Jelly Bean - Network Modes confusion - 2G/3G Only/3G+2G etc. - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Can anyone please explain to me the difference between the following options in SYSTEM > NOTIFICATION DRAWER > WIDGET BUTTONS > NETWORK MODES?
The options are:
1. 2G/3G+2G
2. 2G/3G Only
3. 2G/3G Only/3G+2G
I understand what option 2 is (2G/3G Only) as this makes sense, but the other two make less sense and I find them quite confusing, especially the 3G+2G parts.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

I can't tell you for sure since i'm on a sense rom, but as I understand it this refers to widget buttons that toggle between 2 or 3 options.
So:
1. 2G/3G+2G => toggles between "2g network only" and "2g or 3g network"
2. 2G/3G Only => toggles between "2g network only" and "3g network only"
3. 2G/3G Only/3G+2G => toggles between "2g network only", "3g network only" and "2g or 3g network"
So the 3G+2G mode would have your phone connect to an available 3G network unless when there is no 3G available in which case it will try to connect to an available 2G network.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

How to use H only as internet?

When I connect to internet depending on the location sometimes I get the G icon sometimes the H icon.
Is it possible to set it only to connect on H (even if reception is bad, 1 bar only, rather than G with 3-4 bars reception)
Is there an App for it? than can let you choose what you wanna connect to?
I know in my nokia n95 i could go to networking and choose what i wanted but i cant seem to find that on the galaxy s.
any help would be great
thanks
LOL...
G - GPRS
H - HSDPA+ (faster than 3G)
You can't change it, It depends on your signal strength and location.

constant HSDPA+ would also kill your battery too..i would image ye?
Only as much as what constant 3G uses.
im sure its possible because here is how to do it on the Omnia HD, its just a hidden menu setting
http://forums.samsungi8910omnia.com...ncrease-web-browsing-speed-when-using-3g.html
we have the same menu on the Galaxy S, so if someone can just figure out how to get to this part then you can do it
That is to increase the speed of the 3G. You can only see results if your using 3G,not sure it will increase the speed of the HSDPA. Also this wont allow you to get more of the signal or allow you to use just 3g or hsdpa for internet, again its down to network signal and location.

You could do *#*#4636#*#* in the phone app and change CDMA/GSM Auto to WCDMA or WCDMA preferred for 3G only, but you will have no service if you leave 3G coverage since it will not revert to standard GSM.

That method didn't work for me when I tried it; each time I re-entered the menu, the settings had reverted to whatever was chosen in Menu -> Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Mobile Networks... either GSM Only or GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) depending on whether the 2G only box was checked.
To get 3G only, enter ServiceMode:
*#*#197328640#*#* -> Debug Screen -> Phone Control -> Network Control -> Band Selection
Choose WCDMA BAND for 3G only.

How to enable 2G(gsm) mode?

Hello, anyone knows how to enable 2G mode? I can choose betwen 2g/3g/4g auto, 2g/3g auto and 3g only.
My phone is from uk O2 and gsm option only is not available. I was wondering if there is any simply way to switch on it?
You need to go into the hidden "phone info" menu.
*#*#4636#*#*
Or if.you have cm, you can make a quick settings toggle for 2g
That code *#*#4636*#*# doesnt work for my phone. Can I do anything whitout root?
I noticed that my phone switch to often betwen 2G/3G so battery drain is faster.

"LTE/GSM auto (PRL)" get 4G network but "LTE only" does not get network

"LTE/GSM auto (PRL)" get 4G network but "LTE only" does not get network
Hie, currently I could not connect to 4G network using "LTE only" mode
However, if I use LTE/GSM auto (PRL) the 4G network appear.
I try to search network under setting and force select the 4G network during PRL model. My Operator
can be found. But not in "LTE only" mode.
Also I try to use another ZF2 for this option, it works for "LTE only". So I suspect is configuration problem either build.prop or
telephony.
Network operator: U Mobile (Malaysia, 4G)
Please help. Thank you.
Will missing /factory/PhoneInfodisk/country_code file causing this?
I try to look for this file in factory folder, unfortunately it cannot be found. PhoneInfodisk not exist.

For LTE to be able to make phone calls, it has to switch back to 2G/3G unless VoLTE is enabled, which cannot be done on our zenfone, so lte-only will not work, except for data-only.

Yes, I was forcing it not to use voice for sim 1. As I have mentioned, another zenfone 2 is able to perform LTE Only mode. Something wrong or missing in root/factory/ causing network unable to be found during Non PRL mode. Help.

Force 4G only.

Is there any way we can force cellular network to be 4G LTE only? I want to stop it from automatically switching to H+.
I'm on stock nougat, rooted.
I think you can change it in the hidden service menu. BUT be VERY CAREFUL not to change other things in there.
First make sure your preferred network type is LTE auto, not 3g or 2g only.
Next, go to phone / dialer app.
Enter: *#*#4636#*#*
It should automatically direct to Testing menu, with Phone information, Usage statistics, and Wi-Fi information choice.
Select "Phone information".
Warning: There's many things to see here, but you can easily ruin your radio band in here. Just follow this guide and do not even touch other things.
Go to "set preferred network type"
I'm not sure what it would show for your phone, but for mine it shows "LTE/UMTS auto (PRL)".
Select "LTE only". It should immediately reset your network to 4G.
If it still switches to 3G, then test other options in the "set preferred network type" option.
After finish, exit the hidden menu and clear it from recent apps menu.
Warning: DO NOT CHANGE OTHER VALUES IN THERE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. IT COULD RUIN YOUR RADIO BAND IF YOU'RE NOT CAREFUL.
Thanks. It worked.
