So, I rooted my phone. I use stock but have had CM for my Evo in the past. I like the idea of getting JB and getting auto updates by having CW update checker. I decided I would like to try CM for these reasons and to stop the OTA push that I keep getting. I know that there are ways to remove this but would rather go to CM. My question is, I noticed there isnt a stable version for the GS3 and there is only a snapshot for the M series, so what has been the most stable version to use. I saw the comments section in CW on CM 10 nightly for the 10/5 update and it seemed to have good reviews. Anyone want to chime in here? This is my everyday phone and would like a version I can rely on and have it update via the clockwork mod.
aokp!
if I was you I would go with the aokp ROM in the original dev section, I've tried the cm10 it just isn't stable, if you use the aokp ROM with the kernel from the same dev you'll get crazy battery life, crazy performance, stability and everything you're looking for on a daily driver, the only thing I think that's still wrong anybody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 4g is not working quite yet, but I'm in a 3g area so not an issue for me lol

Crap, there is just way too much info out there my head is about to explode. Never heard of aokp, anything you DONT like about that rom other than the 4g issue? I wouldn't mind having JB but I really dont feel like dealing with crap not working, bugs etc. I had to deal with CM on my EVO having bug issues with Bluetooth and it was annoying. If I stayed root using stock and just did OTA updates it would just break root right? It only screws things up if you have a flashed rom I thought. My thought process would be to just leave things the way they are and just wait for JB to be release OTA and just re root. Or does the OTA just fail when you are rooted?

If you like cm10/cm9 you would def like aokp, its like cm but just way more customization, more options, and with a nice kernel aokp is the best, apart from the 4g issue NOTHING is wrong with the aokp ROM, is buttery smooth, good battery life no glitches I've been using aokp for a while no problems on my end

Im thinking about swithing to CM but with my current rom and kernel combo i never get anything less than 5½ hours of screen time, sometimes it can reach 6hrs.
Does CM have comparible battery life?
I read somwhere in CM threads that Twiz roms have optimized Qualcomm dalvic cache(or something like that) and CM doesnt,so this takes toll an battery life.I dont know if there is any truth to that

idk about cm I only tried a few of their nightly builds and they seemed to be getting more unstable every day, the only ROM that I've found stable is the aokp, without using the phone for more than a few texts a calls I can get around 20 hours battery, playing hardcore games the whole time about 7 hours, I would post screen shots if I had em, and all this is with the processor overclocked to 2.1 GHz I bet you can get more out of the battery without messing with the processor

Best i got is 6hrs with brightness set half way, wifi on,sync off and orplane mode on.

What 4g issues r u all referring to on AOKP? I don't have any.
So I loaded both Mods and I didn't really like AOKP but just have to tinker with the visuals I think and it will grow on me. Cyanogen was what I expected except the Bluetooth with voice dialer or phone wont work. I will queue the Bluetooth and voice dial will come on but wont hear my command. If I manually go into the phone app it will disconnect when I get in an active call. I am going to tinker with AOKP a bit more but if it doesnt impress I think I will end up just going back to stock rooted and just unroot when an OTA update is pushed and reroot it. I dont think the wait for Jelly Bean is going to be that much longer anyways. I was happy with stock, just didnt like the constant bother when OTA update is pushed but not as annoying as the things I find in the other ROMS. I will give AOKP a bit more time to adjust first.
Just read up on another thread that this is a common issue to have with BT and JB. Sigh, it was worth a shot.
FWIW That animation boot logo on AOKP is so incredibly gay (No offense to anyone) thank god they allow you to change it easily.

Dont have LTE right now so hoping no issues by the time it rolls out here. If someone could educate me though, I noticed I dont even connect to 4G is this different and not available on the GS3 from the 4G I was connecting to on my EVO. In other words is there a backwards compatible 4G? It seems to search only for 4G LTE which we dont have so I am only connecting 3G. Kinda sucks I cant even use regular 4G.
Flashed back to stock rooted and glad I did. I like everything working. The only thing I miss now is the ability to be in my locked screen and have it in landscape mode. Seems as though it only goes into landscape after I unlock. I use the stock ticker and clock and would be cool to have those in landscape while leaving it locked.
I wonder if any of those orientation apps in the market would fix this. Just dont want to throw away a few bucks and not have it work

I'm currently looking for a ROM base to modify to my needs. I really like the features available in cm but I'm not sure if cm10 (stock) is stable enough for production use yet. Does anyone have experience with this?

Other than that it was awesome!

FYI - even though your bars are gray, you still have an active data connection. When they turn blue it means they are connected to googles servers

GPS is perfect. Locks immediately. Battery life is nothing to write home about. I have the official extended battery and with decent use I might get 8hrs if I'm lucky. I'm up for ideas on other JB ROMs for Verizon that have better battery life.

JTFC, that's awful. How does it compare with what you had on ICS? I get decent battery life on JB (CM10), but still slightly lower (10-15%) than on CM9, but 1.5 to 2 days is still possible with my use + 3 hours screen on or so over that time. This holds true for all the JB ROMs I've run. 4-5 hours of screen on time over a workday of hard use is still possible for me, but idle drain seems to be hit/miss, some nights 0.25%/hour, other's 1%. Sync seems to be a more of a battery eater on JB, and I haven't bothered running Google Now since the first day or two I ran JB.
Shall see how today's JRO03L build performs.

Unfortunately I don't have anything to compare it to. The GNex was a warranty replacement for my old Thunderbolt. After I got the GNex I immediately rooted and threw the first JB ROM on it I could find. I will keep searching through various threads in the development forum and see what I can come up with.
Oh and thanks for confirming my suspicion that my battery life is below average. The weekend is here. Plenty of time for experimenting

I highly recommend Better Battery Stats if you don't have it already. There's a free XDA version posted on the site, but the Market version is well worth the ~3$ also. Sync and location services (GPS or Google) and Google Now seem to be the biggest offenders on JB. I run sync and location sparingly.
That said, the GN is definitely no battery queen unfortunately :crying:
Anyone have any idea when we will see a stable CM 9 for Galaxy SIII (AT&T)? I was flashing CM 10, but too many issues. The latest CM 9 nightly (8/26) seems pretty good...
Also, any idea if TAPP works with the most recent CM 9 nightly?
i am waiting for a stable cm9 too... but they stopped posting nightlies two weeks ago.... they were supposed to post weeklies instead... but they did not post the weeklies for CM9 on (09/02) as supposed.... i am guessing they all focus on CM10 instead of doing a RC/stable CM9 version....
are they giving up on us?

Got it, thanks for the info.
BTW, Simply Tapp works great with 8/26. To be honest, I haven't experienced any major bugs on this version. Maybe it is as close to "Stable" as we will get.
I'm starting to seriously doubt that there will ever be a stable CM9 release for this device, which will be a huge disappointment unless CM10 improves a lot.

Compared to CM9, there are 2 areas in which CM10 is currently a huge step back.
Battery life - The battery life of this device with CM9 is absolutley awesome; the battery is often at 60% or more when I get home from a normal workday. With CM10, it seems to chew through 10-15% per hour, even when it's not being used at all.
ActiveSync - I cannot sync contacts or calendar entries from my employer's Zimbra server with CM10. I believe that this is a Jelly Bean problem, rather than something specific to CM10, but it's still a show-stopper.
The combination of the above problems and the CM9 camera issues have actually driven me to revert to the stock-based Ariel ROM - something I would never have imagined myself doing.

I agree, CM9 battery life was awesome for me, as well, but I'm getting as good as 3-5% per hour from moderate use w/the latest CM10 builds.

I'm in love with CM9 based AOKP from Task/Ktoonsez.
It's too bad they didn't finish it. It was like 95% done when they stopped developing it and started working full time on CM10 based AOKP.
Freaking stable as hell with exceptional battery life.
This latest 9/5 version of CM10/AOKP is pretty sweet so far though. Lots of big issues were fixed. Still a ways to go but the things that are working are all stable for me so far.

I've been relying on my phone to wake me up for class for the past two weeks, no problems yet. I do miss that progressive volume alarm and nature tones on stock though, very soothing . But the smoothness and amazing battery life are worth it.

I might use my device a little less than average, but I've seen a hell of a lot less bugs on aokp than on stock. (out of the box copy and paste didn't work at all.)

Think it all comes down to what you want, I typically run one for a while, try another till I find a good home.. So far... I've ran CM10, Super Galaxy 1.8, AOKP. CM10 nightlies.. if I could only figure out how to get the mounts changed because I don't use an external sd card..
I agree on the cm10 latest nightly but make sure to flash 5.3 first or it may give you sdcard errors.

For daily use CM9 beta 1. I don t think CM10 is quite polished enough although its fun to try out and see whats will be ready soon. For touchwiz roms my recent favorite is Coalition black
No-Name was what I ran the longest.
About to switch to nightlies from the 5.3 alpha CM10 from Phantomphreak53. I loved the theme in No-Name, and battery life was fair. I got to say though, the CM10 is the coolest thing I seen on this phone since I tried Hybrid Paranoidandroid ICS. Tempted to try the JB version. I got two batteries and on CM10, I get 4 hours on one and 5 on the other. On No-Name I got 10-14 hours on the bigger battery, with 2-3 hours screen time.
No google Now on No-Name.
Google Now works good in CM10. The 5.2 has SD cards backwards, and it gets flopped in 5.3. 5.3 has more bugs. google search gets an update after installing the ROM (that doesn't happen in 5.2) and using the keyboard and typing in chrome or built-in browser is causing FCs. I think it may be from taking the search update, just haven't tested this yet. The Apollo app in 5.2 kept adding the same songs to the list every reboot. I moved the music from external to internal SD and that fixed the issue. Bluetooth pairing was instant in 5.2, but I had to remove and repair every time in 5.3. When playing music, in 5.3, turning the screen on will cause audio to cut out for a split second. Those are things I was having issues with. I like the ROM so much still, I can't bring myself to dump it. It is fast and smooth in most areas, and Phantomphreak53 will work this till it is smooth and stable, just look at his other work. Top notch Dev. there! I use my phone twice as much now with JB. May be part of why I only get 5 hours on battery.
ICS ROMs I really like:
Agats
BluKuban
PhantomHacker
For some reason or another always came back to Agats.
The day I became paranoid [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867283] I fell in love and have yet to leave. Keep in mind this is JellyBean based and still being worked on. However, I have yet to run into any real problems besides battery life, but there are some things you can do to help that and eventually it will be better. Nothing beats controlling individual app DPI settings, as wells as themes, and so on [at least for me].
cm9 beta 1. awesome battery/stability/daily driver.
I use CM10 nightlies with little issues. If you have a problem with superuser, just download SuperSU in it's place.
I just flashed Clean Blue (ICS): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910714
Awesome because it gives a pure ICS feel/theme over TouchWiz. Been great so far!

How's battery life on WiFi on 3g and on lte?
Compared to the note 2
I don't believe this is a valid question, one users phone may have tons of wakelocks, another's might be on a stock ROM versus a custom ROM. These are but a few of the different varying factors that could impact battery life from person to person. If you want to know the average battery life you can find that on any carrier's website but as far as I know this is a futile question
Edit: I've heard of someone making their phone last 2 days, whereas mine lasts about 14 hours.

I don't have proof of it I don't really time it I just kind of guess, at the least it's 12 hours, at the most I get 14 hours out of it. Look around there's tons of "how to extend battery life" threads and FAQs as well as guides on wakelocks and how to get rid of one

I agree with you that each setup will yield different results, but I think colonel.shepard was asking for any given setup, what's the differences in battery drain in the following three scenarios:
Connected to Wifi
Connected to 3G
Connected to LTE
I know on my old Evo, when you were connected to WiMax, it drained the battery in no time. I also know that with the LTE technology built into the chip, the battery drain is about the same as with regular 3G connectivity.
I haven't seen any definitive examples of the differences between the three, but I do know that when your radios are searching, they're gonna drain a lot more battery than when they're regularly connected. So I'd think that a connected Wifi is going to give better battery life than 3G or LTE. But that's just my guess out of left field.
Well, I can provide battery life for scenario 3, always connected to LTE. I also keep GPS and NFC on. Bluetooth off.
CM10.1
Putting the ILLA in KILLA since 1985
Being on LTE is like being on wifi for me. No where near the hog 3g is on battery or Wimax was. My phone is on LTE all the time.

So is gs3 worth it still given note 2 n gs4?
The gs3 is very well worth it, and will have every mod or app the s4 will have I'm sure right after the S4 is released. I'm sure you can pick one up for a fraction of the cost than the s4 will be.

If you want, you could even grab the S4 leak and pull and install things like s voice or the launcher from it

If you want a custom rom that is close to stock, the answer is: you should probably stick with the stock rom!

Hi!! I was just wondering which ROM has the best battery calibration so the battery will last longer! I know it is a powerful phone so it is expected to drain faster! Just need a good suggestion for the best ROM that will address this issue. ThAnKs!
This is a hard question to answer because battery life is very different from phone to phone but from what I've seen stock based roms like lifeless usually give the best battery life.

On Lifeless I was able to get full day usage regularly... CM10.2 8/20 build is also giving me good battery life

I had good luck with Lifeless, but am really enjoying CM 10.2
I have underclocked to 1134 and my battery is quite good all things considered. I play Ingress for about 2 hours a day at full brightness with WiFi scanning constantly, and I have to recharge after about an hour of that. But everybody that plays Ingress knows how big a drain it is on battery. When I don't play, the battery is good for 10 hours + for me.

Better make sure you get the invite in order to play. It is, hands down... the... best... game... I have ever played on a mobile phone.
Ingress looks really fun and I started playing recently, but I don't have a plan with a carrier (I'm waiting for FreedomPop to come out). It's so hard to play on only wifi!

Where did you download the CM ROM? I looked on their site but the only model LGOG they list is the GSM model (Verizon, AT&T) and not the Sprint model. I loved the CM mod on my previous phones and wouldn't mind giving it a try on LGOG. Thanks in advanced for your help.
EDIT: NVM. I think I found it. I take it your using the "Unofficial" CM ROM which was ported over to the LS970? Had to do some digging over at the dev side but found the thread.

Installed the Unofficial CM 10.2 ROM latest version as of yesterday) and it works pretty damn good. Although battery life seems to be a little weak. But then again, I ran Eco Mode on the Stock ROM. Still, my phone sits in a security locker all day at work and not really being used and as of this moment (3PM EST) battery is at 61%. Whereas on Stock with Eco Mode it would be around +85%.
Not sure what is considered standard battery drain not using Eco Mode. However, that will drop sharply in an hour and a half when I get off work and start actively using it again. I'll be interested in seeing how long it will last. Normally I can go the rest of the evening up until bed time on Stock ROM without having to plug it back in until I go to bed. Somehow I don't think it's going to make it that far while running on the CM ROM.
