Hello everyone,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S III from T-mobile, running CM 10. Since last week I've been having trouble with it after I updated the CM 10 rom. For some weird reason I cannot receive calls while I am using my data connection, incoming calls are always sent to voicemail. I tried the ##DATA# code to try to turn off the DDTM mode but later on I read that I cannot access this menu unless I am on stock ROM, I tried to flash T-mobile's stock ROM with Odin but the process kept getting stuck with no progress at all.
I kept looking and I came to the idea that my problem was my IMEI, which when I checked, was 0. I restored my IMEI and now I have my IMEI number and everything but I my internet connection is still stuck on EDGE and I cannot receive any calls. I even tried updating my modem I tried several different T-mobile modems for my phone and none of them can take my phone off EDGE.
then I tried changing the network type with the *#*#4636#*#* the actual network type option that it has selected is WCDMA preferred, I went ahead and selected LTE/GSM/CDMA but that option doesn't stay!!! I am going nuts here!!! I want my 4G connection back, I have tried everything with no luck at all.
I just hope that somebody out there has gone through this and found a solution cause I am losing all my hope and I don't want to take my phone to T-mobile since I cant flash it back to stock rom.
If anyone here could please help out I will be extremely thankful.
Thanks in advance.

It's more to it than simply injecting your IMEI. You have to inject it, back it up, and then restore it.
Well i had to enter my IMEI manually to generate a .txt to write it to my phone because the one i had before was corrupted cause it was 0.
Was thete any other step that I skiped doing?
I figure i wouldnt make a back up before injecting my IMEI manually cause i didnt have one.
Am I screwed??

Yes, you skipped two complete steps. There's three steps, again, Injection, Backup, and then Restore. Go back to Peoplearmy's thread and follow it completely.

I've shown him an easy way to find answers to future questions he may have. Now stop telling me what to do.
But on a serious note, the search function on XDA works extremely well. If I ever need to find something, I type it in that box and 95.7342% of the time, it pops right up in front of me.
Search is a beautiful thing.

I have actually searched quite a lot since I've been having this problem from a few weeks now. Only thing is that whenever i find a possible solution i doesnt fix it since it seems it is something else. I am trying now to do peoplearmy's post to see if this one does the trick. The first time i put manually my IMEI i did it following a different thread so I hope this one fixes the problem.

Poeplearmy's post is the industry standard for IMEI recovery. Just remember that there are more steps than just the first post. I'm sure you'll get it worked out.

I did this method, I cant actually check if my 4g is working since unfortunately at home I always get EDGE so I will check later when I go out.
I have a question, I did check on the dialer my IMEI but I saw a picture of somebody on peoplearmy's thread and their IMEI included a /0# at the end and I realized that mine doesn't.
Does the IMEI need to have that /#0 at the end in order to work or is it ok? I just want to make sure since I can only check my connection speed when I go out.
thank you

As far as I know, your IMEI should just be a simple number. If the IMEI you're seeing on the software matches your IMEI on the back of your phone, then you're good in that department. If you also followed the steps for the backup and restore. Then you're good. The backup is important, because it allows for the restore. The restore has some (stuff) that adds all of the settings back to allow you to connect to 4G. Does that make sense? It's a three-step process when you lose your IMEI for the first time.
Inject, backup, restore. It has to be done, because the restore really does add something back to make it work properly.
Should you lose it again in the future, you can simply just restore and be right back.

DOC can you assist me as well? I restored my IMEI but I need help getting data back.
Even in places where I normally get a very strong 3G SPRINT signal, my phone will roam. Just started today after I flashed DeviantXone ROM with 3.4 Linux Kernel (test build from yesterday). Anyone have any suggestions to fix this issue? Thanks a lot.
Try restoring a nandroid, backing up your IMEI (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30682712) and then reflashing your ROM. The back up may not be needed as sometime the problem fixes itself. It's happened to me a few times and tends to happen upon first flashing a ROM but usually when I reflash all is good. However it is a good practice to have your IMEI backed up in case this happens.

I have a nandroid my old ROM (Liquid Smooth); so I should first backup my current ROM (DeviantXone), then restore Liquid Smooth, backup my IMEI, then restore DeviantXone, then restore my IMEI.... correct?? How do I backup my IMEI and how do I get to it to restore it? Thanks!

That should work, and just follow the steps listed in that thread on backing up your IMEI. You have to use adb, if you don't know how to use adb, go to the Q&A thread on this subforum and read the ADB workshop thread.

What did you do? I have tried about 6 different Roms, multiple flashes of the same roms, different kernels and no matter what I do I can't connect to sprint... Let me give you a background... I had CMW installed andI flashed hyperdrive. At first it booted fine and everything looked good but after a reboot the phone would just boot loop. So I reflashed it with a different kernel but this time no network, and I flashed almost any rom I could get my hands on from AOSP to the other samsung ones.... Please anything to help??

I just nandroid back to Liquid Smooth (was on DeviantXone prior) and let the phone settle in for about 5min and BAM it connected to Sprint's network. Then I re-flashed DeviantXone once I got home and all was good! Didn't even have to do all the steps that "sevenpioverthree" posted.

This may have worked but you really should read up on backing up your IMEI, it has saved many people and if you know how to use ADB, which you should learn how eventually as it is a powerful tool, it's actually really simple.
The fact is that what you did was restore to a time when your IMEI was in a good state but in the case that all is lost and you have to revert to stock using the Odin method, then having your IMEI backed up is a good thing and again it only takes a second to do and stays on your phone between ROMs
what to do now?
I'm having the same problem except my imei isn't gone. When i go to my about phone it says my phone number is 000-000-0016, my min is 0000000016. Service state: no service, mobile network type: UNKNOWN:0 I've flashed every ROM , kernel, and modem combo possible and nothing changes this?
There's a dial / programming code you can use to reactivate your phone (make sure you're on wife and stock rom)

To update my Prl and profile i have to be on a stock ROM as well right? Also I'm on a sprint phone flashed to metro, how is it going to affect that? Besides the obvious of having to re root and flash.

Roaming isn't unlimited. They terminate your contract when it gets to a certain point

Technically, we don't have unlimited roaming. According to the Sprint Terms and Conditions (a lovely document, excellent prose):
The primary use of your Device must be for domestic purposes within the Sprint-owned network. Domestic means use in the 50 United States and U.S. Territories (except Guam). Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes. The display on your device may not always be on and will not indicate whether you will incur roaming charges. You can monitor usage online through My Account. Roaming is not available with single-band phones, or to customers who reside or whose primary use is outside an area covered by the Nationwide Sprint Network. Sprint may limit or terminate service if you move outside of the Sprint owned-network.

Now, they really won't terminate you for downloading that 301 MB file while roaming, but if you're racking up Gigs after Gigs on roaming, you might be kicked off.
Just a FYI.

I don't think you're totally understanding what it is that we're talking about. Yes the phone is "roaming" but theres no network connection. In other words the phone has no service at all (thats what my problem is) but if your phone is roaming a lot, even in spots where you should have good signal then I'd look into fixing that.
Ok, So I have an Epic 4g flashed to Cricket, I have made everything work(mms, test, talk, ect.) I have it on Android 4.1.2. My problem is I only get 3G and its not very dependable. I live in Phoenix, A.Z. Anyone have any ideas on what to do?

I don't use a MVNO, so I am not sure which regular troubleshooting steps would clear away your carrier settings. (I'm thinking using EFS Clear in Odin is the only concern, but that is sometimes needed for modem issues.)
Based off that rom's thread, you must be using the NS4G modem. Since your issue is with connectivity:
Perform a CWM backup of your current setup.
Flash an Epic modem rom and FC09 modem. (You can flash the modem using CWM. There's a thread in the dev forum w/ links.)
Try testing connection again.
I'd normally tell a Sprint Epic user to boot into FC09 multiboot and update profile & PRL, but I don't even think the PRL update would work for you. I'd then say, start from scratch by using Odin to flash FC09 with repartition checked. If they still had issues with connectivity, then I'd recommend using EFS clear in Odin when reflashing either just the FC09 modem or the entire FC09 tar.
Because you are on another carrier, I'm weary of suggesting you use Odin so quickly. If you haven't already, dive into your phone settings and document your carrier specific info you changed to get it working. This way, if you end up doing something that resets your original changes, then you can reconfigure it.
So give the suggestion that is listed above a try.
Since I'm very much a noob myself, I'm only tossing this out to possibly trigger an idea for someone else: Would perhaps the issue lie in the Build.prop or one of those similar files? I've poked around so many of them I can't remember which hold what tidbits of info... I know the Build.prop holds most of the primary carrier info, but I seem to recall another one that stored a bunch of info for a bunch of the other carriers (though that might have been for roaming and may not be of any help here).
*shrug* Otherwise, I's gots nothin' lol
Hey guys. I noticed a lot of people, including myself, have been getting the dreaded process com.android.phone force close message upon booting up new ROMs.
This only happens when trying to connect to data. Turn it off, and the force closes stop. Well, I believe I've found a workaround using an APN file I've found floating around on the Carbon ROM thread!
Upon booting, just keep clicking the OK message to skip past the FC errors and the ROM setup process, and then disable your data as soon as you can. Connect to wifi, go to the Play store and install your favorite root browser. Download the linked APN file at the bottom of this post to your phone, and open up your root browser. Copy the APN file you downloaded, then go to system/etc, delete the stock APN file and replace it with the new one. Set permissions to rw-r-r, reboot into recovery, and do a factory data reset. Boot back into ROM and voila, you should be good!
Note that this may or may not fix your data problems, as every phone is different and some of you are on different carriers. This method has been working for me ever since I started doing it a couple of days ago, and almost every new ROM I've installed recently have given me the FC error. That is no more with this new APN, and I even get a better data connection than before. Hope this helps you all!

This method has also fixed my data problems on the new KitKat ROMs as well. Before, I wouldn't even get data on the new KK ROMs, and if I did, 3G would go away and never come back when switching between wifi and data. Replaced the APN, and my data came back stable, even when switching to wifi.

Okay, I've been seeing this complaint around the forums recently, so I'll say this.
For as long as I've ever owned a smartphone, 3G/4G ALWAYS turned off for me whenever I was in a phone call, but I could still browse the internet and stuff. Maybe now things are different with this phone/these ROMs, and data is actually blocked when in a call, I don't know. It's not an issue to me, though, because I really don't use data while in a call. So hopefully this issue can get cracked down further for you guys who do.

I can confirm that no matter what ROM I've been on, when I made or received a call, my 4G/3G symbol would disappear, but if I was on 4G I could still access the internet. Not with 3G of course. I'll need to get to a 4G area and test this.

For CM10.2 it works fine. For stock it is fine it just seems to be this KitKat that is a GSM build that is being worked over a bit for CDMA. That is where the problem lies.

Paste in system/etc, set permissions to rw-r-r, reboot to recovery, factory data reset, reboot. Worked for me every time.

I wonder if this has to do with our builds coming from the nexus 5, since it is a tri-band LTE device. It does not have the capability to be connected to LTE and CDMA at the same time. Are there any radio files we are grabbing from the nexus 5 that might be causing this behavior to occur?
Check out this article, it talks about the inability of the tri band devices to be connected to LTE while using voice/text:

Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?8s937bc91ysgpqe
*****EDIT*****
This method has also fixed my data problems on the new KitKat ROMs as well. Before, I wouldn't even get data on the new KK ROMs, and if I did, 3G would go away and never come back when switching between wifi and data. Replaced the APN, and my data came back stable, even when switching to wifi.

Sorry for belated update, worked like a charm for me.!
Confirmed to work. I did NO factory data reset or even rebooting. FCs just immediately stopped after replacing file. Proof enough for me.
What's the cause of this?

This did not work for me on the AOSP 4.4 ROM either. I have tried several times and still get force closes. I am running fine on CM10.2 though.
Does this fix the issue with switching between 4G to 3G? While on the Omni rom, if I'm connected to 4G and it loses signal, it doesn't connect to 3G. Or, if I want to turn of 4G and only use 3G, it never connects.
For some reason, when I put it, the system just disregards it. It says successfully deleted and pasted too. When I delete the old one and paste the new one it says "Do you want to overwrite?" even though the old one is gone. Anybody got anything?

*No signal strength after multiple flashes and recoveries I have flashed multiple Touchwiz and Aosp Roms as well as restored the original stock firmware. (JediX20 and JediMaster + PacMan 4.2.2 and 4.3 + Stock Firmware Samsung 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 and even updated to 4.3 and downgraded back to 4.1.2) Nothing seems to work sometimes when I boot up ill have signal and my phone will work. Sometimes ill make a call while I have 3 signal bars or more and the phone will just be in dialing mode and after 10 seconds or so my signal will cut off and the call will disconnect saying there is no signal or "out of service area" and as soon as it hangs up my service bars reappear. And then there are times where the phone will show no signal strength at all for the whole time. In all instances data will still work. I have flashed and recovered through odin multiple times but I know the issue lies within the software I just dont know where. EFS maybe? I even thought it was in factory mode and downloaded titanium backup and deleted every "Factory Test Mode" I saw. Still no luck and im bout to the point im about to chunk it. Any ideas of why it is doing this? Any help would be much appreciated. A phone aint nothing if the basic functions of call text and web doesnt work.*I have also tried flashing K7 MA4 J2 and UCAMH3 Modems. None seem to help the problem.

Possible on the EFS...but that file is really an all or nothing deal...
It is possible to have a bad antenna or radio chip....but I do agree with you on a software fix first...to include a custom APN setup with experimented entries...
I've also heard that arbitrarily bouncing between 4.1 and 4.3 roms does alter the partition structure slightly ...but after looking into the EFS on both frameworks....I've noticed they have the same size and the information is identical...
I wish that I had more help for you....g

Are you really on straightalk like your profile says? Have you checked your APNs? You've been bouncing back and forth I'm wondering what's in there. Sounds like something in there is not happy.

My apns are fine and have always worked. The problem is not with that but rather signal strength, being able to make and receive calls. Messaging and data work fine.

My phone has always worked flawlessly until now. The signal can be normal but when I make a call it rings forever. .. the signal drops..my phone says it's out of service area and hangs up. .. and soon as it hangs up the signal bars reappear. .. in that specific order. It had never done that before until recently

If a radio/ril package doesn't repair the situation for you...and a complete return to stock fails also....(stock contains radio/ril )...
Then you should consider a hardware repair...
The note 2 had antenna issues on some devices...g

Greg,
Do you know where I can get details about the antenna issues. I searched several forums that pointed to the usb flex. I just replaced mine and still have the same problem of weak signal and constant signal drops.
Thxs
Thanks man ill try this out. Isnt there a way to just wipe the efs, system, data, dalvick, cache in TWRP and start fresh?
Do "NOT" wipe your EFS FOLDER...and do "NOT " re-partition your device in Odin either...
Simply use TWRP and wipe system ...data....dalvik...and cache...
Also ....you can wipe your internal storage as well if your important items are stored on the external SD....(photo's etc.)..
And as for the antenna question ...just Google it....g

I was poking around in my efs folder and went to Factory Apps and found a factory mode script. I opened it up in RB text editor and found that the script said on so I assume that it being on must have had something to do with the call feature. I changed the script from on to off and saved it. Soon after I tried making a bunch of calls its been working flawlessly but in exchange the lockscreen will not show up nor does the option to reboot/power off/airplaine mode shows up. Im going to Keep testing the calls in the meantime.

Im experiencing a problem nearly identical to yours. I have an i317 unlocked using a Tmobile SIM. Everything was working fine until I flashed a rom (I believe I accidentally flashed a rom with a Tmobile radio which boot looped the phone). After fixing the bootloop and flashing the cyanogen mod rom, I started experiencing the frequently dropped signal.
I have downgraded and gone back to stock several times which has not fixed the problem
After reading this thread I changed the factory mode script to off, but it doesn't seem to have affected the radio performance.
I remember reading that the partition could possibly be corrupted in a bad flash. What is the best way to reformat the partion?
Any help greatly appreciated
Did you reboot the phone afterwards?

Yea still no luck. But after about 3 days and a crapload of flashes I ended up flashing jedix20 and added the alexander theme..which suprised the hell out of me...the stock jedi had less signal bars like 1 or 2. I flashed alexander theme and my bars are from 2-4 with 4 being the best. Everything seems to be working. I had also did a test and made sure that my Network in setting was registered to the HOME network. That may have played a factor as to why the network wouldnt work even with signal bars. I flashed JediMasterX2 and ran across an issue like that. I flashed the att carrier files and it didnt work. Then I flashed the 7105 version and checked the Network operators and searched for a network. It pulled up AT&T and Verizon and when I chose AT&T and it registered my phone everything started working. I dont really like messing with the system files but I investigated the Jedimaster zip and looked under Jedi> carrier> att> and opened up the cscversion.txt under rb text editor and it showed an incorrect version. I317ATTAMA4....which im assuming was supposed to be I317ATTUCAMA4. Also under the SW Configuration. Xml the csc version was still the same. AMA4 it may be nothing but I would have thought it would have needed to match up. Ill have to look into it some more. I really want to update but hell idk. Might be done trying to flash roms on this device if everything works right

Would the phone having factory test and factory mode on the phone affect it any. I seem to have 2 factory mode apps with one being 560kb and the other 84kb. I don't know if those could affect the signal performance

Tbh. I honestly never got it to work right. I tried for months to get it to work right and to no avail. I ended up selling it and getting the note 3.
