Phone completely messed up - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I rooted my brother's epic a while back and everything went fine. Afterwards, he flashed TWRP and ended up running an AOKP rom. He has since gotten a new phone and was supposed to give this to my other brother but he couldn't get it back to stock and unroot it in order to do so. So now I am trying to fix it and have been trying all day. He has a CWM backup of stock but I can't get CWM loaded up (tried flashing it in TWRP and with ROM manager). So I thought I'd try to just factory restore it with odin but i can't get it into download mode (holding 1 and power button boots it normally, holding vol down and power causes a bootloop until i stop holding it down). I've tried every TWRP backup he has and the problem is the same all around. Also, TWRP freezes when trying to flash a different ROM as well. The phone is running aokp_epicmtd_build-40 and because I can't get it into download mode I can't run the pit file to reset the partition. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have searched everywhere all day.

So just to make things clear.
*The phone is running aokp, is it possible to boot up the phone? Does it actually work tho?
*you can get into twrp but can't flash or restore anything cuz it freezes?
*you can't get into download mode at all?

Yes the phone boots fine in to aokp and everything works fine. I can get into twrp but when i flash or restore it freezes. No download mode what so ever.
EDIT: sorry, restore works fine but none of the backups fix anything.

Didn't u say there's a backup of stock? It doesn't work? Maybe cuz they were made using cwm?
Have u flashed the restore-cwm.zip to try and get cwm or what did u do exactly?

There is a CWM backup of stock (i know because i made it) but i can't get it back to CWM. And the restore-cwm.zip won't flash.

I'm not sure why that won't work but have u tried redownloading the restore cwm zip? U should try that.
And have u tried to get to download mode while ur phone is on? There's a cwm.apk that is in the thunderhawk rom that has that option and it works on every rom I've ever flashed. I'm not sure where to get the app from but if u download the latest thunderhawk rom and extract it from it and install it that should work. Then try and reboot to download mode from that app and see if it works. If it does then just odin stock.

If you are trying to flash CWM.zip in TWRP, you have to uncheck the Inject TWRP box to get CWM to stick.

Need help

I have the TMobile Galaxy s3 rooted on most recent stock firmware. I installed a new font using rom toolbox after backing up firmware with TWRP, so it though. After installing the font I got a message telling me to reboot for changes to take effect. Reboot hangs at the glowing Samsung logo. I have rebooted in to recovery and it comes up with CWM recovery vice TWRP some how? I know I flashed TWRP through rom toolbox but it didn't take apparently. I did get a message that backup was successful. CWM will not recognize TWRP backup. I need a flashable zip for the correct TWRP recovery. Could someone please point me in the right direction for the TWRP recovery file or to get me out of this boot loop. Should I just flash the stock firmware?

When you install it and choose for the custom recovery it will open Odin and ull have I think 3 options for the T-Mobile s3 just choose the teamwinsrecory I think its the last one on the list and flash it thru Odin: ) hope it helps out

I was able to get the team win recovery but the backup I made did not show up there either. I guess I will have to flash the stock rom and start over again. I don't know what I did wrong, thought I had backed up with TWRP. Kinda weird how stock recovery comes back after a new one is flashed. If I reboot into recovery now I get stock after being able to access TWRP and rebooting. Next time I go in I am back in stock? Don't know I will have to find a fix after I get back to stock.

Stuck in a boot loop

Rooted Att Note 2. I changed my fonts using Rom Tools and now my phone just sits at the Samsung splash screen. I did factory reset in recovery, still no dice. The recovery install only let's my flash updates and no I don't have a Nandroid. Kinda ran outta of ideas.
when you say the recovery install only lets you flash updates do you mean your still using stock revocery or have you flashed custom recovery and just dont have a ROM?
If you have custom recovery Id try to flash this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984546 Its been tested and works on our system. Its not stock but should at least get ya up and running again until a true stock is posted and you can flash that.
search in forums for an Odin tar file to reload the stock ROM. GL & do a nandroid before doing anything next time.

not custom, thats the problem. I flashed twrp thru odin but it didnt take, even though it went thru
Try to flash cwm then and see if that takes. You'll need the Odin version of this file at the bottom of the OP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33955697

Just bought a ATT GN2... coming from SkyRocket... on the SR, I used to always use "Quick Boot" app to reboot, or reboot into CWM Recovery. When you reference "quick boot app", are you referring to this? When my GN2 arrives, want to be sure I avoid using "Quick Boot" app if it doesn't play well on the GN2 and JB. Thx.

no, didnot do it unfortunately yet...should i use toolkit to do a nandroid?......how to back up with stock recovery?(for next time)
Okay. . So flashed the stock firmware through odin... Then flashed cwm + root. ... reinstalled and set all my apps and settings', widgets back in place
Now it's time for back up using cwm..
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)
You can't make nandroid backup with stock recovery. You need something like CWM, for example. This is a good lesson for next time If you're gonna mess with your phone, better have a backup ready.

what is the difference in the nandroid backup by mskip's tool kit and that by CWM?..are they same?..
Yeah they should be the same, though I don't have experience with mskip toolkit, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

[Q] Did I soft-brick my GSIII?

I've searched relentlessly for a solution to this, but I haven't come up with anything, so it's time to ask for help.
I just used mskip's Galaxy S3 QCOM Toolkit v2.3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682) to flash CWM and root my GSIII. The recovery flashed successfully, using "recovery-cwm-lte-sgs3-v5.tar" included with the toolkit.
CWM recovery works. However, when I tried to boot the phone, I got the first Samsung splash screen, then the screen turned black, a second later the boot tune played (with no splash screen showing), and then... nothing. The blue notification light blinks infinitely, and the phone is unresponsive except for holding the power button down for 10 seconds, which restarts it, and the same thing happens again.
I can boot into CWM recovery, as well as download mode. I tried wiping the cache and doing a factory reset, which changed nothing. However, when I tried to flash a stock ROM (again using the toolkit), I got an "unsupport dev_type" error. I presume that USB debugging has been defaulted to disabled now from this, but maybe I'm wrong. In any case, I'm not sure where to go from here. I don't want to claim that I've bricked it yet, when I have both recovery and download, but I don't know what to do now.
Help?
EDIT: I'm sorry, I forgot basic information : I'm using a SGH-T999 (T-Mobile GSIII).
I would defiantly boot in to cwr and do a clean install on a diferent rom. Not a back up u made with cwr but a .zip rom... n u sgould b ok.. I would try jb smooth

Looks like the toolkit installed an older version of CWM. I flashed 6.0.1.2 via ODIN (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30806933) and then flashed CyanogenMod 10.0.0. Works great.
Thanks so much!

Relax bro. What recovery are you on? I always format system and everythings runs good. If you can't backup, odin back to stock. If you can get into download mode then you are good. Or you can try reflashing the ROM.

Yeah I think something happened with SD card. Try using odin. I'm pretty sure you're not bricked. I remember reading somewhere along time ago about something about formatting the system and causing problems idk though lol. Do you happen to have another sd card that you can use? Are you on CWM or TWRP. If on CWM, use odin to put TWRP and try again.

Ive been in this position a couple times myself unfortunately. I formated everything internal/external SD cards and system, which left me with no bootable rom and no backup to backup from. (awesome)! so what i did one of the times this happended was 1. downloaded a rom TWRP flashable of course. 2. Placed the rom on my USB thumbdrive. 3. i had a usb otg stick that i was able to mount with TWRP and flash. and was back in business!!
another time i did this i used another phone (you could use your computer too if you have an adapter) I downloaded the TWRP flashable rom on to the microsd card, Stuck the card back in my phone and flashed it that way. again back in business!
Then of course there is the above mentioned way to Odin back to the very beginning with stock. Hope this helps and you get it figured out. But it does sound like your phone is totally fine, just need to figure out how to wake her back up. LOL.
Returning everything back to stock via Odin is the answer to your woed. As long as you're able to get into download mode (do not confuse download mode with recovery), you're golden.
