Which custom kernel would you suggest?
I had tried PX-Kernel before, and I would like one that is most stable, and PX-Kernel (20120607) sometimes have problem gaining root access.
Thanks~
Px kernel or cf root

I had tried the Base Stock GB cf-root update 27062012 here: http://giocommunity.com/delanokernel.html
but it reboot randomly,
maybe I can try a older release,
which release do you use? thanks~
try this one
http://d-h.st/3f1
Thanks for reply so quickly, I will let you know the result,
For me adrenaline engine works and on stock karnel
Hmmm... I am having trouble doing it..
First I use superoneclick, but it stuck at the process and cannot root, I am using stock 2.3.6.
Then I try "DelanoKernel for Stock base 27062012", it cannot not let me flash, it said "cannot open (bad)" something like that, I tried older release but the problem remain.
Then I flash universal_gb_root_v25, but it is not compatible with PX-Kernel because they use different SU binary, so I cannot not use apps that require root access.
So now I just flash universal_gb_root_v25 + Adrenaline_Engine_4.3, but I don't know if it is fully working, also I lost overclock and smartassV2.
[Edit]: I uninstalled Adrenaline Engine and flash V6 supercharger, which can work without init.d support, and it's smoother now~
So my whole procedure is flash cwm, then root, then V6, then use root uninstaller. Its easy and good for long term use.

Do you still have a file named eu.chainfire.mobileodin.flashkernel.d710 in root on your sd card?

And tb says to check for busybox and my phone isnt rooted.. also su will load but im assuming my busybox or root is gone somehow..

It looks like you may have used the AOKP fd24 kernel which breaks root :\. I would try reflashing the el26cwm (with odin on your computer), booting into recovery and reflashing a3. There is a version of darch's fd24 kernel floating around some where that doesn't break root, but i've heard it may have other issues.

A couple of days ago I also lost root after flashing TCP's AOSP FD 24 kernel. I solved it by using ODIN (pda slot) on my PC to flash darchstar's FD24 kernel. Root was regained and my CM9 a3 otherwise still running smoothly.

Ok, I've flashed the Leaked ICS ROM and tried to root it several different ways.
First, I tried UnlockRoot. It does not work.
Next, I tried SuperOneClick. It didn't work for me. I have heard that it did for lots of other people.
Then, I tried TPSparkyRoot. It did successfully root my phone. But, when I reboot my phone after the process, I get the "Security Error" message and have to follow the Unbricking Guide to get my phone back to working order.
My question to the community is: Has anybody had this problem before and if so, does anybody have any better rooting methods?
The best rooting method is just to install the pre-rooted CWM-flashable ICS leak that HO!NO! put out. You're already doing hardcore stuff to your phone anyway, so next time you unbrick, just install RomManager and CWM and flash the .zip you want.
How is the CWM Flashable version on battery life?
It's the same thing as the ICS leak. I'd say relatively poor battery life, personally.
Use doomlords root method. Myself and many others have had great success with it where other methods failed .

Do you happen to have a link to a tutorial for Doomlord Root?
Also, I tried to install CWM and ended up bricking my phone again. Any suggestions on that?
EDIT: I found Doomlord v4... It didn't work for me.
I believe USB debugging must be checked and its also very important that you have allowed installation of non-market apps, otherwise the program cannot install super user...

Yup, I made sure those were both checked. No dice.
When I try to install CWM through ROM Manager, it bricks...
I figured it out! I had to make my own root script.
Here it is: LINK

Only because I'm not sure how to use this method, any idea if anyone is working on a super one click method or another easier method???
THanks
After I got my Galaxy S4, I immediately rooted it using CF-Auto-Root. I loved the rooted phone, but there were a few problems with the root permissions:
- SuperSU and all rootcheckers confirmed that I had root access
- ES File Manager would not let me use the Root Explorer feature, it ended with a "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your phone."
- A paid Root Explorer would let me modify the /system partition
- I could not start Complete Linux Installer, I got errors about permissions starting /root/init.sh
- "adb remount" did not work, even after "adb root". It did work when I used "adb shell" and then "su".
When I downloaded the kernel source from http://opensource.samsung.com/ to make some adjustments, the problems did not disappear. After doing some research, I found the cause: http://gs4.wonderhowto.com/inspirat...galaxy-s4-and-its-new-secured-kernel-0146787/ If you change the lines after ## Samsung rooting ... in .config in the kernel source from =y to =n and then build the kernel, you'll get a system with full root permissions.
For those of you who aren't into building kernels, the same task can easily be achieved by flashing a custom kernel after having flashed CF-Auto-Root. The Adam-kernel from wanamlite (http://wanamlite.com/2013/06/21/adam-kernel-galaxys4-lte-v1-4/) for example. I included a boot.img for flashing with mobile odin, it is a new kernel with only the root permissions fixed. Don't flash the attachment zip but extract it and then flash it with mobile odin, the .img was too large for me to upload. If you get stuck at the logo, reflash the stock firmware from http://sammobile.com/ via odin, you won't loose your files, and leave a comment.
I smell a new developer
nice tip :good:
Used mobile odin flash the boot.img ended can't turn on wifi. Other all worked. So flashed back adam 1.4 kernel.
Send via i9505 using XDA premium,
ROM: Pyrana mf8 1.7
Kernel: Adam 1.4, PHIL 5.06.0
superSU 1.34, 64G exFAT
If you set the lines in question like this:
# CONFIG_SEC_RESTRICT_ROOTING is not set
The status will be "permissive" and ES file explorer will work fine.

This is the newest kernel from http://opensource.samsung.com/ with the ramdisk extracted from the xxub firmware from Germany. The kernel shouldn't be firmware dependent though.
Hey!
I'm having some trouble even installing roms really... I used CF-Autoroot and it seems fine but when I try to install anything in either twrp or cwm it won't mount different folders and I get different kinds of permission messages!
Any idea what that could be?

I dont think the problems you experience flashing roms have anything to do with the kernel (because the kernel hasn't been loaded yet). When I flashed CyanogenMod on my S4 I had problems too with "set_perm" in custom recoveries, but trying to flash it over and over again solved it.

Yeah, keeping pushing it seemed to work for me as well (until I got it all ****ed up somehow later on) but I'm kind of looking for a solution because I can't believe it has to be the way to do it...
Can anyone explain why im unable to change superuser binaries on this device?
ive rooted and tried three separate methods
I've rooted stock with kingoapp.com
Used the root flash zip in the cwm thread
Used this pre-rooted rom
Every time I install a new superuser and reboot I lose root.
Then I have to re-root and everything works again.
Based of the fact that all three install the same su binary I'm assuming it has something to do with that.

Has anyone else tried to switch to another superuser app? like the clockwork one or anything?
Hi,
Is it possible to flash a custom rom without having the system rooted?
I use my tablet for my work enterprise email using Good and I know that this will not work on a ROM with root or system mounted in R/W. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
I think that root is necessary to flash a custom ROM, but if you can't use a rooted device you could always unroot immediately following installation of custom ROM.
Sent from my SM-T217S using xda app-developers app
Flash the custom rom then mostly super su will be installed then go to settings (super su), find full unroot, tap on it and you are done, you have a custom rom unrooted

all the roms I make is usually Stock Odex Not Rooted for this purpose, all anyone has to do is just install SuperSu and busybox... your rooted..
but all you have to do is just use rootexplorer and go into system/apps and just remove the supersu.. that should do the trick and just download the firmware and do over odin.
