I have the new JB stock rom installed (works great so far)
this problem was the SAME on the stock ICS rom.
my wallpapers will not load properly on the phone. it keeps "blowing them up" so they look fupgly
now they load right on the lock screen and load right when I pick vertical mode but I want the picture to "slide" when I slide screens.
when I select that mode it "blows them up" and they look hinky,
how do I stop it from doing that. I made them 1440x1280 but it still blows them up. I am trying to get screen captures but that stinking palm swipe motion crap simply does not work. in 30 or 40 tries I got ONE SINGLE random screen capture.
Here is a video showing the issue. its processing might need a couple minutes to be viewable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWJydcj0F3Q
on my S2 walls load just fine no issues.
update. its also significantly lower "quality"
on my S2 the images is much much sharper. on her right cheek I can see the water droplets on the S2 but on the S3 its "muddy" so its cropping AND distorting. almost like its "loading at a lower than 720x1280 resolution and then "blowing it up" interpolating it.
kind of the point of a 720x1280 screen IS the ultra crisp nature of such a screen. VERY annoying I hope a fix can be found for this
Well first another way to take a screen shot is power+ home button.
And I'm using nova prime so idk if this is a stock option, also I'm on on freegs3.
From the gallery app, choose what picture you want.

You have freedom what size you want.
Not sure if it'll work for you, but it works for me.

negative power + home does not work. thats the first thing I tried. power first them home nothing home first then power nothing. hold them both a few seconds nothing.
home is the physical button in the middle correct?
I have the wallpaper correctly sized but it looks almost 99% sure like its "downlscaling" the wallpaper and then "blowing it up"
instead of using the native pixels of the selected wallpaper.
I also switched to nova to see if that would help (no change for wallpaper)
my screen lacks that last option to "set wallpaper" I have the others but not that last one
I have to pick home screen or home and lock screen and it looks nothing like what you have
I start here
then I bring up SET AS and I get this
and so I pick home OR home and lock and I get this
because of the time it takes I THINK its actually SHRINKING the image to some "smaller" size and then stretching it to fill the desktop
I think this is why it looks "muddy"
to give you a better picture here is my desktop on the S2
note the image quality and sharpness
now here is the desktop on my S3 note its a HIGHER resolution image than the one on the S2 (which is 480x800) I went back to my original 1650 stock image and made a fresh one for the S3 so its NOT the S2 screen "blown up"

The screen shot is def. Power+ home button which is middle button. If that doesn't work then you have a rom issue, it works ok ics tw roms.
Is that more what your looking for?

edit: Sorry, Seems this only works with Zeam Launcher at the moment
and you need the option checked in preferences/workspace to manage
wallpapers internally.
If you want to create a wallpaper in photoshop for your 101,
so that the whole of your image is shown in landscape mode.
(without using multipicture or similar).
All android phones etc take the width of the screen in pixels when it is in
portrait mode and double it (to allow for the paralax scrolling effect you
get when you flip through your homescreens). The height is just the screen
height in pixels.
So on the 101 this is 1200 pixels (2 x 600 pixels) by 1024 pixels.
However, as the tablets are normally viewed in landscape and not portrait
like a phone, this isnt very good.
For some reason Archos havent accounted for this, that is why, even though
you select the whole (or part) of your chosen wallpaper with the 'crop' tool
when applying a wallpaper, It never shows all of your picture.
I have been playing around with a few tests and have worked out the exact dimensions
in pixels of the portion that is actually shown on your 1200x1024 pixel homescreen.
if you follow the instructions below, you can show all the chosen image on the
homescreen:
1. open your chosen image
2. select the crop tool and set it to a fixed size of 978 x 570 pixels and 72 dpi
3. crop your image
4. choose your background colour with the eyedropper tool (it wont be seen when
applied, I used black though)
5. go to edit, canvas size, and set the reference point to the centre so that it adds
canvas all around the image
6. set the new canvas size to 1200 x 1024 pixels, click ok
7. save the image as a jpg
You will now have your wallpaper. Tranfer it to your archos via usb and apply the wallpaper.
Hope you find that useful
mine looks like this before you apply it.

Nicely done. It'll come in handy.
I assume that the image has a black border above and below when viewed in portrait?
Also, that's a nice background. I think I shall yoink it
your welcome.
yes it does unfortunately, but I hardly ever put mine in portrait when using the homescreens.
Hey, I tried your image, but it didn't work for me. It shows a black bar in landscape along the top.
I notice the the image dimensions are 1023x873. I know it's asking a lot, but would you be able to upload the image as an attachment rather than an image? I don't wanna go editing an already edited image. Photocopy of a photocopy as such. I know I won't be able to crop it perfectly. No Photoshop installed on my work computer.
Thanks!
odd, maybe its because im using zeam launcher, I havent tried it in the stock launcher yet, I'll take a look tonight.

I'll work on it.
Seems as if you have found one way.... but there is another....
Im using very large images around 2500 x 1400 or so, then resizing them to around 1200 x 650 (somewhere in that area so that the image doesnt stretch).
I also sharpen the image alittle too much to give a better resolution effect.
I then use the multipicturelivewallpaper app to apply the image as the default wallpaper using the "show entire image" option.
Im using adw EX with the wallpaper scrolling OFF.
In landscape it works perfect, vertically is not too bad but obviously you cannot see the left and right farthest sides of the image. There are not black bars to be seen though.. The only time i ever turn the a101 vertical is when reading and ebook...which is never..
There is a theme thread here is your interested. I have also posted over 100 wallpapers pack that you can download. I have already resized them and listed a download link the the mplw.apk.
example....
thanks.
I was trying to find a way that meant not having to use a live wallpaper (which multipicture is) or additional app to get it working, but I really appreciate the link.
by the way, your dropbox link seems to be broken though, I cant get the wallpaper pack.

I've got this wallpaper from DeviantART in a zipped file in various sizes. I've tried cropping it down to about 480x800, but the phone's selection box when setting the image as a wallpaper doesn't allow me to select the whole picture, which seems silly since that is the phone's screen resolution.
I imported the full image to my phone and set the selection box to cover her entirety, but now the phone sets the middle default screen (out of three) to look like the second image below, and going to the left screen scrolls the background to look like the first image, which is essentially perfect; setting the launcher so the background doesn't scroll causes the picture to look like the second image.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out how I am supposed to get my background to look like the first image, when set to not scroll. Any insight?

That came to mind (and would probably work), but I have absolutely no knowledge of graphics manipulation, so I wouldn't be able to continue the background gradient off to the left.
What do you mean continue the gradient? Just take the image you have and cut it down so it's got a 3:5 (0.6) aspect ratio and then add some empty white blocks to the side
I had to crop it and stretch it (because of the bar at the bottom) but there's an example
If it's set to not move when you switch home screens, nobody will see the white bars on the side
Try that and if it works post the original image and someone can make a higher res version

Oh durr... that makes a lot of sense. I was in the mindset that the background would be stretched out for whatever reason.
That actually worked really well; there's an ever-so-small sliver of white on the left side, but that'll go away with some tweaking. What's the easiest way to crop and add the white bars with specific dimensions? I have access to Photoshop CS5, but I couldn't find anything beyond resizing and simply cropping and hoping I get the dimensions correct.
I actually linked the original 1920x1200 image in the first post, hyperlinked on the second word. Here it is again: http://i.imgur.com/GvEgU.jpg
EDIT: Never mind! I figured it out. I noticed the parameters next to the crop bar. Photoshop is fantastic... thanks for your help Looie. Now, just gotta figure out how to remove the white strip.

I think that was due to my saving as a jpg. I did it as a PNG and the background is a smooth gradient like it should be.
The only thing I'm unhappy about is that, for the times that I'm at my homescreen with the keyboard open and the screen in landscape mode, the white bars are obnoxious and up-in-my-face. I don't think I really have a workaround for it unless I find someone more skilled at Photoshop that can continue the background on either side.

If you want to sett an wall from the gallery..Its way to big if its 960x854..So can anyone tell me what size to choose for the pics to be senterd in "non scrolling wall" setting?I want 1 pic that stays sentered in the screens..Hope anyone knows.
that would be 960 divided by 3.... since SE's home launcher by default has 3 screens...
320 x 854
It should be 480x854 I guess since it's the dimensions of the lockscreen wallies.
Even if you're using a launcher that doesn't scroll the wallpaper, the wallpaper still needs to be 960x854.
All that happens is it displays the middle 50% of it.

Well, depends which launcher he's using.
But even if he uses one that lets you disable wallpaper scrolling, he'd still need to do as I say - the wallpaper has to be twice the resolution of the screen, that's just how Android works.
After trying cuite a bit i finally found that With:320 Heigth: 284 gives me the best result..This gives me a STATIC setered wall that is NONE scollable..
Both on the orginal Xperia arc launcher and on the Adw Ex(this one is my personal fav) this resolution gives a sentered pic.Ofcource this scrolles in orginal but not in adw ex..
So to answer my own question:
The Wallpaper size that makes a Static sentered wall is: With:320 Heigth: 284

Well..I really dont oundterstand what youre saying now...If i take a pic in Resluition 960 x 854 with an model standing in the way right of the pic, then i sett this as an wallpaper and turn of scrolling in Adw ex.
Then this problem comes forward: The pic is showing the middle 50% so the model is cut in half..or even is all the way out of the area shown..
With the pic in Resulution With:320 Heigth:284 and the same pic with the model in the way right then the pic on my NONE scrolling wall will be showed like its supose to...Acutually standing in the way right..
Gimme a couple of minutes and ill up some pics showing what i mean.
Ok..Here is the pics showing you what i mean:

Wallpaper in resolution With: 320 Heigth:284:
Hopefully this makes things clear? And that someone else finds this helpfull.
Well, the fact is, that if the wallpaper scrolls in the SE launcher, then it means that that resolution doesn't magically disable scrolling.
No resolution magically prevents the wallpaper from scrolling, that's just not how Android works.
The only reason that it doesn't scroll on certain launchers is that they override the default behaviour.
But they can only override the behaviour, they can't the fact that the OS requires the wallpaper to be twice the width of the screen, which is why the can only display the middle 50% of the image.
Take this image - it's 960x854.
If you use that with the SE launcher, the middle page of the homescreen will be all red but as you scroll to the side, green will appear. If you use it with ADW, LauncherPr or similar (and have wallpaper scrolling disabled), all you'll ever see id red - unless you flip the orientation to landscape.
So as I say, it's nothing to do with the resolution of the image, it's just the way that Android works.
Believe me, it took me a long time to work all this out for myself - I created images very similar to the one I linked to to allow myself to work out what shows up where on the homescreen.
edit: how about you upload your 320x284 image so someone else can have a look at it.
Well if you have ounderstoud me in the way that I sayd that this wallpaper resolution stops scrolling then Ive expressed myself badly..Ive all the time ment that I wanted the resolution that centers the pic in an launcher wich disables the wallpaper scrolling.
And the Resolution that in adw ex laucher with wallpaper scrolling disabeled centers the pic and showes the intyer pic you want is With: 320 Heigth:284.
But in Xperia Arc Launcher a wallpaper with this resolution will scroll.
It's zwc
It's Wzc up
I know, a real stupid question here... with the large SG3 display, how in the H*#@
can you set a wallpaper without it cropping the damn thing, ANY IDEAS would be seriously helpful.
Grab Wallpaper Wizardrii from the market
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twistedapps.wallpaperwizardrii&hl=en
Select your wallpaper using that app and choose the scale option. That's the only way I've had it work
Also, the picspeed wallpaper app works well. Just need to select the image in your gallery, choose set as wallpaper, and the use the app to crop it or not crop it as you see fit.
You can try multipicture live wallpaper from the market.
It will show the wallpaper full without cropping.
You can also try picspeed and use the option "use original" when setting wallpaper.

Samsung's stock launcher does not support scrolling wallpapers. you need to use a third party launcher like nova or apex.
You can check out my workshop if you wsnt a custom wallpaper
I was having this same problem. Here is how I fixed it. I did use Wallpaper Wizardrii. But, you have to make sure you have a very high resolution image. If your image is low res, it won't work. I chose the image, then chose "crop scale". It opens with a square over your image. If you want your image to fill the screen top to bottom, keep the aspect ratio of that square when cropping. You can keep the aspect by stretching only from a corner, and not one of the sides. It's okay if you change the aspect ratio a little, but the more you do, the more you will start to see black bars on top and bottom. If you aren't worried about a little space on top and bottom, just choose scale. Depending on the aspect ratio of your image, it may fill the screen just fine. If your image is true HD, then it is 16:9 and it will have bars. But if it's closer to 4:3, just choosing "scale" should work. Just remember if it's really low res, you likely won't see the scrolling effect.
Hope this helps. If it did, hit thanks.

This may be true. I was using Go Launcher.
I'm not worried about scrolling wallpapers. Just trying to get wallpapers to fit on the screen without being enlarged and cropped.

Here's another example:
This is such a great phone! I'm continued to be surprised by little features here and there.
Here are some of my favorite surprises that I've recently discovered.
(*) Pressing the home button three times, will reduce the size of the display. Similar to the reachability feature on iPhone.
(*) The calendar icon actually shows the current date. And, the clock icon actually shows the current time. Love how Samsung is paying attention to these little details.

I get nothing but my camera when I attempt 3 home button presses. Camera is known to open with 2 home presses

Don't need to wait for Marshmallow, this phone already got "Do Not Disturb."
When taking selfie, touch heart rate sensor in the back can also snap picture.
oh it works.. tks.
The current date and clock doesn´t shows for me? I did on my Note 4 if I´m not mistaken......
You dont need to touch the camera sensor. Tap in the screen anywhere in selfie mode and it will snap a shot
Here's another one. .. in camera selfie mode just say "cheese" or "smile" ?

Or "shoot"!
Also, if the phone is face down you can ignore calls and respond with a canned sms by pressing on the fingerprint sensor.

It only shows it the stock theme. If you theme the phone with a different theme from the theme store it doesn't show any more.
In selfie mode if you wave at the camera, it recognizes your hand then shows a 3 second countdown before taking the shot. (You need to enable this in the camera settings)

Thanks! I also noted that using Nova it doesn´t work. But it´s not a big deal
Seems like you can also get the floating apps like you can do on the Note series, simply launch an app like youtube, then swipe from the top corner to the middle, and there you have it, a floating app.
Great thread, stuff I wouldn't have found for years on my own!
Instead of the 3 home button tap for one handed mode you can reduce any app to be floating by dragging from the top very left or right of the screen down. Not from the top edge but the top of the screen if that makes sense.

This only works with certain Samsung apps (like the calculator)
