[Q] editing APNs in Jelly Bean? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

hey guys.
I finally tried Codename Android, and I'm finding it very snappy, and pretty good.
only problem i'm having is my connection stays at EvDO Rev. A:6, not A:8. since then i'm getting spotty data and Pandora skips, which it never did in Rev a:8.
my wife is on stock ICS rooted and she connects to a:8 right next to me, while i'm connected to a:6.
I'm thinking it may have something to do with the APNs. i tried deleting my APN, to see what would happen...and nothing happened. still connected to a:6. Prior to Jelly Bean when I would delete the APN using APN Backup and Restore, it would delete the settings for the APN and obviously I would have no internet connection.
is there a way to do this in JB? or anyone know how i can change my connection to a:8?
If i can't get a solution to this i might have to go back to a Touch Wiz based rom

Ironically enough I just noticed the same thing last night when I was at work, I would be @ rev A6
I too tried some mods, deleting eri.xml from framework-res.apk and replacing it with the stock TW one, same with apns-config.xml but no success. Which leads me to think it's a framework.jar issue, some sort of ril thing. If that's the case I'm not too sure on solving that.

well that's not good. that's a deal breaker for me. so I will have to change to TW again. do you know if this is a JB based issue, or a AOSP/AOKP issue? because there's a couple of JB-based TW roms out now. was going to try the one by freeza.

I'm really not too sure, I haven't checked out the JB leak yet. I know on a TW ICS ROM I'm always on Rev 8, on CM10/AOKP I'm on Rev 6. So I'd assume it's something with the AOSP ROMs only

i'm trying freeza's TW JB leak rom and from the get go, i'm on Rev a8. must be an AOSP thing.

[Q] Odd 3G issues

Lately I've been getting very odd issues with my Epic 4G. Regardless if it says 3G or 1X as my signal, I'm getting only 1X speeds. At times, my signal strength changes as well, one minute showing full signal, the next it's at 0, then back to normal. The bars also go down if data is actively being used, or I'm on a call. It's gotten worse in the past two weeks.
I'm on a custom ROM, the ACS ICS rom, PRL is up to date and Radio is the one designed for the ROM.
Wow acs ics is SOOOOO OLD update your rom and you should be fine.

Are there any good ICS themed ROMs running now? Heck, is there a functional 4.0 ROM for Epic 4G yet? I'd like to keep the blue theme, but I need my data back (not to mention a gps fix might be nice)

Yup Cm9 4.0.4... or aokp b31 also 4.0.4. =] I run aokp because it has more features but either are good roms.
Man you've been gone a long time if you didn't know we have cm9(android 4.0)

Last time I was here, ACS ICS 5.5 was 'new'.
I was trying to avoid CM9 since I'd heard CM7 wasn't very stable and had a lot of unneeded mods. I'm looking for something fairly similar to stock, bloat removed, custom bootscreens and voodoo sound, and of course stable.
Am I able to flash CM9 directly from Clockwork Mod? Does it need a newer radio than EI22?

Modems are not connected in anyway to clockwork mod or the rom. Just flash cm9 and download the gapps and flash those as well. Cm7 was unstable before mtd partitioning came around now its super stable. Must be if we have official cm9. You've been gone too long bro keep up with development. Otherwise you'll end up with an EOL phone.

I just remember ACS ICS said it worked best on EI22, but now I see a bunch of newer modems, so I wasn't sure if there is one that works best with CM9.
I'll see about making the jump to CM9, for now my battery is low, so I'm going to charge and give it a shot in the morning (hopefully I don't softbrick my phone again...)

Lol you shouldn't. But be aware of the fact that during installationg it puts you on mtd partitioning. This will reboot the recovery don't panic just let it do its thing and it will boot. Then go back into recovery and flash the gapps and your good to go .
With odining a new modem make sure you have a good cable and not the stock one. If you end up with it getting stuck or failing replace that cable/try another usb port and flash the modem again and you should be fine.
Also modems aren't dependent of the rom... they work the best according to location... but usually the newest is the best.

OP, do you live in ATL, I notice this exact same on 3 og epics and 1 et4g. And this is right after they activated "advanced 3g" smh BS

i'm on alternate carrier and experiencing this signal drop behavior, when data is activated but no traffic the signal is pretty good 3 - 4 bar, but when the data traffic is going, the signal dropped to 0, i dont know if this affect my data speed since my carrier is already very slow lol

[Q] im not sure which rom to choose

hello! my brother rooted my phone last week before he left out of the country and he left me his xda info to ask if i had any questions since i wont be able to contact him much. my question is, does anyone know of a rom i can use that has functioning wifi tether? we have the unlimited plan but no tether and i would really love to use it. my brother installed darthstalker x and im kinda bored of it (its a great rom dont get me wrong). im just looking for something like an aokp? or aosp? idk what the difference is.. and if possible, maybe with the same motion functionality like on the original s3 rom. i like sliding my hand across to screen capture and all that haha. thanks for all the help!
ps he also installed a different kernel? idk what that means except that he said that i'll get better battery life, thats always a plus
If you want motion functions then you need to stay with a touchwiz based ROM, I think most of them have the free tether cooked in by now, it should say in the first post or changelogs if it does or not

CyanogenMod 10.1 4.2.2 latest nightly works great, including encrypted WiFi hotspot as long as you flash a kernel with it. Stock Cyanogen kernel breaks encryption. The kernel I am using right now is LeanKernel, and everything works great.
Another great ROM is PACman 4.2.1, which is a combination of ParanoidAndroid, AOKP, and CyanogenMod. I stopped using it, cause the settings are kind of a mess at the moment with most of the AOKP options being blank, but again, everything works on it, including encrypted Hotspot, and Bluetooth streaming. I like this ROM mostly because of the ParanoidAndroid settings that let you change the screen density, and per app density. This one does not need another kernel to get the hotspot working.
Here are some links:
CyanogenMod 10.1
LeanKernel
PACman ROM
Oh, and some info on tethering....T-mobile blocks it on PC's using pretty much any ROM, but you can spoof it with a browser UserAgent change and you should be good to go.

I have cynogenMod 10.1 nightly build 20130213 and LeanKernal 2.4. Still couldn't get secure wi-fi hotspot running. Any advice? What am I doing wrong?
update: got my t-mobile samsung s3 running SECURED wi-fi hotspot. :good: ...
I used cynogenMod 10.0 stable version, released on 2012-11-13
Now I'm going to test out other stuff, like making phone calls, call qualities...etc. The most important feature for me is the secure wi-fi.

im able to get a secure connection on dandroid but i'll give cyanogenmod 10 a shot. also i noticed as i looked into the leankernel host, did you download the right file? if i remember reading correctly, att and tmobile are pretty much the same. i looked over it a couple days ago and thought they were all just updates. today i noticed that there was att, sprint, and verizon (noob mode lol..)

You went back to a 4.1 build, wifi tether worked fine back then.
If you want 4.2.2 with encrypted wifi, try the latest CM10.1 nightly with LeanKernel 2.6. That combo works perfect for me.

[Q] is it possible to use GUI's across ROM's? and if so, how?

so i installed Cyanogenmod(hood pope) 10.2 based on android 4.3 to my e4gt, but no matter how many different modems i tried, it wouldn't get 3g, so i installed wild for the night unofficial 10.2, based on 4.2.2, and it got 3g but it wouldn't work the gps, it would take a while to lock on and easily lose my location, so i thought when cm official page got some official nightly downloads for the e4gt not long ago it would be better but no difference for my sph-d710, so i gave up and installed rooted ics and left a nandroid of my CM behind just in case i'd go back to it, so now ics works fine but looks horrific, so is there a way to use my CM gui from my nandroid on ics but leaving the system itself(the engine as one might say) as it is so that the features will still work? i really love the CM GUI and features, but since i've got no official support i want to get the looks at least, is this possible?, if so, how do i do it?
sorry for the trouble and thank you for your time.
What modems were you trying? Only ICS modems will work with CyanogenMod, AOSP/AOKP, MIUI, etc. Seems like you were using JB modems.

Which rom?

I've been running Lifeless ever since I got my phone. Its been good to me and no issues at all. I tried 4.2.2 aosp when it was initially released and had a bad experience.
I'm so confused as to which rom is more stable, which rom I should try.. Carbon, AOKP, PAC, revolt, etc. Plus now with 4.3 out I feel I'm running an old rom now. .
Any advice would be great!
Well first off all lifeless is a stock based rom. We don't have 4.3 for stock yet so you would have to go to aosp for that. And every room you listed is aosp. If you want to stay stock the only other stock based custom rom that I've tried I'd nexOGen 1.6. It is built from zvc which is the same as zvb (which lifeless runs on) except zvc has some performance enhancements, mainly to receiving / holding on to signal. If you want to try aosp again, cyanogenmod is a pretty clean straight aosp build though I have seen lots of people are having issues with data not connecting. I didn't really screw around much with aosp on this phone because stock runs better for me (with a custom kernel anyway lol), so I'm going to leave the aosp for someone else to talk about. Just nandroid the rom your on and give them a shot, each rom runs different on each phone, so YMMV.

I know its stock. And that is what has been keeping from going to AOSP because of hiccups here and there. With my busy life, if something goes wrong, itd be a set back.
I may give nexOgen a try though.
I try to keep a current nandroid every so often. But thanks for the small insight.
Hit the thanks button then

Having a hard time finding a decent ROM with Wifi Calling

I've been using Cyanogen mod 10 for a year or so now, and the biggest gripe I have with it is that Wifi Calling doesn't work. I was looking around and couldn't find a ROM that supported Wifi Calling. Everything is AOSP based these days. I'd greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.
Pretty much any 4.1.2 Roms so if you look for those I know there's a few maybe two good ones. But pretty much just about any 4.1.2 ROM that is touch wiz based will have WiFi calling. I wish it was in newer versions like 4.4 because I used to use it a lot

I just got a new t989 and I've been flashing like mad. I've tried numerous JB, ICS, and GB roms and the DEVs really put a lot of work=time into making them REAL nice for everyone here. For me, I just needed wifi-calling and prefer a nice lean machine, so GB based roms are great for me. I'm currently running slickMOD SUPREME and it's been great. Gonna try some more cuz I'm a junkie tho
Here are some links for you to name a few:

Here's a list of t989 roms at GalaxyS2ROOT - http://galaxys2root.com/category/t-mobile-galaxy-s2-roms/ - (look thru them; there are video reviews and it's usually mentioned which are stock and have wifi-calling)

slickMOD SUPREME - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509473
What you're looking for are "stock" based roms, Unless I'm mistaken, nobody has performed the miracle of AOSP, AOKP, CM + wifi-calling yet.
Hope that helps
FYI: I'm running Jedi Mind Trick JB 8 and it's slick as $**t. Very polished and wifi-calling works great. Just follow the installation info to the letter. Also, Rushing just released Shadow_SU. Nice and fresh and should contain the latest/ greatest you can expect from UVMC6. I wasn't able to test wifi-calling works yet as I ended up in a boot loop which was most definitely MY fault, NOT the rom. Gonna give it another whirl. There are a lot of great roms out there, old and new, and I'm not as depressed now as I was when I first realised I was stuck shopping at StockROM Mart, thanks to the many great devs

Hey, I am new at this, but I have been flashing all kinds of roms fro cm10-11, beanstalk 4.4, and a few other and my go back to for DD is jedi mind trick v7. is the only one that is very stable in my t-989 and has wifi calling which is awesome now that I am in Mexico and I can still call the USA over wifi, I hope this helps.
