Try holding vol up and down and plugging the USB cable in while connected to your pc. If that don't get you in download mode then your phone may be bricked.

Maybe a bit more info? Skyrocket roms are totally safe to flash and do not cause bricks... so what else did your brother do?

Search on eBay for t989 repair. There's a JTAG repair service you can send the phone to fix it for around $40

Nothing much; just the typical rom download and CWM flash of the rom after a TDJ Super Wipe. When he rebooted the phone, no response what so ever!
Think T-Mobile can help him?

How are you trying to access recovery? While the phone is turning on hold on to both volumne rockers, the Samsung logo pops up, let go. Unless there is more info, you should still be able to access recovery and download mode. Skyrocket roms, by themselves, will not brick a T989

Sounds bricked to me, if theres no life/vibration or anything.
send it to someone and jtag it and it should work

Maybe he broke the power button or the battery is dead and can't be charged? There's nothing you've done so far that should've resulted in a bricked phone unless your brother isn't telling you everything.

He must have done something wrong flashing then! Maybe a corrupt superwipe rom was downloaded; he was going from a gingerbread rom to jb. Oh well ...he has warranty left on it. Hopefully he can get an exchange
Thanks all for your help! Much appreciated!
find a repair center near you and ask if they have a riff box. if yes, ask them if they do JTag Ressurection. If you cant find one, google 'jtag ressurection' and look for a store called mtech service out in toronto. you can fedex them your phone and they do the repair for $50. i just hard bricked my tmo sgs2 and im sending mine out to them. my dumb ass decided to flash a .pit alongside a modem in odin. i did ALOT of research on this and they are the closest jtag repair shop to me in boston, mass. i couldnt even find a mail in center in the usa, unless you choose to go through samsung or tmobile.

Well I bought it as a Certified Pre-Owned, and I guess it was just bad from the beginning. It just rebooted on its own and went dead.

Keeptrying to reboot into recovery. Try various things. Like for example take the battery out and plug it into the charger and then try boot into recovery without the battery and just keep trying different things. It will go eventually.

I didn't think the phone ran without the battery, Hence the reason why it's been said not to try and flash a ROM without 25% battery.

So I wanted to flash the new DARKSIDE.UCLE2 rom and i had non-touch recovery. So I flash the TWRP 2.1.2 and I wipe everything then click reboot into recovery. I always do this in clockwork recovery and never have a problem. It reboots back to recovery. But with TWRP 2.1.2 it no responding. Since i wipe my system i can boot my phone. I try getting in download mode but can't do that either.

The only option is Physical Damage

If you brick your device due to something you did then it is not the carriers place to fix it. You can send it to samsung And have them fix it for a price.

Lmao....I figured a bad backup can only mean a bricked system, not a phone. You should be able to properly transfer your backup or flash a rom to get going again.

Yesterday, my gio was working totally normal, I was running the CM7 Apocalypse rom. It was acting kind of funny, so I decided to flash back to my stock rom. The flash seemed to go as expected, except now when I boot my phone, its a totally black screen. It plays the sound that it makes when it starts, so its doing something. There is also no recovery. I can get it into download mode, except no matter what rom i flash it still has the black screen. The backlight is on and the screen turns on for download mode, so there isn't anything wrong with the screen. Also, my phone is the GT-S5660M model from Bell. Help?
no matter what rom i flash it still has the black screen

I CAN get into download mode. I've tried to flash back to stock. I've also tried to flash CWM but none of it worked. I dont think its bricked because when I flashed the stock rom it played the sound it makes when it starts. The screen is just screwed up somehow.
A short search reveals this, apparently we've been there already:

Thats the weird thing, I've already done that a bunch of times and the black screen is still there. The screen isn't damaged or anything. It's like something is persisting across flashes.
Did you wipe before installing stock with Odin?
Which one you're trying to flash? S5660XXKTL_S5660DBTKT1_DBT?
