Battery Drain Problem - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I bought my ATT GS3 out in Los Angeles this summer and then I returned to New Jersey to find that I have horrible battery life. It was not right away so this could be completely unrelated. As of right now my phone is at 75% and I let it drain while i was sleeping for 10.5 hours. I have tried several different roms which are usually good the first two days and then after that the battery life is bad again. I thought it may be some application I have installed so I removed a few of the ones I remembered downloading since I got back to NJ. I also updated to the latest radio ending in H9 because I was two behind when I checked. I have attached some battery information below. Any help anyone could provide would be great. I have tried Juice Defender which did save some battery life but it also caused a problem where I couldn't use the internet for 10 seconds after I wake the phone.

U need a Rom with cell standby fix
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

I thought the cell standby problem only effected the international GS3? If the cell standby fix was the problem then I shouldn't actually be draining that low right? Something must be draining the battery then. Google maps is probably draining the battery but how do I stop that from happening?

No its not just international and it is cell standby using almost 10% battery

try Triune ii or Black jelly 0.7 i tried them both on my s3 these both hav good battery backup..

Ariel 2.10 fixes everything!

I just installed the standby fix and im going to test that and see if it helps. If that doesn't work I'll try the other roms everyone has suggested. Will take a little while to make sure whats good and whats not though. Thanks for the advice.

Just another observation. Battery tends to drain faster if you leave it in your pocket. If you flash a rom, you might have to calibrate the battery stats. I only lose 1% every 2 hours overnight if I leave it on a cold surface.

So I have tried a few different roms and I'm still not happy with the battery life. I calibrate the battery after every rom installed and I usually keep that rom for atleast 2 days to test it. Right now I'm on AOKP. If the phone is on standby whats the general %/hr? When I go to sleep my phone drops from 92%-75% for about 10-11 hours (on desk at temp 60F). By Apocalypse487's response I should only see a drop of 5-6 % over night when I see 17%. Am I supposed to me losing this much battery life over night? To me I feel like I barely use my phone. Today wasn't too bad with 1 hr with screen on and about 1 hr in calls. I made it about 1 day 1 hour 36min on battery. My phone was sleeping for about 23.5 hours. Is this the typical battery life or is something wrong with mine? Tonight I'm going to try juicedefender and see if that helps.

I'm using ParanoidAndroid based off of CM10. Version 2.16 of PA gave me the best battery life. Try that. Certain Roms have better battery management, but that probably depends on the kernel. PA uses stock.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium

I'll give ParanoidAndroid a try and see what that does. So Juicedefender ended up making it so I only lost 1% over 9 hours. Thats pretty good. Way better than I wanted. So what could be draining the power over night. Is it because my data is on all the time but shut off when using Juicedefender?

I use Trinue 2, and I use an app called Go Power Master.
In GPM you can setup options that will turn off mobile data/gps/wifi when the screen is turned off, will automatically turn them back on when the screen is back on.
Those things little things I find can make a big difference for the battery to last throughout the day.

It's as Sianspheric says, common things like gps, data, and wifi uses power. I just started using Juicedefender since my friend told me it helps. Also download battery calibration. It's a root only app. Don't let your device discharge completely. It's bad for Lithium Ion batteries. That will clear out any bad data from Samsung.

FK23 rapid battery drain

First off I want to say I'm not a noob when it comes to flashing. I usually get 14-18 hours on a full charge with 3-4 hours screen time which seems to be the norm on e4gt roms. I haven't reinstalled any apps since flashing the FK23 stock leak and now a few days into the room settling I have almost 4 hours on a full charge and down to 9 percent left with almost 2 hours screen time. I have checked to see if my battery is swollen and it's not. The battery stops spinning immediately after I let go of it. Screen shots are attached and any insight would definitely be appreciated. I may have to go back to blu kuban since that's been giving me equivalent if not better batter life compared to FK23 stock

Did you use One click odin to flash this?
Try removing unneeded stock apps
No this is from the tar file flashed in Odin 1.85 I believe... Had no issues for a few days now it's going crazy...I didn't even restore my internal and external sd backups yet as I wanted to test a clean install first

I'm having rapid battery drain, too. I used the one-click no-data. I want to wipe everything and start over. Can I simply download and OC the data, or do I need to do something else, first?
As far as I know (devs correct me if I'm wrong) you can just use the OC restore that doesn't say no data... But I went the extra step and copied my entire internal and external to my pc for safe measures and so I could pick and choose what I wanted back on my phone. Then I cleared my internal and external sd before I even one clicked so it was already clean... I just wanted to make 100 percent sure everything was clean but that's just me

Was it completely dead when you put it on charge? I don't know why this works for me, but every Rom I have ever flashed, unless something is wrong with it, gives me better battery life 3-5 days after I flash it. Some of the old-timers say a Rom has to settle for a few days, so maybe it helps do that quicker. If all else fails, reflash the Rom.

I gotta say that your drain seems pretty extreme! I myself am having slightly accelerated battery drain but its better than what I had on ICS. My best recommendation would be to use an app like ROM Toolbox or Titanium Backup to freeze apps and background processes you don't need. If that doesn't help you may need to look at other options.

I'm going to try installing GSAM and checking out what's going on in the background but as far as I can see nothing out of the ordinary is going on with the processes. On a side note when I took a look at my battery itself the sticker has pink X's on it. Not so sure if it's water damage per say but it may be condensation/humidity since I live in Florida. Looking into getting an extended battery as a replacement and any suggestions on the cheapest but most reliable battery to purchase would be helpful and I don't really mind if I have to have a larger back door on my phone. The cheapest I've found is a Trexcell with the back door for $16.99 free shipping. If anyone knows of anything better/cheaper please point me in the right direction.
Another issue I've been having is wifi will connect and reconnect uncontrollably whenever it feels like it, and the sprint connection optimizer was disabled since I Odin'd.

Ya GSAM is a must have. I run it on every one of my devices. I was also getting some irregular battery drain. Then I looked at what apps where keeping my device awake the most and found that hotmail app had a 4 hour wake lock! Ouch! I uninstalled that and setup the default email client to check my hotmail hoping this will resolve my issue. But I can tell you right now nothing else is keeping my device awake that long so in theory this should solve my issue. You may want to go through this same exercise. After a couple of hours of running GSAM looking at which apps are using the most power. Then switch your view to "Time help awake" and see if something has a wake lock holding your device awake.
Good luck
I re-read garwynn's instructions for the one-click and realize that I made a mistake going from ICS (Lightweight) to FK23 without a full wipe. I thought I was paying closer attention when flashing, but I screwed up. Thankfully, this should be easily fixable. I'm running the one-click restore and am optimistic things will be better.

Well after installing gsam I was able to see that after going from 77% to 15% in just over 4 hours with 1 hour screen time I noticed that media server had 293 wakelocks with 1 hour of time held awake...might have found the culprit...will keep you guys updated as im sure it will help a few...just wanted to update that I switched to Universe JB to see if it was just that tar...apparently it wasn't seeing just as much battery drain
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
And now I also figured out that the media server was not the only culprit. The battery seems to be the problem after numerous tests returning results that the battery was only a 1175 mah battery instead of what it should be 1800 mah. The battery does not spin so don't always judge by that test alone. After deciding to put my OG Epic 4G slider battery in and take it for a spin these are the results I have so far with 300 mah less (1500 total) here is the screen shots below from a full charge
*EDIT * I'm now running blu Kuban FI27 and tested also with the stock 1800mah battery still dies rapidly and WiFi still disconnects and reconnects randomly

Averaging 10% loss every hour
I am experiencing roughly 8-12%, so averaging around 10% loss every hour with moderate to slightly heavy use. Right now after 5 hours & 10 minutes i am at 50%. I have Facebook & an Exchange email synced and was on a phone call for over an hour, have been texting a bit and using email, the internet & Facebook. I have removed Sprint ID, which seems to run in the background along with Sprint radio, Nascar, Yahoo Stocks & News, so that may be helping a little. Overall I think that the battery performance has improved for me.
I was experiencing some pretty bad drain but after letting the kernel settle for a few days and disabling the location services, I can easily make it through the day
My batter time stinks!
I'm also getting 9% per hour battery drain. I have a Tasker profile running which turns off DATA when the screen is off. Most of the day, my phone has not been in use and I'm still getting battery drain. BetterBatteryStats shows that a process called "surfaceflinger" (Android System) has used the most followed by "googlequicksearchbox" followed by Gmail. Partial Wakelocks report says "signalCollector.Scanner has a count of 4844 and "LocationRecieverService" has a count of 3411 with "LocationReportingService" having a count of 5625. However, all of these combined only add up to 2% so I'm confused as to what is burning my battery.

[Q] Short battery life

I've had my Galaxy W for just over a year. Whilst I was running the stock ROM I would more or less get a full day out of the battery. I upgraded rooted my device and installed the Cyanogen CM9 rc2 ROM. I don't recall any battery problems at first, but just over a week ago it started draining within five or six hours. This happened every day for a week.
Since then I have uninstaleld all apps (apart from Google Authenticator which I couldn't manage without), turned off wifi, bluetooth and everything else I could think of. Now I seem to be getting about 36 hours out of the battery... Although I think it goes from 35% down to 10% very, very quickly.
Leaving all data connections off and having no apps is okay in the short term, but is there a long term software solution?

Before I uninstalled any apps I downloaded and installed CPU Spy. Here are two screenshots taken with CPU spy.
I could reinstall it now without any other apps installed, if that will help?
I don't know enough about this, but I expected that the phone would spend a higher percentage of it's time in 'deep sleep' than that.

Interesting.. how about you check on the battery is it bloating or not?
For battery problem is either the phone calibrated wrong readings on the battery or the battery it self is the problem.
If you use your phone not too often but the deep sleep only reach 34% of the time then some apps is preventing the deep sleep, try to check what apps is that causes that with some battery stats app, try search it in xda or market

I've gone for Battery Stats Plus. I'll reenable wifi, bluetooth and 3G for a few days and see what happens. If that takes a toll on the battery I will post back with details from Battery Stats Plus.
I will also take the battery out later to inspect it.
Update:
My battery had 15-20% remaining and I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on. It now thinks that it does not have enough power to boot the phone. I don't know if that new information is helpful or not.

Took the battery out this morning for a proper look. There's definitely some bloating. Time to get looking for a replacement battery?
Could there be two issues here? As from the screenshots I posted the phone doesn't seem to have spent a lot of time in deep sleep.
I was just watching a YouTube video, with about 70% battery. The phone turned off, and when I've turned it back on it's gone down to 2%.
Could this be down to an improperly calibrated battery, or is it purely down to the physical damage/bloating to the battery?

After I install the CM10 alpha 6 conform to the first post, the battery life of my cellphone has been drained very fast - 21% about 6 hours and half.

Your battery is bloated? Then you *must* replace it. Period.
A damaged battery is the root cause of myriads of problems. Until that battery is replaced, you _will_ experience all kinds of annoyances, no matter what ROM/Kernel you're using, including inexplicable battery drain.

Galaxy Nexus Horrible battery

hi guys,
sorry i'm noob and this is second time im posting on xda forum. I recently bought a Galaxy Nexus Made in korea by samsung. It's currently running on 4.3 latest update phone doesn't lagg or nothing happend like crashes etc but please see below major problems im facing.
Phone getting hotter from back side where camera is installed
0 to 100% it take 5-7 hours to charge ( I tried both wall and USB)
I charged the phone to 100% in night and i didn't use the phone night in morning when i check the phone the batter was at only 12% left. the phone eat all the battery in 7 hours the most battery was used by phone idle 57% and stand by 33% & i didn't put any sim card in the phone whole night and automatic wifi was on which was only 17% battery.
again i charged the phone to 100% close the automatic wifi and insert a sim card
The result is like
After 3 hours 57 mins battery was at 52%
Screen take 49% total screen on time 16m 1s
Phone Idle 22% 3h 41m 29s
cell stand by 10% 3h 54m 55s
Android system 5% (CPU TOTAL 1m 47s *** CPU foreground 33s *** Keep awake 1m 19s)
I don't know what was the battery time before 4.3 update becuz when i buy this set it came with 4.3 and i bought this 3 days ago. Is this a battery problem or the phone problem or its the android ???? any type of help is welcome
Thanks in advance
The Galaxy Nexus is known for its not so great battery. It also just depends on how you use it. If you are playing games, watching videos, etc. it will drain fast. If you just check a few things here and there, it will last longer. That's common sense. But yes, compared to other phones, the Galaxy Nexus sucks with battery. Theres not much you can really do software wise. The best thing you can do is get a bigger battery or a spare battery. I have a charger pretty much wherever I am so battery isnt an issue for me. But if you are someone who is on the move all day, I would suggest a spare or an extended battery.
EDIT: Actually, looking at your screen time, you are getting a bit above average on phone idle. Right now, my phone idle is at 8%

Yes i read that and i planned to get extended battery but the cell eating the battery while screen is off. I'm just confused about the OS 4.3 i read alot about that after updating to 4.3 nexus 7 user experiencing of slow charging and battery draining but as you seen in attached pic the phone eating battery without any usage the total on screen time is 6 min and in 3hrs 57 min 48% battery gone ?? so in your opinion what is the prob is it OS, phone or the battery ?

Well I see in your screenshots that it looks like you don't have any cell service. What could be happening is that your phone is constantly searching for a connection, which could eat up a lot of battery.
best bet

youre best bet if rooted and unlocked is to install a custon kernel and underclock it to about 1000 mhz ... install dark themed apps or theme chooser theme also us a black wallpaper .. turn off 4g . ... turn off nfc when not in use .. make sure youre using the oem charger to charge the battery .. use wifi whenever possible .. also turn off anything like hotword detection that is constantly listening

The mobile service was on but data service was disable i received 2 calls and some texts msgs 2 but they are not long or didn't took the battery. All syncs were off and location to. But the battery is going down very badly. Please see new attached files of last night. The cell was at 87% battery and in the morning the battery was dead.
Try using something like Better Battery Stats or GSAM and see what they say is draining your battery.
With the current info given, I would lean toward thinking it is a hardware issue. Perhaps your battery doesn't properly hold a charge anymore.

Few hours ago i left for office the cell was on 14% charging and turn-off the cell and put it in pocket. After 1 hour when i reach to office i was trying to turn on the cell but the battery was dead and then i put it on charging and it start from 6% and turned on. I think the battery is not holding charging . The battery is in made in Korea and have NFC details on it. I think its the original battery but its not use able any more. i will try above mentioned widgets before changing the battery.
new screen shots
didn't use the phone and it ate all battery. Any guesses what's wrong with the phone???
need a fast reply.
Try updating the radios (I don't remember how to do it. U dial #something). Also, have gps and 4g turned off. Auto brightness turned on. If u have the Facebook app, get rid of it and just use the mobile site.

4g/3g are off and i ticked use only 2G network. Facebook app is deleted brightness is set to auto GPS every thing is off but mobile consuming battery without any usage.... im just confuse about that its the hardware prob or i have to flash some other rom?
bump! any 1 with solution ?
U really need to get better battery stats. It will tell u specifically what wake locks r causing the problem. Idk if using only 2g is a good idea, u may be burning battery with apps constantly searching for a data connection. Can u access wifi? That takes up less battery than data (3g or 4g). U may want to buy a new battery, they aren't that expensive. U can get one on amazon for like $15. If that doesn't work, I'd try flashing a different rom, maybe even a custom kernel.
I am still running 4.1.2 because I like it better than the newer versions and my battery life isn't bad. I usually get close to 2.5hrs of screen on time. More than a day of standby. Obviously, if I make a lot of calls I will get less battery life. I'm running eclipse rom with leankernel.

Today i flashed Cyanogen mode 10.1.3. i didnt flashed any google apps just to check what eat battery. When i flashed the ROM the battery was at 36%. I used the mobile for almost 1 hour and on screen time was 54min 37sec and battery left 16%. The cell eat total 20% battery in 1 hour continues on without mobile data network and 2G was on. Wifi GPS every thing was off and brightness was set to auto. At 16% battery i stop using mobile and after 30 mins i check mobile it eat 6% battery in 30 min without any usage. then i truns off the phone and after 30 mins i tried to turn on the cell the battery was dead. then i plugged in the charger and i turn the cell on. The battery charge start from 10% but instead of charging i start loosing battery. then i charged for almost 1 hour on 0% battery and took 5 hours to fully charged. My cell phone drain all battery over night under the usage of phone idle 73%. I'm just confuse about that its the battery issue or its cell phone problem. and my phone getting very hot from back left side. I just need a good developer advise if this is hardware issue then i'm gonna replace the cell phone and if its the battery issue and hardware is ok then i will get a new battery and continue using and 1 more thing my phone get little hot even its turned off from back left side and sim jacket side.
Bump! any suggestion ?
I doubt a developer can answer that question. Could be phone, could be battery. I would try a, new battery just cuz it's cheaper than a new phone. Maybe go back to stock and see if that helps. If not, call Verizon and complain, they may send u a refurbished unit.

I flashed ICS 4.0.4 but the highest stat on battery graph is phone idle. The battery was 36% in night and after 3hr 1min the cell was dead. then i put the cell on charge and checked the stats. Phone idle was on top 43% , then screen 30%, cell standby 19%, android system 7%, media server 2%, Android os 2%.

Try going to 4.3 via fastboot. With the flash-all.bat that will wipe everything. That might solve it

Randomly battery life dropped

Hey guys. So unfortunately better battery stats stopped functioning. Basically when I first got the phone the battery life was pretty good, close to 5 hours screen on time, decent standby battery life. Recently within an hour of screen on and phone off the charger for about 3 hours it could easily be at 50pct. I am currently running wicked version 6 with stock kernel. I haven't downloaded any new apps that have exacerbated it and seems to deliver about the same battery life on a clean install of a rom before restoring all of my apps.
Anyone else experience this? I've tried both my stock battery and another battery with the same results.
Auto sync off as always. No clue why the crazy drop in battery performance and light on the subject would be awesome.

It's in your mind. Wiping the battery stats did absolutely nothing for you. Guarenteed.
You could have a battery that went bad. Take it out of hte phone and look at it. Is it bulging anywhere on the surface on either side?
If so the battery is bad. Replace it.
If not, it coudl still be a bad battery. See if you can find someone else with an S4 who will let you test their battery for a few hours.
Also, try a full wipe and reinstall of the rom. And restore your apps in small groups over several hours. See if battery life suddenly suffers after installing a particular app.
You could could have a messed up setting in the ROM, a rouge app that isnt' showing up on BBS, a bad battery, etc etc etc.
Try cpu sleeper? Quad core version

I noticed a pretty significant reduction in battery life since I bought the device. I see people getting 5-7 hours of screen-on time; 4-5 days idle time, etc... I could easily do that when I first got it but after around 2 months, I'm lucky to have 2 hours screen on; I'll drop about 10% over an 8 hour period on idle... I've tried on fresh installs of both TW and AOSP; adding none of my own apps and the results are the same. Stock kernel, Ktoonsez kernel, various settings, etc... I've also noticed that sometimes, say the status bar will tell me I've got 92% battery left; I boot into recovery and TWRP tells me I've got 97% left. That, to me, sounds like the battery is going south so I'll be trying a new battery here soon.
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I've got a spare battery been the same experience and similar to cheetoh, I've done fresh installs, no apps and standard kernel with same results. I'll maybe pick up a zerolemon and see if that plus a fresh start helps because this is ridiculous. My battery life used to be amazing I loved it, best phone to date for me, 5+ hours screen on and would spend the day outta the house, come home late night and still have 30pct. Now, it's at 30pct by 1pm... No difference in how I use it, if anything I use it less now. I'll try these things again and probably pick up a zerolemon... Usually this isn't a problem but I'm going to have to be spending a few long days without access to a charger during the day, and don't wanna get screwed. Anyway thanks guys.

So this still happens even with a different battery?

battery life

hey all, recently my g3 has gotten terrible battery life, when it would usually take me through most of the day, it now only gives me like MAYBE 12 hours with less than 2 screen on time. today, i pulled it off the charger at 1230, by 4 it was down to 54%, and after 8 1/2 hours of sitting(i was at work) it was down to 15% and then it was dead less than an hour later. i'm unrooted(was rooted) and on the latest ota, i've done a factory data reset, re-rooted and unrooted and another factory data reset. it's just weird to me because about two weeks ago my husband's g-flex wouldn't hold the data connection, dropping in consistently for two weeks(bad enough that t-mobile sent him a replacement unit, and eventually put him in a note 3) and all the sudden my battery life went from decent, to complete crap.
You are having some major wake locks. Check your apps for "kept awake ". Usually Android os has a big number but dont worry about it. Here are my battery stats for reference.
Let us know what you find out and post screenshots of any abnormalities.
Edit: ive had bad luck with battery logging apps draining a lot of battery and not letting the phone go into deep sleep.

23 hours and still at 77%???? Is that with phone just sitting not in use in stand by?
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
Here is mine. Bluetooth is on from the time I unplug till I plug it in at night going to bed. Wifi is off during the day, so I'm on 4G LTE till I get home and turn data off and wifi on. So wifi is on for about 6-8 hours a day. I always typically keep sync off. Ill turn it on a few tomes throughout the day for a few mins to pull any emails and what-not, than I turn it right back off. It drains a lot of battery on mine just talking with apps trying to pull data from them constantly.
Location is also usually off until I need it. Today I had it on all day.
My screen brightness when I'm away from home is usually anywhere from say 60-95%. I HATE auto-brightness, just keeps it way to dark.
I also use greenify, and I have clean master auto clear memory upon screen off. So when I turn screen off, all apps I selected hibernate via greenify, and memory clears with clean master.
I'm also using trickster mod, and have a few kernel tweaks to smooth out the notorious G3 stutter which was from a thread on here. Lag solutions I think(ill grab link in a min) via Heisenberg's settings. Very stable and runs like a champ!
I am using g3 tweakbox, nothing fancy going on though or crazy.
Also, I do have seeder, which I was using before the trickster kernel tweaks, and it was working great, but I'm trying the trickster settings for now.
I HIGHLY recommend using the trickster mod kernel settings heisenberg suggested in his his thread. They are extremely stable, it makes phone snappy and very smooth, and I swear it made my battery life much better! Give it a shot, I swear you'll love it.
Here is lag solutions thread, 1st post is the kernel tweaks I use w/ trickster mod. It did help battery. Give it a shot, if it doesn't help you, or makes things for(which it wont, its very stable) you can always undo them just as fast and easy. Do all of them though, and do exactly, don't change numbers yet(if you're very comfy with it and do k is what you're doing with it), just give those a shot.

Because that screen shot of the screen on time is from a different day. You can see that if you look at the time/date and battery %.

didn't even think to check it...you'd have thought that would have been my first instinct with the issues my husband was having with his g-flex...but, battery life was my only issue with the phone, and it's up to where i'm content with it now, but in answer to your question -87dbm
Ok so I did a "test". I had bad signal- 1 bar 4g and it would hop to 2g quite often. In about 2h i drained 70% battery with tune in radio and the screen turned off. I couldnt screenshot it because my phone died :banghead:
My guess is that if you are working somewhere with crapy signal and you have push notifications coming in often it would kill your battery.
