Is it worth switching from an S3 to a note 2? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Basically I know it's a quad core but would I really see that huge of a difference to take a hit cost wise to upgrade?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Do you want the bigger screen? That is the only reason I'd think about switching.

I just got the s3 love it but I wanna know if I'm better of waiting for the note 2. And no screen size doesn't matter to me. Basically would it be a noticeable performance difference from my s4 chip to the quad? Would I actually notice a huge speed difference in games and in day to day use?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

If you do a lot of hardcore gaming on your phone probably but for day to day use not at all.

It all depends on your personal needs. S3 for my phone and an IPad for my tablet. My current wardrobe doesn't have enough pocket room for the note 2. No way in hell I'm going to put it in my back pocket either... CRUNCH! I'd also have to use a Bluetooth, holding that whopper phone to your face would be weird. The Quad core would be nice, however I will wait for the S4 for quad core. 1. Screen size 2. Quad core 3. How deep are your pockets
Sell your S3 on XDA or Amazon and buy it out right, forget going the contract route. Good luck and god bless!

Yeah it is a huge phone and I do already have a nexus 7. So maybe I am good with my current setup. Also am I correct in assuming the mod community is better with the s3 then with the note?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Note2 will be better for gaming because of GPU. And since it's international it will have more ROMs, devs, MODs etc.
Remember: there is always next big thing. SGS4 coming. Start saving. etc

So if you had to pick what would you go with?

The Note II's screen is not only bigger, but is much higher quality because it has the standard RGB subpixel layout as opposed to the PenTile layout on the SIII.
And the Note II's battery is a massive 3100 mAh, so it's like an SIII battery and a half.
But I've also heard that though the Exynos is faster, devs have had a hard time with it because of Samsung holding back information.
I mean it's really up to you to weigh the pros and cons. I personally wouldn't want to use a Note II as a primary phone; even with my big hands I feel it would be too much. I think the SIII is my upper limit for screen size.

Okay thanks everyone for the help. I to agree that even for me the note seems big. I guess I was just looking to see as a first time android buyer that I made the right choice for a first phone.

Sg3 is a great choice. Ive been contimplating new note 2 also.if it releases for at&t before my 30days up, I might return sg3 and get new note. I like the bigger screen. Plus I hsve the note 10.1 tablet. So they would go great together.
Either choice would be good.

Im getting right when its released

short answer: no.

I bought my S3 just as a holdover for the Note II (from the Note N7000). Personally the screen on the S3 is still too small for my taste. (Not saying I think its too small, its great, I just personally like bigger).
If you don't think you'll use the S-Pen, and you don't feel the need for a bigger screen, then swapping to the Note II is silly from an S3.

Yeah the only reason I was thinking about it was for the cpu. But from what I have ever been reading the s3 appears to be able to handle everything. Just want to make sure it will hold me over for at least a year (I upgrade at least once a year).

I was mulling upgrading my S3 to the Note2, but decided to hold out another year for the Note3, since it should be a bigger feature bump, with:
1) 1080p (720p hdmi output looks a little crappy upscaled to 1080p)
2) The new "unbreakable" flexible display tech
3) The new & faster samsung flashstorage, with 32/64/128GB internal as the new standard
4) 12MP camera
5) WiDi (wireless HDMI output so you don't need MHL)
6) A 5.65" display with a commensurate 0.1" reduction in bezel. (Made this one up )

Hold off on The Note II?

Basically, I am wondering if anyone is considering holding off on the Note II for something greater. Don't get me wrong, the Note II has fantastic specs; but all the breakthrough recently has made me wonder.
Samsung is starting to make their own mobile cameras, and is rumored to have a 13MP (I know MP isn't everything). This could mean drastic improvement on lenses and low light snapping. And now with recent news that Samsung has broke through with a DDR3 memory chip. Oppo also has a 5" 1080p, 445 PPI screen.
All this makes me think killer phones will be shown at CES, that aren't the typical improvements to annual versions. Anyone else going to hold off?

I think the note can hold its ground even with the 1080p displays and new quad core snap Dragon processors coming out. And if you want a 5.5 inch screen with s pen capabilities the note is the only way to go, and don't forget the huge 3100 mah battery that may rival the razr max battery life.
Sent from my Verizon Nexus
Will it make the Note 2 any less interesting ? The Note 2 has features (S pen) that a oppo 1080P screen with not replace.
otherwise I would be still with my ipad 3 with that retina display
I also want to try a bigger screen than my Galaxy nexus and see if I would be ok to stop using my nexus 7 as well.
big screen, a proper stylus, and separate keys.
i doubt any phone will have that until the note 3.
I think the note ii is perfect since they really focused on old technology and made it better, I'm talking about software, battery life, less bugs, and more development. If u hold of to a phone with new breakthrough technology the software, battery life, bugs, and development will be very low/bad. By the time your eligable for an upgrade all the breakthrough technology will be top notch running at its best capabilities

I know the adage about waiting in tech for the next big thing but I really feel the new exynos 5250 will be worth waiting for. My ideal phone would be the note3 with new exynos which of course won't be out for at least a year. I'm torn and might get the note2 anyways but I'm willing to be patient for now.

[Q] Need opinions on what to upgrade to

Hey fellow forum users,
I am debating whether I should upgrade to an S3, Note II or possibly wait for S4 from my Samsung Galaxy Captivate (Fantastic phone just feel it's time for an upgrade!) OR if there is any other phone worth upgrading to (LG Optimus G)
I'm leaning on getting the Note II but I would like your opinions and also the price is $100+ more than the S3 and I'm just wondering if the S-Pen, 0.7" of extra screen and a slightly faster processor (without rooting) is worth that $100.
*One thing to note, my hands are on the smaller size but I was able to handle the OG Note. I am using my phone almost 90% of the time 2-handed
My uses: Gaming, Messaging, Browsing, YouTube, Movies/TV Shows
I really like that the N2 has the S-Pen, it seems like a good tool to have but I am not sure how often I would use it.
I know that the S4 has absolutely NO details and that Samsung has downplayed a March release meaning it could be another half a year or so until I could get my hands on one.
I would definitely prefer the phone that wouldn't need another upgrade for another 1.5 years or 2.
Also, I'm on Rogers non-LTE if that matters. I'm thinking about getting either i9300 or N7100.
Thanks, if I need to add any more details on what I use the phone for let me know!

those uses call for a big screen, so Note 2 will be better than S3, and it also has a better chip and more memory.... but at the end of the day, it's only who can decide for yourself... good luckand enjoy whatever you choose...
If you wait for the S4 then youll end up waiting for the S5 and so on. There is always something newer around the corner. In my opinion if you can handle the size then go with the Note 2. Ive used the S3 and I just find the bigger screen much better on the Note 2.
I had the S3. The Note II is much nicer. It feels better in my hand, the keyboard typing is easier and faster for me, the bigger screen is so good for movies and youtube and games... It just feels like this phone is more useful and fun than the S3. It performs so well, and the battery is great! I am now a huge fan of the Note line of devices, the next phone I get will probably be the Note III. I doubt I will ever again get anything smaller.

Hahaha! Yea I was thinking it has a higher resolution but yet the battery is weaker than that of the GS3. So either you carry a charger with you all day or have a set of battery extension because its going to drain fast during usage.
Now I wouldn't think about trading my Note 2 for the DNA one bit because both phones pretty much have the same specs. The Note 2 at 720p is already rich in screen resolution. You'll have to stare at it from about half an inch away from the screen to notice the pixels. I'm pretty sure you'll see less pixels on the DNA while staring at the screen from the same distance, but who'll want to do that?. With the Note 2 you can also record videos and take pictures at the same time like the how the HTC always advertise on their phones. Nothing new about that. Now the only down side I see on the DNA is no stylus (many people who hates holding a pencil, let alone writing their name would not care for it at all), no expansion slot (I cannot rely on cloud storage as an alternative), the battery is weak and non-removable (so unlike the Note 2 it is not meant for heavy usage), and finally it's from Verizon (the carrier whom loves to brand the **** out of their phones).
But I don't like to tell people what to get. If any phone they find that suits them, then great and good luck with their new devices. We all win. :good:
EDIT: Forgot to mention that with LTE the DNA will suffer even more on its battery.

The only thing arguably better would be the display / resolution. Other than that, Note 2 owns all the way. At this point in time, I don't really care much for 1080p. For my next phone in about a year or two, thats a different story.

I checked out the Note2 again tonight this time only for about 15 min when I stopped by Best Buy & immediately felt like this is such a real huge upgrade from my EVO 4G that I must have it soon. Then I started noticing the whites weren't as white as my EVO & it could be brighter (set to max) & even experienced some lag but I did not have time to do a reboot.
I am curious to see the DDNA, 1080p natural color screen with amazing cameras like the OneX & improved speaker etc but obviously annoyed with battery & sdcard situtation (not a huge fan of all the red styling either but would slap a case on it) yet I will have to check it out. I think the OneX variants are the best "smartphone" display & camera & at 5" DDNA should be impressive (always thought 5" is a great size but the N2 managed its 5.55" amazingly as well & the stylus puts it in its own class).
So do the non-white whites & brightness of the screen around sunlight on the N2 ever bother anyone?

I will admit that the 440ppi and handling of colors is a huge notch against the n2.. the droid however is it a dealbreaker for me...No...does it hurt people who are truly craving that 1080p display and higher color reproduction...it might...Htc decisions to do certain designs and moves on there devices seem to be pushing people away already from what it seems...as well as the fact the series of their devices theyve released is starting to flow the "Apple way"..thats just coming from me though

6.3 inch screen? And even more functional SPen?
No doubt the SIV will be impressive, but I don't think I could ever buy a smaller device. 5 inches is small to me now.
My piggy bank is waiting.
I agree about the screen size. I'm so used to this that going smaller just doesn't make sense to me anymore. The specs on this phone is already amazing. I still have my gs3 that just sits there. Well in terms of size, I agree with you. I'm not adjusting to my Note II as well as I hoped - it's too big for me (one handed use and pocket). I'd prefer 130x70 mm phone with a 5" screen, perhaps with a pen, though I don't use it that much so far. But I'm not going to get an S4 - I'll wait for the next Nexus before considering a change. At least our phone (AT&T Note II) is rootable, but the fact that AOSP ROMs are handicapped by some hardware secrets (or so is my understanding) is too annoying to repeat a non-Nexus purchase. I hate the lack of SD card and battery too, but if I have to, I'll live with it next time (maybe in 2 years the internal storage will be large enough I won't care about the SD card).
Dara
My concern is that the GNII feels just big enough to make use of the spen, I don't feel like it would scale down to 5" size that well.
And like others I'm so 100% satisfied by this beast that I can't even imagine switching right now.

I love my note 2 and can not see myself with any other phone right now. I find it to be ahead of the curve and I can't think of what else they can do to improve it beside a bigger app selection "apps not games" but that's a developer issue. We need more devs to cater to us the note 2 users.

Getting an S IV would be a downgrade for most people who got the Note 2 for what it was intended to be used for. I haven't met many people who could go back to a smaller screen after owning a Note. For the people who are just spec whores and want the latest + greatest, I'm sure the S IV will be something they can't live without. But for those who want the large screen and all of the great things that come with it; the capabilities of the S Pen; and other features that won't be entirely eclipsed by the S IV... the Note 2 will continue to serve us well. I may be slightly jealous of a full-1080p HD screen and incremental hardware improvements, but other than that, I can easily wait for the Note 3 which of course will dance circles around the S IV. And what's up with the megapixels of these cameras getting insanely bigger and bigger? Just marketing hype tailored towards the ignorant. Most people equated more megapixels with better photo quality, having no idea it just means you'll be able to take insanely large pictures, for print media and displaying on large screens. Give me a great camera with DSLR-like quality. The extra megapixels can suck it!
Exynos + PowerVR = Drool
I'll be grabbing one if true

[Q] Just 2 steps from buying the Galaxy Note 2...

Hi,
I was about to buy the GS4 but I thought of the Note II
I'm impressed with this phablet
Just 2 questions about the note 2 to make sure it's a good choice for me.
1- There is a huge difference in hardware (CPU & GPU) between note 2 and the S4
But I saw that people don't have any lag even in latest hardcore games
Can the note 2 be good for a while or maybe in the near future it will be and old device & can't handle new games??
I mean the S4 got about 28000 vs 18000 on the note 2 on ANTUTU Bench.
I this points difference is for nothing?
2- The camera of the note 2... If I try to capture a written text on the blackboard about 7~10 meters far away from me... can I really get the a good picture?? (I mean in the college )
Or should I get the 13MP of the S4??
Hi and welcome!
1. The difference between Note 2 hardware and GS4 hardware is not so important as long as Note 2's hardware can provide enough power. And it does. Plenty. If you look to benchmarks for answers, you'll be disappointed to know that the synthetic benchmarks don't reflect real life usage, so the scores are more or less an indicator. Not to mention that the newer phones like GS4 have some tweaks in order to get higher scores in benchmarks. You can safely buy Note 2 from this point of view, it's powerful enough to play any game out there, plus it does it on a big beautiful screen and not eating all your battery while doing it.
2. The camera can take good pictures, for what you say you need, it's perfect. You may get bigger pictures from the GS4 due to it's lager sensor, but unless you shoot very small text or you need to print a banner from it, you won't see the difference.
I had to make the same choice some time ago, and I went with the Note 2. I don't regret a second for doing so, especially when my GS4-using friends keep asking for chargers constantly cause their battery won't last them through a day.

Thanks, you made my day :cyclops:
But I hope that other people ensure what you say cause I get confused after someone tells me that S4 is a better choice
Well, I wrote my opinion on this matter, others may have different preferences. It all comes up to what you need - big screen + big battery vs. fullHD + newer hardware - considering that if you put my Note 2 (and I say "my Note 2" because I'm talking about rooted + custom ROM) next to a GS4, you don't see any performance difference. Any.
Oh, yeah, and the pricing difference...
I agree with ruwin. However it all depends on what you want to use it for. I personally don't care to much for TouchWiz exclusive features which are now not so exclusive. For example, OmniRom have a note 2 custom ROM with android 4.3 with working multi window and there are now plenty of apps and mods which make good use of the s-pen. That being said and considering hardware differences to be neglible what makes the note 2 'better' in my opinion is the larger screen. I couldn't go back to a smaller screen now. And if your looking for the TW features, The 4.3 upgrade should be just around the corner and there are already fully functional note 3 features being ported. Don't be scared! Get the note 2

Thanks,
waiting for other opinions
Well I've had my note 2 for a year. I was eagerly awaiting the 3 and was going to buy that.
However, my father got the s4 so I had to set it all up for him and whilst the screen is nice, its too small and the battery life is the same. For me the gimmicks it has are pointless and if I was asked to swap my 2 for the s4 I wouldn't.
I'm a big game player and the bigger screen and battery are a must for me but everyone is different.

That's a good point
if it has a bigger screen + better battery life + good performance vs brighter Full HD >>> THE NOTE II WINS
The Note 2 is a better choice as it has better battery and S Pen features. Also I heard many users having problems with the S4 such as heating, etc.
Will add that if want to take pictures if blackboard notes in college, why cant you snap them after class, or have the teacher hold on for 3 seconds so you can take the photo before erasing?

Well, some teachers don't allow us to take pictures (don't know why) so we take the photo while he is not looking
The BB also gets to be erased about 4-5 times every class, so simply I can't capture it after the class

Yeah for me the bigger screen whilst playing is a must now. I know it seems hard to believe but I pick up my old phone and I couldn't believe how I used to play games on such a small screen.
For you I guess also price may be a factor? My dad wanted the note 2 but got a better deal on the s4.

Well, finally I'm getting the Note 3 instead if Allah wishes :fingers-crossed:
There is a 26% discount on its price, so it's about the same price as an S4
Thanks everyone for your help
It maybe helpful for anyone who is confused about the Note 2 and the S4
