[Q] Shutter lag - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm curious what kind of shutter lag does the camera have? I have a Galaxy S3 now and am pretty happy with the almost zero shutter lag. Is the shutter lag on the Note 2 comparable to the S3?
Thanks

I think they have the same camera whatsoever

As fast as eye blink.

If you go to the 16:15 mark in this video you can see the camera being used

Seems pretty quick.

It appears that 4.0.3 has fixed the camera issues

You know how everyone is complaining about the camera, mainly because photos come out blurry/not sharp. The thing causing that was VERY slight movement when clicking the button to take the pic. It seemed to come out of focus very easily.
Now, with 4.0.3, I can get sharp pictures even with more movement. It's not so "touchy" anymore and stays in focus.
Anyone else notice?

If this is true, then it's awesome.

I hope it's true. There's more than one camera bug.
Im surprised how well it focuses in low light with out flash.

You know they could offer a shooting mode that used the phones sensors to detect camera (phone) movement and hold off the shutter until motion is minimized to improve sharpness. You might want a mode that does this but other modes, like sports, that don't delay the shutter.

Good to hear, what about the white haze when near a window. Now, can anyone recommend a 4.0.3 ROM without any visual mods?

You can change the boot animation yourself. Here's a link to a 720p version of the default ICS animation: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380655&highlight=animation
EDIT: I've found the 720p version of the original Galaxy Nexus boot animation lags a bit, so if you're not happy with that one here's a link to a compilation of boot animations: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1364044&highlight=nexus+s+boot+animation
My personal favourite so far is this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402764
wish google would add an option for the instant shutter or delayed snap after autofocus. 90% of the bad pictures are taken because the person did not either tap to focus or held down the camera button for it to focus
Same goes with panos, I wish they gave you an option for auto panning versus the snap then move, like sgs2 did
Switched to redemption a 4.0.3 ROM and now pics are a lot better. Very impressed.

Faster shutter speed

I've looked thru and haven't seen anything for gs2 about if it's possible to increase the shutter speed on the camera..coming from sensation it's a noticeable diff. And the instant shutter was handy when trying to capture pix of my on the go toddler...anything known to help?

If you tap the screen to focus first and then tap the shutter, it works much faster.

How do you know your nexus has focused while taking shots?

I can't get used to the galaxy nexus camera, my previous phone was a galaxy s ii and while I was taking pictures all I had to do was hold down the shutter button and then it focused and I knew it dis because the viewfinder turned green, now on the nexus holding down the shutter button does not focus, it just takes the shot, to focus I have to let the phone settle for a few seconds and watch it try to focus, but it doesn't get it right quite a few times, there's no way of activating manual focus? To make things worse the viewfinder is always white, it never turns green so I find myself taking the same picture 3 times to choose the best one later :/

Yes, touch the screen and it focuses on whatever you touched.

Just click on what you want to focus on. It will continually focus on that object. On 4.0.4 it uses continuous auto focus. Don't hold down the button.
When you press it it focuses again if it is out of focus.

I'm using 4.0.4, how was the focusing done on 4.0.2? I'm not convinced I have to touch to focus and then tap the shutter button to take the pic, the thing is when I release my finger from the place I focused to tap the shutter, the phone moves well I move it involuntary and the focus is ruined

Back on 4.0.1 the camera used the standard method, press shutter till the box turned green, then its focused and you let go. But it also had quick shot too.
They removed the standard method in 4.0.4 so now all we're left with is the quick focus. I miss the old way too honestly.

Oh , I could live with the constant autofocus if the viewfinder turned green, but I never does, the only way to know for sure if the camera focused is tap the screen in the spot you want to focus and then it turns green and you should be able to take the pic, if you manage to not move the phone (accidentally)..

Yeah it kinda stinks. At one point ardrynelene compiled the old camera apk for us to get back the old functionality. But I forget what ever happened with it.

That's hardware dependent. The camera hardware is greatly improved in the s3

So that still not available to flash on S2 stock?
I saw custom roms which does have that camera app like on Darkside Evolution 2 by TDJ.
thanks in advance
You can get Photaf app for panorama, and Camera 360 for HDR and other effects.

bump.
the biggest reason the S3 camera is so fast is AI Servo AF. ie full time real time auto focus. that is where most of your lag is so the S2 should also benefit from this (its the exact same camera IIRC) now it might not be able to dump a crap ton of pics as fast as you can press the button like the S3 can but it should be able to get that first shot instant like the S3 can.

GNex Feature

Would love to see the HTC One X camera feature somehow implemented in our Gnex, the ability to take a picture while recording a video. Seems pretty cool!
We've always had that. Tap your previously taken picture while recording and it'll take another.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Actually don't you tap the "LiveView" while recording to take a still?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
This feature has been there since ICS on the GNex. Tap the screen while recording video and it takes a still.
Ye this was actually on the GN first just tab the screen while recording and you are done.
Works much better on the one x and s3 though. I.e. no stutter like I get with my nexus.

That's because the Hardware on those phone are a little better.
I've never had any lag issues. I just touch the screen while recording and BAM! Still photo taken. No lag or stutter at all. Paranoid Android JB...
