, you could unlock the phone and use it on AT&T. They won't get 4G LTE on AT&T but still get HSPA+ speeds on it.

Gotcha. So, the hardware is not exactly identical then? I just want to know what to put in the ad.

T-Mobile uses an MSM8260A which is the same SoC as the AT&T version MINUS LTE. So other than LTE, the T999 will work just fine on AT&T. The i747 will NOT work on T-Mobile though.

Would I be correct in assuming that it would NOT work for Boost, Straight Talk or anything else that uses TMob's towers?

Any GSM carrier will work on it once unlocked. They do have dual core processors. Is just that they use different frequency bands to connect to 4G.

First of all, I am truly sorry about your loss. Second, they may not tell you this, but you are under no obligation to honor a contract with T-Mobile that you have not entered. Of course this assumes no other agreement between you and T-Mobile and that the phone was not on some kind of installment plan. Otherwise, the phone is yours, and you have not violated the terms of any contract, therefore they should not "flag" your IMEI (what you meant by ESN). Technically, they certainly could flag it, but I would immediately call their customer service, explain the situation to them, and ensure that they clarify the EXACT reason for flagging your IMEI. Now, none of this means that they cannot cut off your service for non-payment.

[Q] Need help to unlock phone for Military Reserve duty tomorrow to leave country

I'm leaving the country for my Reserve time tomorrow, and need to get my Galaxy S3 unlocked. T-mobile has been running me around and not giving me a code. Can anyone help me to get this unlocked so I can use it OCONUS while I'm gone starting tomorrow morning? I can provide IMEI upon request

As far as I know you either have to get it from tmobile or buy it online. Haven't heard of another way for this phone, sorry. Be safe man!

I wouldn't pay for it id ask tmobile and tell them you are leaving for military reasons and they should gove it to you.

I highly doubt that if he really told T-Mobile he was leaving the Country they would not give him an unlock code, that's Verizon level BS, not T-Mo

Dont listen to people talking about "tricks" or "just say you wanna cancel."
Just call in, talk to customer care. If you feel you are getting the runaround, then ask why you cannot get the code and then speak with a manager. Not because a manager has more power to do what a care agent cant (trust me, they don't in this case)....but a manager may be able to understand you better if there seems to be a breakdown in communication between you and the customer service agent.
Not to mention that if you have filed for the unlock code before, the offline team that process the code should have told you why they cannot give you the code. If they gave you a wrong code, it is possible that the imei number inputted was wrong and needs to be resubmitted. Make sure they use the imei directly off the device and not off the systems.
So long as it has been 40 days since you activated your account, and you bought the phone from a TMobile sales channel (not on ebay or anything) than you should have no problem having the unlock request sent in. It may take a couple days for the code to come to you, though. It comes by email.
If you are traveling out of the country, than get the international customer care number. You can call in to customer care using this number, and call from anywhere in the world and will not be charged anything to talk to customer care.
There are some restrictions, of course. You have to be current on your bill is a big one.
This is all general information. They should be able to tell you all this or anything else needed if you call in. They should be open in a little under 3 hours.

These tricks do work though.
The retention department are the senior csr and know all the stuff already. You don't need to say you want to cancel, just tell them you situation. They'll most likely help you better.
I assume the csr have been pretty bad lately, hearing all these unhelpful examples. They probably hired a lot of new people recently.

Called a while ago, like two days after getting my phone and explained my reason (it's for when I'm out of the country). Had no problem and the guy took my IMEI, sent it off to Sammy, and I got an e-mail a few days later with my devices code.
If you can't get any luck through 611, try going to Google+ and ask T-Mobile on there to help. The employees behind the account often are helpful!

I am in the same exact boat. I am already over seas and stuck with no support from tmobile because I haven't had my phone long enough. I can't find anyone who has manually unlocked the t mobile version. Samsung won't help either because they say they can't verify phone ownership and tboblie will not contact samsung. Tmobile says they get the codes from Samsung and Samsung said they won't until tmobile says it's ok

ok i figured it out , kinda . since i havent had my phone for the 40 days t mobile wont send me my unlock code. Being i am overseas and want to use the phone and not buy a new one i was turned onto unlockclient.com paid my $25 and unlocked my phone in 5 min... yes it was that easy and thankfully the tmobile gs3 is a pina (sp) band because i am using a 1700 band and still get 4g

Ebay has the code for $8.

Just call 611 tell the your situation and they will ask you some info and in a day or so you will be emailed you code. You have to have been on tmobile for about three months. They are cool about that and never given a hard time to myself or others I know that had done so.
This is one area where tmo excellent.

Same for me and I am on a prepaid Monthly4G plan and they are in the process of e-mailing it to me.... FREE from your carrier!

Has someone tried tool 14???

tested and it says it can unlock my phone but haven't gone through the payment option. i'll leave it a bit since i don't need an unlocked phone yet

dunno bout them but on my page I give the code in 1 to 15 minutes for only 2 or 3 bucks more.

I just got done talking to a normal call rep and the supervisor, i even gave them a hard time, i told them about how i owned my devices out right, i told them about how service on tmobile sucks at my house, and they still told me i had to wate 60 days from activation. so how you get them to give it to you?

Got mine from T-Mo on Wednesday, called them on Thursday, send them the receipt on Fri (by fax) and had my unlock code today (Sun).

How you do that there?

not same for me and i contacted tmobile they gave me some story about having to be a custumer for 60 days, and yes i have my 649.99+tax receipt. I am a prepaid custumer. I even gave them an extreamly hard time which normaly works for stuborn carriers

Send them to their own website explaining. Regardless if you purchase the device outright and have documentation they have to send you the unlock code. I posted it somewhere on here.

I contacted the better businesses buro and opend a complaint against them, since that time they have been extrodanaraly helpfull. Also see the above post about directing them to their own web page that states if you buy the device outright they are required to give you the unlock code whenever you ask. Get that adress n call if they still hastle you call the BBB

you can purchase an unlock code on ebay Im told for under 10 bucks. Not sure about paypal alternatives though.

You can get it unlocked by T-Mobile for free.
For customers with a Prepaid Plan, T-Mobile will provide the SIM Unlock Code upon request to eligible customers, provided the requesting customer has a minimum of 60 days of active service with T-Mobile and either a Prepaid Plan account balance of at least $10.00 or a prior refill within the last 30 days.

I just purchased 2 gs3's from Tmobile at retail price. Whatever you do, do not use cell-unlock-.com which is what Ive tried and which was advertised on this forum. They said they would do it for under $5 but they were so slow and at the end of me waiting 2 days, they did not deliver. After paying they said someone will email me with the code within 24 hours. After about 15 hours I received an email saying they could not retrieve the code automatically and would have to do it manually and they would get back to me within another 24 hours(personally I think they were just buying themselves another 24 hours because they suck). Well another 15 hours went by and finally I get an email from paypal with a refund lmao. They didn't even have the decency to email me an explanation. But atleast they gave my money back. Worst experience ever!
Anyway, I never had an account with tmobile. I called them up and asked for them to submit an unlock code request for the two phones. I faxed in a copy of the receipts and by the next day I had the codes in my email.
Let me ask you, you said you were going to use a prepaid plan, why not use simple mobile which runs on tmobiles towers. Just pop in sim and voila, you're good to go without unlocking. Thats what I did.....I went through all that trouble and did not need to unlock lol. But atleast I have the codes in case I want to switch carriers, but just saying if this is holding you up then hook up with simple mobile. Just my opinion, good luck.

Simple Mobile throttles or disconnects your data after u use 3gb of data or more... I have already tried them crooks. But I want to sim unlock a few phones that were purchased used. So calling tmo is not really an option for me. I did one already using cellunlocker but they are pricey at 24 bucks.

Oh yeah, you were the one in my other post that didn't like simple mobile. Yo cellunlocker charged me $5.99......but yea they suck. In the other post, you mentioned tmobile prepaid for $70. Is that with tax included or no? Also what other plans are good as far as mvno?

It's 70 total. I tried straight talk on att sim, for a few weeks but att data speeds on hspa + are not so good (compared to tmo) and I found it to be unreliable especially in NYC. As for throttling on straight talk. I don't know if that's an issue, I didn't get that far, but i have read that they do and I have read that they don't... Soooo, give them a try, only down side is that the Sims for straight talk is only available online.

I have used galaxy unlock tools from the play store it's free and has a option for galaxy s3 you have to be rooted for it to work give it a try.

Sprint Dropped My Line

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan. I had one of my two lines with sprint frozen starting in Oct. since I wouldn't be using it. They do this for military all the time. My upgrade for that line was supposed to be in Nov. I was planning on giving that upgrade to my brother on my other line since I won't be using for a while But the funny thing is, Sprint completely dropped my line within days of me getting the upgrade and now... No upgrade. I'm sure that I can call and complain to them till they fix it. But maybe it's a better idea to just load T-Mobile onto this phone and try out the pay as you go deal. Anyone here have any reasons for me to stay with Sprint? Or know any of the benefits of switching? I'm just interested in what any of your opinions are on this. Thanks!

Tmo uses sim card. You could go with boost if you research how to flash a boost rom in the development section, plus you'll still have wimax as well.

Oops My bad. Boost, not tmobile. I've never been able to use 4G because of the areas I've lived in but that is a plus to still be able to use it. Thanks gatesmarch123.

T-Mobile means you could get the Nexus 4. Nexus 4 = Worldwide quad-band radio frequencies. Pop in a sim from another country if needed and you're gold.

I agree with the post above. Mighrt be a good way to get the Nexus 4 on t-mobile.

I like the phone I have a lot, but I know that Nexus devices are great and I am up for trying out any service provider (Besides ATT of course!). Thanks for the advice. Since I'll be traveling a lot, a Worldwide quad-band phone sounds good

You know, with the little experience I had with Straight Talk prepaid service, it was great. I had an S3 on it and the service was very good. Best of all they have an unlimited plan including international service for $60 a month prepaid. If you're up for trying new things, wouldn't hurt to try Straight Talk for a month. I mean if you don't like it, the Nexus 4 can be used with any carrier that uses SIM cards. So you have plenty of options.

Hmmm... T-mobile is sounding preeetty good to me. I'm liking the Nexus 4 too.

You could flash to cricket, really simple to do and you don't need a donor phone like you would flashing to boost.

That's a good idea too premise. Cricket is getting somewhat popular where I live. I can do that and have a really nice back up phone or give it to someone. I really do love the Epic 4g Touch. But I really think that I am going to try out T-mobile and get the Nexus 4. I can get the 16gb version for 350 directly from Google. Anyone know any other good deals?

That seems to be true haha they do what they want with your line that you PAY for. But still, AT&T is the worst. They want $800 to cancel my wife's line even with my deployment orders + we do not get service where I live. I guess I will have to take care of it in person when I get home in 7 months. Not cool at all.
