How to Make a recovery.tar.md5
This is a guide on how to make a .tar.md5 file to be flashed through Odin or Mobile Odin. These are good to have on hand. If you end up unrooting your phone but re root. Instead of using Odin to flash a CWM Recovery that's outdated you can make one yourself using this process, then flash it using Odin so you can boot into recovery and flash a Root from Recovery zip
I used this guide, I'll just try to expand it and make it a little more simpler for cygwin (Windows) users
1) Navigate to your cygwin directory (ex: C:\cygwin) and go to C:\YOUR_CYGWIN_DIRCECTORY\home\Owner\ and create a folder, name it to whatever you'd like (ex: recovery_odin)
2) Download your CWM recovery image and rename it to recovery.img. Place it in the folder you created in cygwin (for the rest of the guide I'll refeer to this folder as recovery_odin)
3) Double click on your cygwin.bat and type this:
Code:
cd recovery_odin
4) Enter the following commands:
Code:
$ tar -H ustar -c recovery.img > recovery.tar
$ md5sum -t recovery.tar >> recovery.tar
$ mv recovery.tar recovery.tar.md5
5) Inside your recovery_odin folder you'll find your recovery.tar.md5, flash that using Odin (PDA Slot). If you want full root acess you need to flash the Root from Recovery zip immediately after flashing your new recovery. So, in Odin prior to flashing your recovery.tar.img, make sure Auto Reboot option is not checked and you pull the battery out after your recovery successfully flashed so you can enter CWM Recovery and flash that zip (make sure the zip is on your Internal SD prior to flashing the recovery)
woOT!!! First again!
Used the adb method earlier on my own to push the CWM Touch recovery, worked as it should.

I suppose this will suffice, till I get my TWRP fix. <3 Thank you.
I used the mobile Odin method earlier today. Worked great!

I used method 5, I love Rom Manager.
But when backing up rom from rom manager,
it goes to recovery and starts and quickly aborts with error.
It will not do a nandroid, I tried many times.
But if I do a backup directly from recovery clockwork it works
fine other than names with the year 1970. Why doesn't Rom Manager
work, and I have latest version and installed sprint GS3 right from it.
Nice conflation of goodies on this thread
CM9'rs running off Epic CM Team's temp kexec 'dual-boot / red Fake CWM' have been advised NOT to use ROM Manager (ie, to obtain CWM Touch or Nightly updates etc.)......... could bode badly.

yea grab the zip file in the second post and flash it. I've read some ppl having issues with it not sticking after a reboot so I would recommend either using adb or mobile odin, both of those have worked for me. I personally haven't used the zip's CWM published
In fact I removed the links to the CWM zips. I haven't tested those so I can't vouch for them
Use the CWM Images (direct Links in post#2), or use the .tar.md5 file I provided in Method 4 and use those.

The zips "work" but they do not "stick"....the IMG file does make recovery stick though...just my 2 cents...
O.k my wife got an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 when they first came out I bought it for her and it has this rom build on it l747UCALG1 and mine which I just bought about three days ago have this build on it l747UCALH9. Her build I was able to root if need be but my phone I can't and I am already on 2 count of the custom binary and I can't reset it since some how I can't root the phone the developers are seeing all of this stuff that we are doing to the phones and I believe they are trying to stop us. But anyway can some one tell me since I have a copy of her stock Firmware how can I just flash my phone or what have you with her stock firmware which is l747UCALG1 so I can root my phone. Also if you don't mind please leave me a clear step-by-step way to do it and if it works without doing any damage at all to my phone, and if I want to later go back to the stock that is on my phone now I can but I don't think I will unless I have to send or take it in ever for warranty repair or just sale it. If this works right leave me your e-mail or if you have a paypal account give me that address or what have you and I will send you a donation.. (Thanks)
Sincerely,

How to Revert to Old Firmware & Root Newest Release -
Hello and welcome to XDA.
I understand your concern to root your device especially with it being on the latest firmware, but I will do my best in order to explain every step to you in the utmost detail. I am currently on I747UCLH9 with a Custom ROM. Meaning I kept the Modem & Bootloader and kicked the Kernel and Firmware. Before I begin, I would like to ask you to thank to all the Developers / Posters who made & put this content together as this would not be possible without them. I will link all of their original posts at the end of this. Be sure to give credit to every one of them and please make sure to give thanks to them. I take absolutely NO CREDIT for any of these links/steps whatsoever. I simply researched and compiled them in order to help you. With that being said, let us begin.
Before anything you must remember this. After you are finished downloading whatever items you need, you MUST (and I cannot stress this enough) FACTORY RESET YOUR DEVICE. Reason being is because a lot of other people have tried this same process of downgrading without wiping and ended up getting startup boot errors. Be sure to NOT sign into your Google account. This is just a warning, follow the steps below to know when you should begin this process.
All files you download should be saved on your desktop. Personally I prefer to make a separate folder for these kind of delicate things. Keeps it organized so you don't forget where you are.
Make sure your phone IS NOT plugged in to your computer as of right now & you have NO external SD card.
Now;
Let's begin.
Before you start be sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed. Which you can get from Samsung's website or here.
Samsung USB Drivers
Also be sure that you have WinRAR installed as well which you can get right here.
WinRAR
To be on the VERY SAFE side you must download ADB (Android SDK). What you must do is when it asks you for where you would like to install it, you MUST ONLY CLICK "Local Disk C:" . AND THATS IT. The best thing is to keep it here so when you have to execute a command line, it will be very simple. You will have a folder called "android" here. THAT IS YOUR ADB FOLDER. You will understand what I mean shortly. *Note* this is for CWM-T (ClockworkMod Touch).
Android SDK
1. Download the stock rooted LG1 Firmware. I747UCLG1 Stock + Root Only.
2. Right-Click the LG1 Firmware you just downloaded and extract it. It is currently root69.stock_ATT_I747UCALG1.7z ; the extraction process will turn it into the correct .tar file (Flashable file type with Odin)
3. Now that you have the Stock ROM, you need..well ODIN! Here's the link. Odin 3.07.
4. Since it is in .zip format you need to extract this as well. You will end up with 4 files. Right-Click on the Odin3 v3.07.exe and run it as administrator. Now you are at the Odin screen with nothing there -_-".
5. Factory reset your phone. Just let it boot up but DO NOT sign into your Google account, just click through skip everything head straight to your Settings, then Developer Options & make sure USB Debugging is enabled/checked. Back out of your settings completely and you are at the home screen.
6. Now, just hit the power button and turn your device off. After it is completely turned off hold the Volume Down + Home button. While holding these 2. Press and hold the Power button. You should now be holding all three buttons at the same time waiting for a green lettered screen to come on (Download Mode). Use the phone keys to select the option to continue. Your phone will now say Downloading, do not turn off device. (Or along those lines).
7. After selecting the option that sends your phone to the screen with the text "Downloading, Do not turn off device." You should be holding your phone in hand with USB plugged into your computer but your device is not connected. Odin is open on your computer screen with nothing still. From here just plug your phone in and you will see a pop-up in the first box of many under the Odin logo which says "COM: #".(#: Being a select number of your device. This is of no importance, as long as you see this pop up.) Once you see this your phone will be ready to be flashed back. Just click the PDA button and browse to the root69.stock_ATT_I747UCALG1.tar file. (Be sure you click the .tar and not the .zip.)
8. Check to make sure no other boxes should be checked except for Auto-Reboot.
9. Press Start and wait for the process to finish.
10. Everything should go through fine and your phone will start back up and you will be on LG1. You are now on stock firmware BUT rooted. Unplug your phone, Skip past everything once again and make sure USB Debugging is enabled. Keep your phone unplugged & don't forget to close ODIN.
Now before you do anything. You need a Custom Recovery AKA CWM. Well in this case we will be installing the latest touch version.
11. Download the latest ClockworkMod Touch from here. This link is saved in a way specifically from their website. You can either go to www.clockworkmod.com and browse the ROM Manager tab for the 6.0.1.4 Recovery. OR you can just right click the link provided right here and press "Save As..." this file will come up and asked to be saved as recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.4-d2att.img. RENAME IT AS "recovery.img" without the quotes & save it.
ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.1.4
12. Now that you have this file. Plug in your phone to your computer and in the root folder of your phone storage and copy the recovery.img file to it; which is the first folder that pops up when you press open when you plug your phone in. (Remember no SD CARDS!)
13. Now, click the Start button on your taskbar and in the search bar type cmd. Now you will see cmd.exe; press enter and you will see the Command Prompt open. If you saved the Android SDK the way I told you to, you can copy and paste the line below. If you saved it somewhere else you can change the folder simply by browsing to the android folder. Make sure you click on the "platform-tools" folder. NOT the "platform" folder. Also whichever directory it is you must add a "\" at the end so it will find the location correctly.
cd C:\android\platform-tools\
14. Now you are in the directory time to run ADB Shell and flash that recovery! Copy and paste or type the following; I recommend you copy and paste the last line as it gets tricky. After the SU command your phone will be detected.
First you type adb shell
following that su
and finally dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
As you can see in the last command it is named recovery.img there are no special characters or numbers or symbols to mess with the flashing. After you run this command you will an output similar to the following.
14004+0 records in
14004+0 records out
7170048 bytes transferred in 1.430 secs (5014019 bytes/sec)
Finish up this step with the following command
reboot recovery
15. Your device will now restart and head straight into recovery. Congrats you now have LG1 Stock + Root with CWM-T. Unplug the USB and press "Reboot System".
TO UPGRADE BACK TO LH9 WITH ROOT AND CWM-T
Before I begin.
You must remember that this step REQUIRES you download 4 files to go on the root of your phone memory. Your phone should now be on the home screen. Plug it in and open your phone memory. With that being said you need the following files. The Rom, Modem, Bootloader, and Kernel. You will be flashing them in this following order as well.
16. Download the following pieces and save them to the root of your phone's memory. Be sure to remember which file has what name so when you enter the recovery you aren't lost as to which to flash first.
I747UCLH9 ROM Download
I747UCLH9 Modem Download
I747UCLH9 Bootloader Download
I747UCLH9 Kernel Download
17. After everything has finished transferring, remove the phone from the computer and turn your phone. Remember how you got into download mode? Well instead of holding Volume Down + Home, you hold Volume Up + Home. While holding these two press and hold your power button until you see it says Samsung Galaxy S III. If you look at the top left hand of the screen while it's JUST turning on. You will see some blue text flash. When you see that you know your entering the recovery and can release the buttons.
18. You are back at the recovery. You must now do the following. Touch the options as I list them. Follow these steps precisely.
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Yes -- Delete all user data
- Wipe Cache
- Yes - Wipe Cache
- Advanced
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
+++++Go Back+++++
- Install Zip from SD Card
- Choose zip from SD Card
Now choose them in the following order, ROM, Modem, Bootloader, and finally Kernel.
WAIIIITTTTTTTT! After you are finished flashing the Kernel you MUST do the following. Click options as I state them.
- Wipe Cache
- Yes - Wipe Cache
- Advanced
- Wipe Dalvik Cache
- Advanced
- Fix Permissions
+++++Go Back+++++
Reboot System
19. Wait for your phone to reboot and NOW you can sign into your Google account. Go past everything go into your App drawer first and check for Superuser/SuperSU once you see that, go into your settings and check your ROM, Modem, Bootloader, Kernel. Yes. They are bone stock with root. Congrats you achieved maximum upgrade with root.
Now I would like to give my shout-outs; Thanks; and share the following posts that helped me compile this. I couldn't have done it without you guys.

I will fix the links but if you simply look at the people / threads I have given credit to at the bottom of my guide you will see drothenberger's thread. He has the original links there. Mind you, you MUST scroll down to the part where it says "PIECES:" and download following his links. Don't worry I will re-post them accordingly.

Does upgrading from rooted LH9 from a rooted LG1 trip flash counter since we are installing 4 separate files instead of 1 .tar?
thanks!
If I'm creating a duplicate post, I apologize. However, I am trying to find a zip of CWM Touch 6.0.2.3.
As I am creating this post, I see that there may be a recovery in other forums. Is the recovery the same across all devices? I just want to make sure I get the right one for my S3.
Thank you,
The one and only GBP.
Just made these .zips...
CWM 6.0.2.3 (SGS3 T-Mobile)
CWM 6.0.2.3 Touch (SGS3 T-Mobile)
Flash either of them in Recovery Mode.
CWM SITE
Thank you, I really appreciate your help.
So I know how to do that the next time, how did you create the zip file? When I was at the CWM site, all I could download was an IMG file.
Try using twrp its nice and user friendly if you want an alternative touch based recovery just download goo manager from the play store and give it a try can't hurt

HOW to create a .zip (flashable rom when new version comes out)
1. Started with older CWM .zip ROM that I knew worked in past...
2. Download Newest CWM Recovery .img file from CWM SITE...
3. Extract older CWM .zip and rename to newest Version number... example "Recovery_CWM_v6.0.2.3"
4. rename newest CWM recovery .img to "recovery.img" and copy to your extracted folder. (Write over older version)
5. Re-compress with WinRAR or 7-Zip and make sure it's .ZIP format, not .RAR or another type.
6. All done
*** All your doing is taking recovery image and updateing into newly created .zip
*** in flash mode, the Recovery option to INSTALL (or flash any zip) always reads META-INF\com\google\android\"updater-script"
the script it reads for this example is...
ui_print("Please Wait");
ui_print("Flashing recovery");
show_progress(0.200000, 10);
package_extract_file("recovery.img", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p18");
show_progress(0.100000, 0);
ui_print("Success!!!");
so you can see it 's just gonna put "recovery.img" in your "mmcblk0p18" Partition which we can see is the recovery partition.
there are many partitions like System, Data, Flexrom, Cache, Dvalk Cache, SD Card, etc...they all have same start with different ending numbers mmcblk0p18
I agree with dscott973, that TWRP v2.3.3.1 is the best RECOVERY ! I'd change to that one (my opinion)
You can do the same thing by puting TWRP image renamed to "recovery.img" in the same format as this thread example (and rename folder accordingly),
but very important, always make sure your using the same type. Make sure your using for Samsung Galaxy S3 (TMobile type).
Example : Don't mix Verizon or AT&T type (just know what your doing and label it correctly)

ok. new noob here. so i have downloaded the file to root and install cwm on my gs3 from rootgalaxys3.com. the cwm in it won't allow me to flash a new rom. 'assert failed' is the only thing that keeps showing up. i looked into it and i think i have to upgrade my cwm version. so i found this link to the touch version for the galaxy s3. after i download it and i go to throw it in to the PDA slot in odin. its not there. so i extract it and i find 'meta-inf' file and a "recover.img" i can end up putting that in to the pda slot. BUT it ends in .img... is this ok or does the file have to end in .tar to flash properly and work?

The 2 files I posted earlier here are for FLASHING in RECOVERY only, not made for ODIN install.
another separate way to install Recovery is...
A) Download app from Market called "Terminal Emulator" (it's like using ADB commands on cell phone instead of PC).
B) use the same "recovery.img" from either of my 2 Zips earlier posted and then copied it to External SDCard (name of .img file has to match same name as in text below)
C) Run Terminal Emulator and enter these 2 command lines (Cell has to be ROOTED for su permissions to work)
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
D) Check to make sure you have Recovery.
-with cell being off, Use {Volume Down, Home, Power} to load up recovery and check it.
To directly answer the question, you can only flash .tar files with Odin.

Don't you mean Volume Up, Home, Power for Recovery?
Can someone reload these links? I need them badly thanks
Alright, so i have a Galaxy s3 (sgh-i747) and i rooted it with philz bootloader
So i was going to install a custom rom, so i had to wipe.
I downloaded the rom, and wiped.
But then i realized i actually never put the ****ing rom on the phone and now my phone has no rom loaded.
I can still boot into download/recovery
I really need help with this, what are my option?
So my phone is not rooted any more i guess because the recovery/bootloader is the default one
I still really need help with this

Do you remember what (stock) firmware or Android version you were on before the attempted installation? Your best option now would be a return to stock. If you were on anything earlier than 4.3 (e.g. 4.1.2 or 4.1.1) you could try using Odin to flash 4.1.1 since you can get into download mode. To do this take the following steps ..
1. Download the required files via the following link <http://fortedge.com/downgrade.html>and extract the Odin flashable file
2. Install Odin
3. Boot into download mode and flash via Odin
OR you could find the correct stock image via the following discussion thread and flash via Odin. This would be a complete stock file that will flash all partitions including bootloader, modem, kernel and system.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
If you were on Android 4.3, then you cannot use the above method or flash via Odin and any attempt to do this will create more bother for you. In this case, you would need to flash custom recovery via Odin and restore the stock recovery image via custom recovery. Please download the stock recovery file via the following the thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2658486
If you need any further detailed steps on how to complete this, please do not hesitate to holler.

Download Odin.
http://fortedge.com/downloads/Odin307.zip
Download the Odin flashable custom recovery file via the following link ...
<http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2att>. You need one of the more recent images ending in *.tar e.g. the one below
<http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-d2att.tar>
Install Samsung Kies on your PC if you don't have this already (this will be useful for the drivers)
Install the twrp tar file to an easily remembered location on your PC
Extract the Odin zip to get the executable file (*.exe)
Click on the exe file to run Odin
Now boot your phone into download mode by powering off completely then holding down the Power + Home + Volume Down buttons simultaneously until you see a warning message.
Press the Volume Up button to continue
Connect your phone to the computer with a good quality micro-USB cable
If everything has been done OK, Odin should immediately recognize your phone and you should see a message saying "Added" in Odin. If you don't see this, then you may need to check the drivers are properly installed.
Click on the PDA tab in Odin and navigate to the twrp tar file you earlier downloaded. Select this file and click OK.
You should have the Auto-Reboot and F-Reset Time boxes checked in Odin. Please do not check or uncheck any other boxes!
Click on the Start button at the bottom to start flashing TWRP and wait until you see PASS and a green (or blue) box fully displayed. Your phone will automatically reboot after this although it may not be able to boot since you don't have an OS installed. You may disconnect the cable and close Odin after you see the PASS message. If you see FAIL, then disconnect, remove the phone battery and try again.
If you successfully flash TWRP, then you may proceed to reinstalling your ROM.
1. Download the zip file in the thread below <<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486>>
2. Save to a recognizable location on your phone's SD card. If you can't install files to your phone via your PC, then you may save to a micro SDHC card using another micro-SDHC compatible device (camera, another phone, card reader/writer etc).
3. Boot into recovery mode
4. Select Install from the TWRP menu and navigate to the zip file you download. Swipe the arrow key to confirm installation and wait for installation to be complete
5. When installation is complete, clear your cache and dalvik and reboot system and you are good to go.
Hope this works for you. If it does, please remember to hit the thanks button and let me know.

You may also try Odin 3 v1.85 if the v 3.07 didn't work. I've been looking for a safe download link for that online but I've not been able to find one. You may try searching for it online.

Here is Odin 1.85
Or you could try putting a room on an SD card. That's why I always check to see if a room is there before flashing

I have made this thread as a desperate attempt to minimize questions such as the one that follows. I have seen these questions clog up development threads and the responses are usually short and the user if extremely new to android, gets lost.
In making this guide, I have chosen to use the custom rom: CM-10 for Locked Bootloaders Rom shared by @optimumpro
I chose this rom due to the simple fact that the question was based from that thread AND because I myself use this rom.

backup suffice and how exactly do I install the rom?

The instructions as given are
1. Have JB latest Stock Kernel, Roger's Baseband in case of LT28i, Root and Recovery
2. Format System/Data/Cache in TWRP or Mount and Format the same in CWM
3. Install the ROM and Reboot. Nothing else is needed
here is the general breakdown if you are moving from Stock on XPERIA ION to in this example, the CM 10 rom for locked bootloaders.
------If from ICS, follow from step 1
------If from JB, follow from 1a
1)
1a)----Flash----
-You need flashtool (http://www.flashtool.net/index.php)
-You need the firmware (http://forum.xda-
developers.com/showthread.php?t=1752345)
You need to download the JB for Generic International Firmwares - LT28h and if you wish to have LTE for AT&T devices then
you must also download the latest JB for rogers (Rogers Stock Firmwares - LT28i)
First, Flash the Generic Ftf
(optional) For LTE, flash the Rogers Firmware with EVERYTHING excluded except for baseband
1b)----Root----
There are a few methods but personally I use:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Download the current version (happens to be v33 at the moment)
-Connect phone to computer with Android Debugging Enabled with Unknown Sources
-Run the required File and follow the instructions in the Command Prompt Window
--It will complete the required steps and upon reboot, you will have root access.
-Install Busybox after root
1c)----Recovery----
-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30149181#poststop
--Download RECOVERY for XperiaIon v.4.zip
-Connect phone with same requirements for root
--extract and run the .bat file->done
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE SPECIFIC ROM YOU WANT ALREADY ON YOUR INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL SD CARD BEFORE CONTINUING you have been warned
2) CWM MENU SELECTION
-Upon Reboot a BLUE LED should appear, immediately hold the volume DOWN key, CWM menu should appear
--Scroll using the volume and select using the power key--
-Go to Storage and as instructed by the CM 10 Rom I specified, wipe System/Data/Cache
For more information on the CWM menu breakdown visit:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...neral/ref-cwm-clockworkmode-menu-options-t1542857
------OPTIONAL BACKUP------
-If you would like to make a backup of your current rom, go to option 4 the Nandroid menu and select the Backup Option
3) INSTALL
Then go back to main menu, to go the INSTALL MENU
and select choose zip from (external/interenal (depends on where you stored the zip))
-navigate to zip location-> select-> yes-> install
-----wait patiently-----
Reboot
Done
I think you should talk about making data backup too. For a newbie, he may never know that he should first have a back up and how to go about it.
