Hello,
Ever since my update to ICS I have been unable to zoom out all the way using any of the Email clients on my E4GT.
I mainly use the K9 client but even with the stock app, the zoom out capability do not function properly. My research points to this being an issue with ICS webview, not really sure how to proceed.
Is there some work around or fix because this is a big annoyance when viewing large emails, having to pan in every direction, i cant imaging im the only one ?
Thanks,
Pete
Anyone ? ?
Pete
I don't think many users use anything other then gmail and stock email.

Stock email has the same problem, have you ever tried zooming completely out with it ?
Pete
just to add some information on the subject: the android default email client NOW is able to zoom out until the message will fit on the screen, and not any further. to do that ou have to go to Settings, General Settins, Automatic Adjust Messages. this will make the emails to open with the content adjusted by it's width. then you can zoom-in freely and zoom-out until the starting zoom position. It seems that ICS does not let we zoom out any further than the starting zoom level. If other email clients could open the messages with the "zoomed-out" view this issue would be solved.
to make things clear: this zoom feature was added on december 05, 2012: http://www.themobileindian.com/news/9551_New-Gmail-app-for-ICS-arrives-with-pinch-to-zoom-feature

Seems the problem is still there after checking the settings and updating ? ? ?

Still no fix for k9...

Hey everyone, I'm new to Android and just looking to get situated with everything.
I use Gmail for my email and I've found the stock Gmail app to be ALMOST exactly what I need. Major flaws are zooming in and out and selecting text are impossible and it really annoys me.
Basically the features I want are:
Push or IMAP, I like the delivery speed of the Gmail App
Label support, or if folders are used then the ability to Star/Flag/COPY to folders instead of just moving
Zooming out for viewing large emails
It would be nice to have a unified inbox, but not a big deal for me
I'm pretty disappointed with the Gmail app missing some of these key usability features. Is the HTC mail program better in any way? Are there any other options that work well?
Thanks.
Pretty sure the GMail app has label support. You can star and label things as is since "folders" are just labels in GMail anyways. Push for GMail is a FroYo feature, afaik. Looking forward to that instead of having an active connection for my GMail.
Zooming out would be nice but on the Evo's screen it doesn't seem like it would be really needed unless you have people e-mailing you that don't know how to press the enter key every now and then. I haven't tried zooming in/out in the HTC e-mail app but I doubt it's present there. Seems like a low priority feature, imo.
The non-GMail e-mail program is pretty good. Supports POP, IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync. Unified Inbox, no. Personally, I dislike a unified inbox as I like to know who is sending me stuff where and with what address I should be replying with. I've yet to setup folders and such but I expect you can since folders are a pretty basic function for e-mail. I know the Exchange ActiveSync will sync folders, contacts, and calendar so you probably can.

Yea, the Gmail app does have Labels, which are essentially folders.
The Gmail app is perfect IMHO except zooming and selecting text. The zooming is an issue for emails I get that are HTML formatted. Like Gamestop or Best Buy, etc... They usually have big headers and text with padding on the left. This makes the text all out of my view. The only way to read then is to turn my phone sideways and/or scroll left to right as I read... A little anoying. I noticed this issue in the HTC mail program too.
I also noticed today that I can't select text or copy it from emails in the Gmail application. I'm not sure if this is an issue in other clients as well or what.
not to thread jack by any means, but this seems relevant to my question, somewhat. does anyone know how to (when you have multiple accounts linked) have it send from a specific account or am i limited to the one i have synced with my phone?
thanks and i hope you get your problems resolved, i wish i could select text too, its a bit annoying that that feature isnt there.
Gmail app works perfectly for my purposes but you are right that it doesn't have zoom or the ability to cut and paste. If you come across an email where you need either of these two, just open up your browser and go to Gmail from there. Both of those functions work perfectly on the mobile gmail site.
Yea, that's what I've been doing. Just a little tedious considering they are pretty basic features. Not really dealbreakers for me though.
Might I suggest K-9 mail, it's and open source solution that has imap/pop support and integrates seamlessly.

I'll try it. It can't hurt right.
I'll throw in a vote for k9. I use it to manage 3 emails, two IMAP emails through godaddy and my gmail. It works great for me.

Oh I agree. I am all for decreasing keystrokes/screen presses. That's the reason I have Camcorder and Camera on my home screen. I should only need one but if I'm in a hurry to capture something, the fact that it takes an extra three screen presses to switch between video/still means that I might miss it.
I think it's quite likely that Gmail will be updated to include those basic features in the near future.
What is it? Originally this was a direct extract of the Email.apk from Nexus One 2.3.4; but the most recent update uses a bug-fixed version extracted from CM7. Primarily because the text prediction bar works in this Email app; while it seems to be missing from all the SGS Gingerbread Email.apks.
Update November 3: I have been using CM7 and don't see myself switching back... CM rocks!!
Update June 6: New version extracted from CM7 nightly that appears to really fix the problem where Exchange email accounts stop syncing, requiring a reboot of the phone. I've been using this build 4 days without sync problem. Relevant threads HERE and HERE
As far as I know this will only work on a Gingerbread ROM. Install via CWM. The installer will attempt to ERASE your emails and email account settings from your phone. This keeps the system from getting all goofed up due to database incompatibilities between Email.apks (Thanks nitr8 and styxx!)
I tested this under Juwe's ROM v4.2 and under Darkys 10.1 against my office Exchange server. It seems to work great.
I am not a developer by any means. What I've posted here is something hacked together out of nothing more than dumb luck. (Really, all I did was extract the APK from the CM7 nightly and modify the menu xml files to link to APK internal PNG images rather than linking to the phone framework PNGs. No actual program code changes were made by me.) If it bricks your phone and your hair falls out... sorry, but don't come crying to me. You have been warned! If this app doesn't work for you, please post anyway so I can laugh at you... Errr... I mean, so I can try to help you.
May 8th update: Some of the menu icons were not showing up properly. Spent some time with APK Manager and figured out how to add in the missing icons.
looks fun
ive tried this and it looks good and works well. The major issue for me as with all the older email apps is there is no "Move to folder" option..... which absolutely drives me nuts. I had it until I tried using the TAB email app, then tried going back but keep getting this same apk and am missing this option. Its a real pain!
Funny, I didn't even notice the "Move to Folder" option was absent!
For me the text prediction was a huge issue, and it was really my only motivator for trying it out. I'm very happy with how quick and responsive this app is. With the stock app I would get lag at different times, especially noticeable when deleting multiple messages. This Nexus version seems to delete them instantly. I also really like having the check-mark boxes present on the message list.
I haven't tried the TAB email app, are you saying the move-to-folder option is missing from the TAB version as well? Have you tried the SGSII Email app from this thread?
good plan
the option was there in the tab email app and also in the newer one of the galaxy but I cant find the apk for that! that'll teach me to back them up! I'll have a look at that thread anyway and see where it leads. Thanks for your work and your assistance.
post a couple of screenshots please: ) otherwise thanks!

THANK YOU. Samsung email client is sub-optimal. I feel like I can breath again. No more staring at the screen waiting to read an email.
Thanks for sharing !
Anyway, Landscape mode (as with Samsumg one) doesn't work with this Email.apk ... So I'll stay with my K9-mail app.

I use K9 for my personal email account, and the Nexus app for my work email account... and I don't see a difference in the way they handle landscape mode... so just curious, what am I missing?

It doesn't look significantly different. There are check boxes along the left edge of the message list view so you can quickly select multiple messages for deletion, otherwise it looks pretty much the same. The big difference is in how much more responsive it is over the Samsung client, and the fact that the keyboard text prediction bar works when using this email client.

There was a misunderstanding : Samsung app has a different landscape mode.
quick noob question. do i have to wipe anything before flashing this? I'm guessing no but want to be sure.
You need to flash the ZIP via from ClockworkManager, and it will attempt to wipe your email accounts to prevent force close issues due to email database differences between the Email.apk versions.

Thanks for posting this! I was killing myself trying to figure out why autocorrection and word prediction wasn't working on my gb rom. I installed it on my captivate running a gb rom (Serendipity VII). It works very nicely for me.
New version _actually_ seems to fix Exchange sync problem.
Thanks for the update. I had trouble getting it to connect over a good 3g signal, but it did so when I enabled wireless for the first sync. I hadn't noticed the synching problem but might not have used it long enough to see the problem. All seems to be working. This app is much nicer than the stock samsung email client in virtually every way. It is much more polished and easier to use. It would be nice if it didn't clear settings when updating over itself, but that is not a big deal.
It's a bit confusing in this thread, but I take it that this apk also lacks Move To Folder? That's a seriously useful feature and it might drive me back to stock on my Incredible just to get it back. Then, of course, I lost the ability to create private appointments in the calendar! Whee. Have you found a version yet that has this feature?
Are there any email clients available that allow, and preferably default to, a zoomed out full view?
For some reason every single email client I have tried so far defaults to a cramped display that allows you to zoom _in_ (more!) but not out.
I was complaining about this to a friend of mine, he gives me a stupid look and says "Yeah, mine has always done that"....
He has the original Atrix, which sure enough, along with the hideous original Motorola skin has an email client that can zoom out! I had someone else check a new RAZR and it's email client can't zoom out, so I guess they "fixed" that...
Any way, any ideas?
Thanks,
Ben

You can unlock and install CM10. The standard AOSP email client can zoom just fine. There are some 3rd partiy clients that work well but they have other limitations. Unfortunately HTC is too unbelievably stupid to create an email client with proper zoom.
As much as I would love to switch to ICS and start tinkering with it and releasing theming mods, I just can't switch when all the ICS/CM10-based roms have for whatever reason prevented fully zooming out in emails, which worked just fine in gingerbread. Regardless of whichever email app used, from stock to touchdown to maildroid to k-9, you simply cannot zoom out completely, and are forced to pan around oversized emails, scrolling left to right just to see large images, which is a total dealbreaker for me given I NEED to be able to zoom out sufficiently for work emails. If any brilliant human being can figure out how to mod ICS or CM10-based roms or knows of an email app that has some kind of "email overview" feature, please let me know and I would LOVE to donate, cause I am DYING to start tweaking the new roms and making them pretty =)

SON OF A!!!
I was so excited and so embarassed to discover the stock lg email DOES let you zoom out entirely (you were absolutely right!), and then MORTIFIED to discover it DOESN'T HAVE PUSH!?!?! Are you kidding me? An email app that doesn't have push in 2012??
Okay, so unfortunately I have to clarify...
an email app that lets you zoom out completely AND has push
Yo, konrad, quick question since I'm not on an LG ROM. Are you using the automatic configuration in the LG email app? If so, that's wrong. You need to do a manual setup, use the Microsoft exchange option, and set it up like an iPhone would in order to get push. Just search for "gmail exchange" on Google for the settings.

While we're on the subject of the LG email app, I really would kind of like to try using it in CM9/10 if anyone is able to put up the .apk (dunno if it needs to be resigned or anything). I too would really like pinch to zoom out lol.
just to add some information on the subject: the android default email client NOW is able to zoom out until the message will fit on the screen, and not any further. to do that ou have to go to Settings, General Settins, Automatic Adjust Messages. this will make the emails to open with the content adjusted by it's width. then you can zoom-in freely and zoom-out until the starting zoom position. It seems that ICS does not let we zoom out any further than the starting zoom level. If other email clients could open the messages with the "zoomed-out" view this issue would be solved.

Any way to get the apk w/ installer for the latest email app with the zoom fixed?
I really need to find an answer or a solution to this.
So I have a security camera setup at my store and house... The DVR Recorder is set up to email alerts to me directly when it detects motion... if the DVR senses motion, I get 3 snap shots sent to me thru email directly to my phone (or whatever email address). The images are small CIF (240x320) resolution shots spaced 2 seconds apart - so 3 pics total.
OK: So when I had an iPhone, and I received an alert email - I would SEE the 3 attached photo's automatically when clicking the email message.
Now I'm using GS3 phone, and I get the email but the pictures are 3 separate attachments and I have to manually click on them to download and display - each one individually. VERY ANNOYING.
I've tried the default Gmail app, and Enhanced Email... Same result with both email apps. I'd like to get the email to automatically show the images - which are really small, and I don't understand why I need to manually download them to see them............
Anyone have any suggestions????????

Yeah of course. I think the issue is these are sent as ATTACHMENTS, not as embedded HTML images. What I need is an email app that will auto-download attachments, either all or maybe if I can say download attachments under a certain file size.
Have you tried some of the apps available at the store? Like K-9 or MailDroid. I haven't used em so cant say which might do what you need.
Something else you could try is grabbing the email app from another Samsung phone like the Note, or see if the plain Android stock email app could work.
Sorry I dont have a direct answer for you, but though id at least throw out some ideas.
