I've kinda noticed this more than other phones I've messed with in the past, so I feel pretty confident saying the ROM's produced seem very similar. With the exception of MIUI, all AOSP, AOPK, and all OTA releases feel very generic. Of course Kang has a different theme setup and tweeker than say CM10 or another AOSP based ROM.
Coming from the photon, it was almost like going from the garden of eden to a desert, considering the Photon had "kitchen sink" ROMs with touch based installers that could install or not install multiple launchers, kernels, mods, tweaks, system bases, etc.
So I guess my question is:
Will there be any variation in design, or will it be another couple of months of "here's my custom ROM that's the same as the one before me, but this time it has a *insert tweak here* too"
I'm sorry for ripping on the developers, but I'm tired of seeing " I tried to keep the stock look/not "over bloat" it" when I'm sure there's a demand for better looking ROMs. Stock should not be a standard.

make one. or, flash a theme. flashable mods maybe? there are lots of different launchers available in the different markets. what else do you want?
You obviously bought the wrong phone. The gnex is for those that want the pure android expierence. Even when you plan on ROM'img that's what your gunna see period with a stock android phone. Most if not all people here like that ... that's why we bought the phone.

I sounds to me that you are looking to find the type of pre-themed ROMs that were very popular in the not too distant past. While I will agree that many of the ROMs may appear similar, the differences are no longer focused on aesthetics and more on performance tweaks and also on additional options and settings. You may have noticed that many of the ROMs now support a theme engine which allows you to pick any of the hundreds of themes available in the market and color it any way you'd like. There are several different kernels available and even a few launchers as well.

Hey All! Just got my gn a couple weeks ago and I love it! I must say though I'm a little surprised at how few roms there are out for it. I know it's new and all but still it HAS been out since last fall! Is this how long it normally takes to build a fan base with these phones? I'm not complaining. I just found it curious, coming from the Nexus S to owning the new Android flagship that there would still be such relatively little support by now. Any takers on the topic? I'd Be interested to hear your input!
Oh By the way, I'm in no way bashing the phone or this forum. I think both are outstanding. Just making conversation lol

Why do we need more roms? The current ones provide everything we need.
Same complaints about the epic touch, six months later there's a ridiculous amount of ROMs to flash.
it's better to have a few very good roms than a lot of roms that are not so good.
I just counted 25 ROMs in the dev section. Should our phones be walking to the store for us?
What more do you need??
Sent from the future.
Well take a look at the nexus s forum. there's a rom for everyone! One Can never have too much choice! And again it was just a question. No Need to get all defensive.
less roms equals the nest selection
I think the reason is that a couple of roms got such a headstart in users and features, the devs don't see a demand. Sometimes it seems like over half the GNex owners use aokp, myself included.
For me it's surprising to see so little in flashable mods. I'd love to try some roms, but they don't have a customizable lock screen or notification toggles. To me those are must haves, so I stick with aokp. Maybe when cyanogenmod finally goes stable, devs can use it as a base for great roms.

I can see what you mean. I also came from the Nexus S, and I did notice that there are a lot more ROMS for it. But it seems like there is no low quality roms for the Gnex. It really is a casse of quality over quantity. And we also have some groundbreaking roms here, such as paranoidandroid.
Quality v.s. quantity.
Are you looking for ROMs built from ASOP or ROMS that are just a klang of another with skins?
IMHO, ASOP or CM9 is all that a person needs. Then add what you want and ignore the rest.
I think as far as ROMS go we have hit a plateau. Until the next release (assuming there are new features) nearly everything is available over the ROMS we currently have. I can see a few kernels coming up with new ideas but I think ROMS are as up to speed as we can expect for a while

Gotta be careful what you say around here. I had opened up a similar thread where I was "complaining" about the Rom Support for the nexus and got flamed big time as effect.
Just watch out around here.. they don't like opinions
But coming from a sgs 2 I also was dissapointed to not find hundreds of different Roms for the nexus as there were for the galaxy s 2. Also every Rom on the nexus looks about the same and has about the same Features while for the galaxy they really differed.
I'm on bamf with bond Kernel and love them. But also waiting for an update from both since weeks....

wait till jelly bean comes out
we have less ROMs coz they're all based on ICS , nexus S has various gingerbread versions too, not to mention it's been there for quite some time. as someone already said, basically we have everything we need with the current ROMs, except ParanoidAndroid, the only new idea could be a port of sense or tw for example, but then there's the same problem with drivers, certain hardware not working and so on.. Some people think for instance, that buying HTC or Samsung devices will give them more options, sense/TW roms and aosp/miui , and it does sound good in theory , but the reality is that u will always end up with a buggy AOSP experience (there's always something that's not working right-been through many devices and it's the same story all over again).
As a conclusion, people should make a little research before getting a device, if u like what sense or TW (or any other custom UI) offers u , then u should consider that device, if u want a real AOSP experience then the nexus is ur best choice. Not to mention that if u have a fetish to change the way ur UI looks u can always get a 3rd party launcher, AOSP handles it best coz sense or TW occupy more RAM and running a market launcher on top of all this just makes it worse.
yeah a lot of you guys make sense. I guess with all the options on the nexus s I had become a bit of a crack flasher. I just enjoyed trying out new and different roms and playing with them. but as someone just said here earlier all the ones here are pretty much the same. I'm using aokp now and I like it. I just also like other stuff too lol
thanks for your opinions everyone! keep em coming! great reading
I agree. I miss my galaxy s2 i9100. That phone has the most development. I wanna give you a reason for more development... it was expensive but it was launched everywhere in the world. Second you can run 4 different (base) types of roms.
1) touchwiz gingerbread
2) cm7 aosp based gingerbread
3) touchwiz ICS
4) cm9 aosp based ics roms
So you can see how there are always roms to flash. I loved flashing early builds as well. So I encourage more devs to build different and unique roms rather than taking features from other roms. Thanks

Consider it a blessing. Towards the dying days of the SE X10, most of the renowned devs had moved on and then we had a million different variations of every kind of rom you could think of. We had heaps of MIUI roms which were all identical but with a different theme. Same story with Cyanogen roms.
There's really no need to have a plethora of roms because they all end up being the same. Its better to have a selection of high quality roms to pick from.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
in my experience most of the roms available are just variations of stock **** by some kid who learned to deodex and root. because what the world really needs is another ****ty rom based on sense.
there are no GB roms, no roms based on some vendor-ruined stock build. just AOSP. there are few bugs, just awesome features. you don't need a ton of roms when you have that.

I'm really surprised at the lack of good aosp roms. Back in the nexus one days or even nexus s there was a plethora of Roms. For a developer device that's world wide you'd figure it would get more attention. The toro gets some good Roms but the maguro is pretty sparse. Feel free to share you opinions on the matter.

Are you saying all the roms suck? Why don't you make a better one then.
How often do you need to change roms when they're all based on the same rom?
So let me get this straight, you contribute nothing for free, you like using things for free, yet you like to complain about something that is offered to you for FREE. I swear, the nerve of some people...

3/10 for ridiculous thread.

Well to be fair.... during those "Android" days. Those ROMs weren't really ROMs. They were just themed ROMs, which are now being featured as themes for existing ROMs and/or Theme Manager.
Lack of AOSP Roms? ummmm.....
1) CyanogenMod 9 / 10
2) AOKP
3) AndroidME
4) Gummy
........ etc
If there is such a lack, why don't you learn how to make a ROM and show people "how it's done?" since you're saying that there is a lack of good ROMs. Go make one, please. OP is most likely trolling.
I'd rather have good ROMs with actual development than a bunch of amateur skinned ROMs with some dumb tweaks anyone could do in 10 minutes.
There are TOO MANY roms for gnexus. Right now, there is little development done on JB outside CM10, AOKP and parandroid (not counting the not-yet-released development work).
Too many rom "cooks" and themers flooding the development section with 99% stock roms with a few added tweaks like APM, beat audio, init.d tweaks, etc. I'm not saying it's bad, but it's definitely redundant.
Going to close this before it gets too heated.

I'm not a PRO in Android but still, why do some people say "Stock is the way to go"? Because of stability? Less bugs?
it just works.
Because a group of coders have decided what you can or cannot do; took away your freedom. As such, we are human beings and like being confined within boundaries.
So some people like going back to stock.
If you have chosen android, root and go custom and just muck about and explore and learn; the possibilities are endless

me personally, it isn't worth trading speed and stability for a few extra buttons. but this is all opinions. maybe you should try a few things and form your own opinion of it and not worry about it.

Because no feature in a custom ROM is worth the time it will take constantly set it up, troubleshoot, endless flashing, and OCD like symptoms.
Stock JB is just too good to mess with it. I unlock and root my devices once I stop getting official updates. I have tried many ROMs, kernels on my GNEX and Nexus 7 and I always go back to stock.
Locked bootloader, no root, encrypted. It just feels good. Plus, if you purchase a new device, all you would have to do is login to your Google account and voila!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Stock ROMs are great, when JB first came out and before there were AOSP builds I rocked a rooted + BB stock image for a few weeks and thought it was great. I was able to fill in a lot of the missing ROM customization with apps (quiet hours, battery %, toggles, etc...). Smooth, fast, and reliable.
At the end of the day however a ROM built from AOSP source with some tweaks on top is the way to go for me.
Because stock is actually a really good stable feature-rich software package.
Stable, fast, no weird scripts nor heavily themed just pure android experience
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
for me, it just worked. Nothing had to be fiddled with and no headaches about small details. Being able to enjoy your device for what it is, is such a great feeling compared to constantly flashing updates and whatnot.
I run TSF shell launcher so no need for UI tweeks and stock is fine although I do mix it up with a Franco kernel.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I love stock ROMs. I wish more devs would simply tweak and compile straight aosp ROMs instead of cramming them full of features. Variety is a nice novelty but it wears off quickly reboot after reboot and fc after fc.
And on the same note I know its personal preference, but stock android looks so sleek and clean now that all themes seem just plain ugly. And it seems like most devs either include the theme engine or do some theming of the ROM itself. Just too much going on and affects performance/stability in my opinion.

LAst time i pointed out this fact, that i like stock more than custom rom (on GNEX), i was told to get iCab and to buy Iphone....
I like stock... Rooted, so i can remove search bar (only that). I can customize in perfect way, without obligation to flash constant updates, without getting fc-s, without taking care which kernel fits best etc...
Is it just me or does the call quality seem to be lower on aosp roms? I have ran a couple and it seemed the same for them both, as compared to touch wiz?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I felt the same way when I switched from stock TW to CM10.1. I'm curious to hear if others feel the same way.
Well, the thing is they're based on versions of Android that are not yet available for this phone. So the developers are creating functionality from scratch is some cases.
I believe it is a bit unfair to compare a Sprint overlay (TW) that has a monster development team being paid to developers who give their free time to offer users a taste of something that may never be offered by Sprint.
There is no need to create a thread like this, if you don't want to run it. Don't ... move on to another ROM.
Just say'n
I have tried a lot of different rom's including aosp roms and touchwiz roms. It seems most of them look and feel the same and I am not putting down any roms not saying there bad. The differences are whatever mods the Devs have added to their Roms. Usually the Dev will add features that he/she wants or needs to make that ROM suited to them and we benefit from said addons.
I find your question slightly funny though. "They look and feel the same yet Hyperdrive is my favorite" if there were no differences you'd be running bone stock and it would be your favorite.
I know you didn't mean anything by it I'm just throwing that out there.

what's the difference
I thought about that after I added the hyperdrive rom...lol They just all feel the same I just like how hd is laid out ..
Call me crazy, but ever since I followed Blinds old MIUI builds, I think it was in the HTC Inspire, I've been in love.
I had run MIUI in the past on prior devices, but MIUI was still in its infancy then. By MIUI V4, I was hooked. I could care less about the snide remarks about how similar to iOS it is. The functionality MIUI provides was always a step ahead, for me, than everything else out there. That's not the case anymore, but I still love all the little things MIUI puts into the UI. Even the screw-ups that have always existed.
I never have the music player display lyrics, but if I'm bored I turn it on from time to time and get a good chuckle out of the results. I was listening to Angel by Aerosmith the other day and it was displaying Sarah Mclahlan. :banghead:
