What the hell happened to my fastboot? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wifes evo 4g started dropping data. Running cm9. Tried cm7. Same thing. Tried all of the sense stuff posted throughout... anyway. Decided to ruu and start fresh. I don't recall what the hboot originally was. Its been a hella long time since this thing was rooted. Read several threads where it said all the stuff needed to match up for ruu to work (hboot, radio, pri, etc.) Installed hboot 2.16 and all of the matching stuff. Ruu.exe failed with the usual usb failures. Read more. Found that the pc36img.zip ruu works better. Found one. Matched up all of the stuff again. Installed and earlier hboot. Again everything failed. Later I noticed on a thread that hboot 2.16 it not downgradeable. But, when I installed the older hboot, it distplayed the older versions of the hboot when vol.down + power.... wth? I've since then tried 2.16 again and also the 6.16 I found in another thread. I can install any of these and it shows the installed hboot. But I can't fastboot a pc36img.zip on any of them. When it runs through the green text where its looking for the .zip or .nbh, etc. it never picks them up. I've tried it with recoveries, ruu's, splash images, etc. No go. I've made sure all of the PC36IMG.zip files are spelled the right way and not .zip.zip, etc.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Any ideas? I just want to ruu the dang thing and start fresh. Is it possible that it has remnants of multiple hboots lingering around causing errors? I know this sounds stupid, and I agree. Its the craziest thing I've seen. I can flash images with joey krims flashimagegui, and can change radios, hboots etc when flashing the zips from within recovery, just can't run any PC36IMG.zips.
Any pointers

Hey jsp..., read your post...sounds like when you tried to flash the diff radios, boot.img, etc. you changed to s on by mistake preventing you from flashing th pc36img. verify? you should just be able to flash a ruu.exe from your pc after achieving s-on to be completly stock and re root from there. however, if youre re rooting you dont need to go that far as to achieve s on. so it sounds like you are doing the right thing...it just sounded like what i did by flashing a new radio and loosin root and not able to do anything. what hboot do you hav now? can you see any watermark or s off? if no then you lost your privleges and have to do a root method that supports what hboot you have. let me know some more details.

this is crazy. im s-off, and still rooted. i still havent been able to flash any ruu. i've just about said screw it, but thought i would play around. cant really screw it up.
i can flash recovery flashable files from cwm, twrp, and ra.
i can "fastboot flash zip name.ext" from cmd in windows 7 as long as i'm running hboot 0.76.
i JUST CANNOT flash a freaking PC36IMG.zip from hboot. none. not a damned one. no splash. no recovery. no ruu, no damned thing.
the green text just goes right on past it. doesnt even slow down to smell it. i cant figure it out. i have tried every single hboot listed in caulkin(sp?)' thread. every danged one of them.
i did however get a modified ruu to work. i took the 4.54.651.1 ruu and inserted hboot 0.76 inside it so i could maintain remote fastboot abilities. it worked, except i was still s-off, had that hboot, and had no superuser at all.
although i would like to know what is causing this, i cant really complain i guess. i cannot get into a hboot-loop because it tries to reflash a PC36IMG.zip each time it cycles. it scrolls right on passed it and gives me the recovery option. but, on any hboot other than 0.76 i dont have an option to flash anything. again,

Unroot problems, please help!!!!!!

Ok, for the background:
I rooted with: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 And I have tried unrooting with the method there.
Unrooting with: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141 (and I have tried others).
The problem is that if I run Unrevoked S-on, none of the PC36IMG's will load and give the error "main version is older". I can run the PC36IMG (and I have tried MANY different versions of that) with S-off, but then since there is no longer a recovery, I am unable to flash Unrevoked S-on. I have tried many RUU's but if S-on, they won't load..only with S-off.
So I've tried doing this with recovery, without recovery, with S-on and off, flashing PC36IMG's, flashing RUU's....nothing works. I'm running out of time to mail this phone back and I'm pretty much out of ideas.
If I were to rename Unrevoked S-on to PC36IMG would that work in the bootloader, or would the phone flash the data to the wrong area and brick the phone for good?
I have searched through many threads and I think I haven't gotten any advice because people generally aren't looking through those threads if they are already rooted, or already good with unrooting.
Ok, I think that's about it. I have Hboot 2.02, hardware 0003.
Thank you So much, in advance!
The PC36IMG in that thread is most likely outdated. Run the s-on tool and then grab the latest RUU from HERE and run it from your desktop and you should be in the clear.
Thanks, I'll give it a try. I haven't downloaded RUU's from that site I know for sure.
That's just a mirror site that drmacinyasha set up for files and such.

Well it is nice that each one has an MD5 to check. Odds are that I've already tried these RUU's, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
That RUU doesnt even see the phone.
Well I tried a 3.7 PC36IMG file before, and went ahead and tried it again. For some reason this time, it actually worked. So there must have been some issue with the original rooting...or the file transfer before. I have no idea. Whatever, it actually worked and it's back to stock again.
Thanks for your help!

[Q] Removing a rom, fixing a mistake, and getting to normal

I really have this huge problem that's been really bugging me all week and i cant seem to concentrate with it over my head. I am new to rooting devices and i was a little ahead of myself recently... I finally rooted my phone and over my excitement i just had to add custom roms to my Evo 4g, i didnt really understand what i was doing, i mainly followed instructions to most sites, mainly cyanogen, and got the latest version of cyanogen, i had troubles starting it up at first, it was stuck on the bootup screen for cyanogen (droid on skateboard with spark flying around) and it kept going black and reloading, i didint know what to do, so i took the battery out after a hour of waiting then i wiped my drive in fear of bricking my phone (i know i wasnt thinking) i did not make a back up of my previous point of time where i actually practically running stock, and i am still upset at that mistake, after doing a factory reset from the clockwork recovery, cyanogen finally booted up, but was missing alot of things, i.e. android market and so on... im now wanting to go back to stock and i have already got Son somehow, can anyone help walk me through this, id very much appreciate it!!

The reason that you were missing things in Cyanogen, is because you didn't flash GAPPS (google apps), which are things like Market, Gmail etc. If you already have S-on, and you're sure you want to go back to stock, unrooted, then it shouldn't be too bad for you. One way would be to download a PC36IMG.zip, place it on the root of your sd card, boot into the bootloader (power+voldown), and it will flash the factory ROM for you. You could also run RUU, from your PC. Plug phone into PC with USB cable, and run the RUU from your computer. Either of those methods should work for you, and get you back to stock. Here are a couple links that might help you.

Thank you so much for a quick reply, it really helps, but one more question, i tried to run pc36img, but it keeps saying it failed because a older version was present, also, sorry for asking another, but i have also wondered this other method with all these other download links, there is alot and how would i know what one to use?
also! i tried running the first download and it keeps saying that my phone isnt connected even if it is? does it need to be in debugging mode or what?
you have to flash most recent gapps for market.

Do you know what hboot version you have? If not, boot into the bootloader (power+voldown), and it will say hboot version at the top I believe. If you have an older hboot version, I'm pretty sure you want an older PC36IMG or RUU. If you notice, they all list different software versions (3.70, 3.30, 3.29, 3.26 etc). The 3.70 is the newest, and I believe you'd use that for the newest hboot versions (2.10 or 2.02) The older hboot's (.76, .93, .97) I believe you'd use either 3.29 or 3.30. Someone please step in and correct me if I'm wrong or misinformed. I'm also not sure if you need to be in debugging mode, I would try putting it in debugging mode for sure (I've never had to unroot, but have read up on how to do it) If you are getting the main version is older when running the PC36IMG, I would try a different PC36IMG, one with older software, 3.29 or 3.30. I've read many times of people needing to try different ones before they got it to flash. That's why there are so many on there, because different phones may require different versions, I believe.

You sir [user above me] are correct. I have linked ya to a site with a lot of RUUs, and they list the version number.

Download the RUU, boot into the bootloader [turn off then hold vol down while phone turns on] then select fastboot, then run the exe, and follow zeh instructions.

Which PC36IMG or RUU did you try? (which software) You may need to try a couple different ones on there.

Please help with unroot, i messed up and and going crazy here.

Ok, I rooted with unrevoked a long time ago. Broke my screen and need to unroot. I followed the unroot unrevoked guide as closely as I could, but the rom in the link was not found. So I downloaded a different ruu.zip of factory rom, don't ask me which one, because I can't find the link anymore, but currently here is where I stand. Hboot kept saying that the img was older or something, and wouldn't flash. So I did a stupid thing and pushed the zip with clockwork. So now I'm running s-on with clockwork recovery and a stock unrooted rom. So, I tried the next thing, downloaded an 3.7 ruu .exe and tried to run that from windows, but it gives me an hboot usb connection error f*ucking **** 1 thing after another.
This is the unrooting guide I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
I got s-on, and tried that pc36img but it wouldn't work, originally. Before I went on to screw things up.
I've been at this for hours, something that should have taken 10 minutes if I wasn't an idiot, or bad links, or what ever. Can someone tell me or point me in the right direction, of what to do here, preferably not to a 2 year old thread with outdated links? What should I do?`
A List of android stock RUU zips with radio, pri, recovery all in one would be great, but I give up on trying to find that, its buried or does not exist.
I found this list http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs but its just the rom not everything.
So here is where my phone stands
S-ON
Hboot .97
Clockwork recovery 2.5.0.7<<<<<<
Android version 2.2.2
Build number 4.54
PRI 1.90_003
Angrychair420 here is a stock RUU that I know is good you should be able to run the RUU from windows.
http://geekfor.me/evo/ruu/evo_ruu_1326511/
thanks, that says its img version 1.32.651.1, assume thats safe to use. I assume thats andoid 3.26 which is what came on my phone. Ugh I'm in over my head. Why did my screen have to break, i was totally happy with CM7 and everything the way it was.
what if I wipe my data and caches, remove SD card, put on a PC36IMG.zip and boot the phone into hboot, will it still give me the older version error?
edit: the link you gave me gives me the same error as the other ruu.exe:
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your android phone
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again
Possibly but I did have to return mine for repair and I know that using it as a .exe file trough windows I had no problem. Not sure about making it into a PC36IMG.zip file though I have not tried it that way.

It might. There are 3 PC36IMG files in the first "My Links" link in my signature. You can try them in order if you'd like, if you get the "main version is older" message, but if the first two don't work, the last one definitely will.
Thanks cpt, about to give them a try. Sigh man, this is frustratingly harder than rooting :-D If it was as easy as doing the s-on and copy the pc36img.zip to the root of sd and booting into hboot and DONE, I would of been having a much better day.
Try the latest RUUs from this link man:

yes, they are basically the same method I used in my OP from xda forums.
On to captain_throwbacks second ruu.
Just to make sure, this all isn't in vain, and make you all hate me, after applying one of these successfully, my recovery should go back to factory and no longer be clockwork, right? or wrong, because I'm starting to think I am. But won't taking your device in for service with clockwork be a dead giveaway that it was rooted.
I think I'm just going to go get a new phone for a $100 deductible at this point. and replace the screen my self on my old one and keep it as a backup/test device. Thanks for all the help, but I am surrendering :-D hopefully I can reroot this thing again with unrevoked, since my hboot is still .97 and fix the screen my self.
It generally doesn't matter if its rooted. I've never unrooted since launch day. And I've had 3 screen replacements, 3 speaker rwolacements , a bezel replaced, and camera lens cover replaced (last time, I dropped it off with ICS), about to go get my 4th screen (just cracked it again lol).
Sorry for your experience/frustration.

well last stupid question i promise, since i still have clockwork isntalled, i can just restore my CM7 backup, but how do i get s-off back, re unrevoked it i assume?
If your'e worried about the warranty thing, just flash a stock rooted rom, or use a phone repair service. i see three or four repair places on craigslist (granted, that you live in a large city).
yeah no worries. Got it back to S-OFF, and CM7 back on it, just going to fix the screen my self, ordered one for $15.
thread can be locked, deleted, or what ever.
Seriously. Dude, isn't there a sprint store near you?. Just take it in. Put a stockish rom on it if you're that worried about it. They should replace it for free.

Incredible to stock help

After many hours of reading threads and trying different things, I am posting this.
I have HTC Incredible
Incredible XC Ship S-On
HBoot 0.92.0000
Radio: 2.15.10.07.07
Recovery: CWM v2.5.0.5
Was running Cyanogenmod 7
All was great with this phone (about 1 year) until it randomly started to constantly reboot 1 month ago. I tried to follow some other threads by downloading PB31IMG files, adding them to FAT32 sd card and running in HBOOT. I tried first upgrading the cyanogenmod7, then going to froyo 2.2 and a GB one. Some threads mentioned changing radio version first, tried that but nothing.
When I load PB31Img files from SD, froyo 2.2 says something along the lines of main version old.
When I try to change radio, PB31Img starts to load but does not let me continue and returns to HBoot with no new radio.
I am really not familiar with any phone and I would like to get this back to working. Any help is appreciated, but please be very clear. All I want is this phone to go back to stock, unrooted is fine. Anything to make it work.
Thanks,

Since you're s-on, it's useless to try flashing radios. You're very limited as to what you can do, as you're finding out. Your best bet would be to try the latest RUU (also known as PB31IMG.zip) from here:
http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/
You should be able to flash that through HBOOT even though you are s-on, as it is a stock image.
If you can't get any of the stock images to flash, the next line of attack would be to upgrade HBOOT and unlock the bootloader using HTCdev, as described in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600904
If you follow the instructions for downgrading, you will be able to flash the stock image of your choice. Then, re-lock the bootloader using HTCdev and you will be back to stock. Of course, if you follow the whole guide and get s-off, you'll have a lot more options of ways to tackle problems like this.

Thanks for the reply. I will try the first option, but one thing I have noticed before is that when I use the adb method, I can't get "adb devices" command to work. It outputs "List of devices attached". In my device manager, I have ADB Interface ->HTC Bootloader with the android USB driver installed... Not sure if you can help on this.

That could be caused by having adb or the drivers improperly set up on your computer, or it could be because you didn't have USB debugging enabled in the phone's settings. You could try booting your phone into recovery and seeing if you can access it with adb from there if all else fails.

[Q] Radio borked? Please help!

I am at a loss of things to try with this Evo which I have no history of.
After initially being stuck at 4-triangles. I managed to flash the ENG 0.76 bootloader. Found out that:
S-OFF
Radio: 2.15.00.09.08 -some sort of Chinese radio?
I've tried it many different ways with RUUs, fastboot and PH36IMG, but RADIO_V2 repeatedly fails to flash.
I can also flash any recovery, but it fails to load, getting stuck at the Evo splashscreen, so that is also a problem. Most partitions flash nicely in fastboot. A successful system flash will result in a stuck Evo splashscreen, though.
Is there any way out of this? Perhaps by using one of the elevated commands in the ENG bootloader? I don't know how to get ADB running either, since I'm stuck in fastboot and have no idea whether USB debugging was on earlier. I do have a Linux box if that helps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Its a PC36IMG* not PH36IMG

I might need to clarify a little.
I have absolutely zero history of this phone. None whatsoever.
1. Currently on ENG 0.76. I received the phone with no access to the bootloader, stuck at the HTC screen with triangles in each corner. I flashed the ENG 0.76 hboot via fastboot and that's what I'm on right now. Works fine.
2. I have no idea how it got to this radio version. Seems like a Chinese UIM radio. Got the phone from a friend who got it from an auction in Burma.
4. Flashing any radio in hboot will result in [see attachment]. Flashing in fastboot- see 2nd screenshot above. Fails either way, and I've tried multiple radios. Tried under multiple hboots, too. No dice.
5. Stock or custom recovery will flash fine but will get stuck at the white splashscreen if I try to enter it.
6. Bootloader is perfect. Works like a charm.
The only idea I can come up with is using an elevated command in fastboot oem which could reformat my radio partition somehow. I don't know whether I have ADB either. I have some experience with diag mode and JET on the HOX.
Any ideas?
Have you tried an RUU? That may work and give you an entire stock unrooted and fully working system. If not, try flashing a different radio. That one could be out of date or even corrupt.

I've tried countless RUUs, both Froyo and GB, Windows exe and PC36IMG. Nothing works. All partitions flash fine BUT the radio.

Is it possible for you to update the hboot to something 2.10? It may be the bootloader is preventing that flash.

Obviously this is not the only hboot I've tried. I've gone to 2.10, even 2.18, tried there, come back down to ENG, tried again; it's just repeatedly failing. I'm not giving up hope due to the simple fact that the bootloader works and there MUST be a way out. Like I mentioned earlier I'm thinking one of the high level commands, but I have no idea what to do with them. Could anybody lead me in the right direction?
Flashing the engineering Hboot 0.76 will only work on the older Evos with the older hardware partitions without causing permanent damage. If you have one of the newer ones, then your phone is already done.

I've only recently put 0.76 on after trying the newer Hboot versions. I found out that I was on 2.02 initially when I had the 4 triangles- I had to RUU because there was no accessible Hboot to fall back upon anyway. I then found a 2.02 img and flashed that through fastboot, which is when the bootloader actually started working. I'm using 0.76 now because it just seems to work better with commands.
What exactly does "permanent damage" imply in this case? Because the problem remains either way- RADIO_V2 fails to flash. All other partitions have not a single problem between them.
Is there a way where I can completely clear out the emmc, repartition it correctly and take steps from there?
At this point of time I'm rather certain mine is an older HW revision. How do I find out anyway?
The newer hardware started with Hboot 2.02 while the old ended with 0.97. You would never OTA to 2.02 from 0.97, but have went directly to 2.10 unless you flashed a Hboot with 2.02 or ran a RUU with that Hboot version. I actually made a post about a year and a half ago on how to tell, so if you phone ever boots again, I could point you to that post.
Right now, it's good that Hboot 0.76 seems to be doing something, but I'm afraid the radio may have been flashed with something that did not want to be there.
