Hi, just got my S3 last week. Now I'm looking to find a custom rom with best battery life and stablity. What would you recomment?

You just have to test drive them all basically and figure which is best for your phone. Apparently the latest Jelly Bean port from
Tmobile (LIF) is running pretty smooth. There's 3 different TW out.
I've been running BlackJelly 0.7 LIF for a couple of days now and have excellent battery life. Just be wary that there are some Sprint-specific apps that are included that don't work on AT&T (e.g., Sprint Hotspot, Cloud Settings), and there is a screen wake/lock issue that the developer recently acknowledged that there is a workaround for.
Generally these types of threads are frowned upon as it inevitably leads to a my ROM is better than your ROM. You'll get nothing but "whip it out and measure" type posts.
I suggest you read the OPs of what you think that you might liek to run and then a decent rule of thumb is the read at least the last 10 pages of each thread (if not reading the whole thing)
But above all, use the search or your next thread will be "Help, I think I bricked my device"
Thread Closed.

I know this is a noob question as stated by the title but, I'm on the cm9 rom and the battery life is terrible. I am considering flashing a kernel but which kernel would be the best for battery life? I usually just use the kernel that comes with the rom so I'm new to this. Also Iknow this is a similar question to "which rom is the best" to which people would just reply try them out its different for each phone. If you feel this way just post your experience with a cm9 custom kernel. They don't have a list of features like rom do. Please excuse any errors in grammer and spelling
I know you are noob ill go easy on you this time and as stated in other posts about the very same topic plenty of times before with Kernels Roms ect. there is no best its just whatever works best for you there are only a few to choose from now so flash 1 a day and see which one works best for YOU thats what the focus cause we all use our phones differently.

Nice answer K3vin. Exactly this plus EVERY phone is different and EVERY user is different using his phone differently. So whether ROM or kernel every one is different depending on how you use your phone. They all have great battery life and it is often the user or an offending app that causes bad battery life. The DEVS here are great and will not release something that sucks your battery dry.
I'm on Franco with aokp milestone 4. Personally I think the battery life is rancid. Any better options?

Try a few....
The good thing about this part of xda is that people don't make a big fuss if someone makes this kind of post. Unlike the Galaxy S II forums.
I use Foxhound 0.2 and franco.kernel. Lasts me the entire day from 8am to 12am.

I thought the good thing about this part of xda was that people didn't make these kind of threads. The nexus s forum was riddled with this kind of thing.
Is it so hard to look through rom and kernel threads and read peoples posts.
Why should people get answers without making the effort to find out on their own.
It only takes a few clicks.
running the leaked 4.0.4 with the latest lean kernel and its the best battery life i have seen yet . All radios and bootloader updated as well. Lean kernel settings , hotplugx , 1200-350 , standard voltage that comes with the kernel
No one has made any sort of test or extensive trial of the kernel and rom combinations for best battery life.
For my usage franco.kernel nightly 98 is working perfectly well with Liquid rom, but that might be different for your uses, and it might be different because you like to undervolt, or overclock and undervolt, and you use different programs in the background. etc.. etc.. etc.
If you would like to know the best combo, try them all and do tests. Maybe write it all down and come back. Hopefully nobody would have changed their rom or kernels in the meantime.

Nah, it's about time this forum will get clustered with these kinds of posts because more people are buying the phone and think they are so important that they need to make a new thread dedicated to their phone. As said in my sig, I encourage people to use search whenever possible, but I'm not the kind of person to diss another person when they don't use it
I read several posts stating franco.kernel was good for battery life so I have been using it, but in my experience of the past couple weeks this is not true at all; I definitely do not get better battery life out of franco.kernel.

And this is exactly why this kind of thread is pointless.
X amount of ppl think Franco has good battery.
Someone posts here saying it doesn't.
Who is wrong? No-one.
Its all about the user. Plain and simple. Everyone's habits are different.
I wasn't dissing the guy, my first post said it all "try a few"
You will never know which kernel is the best until you try them yourself.
Half the fun of xda is flashing and trying new ****!

Same for me, in addition to other problems when running his kernels
The best combination I have tried so far is BAMF Paradigm ROM and Popcorn kernel. Using the gali something or other governor with just a few changes to it speedup.
Ooookay, I wasn't going to reply to similar thread, but since no one seems to be throwing out suggestions, here's mine from yesterday. There's more in that thread.
T-Mobile Galaxy S3 (T-999). I'm currently running Frosty Jellybean v11.6, (R.I.P.) so I'm looking for a suitable replacement that is in active development.
I would say I have average to advanced skills (I usually Oden to stock before installing a new ROM)
Wifi Calling is a must, so CM and all non TouchWiz ROMs are out.
I tend to prefer "close to stock" ROMs but I won't rule out something more customized.
I generally don't overclock so those features are not important to me.
I typically install Google Wallet (replace the NFC drivers, installing the MoDoCo hacked wallet binary and then change the build.prop).
I need fairly good battery life (stock experience or reasonably close to it).
What do you suggest?
Sounds like WICKED v7 is what you want if you want near stock feel, and better battery. It performs well.
If you do not mind a tweaked UI, DarthStalker X.

The developers do this really cool thing now, which consists of putting a list of all features that are within the rom in the first post of the thread. Most of the time they even put screenshots so you can see what it looks like! It's a very good thing for deciding on a rom.
Want to know something else really awesome?! Our friend mt3g put together a resource bible that is stickied in the general section that lists all of the roms available, with short descriptions of what they are!

True, but that only tells you so much about a ROM. I generally read the first page or two and the last page or two of each ROM I am considering. What you don't get is an informed opinion from someone who is really using the ROM.
Frosty JB was my favorite and I'm still using 11.3.2. Shame development had to stop on it, but there's no reason you still can't use it. 11.3.2 has the stock kernel, 11.6 has the Xone kernel and is overclockable. Personally, I always loved how close to stock 11.3.2 is, so I continue to use that version.

Like TheLastSidekick said, the WICKED ROM series seems like the option you are looking for providing what you want. I have been using it since the ICS days and I haven't had a single complaint with it.

Try out the very new STABLE SlimBean 4.2.1 if you want something different!
Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085828
Make sure you perform a clean install if you're coming from a different rom.
Cheers
Slim Roms are not TouchWiz. So will not have WiFi calling..
If I were you, I would go to the dev section and start mango around a few of them see which you like best. I would start with Wicked and Drastalker to begin with. If you're not satisfy, go to the next until you find your answer.
Don't believe what everyone says, follow your heart (hopefully you're not bias )

Yup. What they said. ^^^
That is the beauty of Nandroid. Try one, like it. Great. If not then Nandroid back to what you had/have. Only issue is that you can't Nandroid across build changes, meaning ICS to JB and then back to JB or 4.1.1/2 to 4.2.2 then back to 4.1.1/2. That would cause some partition issues. But since you know how to Odin, that is 80% of the cure for future problems.
Hi guys,
Just wondering if there's a general consensus on the most stable AOSP rom? Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without voice search, I must have a fully working camera, etc. Also built to be stable as a rock. Are the AOSP roms vulnerable to the SDS?
Or are they not quite there yet?
For those of you not on AOSP, what stock-based roms do you like? I don't really understand the difference between stock and things like ARHD for example? How stable is it compared to stock, and what about battery life? My 4.1.1 battery was incredible but 4.1.2 isn't so good.
Cheers!

Preferably one that doesn't have anything (major) broken - e.g I can live without newbies opinions, I must have a fully detailed answers, etc. Also built to be the most stable as a rock thread, one that even the mods won't delete for being the 500th repeat thread. Are the AOSP roms threads vulnerable to the SDS (Sudden Deletion Syndrome)?
Or are the threads not quite there yet? Do we need another one?
For those of you not on XDA regularly, what stock-based roms threads do you like? I don't really understand the difference between searching and posting yet another thread for example? How silly is it compared to other threads, and what about sarcasm life, how quickly will my threads be mocked? My first thread was incredible but this "What's the best ROM" isn't so good.
Cheers!
Android Revolution HD (14.0 for the Galaxy Note 2) is probably the closest you're going to come to what you want. It's based on the stock ROM, but lordy! is it fast. And rock solid. Has a built-in installer that allows you to remove (or not) the Samsung cruft. Been using it since version 9, and I am quite happy with it. Check the thread in the developer forum.

Hilarious! No seriously, thanks for taking the time to satirise the thread without taking note of some of the questions I'd asked.
I've searched long and hard about SDS and not getting anything at all concrete about the implications of using AOSP. We don't all have the £500 to throw around and just risk bricking our device because somebody is to pretentious to actually help out someone that has taken the time to look but still needs some guidance.

Hi mate, thanks for the response. ARHD was great on my desire HD when I used it almost 2 years ago on that, and it looks to be the best stock rom for my needs - I appreciate the first hand review though! Still trying to get my head around aosp roms, many of which without buglists and uncertainties regarding SDS :/

SDS Thread
What - is - the - best - ROM
The sad truth of SDS is that no one really knows (sure, there's a LOT of speculation) anything about it. I know 3 people with S3's who have had their phone die after they upgraded to the latest Sammy Official "patched for SDS" ROM. It's sadly a gamble we all take.
Anyway, if you're really done some research then I apologise. You didn't mention that at all in your original post, it looked like another "I'm too lazy to research this, bring it to me on a platter" thread.

Whilst the title is generic the inside of the thread was a bit more particular - with the SDS focus - and so given that nothing was out there I'm not really sure of the point of putting "honestly I've searched please don't kill me" because this is my 3rd device I've played with and used xda for and I know how petty a lot of forum members can be, it simply wouldn't make a difference.
The SDS thread is naturally where I started but has extremely limited info for aosp rom. The what is the best rom threads you posted are largely redundant given the lack of information or type of experience they're looking for is provided. Most are a waste of everyone's time and given how quickly development rakes place even if they were relevant they could still quickly be outdated.
Your tone in your first reply suggested that the answers were blindingly obvious and even a moron like me could find them with the most primitive of searches. Instead you've just admitted that no one really knows and it therefore was a valid question - a bit more thought before posting could go a long way.

The point of telling people you've done some research is so that they don't assume you're lazy. Sadly, most people ARE lazy. SDS focus? You mention it once, in passing.

Right, for your generic "Which is the best ROM" question. There's heaps of them out there already and none of them answer it because it's such a subjective question.

57 ROMs and 160 versions selectable.
I'm requesting your participation so that there is enough data to objectively answer the question "popular" and "best" as there is a scoring feature that allows ROMs to be ranked.
Please submit as many entries as you wish based on the ROMs and versions you've tried.

Holy mother of run-on sentences!
From what I can gather, since you've been only flashing CM for your uncle, you want him to have an AOSP Rom. The problem is that the version that you flashed 3 months ago isn't stable: it either had microphone issues or internet connectivity issues. I've had very limited stability issues with my AOSP Rom (see my sig for what I'm running), but mileage varies by phone, usage, and region.
If you really want a stable, and I mean full of horses, hay, and a farmer's daughter stable, you're looking at something closer to stock. Most ROMs in the Android Development Section with an [MD4] in their title will give you that stability. You won't be going back to 100% stock, as most of them have significant mods installed, but they are much more stable than AOSP (again, your mileage may vary). One that's typically linked in threads like this is The People's Rom. It's been a while since I've used it, but it has great support over in their thread. MOAR Rom is also a good one, as well as Wicked Sensations and Goodness Reborn. In case you haven't noticed, I just went through the top 5 or 6 threads over in the development section and linked them here.
If you have questions about a ROM's stability, look in the last 5-10 pages of the thread to see what issues people are having with the latest release of the ROM. That's what every one of us "Senior Members" do when flashing Roms, we read the Main post (numerous times) and then the last couple of pages. Typically it's very informative.
