Idk if it works if your restoring SMS/MMS data from a CM10 ROM to a TW ROM and vice versa but it definitely works if your nandroid is a TW based ROM and your current ROM is also TW based

Just use SMS backup and restore to backup before switching roms. That's what I used when switching to the S3 and when flashing roms on the E4GT.

+1 on the SMS Backup/Restore, there are a few on the market...
What I do is use titanium back up to back up the data and later restore the data only, not sure if this works from TW to AOSP though...have not tried it, yet.

With Titanium, when you restore the data, does that include contacts and apps as well?

Yea but if you add contacts via your Google account you may get doubles.
Titanium Backup also has a great backup/restore option for SMS and MMS, works regardless of the ROM you are on and the ROM you are restoring to

Wasn't sure of that, reason why I didn't respond earlier. Thanks for clearing it. I usually don't flash AOSP roms...

I have just successfully extracted sms and mms from nandroid (CWM) backup.
Backed up system was CM7 and restored to CM10 on Milestone2.
I used Titanium Backup (need the pro version for 'extract from nandroid') and restored 'Phone/Messaging Storage'.

[Q][Backup] How to Completely back everything up [Question]

Hey guys if I was to do a Nand backup would that be a complete backup like, when I restore my apps, sms messages etc.. will be restored?
Thanks
Yes your apps and sms messages will be restored. I believe only the radio is not backed up.
Ok great no more SMS backup and restore or app backup and restore lol.
Thanks

Well, the only problem is that the NAND will replace your ROM too, so unless you don't ever want a new rom you'll never be able to seperately back up your messages or apps (unless there's some advanced option to do so). I just use ROM Toolbox to backup my sms app etc to save my messages, which can be transferred across roms

In TWRP you have the option of only restoring data. Problem is you will restore ALL your data. Especially if you change bases, there is a high probability of running into problems

Titanium gives you the option of restoring info from back up...not sure if it does all the data or if you can pick or choose. All i know is that it's available to restore things from nandroid from cwm and twrp. So that may be an option too

Faster App Install After Flashing

You do not have to go to Google Play when reinstalling all your apps.
On a rooted phone, using a file explorer program, go to the data folder, then go to the app folder.
Here are all the apps that you have downloaded.
All you have to do is to make a folder on your SD card (or where ever you want) and copy all the files to that folder.
Now when you want to reinstall any or all apps, they are there to install.
I have all my apps reinstalled in about 10 minutes after flashing.

Or just use Titanium Backup. Will Auto re-install all your apps for you.

Yeah. Anyone who flashes uses titanium....it does all the work. So much faster than doing a manual install.

Make a nandroid before flashing the rom. Flash your new rom. Without leaving recovery, choose advance restore and restore Data form the nandroid you just made. Reboot.
You'll have your apps restored before ever booting your new rom.

Restoring a nandroid /data backup will, I don't think titanium can...could be wrong though. But if you do a nandroid restore, you need to be on the same type of Rom. Ie stock ics restoring a stock ics nandroid data file is fine, but if you are on asop and flash nandroid data from a stock backup it may cause issues.

If you use a 3rd party launcher, restoring it from TiBu will restore all settings in most cases.
Thanks. That makes sense. I spent a good hour laying out my icons and widgets that I did not want to go through that again but don't want to test it out to see what works.

If you use Titanium Backup, you can choose to save the layout for your TouchWiz-based home under system settings (shows up as TouchWiz), and if you restore that, it'll keep your layout, except perhaps for widget placement, if they're a third-party widget and not installed when you restore the TW settings. It'll definitely work on third-party launchers too, though.

[Q] help with getting data after flashing a rom

Im a beginner to flashing roms. Started to root my galaxy s3 and was a success the first time around. After I backup my apps and datas, contacts etcs with titaniumbackup free version. Then I flashed the CM10 everything went smooth. Successfully restoring my apps but I cannot restore my data such as, contacts, texts msg, email accounts other than gmail. Anyone know the reason why this is happening or maybe use a different backup app? Any tips, suggestions would be helpful.
As of right now back to Tmobile stock-rooted jb 4.1
I recommend MyBackup Pro to do app and data backups - allows me to restore my data with the app.

glad this wasnt an IMEI issue lol, hope you find a solution
Restore the data from "contacts storage". Go to backup/restore find it in the list and tap it. Hit restore, data only.
For texts I use SMS backup & restore. TB didn't seem to work well.
Titanium Backup doesn't backup your SMS automatically. Go into Titanium Backup, press menu, and then hit backup data to XML. This will allow you to backup your call log, SMS/MMS, Bookmarks, and even your Wifi Access points.

[Q] restore messages from backup.

Hey guys just had a question. I just flashed over a new rom and completely forgot to backup my texts and i had some unsaved numbers in my previous rom..my question is there anyway to go into the backup and pull out some file that has all my messages so i can restore them on my current rom?

The only way I would know how, would be to download a third-party SMS app. From there, can you do use titanium to restore it or use it's own backup and restore features through that app. After that, use that on your new ROM and those messages should come back to the stock SMS application... Maybe. I mean "maybe" to the messages going back to the stock SMS app.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T999 using xda premium
Within the menu in the paid version of TitaniumBackup, not sure about free version, is a "restore from nandroid backup" feature that allows you to restore specific app data from a backup location. The app will check your backup to see what is available to restore and give you the option to select which app or data or both you wish to restore. I've used it before and it worked. Good luck

I always backup my contacts and texts in Kies, you can always just restore them back to your device even if its rooted. Just did that to mine last night. Hope this helped.

I use sms backup. It works great. You can backup to internal sd or sd card. Very simple app, but it does the job. I've never restored sms messages with Titanium Backup, just my user apps.

Your contacts should be synced with your Google account.
Text messages are stored in a different part of the memory that you have to back up specifically (titanium backup or SMS backup) apps also need to be backed up with titanium backup or let Google install them for you in the setup wizard.
