Clockworkmod recovery doesn't work(only get a blank screen after I make my selection), and my phone wont boot. I'm trying to flash a rom via fastboot or adb.
I installed fastboot and adb using this guide:
fastboot adb guide
I downloaded htc sync to install the drivers.
I'm trying to follow this guide for flashing a new rom
xda flashing guide
when i try "fastboot -w" the command prompt returns "erasing 'userdata'... FAILED <remote: not allowed>"
it seems the sollution for this is posted here. but i don't know how to flash an hboot. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've been searching and all i could find was fastboot commander, but when I try to flash a new Hboot or my recovery image it returns "flash FAILURE"

In clockwork use the trackball to select items, not the power button.
To use most fastboot commands you need an unlocked bootloader, or the engineering bootloader. To chanhe your bootloader you need to be s-off, or do an entire ruu.

Wasn't using the trackball. This is embarrassing. Thanks for all the helpful info, you're awesome.

wow this is funny, but sadly it helped me also
In case you'd still like to know how to do it via fastboot, here are some steps:
Place the .zip in the same directory as the adb and fastboot executables
Double check the md5 of the .zip before proceeding to prevent bricking the device
Run the following commands in command prompt:
fastboot devices //Verify that the device is detected
fastboot erase cache //Not sure if this is completely necessary, but the guide I followed included it as a step
fastboot oem rebootRUU //Boot into RUU, which lets you flash HBOOT, radio, etc.
fastboot flash zip [zipname.zip] //Replace zipname.zip with the actual name of the file you are flashing
fastboot reboot-bootloader //The guide I pulled this info from didn't specifically say that you should reboot to bootloader rather than to Android, but I have seen others mention that you should always reboot to the bootloader first after flashing an HBOOT or radio. I would do this just in case
thehiggins you saved the day
Thanks You
Didn't know I had to be in RUU. When do I need to be in RUU, when flashing the boot or any boot related img/zip ?

Please specify exactly which error is given when you execute "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"(recovery.img being your recovery image).
Because if you've got fastboot commands working you should be able to flash.

You can flash a recovery with the following command over adb or terminal emulator if your s-off. I know cm7, amonra recovery and rmd recovery support this, others...probably.

I installed the drivers, it says
Android Composite ADB Device
version 2.0.10.12

Shouldnt it says 3.0?
anyway... it didnt work... I will try to delete/uninstall everysingle htc driver in my pc or try on another fresh laptop with no htc drivers.
Again here,
new pc, Windows XP SP3 with no HTC/Android software.
Intalled the HTC 3.0 and the phone was not recognized
should I try on win7?
that is going to be my next test
follow up: tryed on win7, htc 3.0.0 drivers didnt work. phone is not recognized.
I know it was working fine... tryed to flash it and it died... resurrected with RIFF Box but cannot flashed with any firmware.
i tried to flash a new hboot with android flasher, but it just reboot and nothing happened.
did you check md5 sum btw? just with the error saying invalid and 1 byte...
So you can still access fastboot but cant flash? hmmm...
I would personally delete all your android sdk and redownload it all and set up adb fastboot again, it does sound like a driver problem

Can't flash any RUU. Can't access recovery. Just nothing. Anyone any ideas what I can do?

Hm, no fastboot. Does it recognize it if you connect the phone to your pc? Your PC may see a USB serial console that accepts commands.
Google for "HbootAnalysis" to get a list of commands.
The gotofastboot commands looks worth a shot. Once in fastboot you should be able to flash anything you want.
The phone reacts, and the computer knows there is something there. Just not a phone...

So you cannot even access fastboot?
No
Sent from my GalaxyS2 with CM9
This is probably extremely unhelpful so I apologise but what did you do/what happened to the Desire to make it (what seems to be) stuck in a loop?
this is a partition/radio brick
it usually happens when you try and RUU a device when its using the new alpharev hboots that do not have the right sizes (hes using the sense hboot which doesnt use stock sizes)
so basically it kills the partitions. this is because alpharev put that "annoying" hboot protection on to stop RUU's from overwriting it. i love the alpharev team but that really isnt needed
I dont think its possible to fix this without being able to get to fastboot as we need to get the hboot flashed with stock sizes
Stuck on the way RRU
I encountered the same problem today:
My solution:
You need Android-sdk with fastboot command
"fastboot devices" work for me
I got my last backup ClockworkMod on my sdcard
/clockworkdmod/backup/2012-01-16-18.04.51/
width these files:
boot.img
data.yaffs2.img
system.yaffs2.img
recovery.img
...
I flashed these files
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash system system.yaffs2.img
fastboot flash userdata data.yaffs2.img
Then I tried the boot
fastboot oem boot
Iit worked !
After the reboot I stood on this page RUU (hboot)
To erase the RRU Flag on fastboot:
fastboot oem resetRUUflag
And now all is working on my cyanogen 7 NB

I am following the directions from htcdev.com/bootloader
I got to the point where I am supposed to "get_identifier_token"
Now my phone is connected as it should be, I am in "fastoot usb".
Still, the only thing happens is that I get the following message in command prompt: "waiting for device". Nothing happens. I tried to restart PC and phone again: same problem.
Does anyone have an idea about what I'm doing wrong? I'm stuck.
Okay. Now I unlocked bootloader. I think the problem was USB-debugging was not turned on.
Trying to run clockworkmod, but keep getting error messages:
"you must root your phone for ROM manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "system/xbin/su".
When I try to flash clockworkmod recovery I get the following error:
"An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands".
My deviced is with unlocked bootloader, buy of course still S-ON. I understood from the threads around that that's not a problem.

How can I install a custom ROM?
How can I install data2sd?
Can someone help? Thanks a lot.

Hi, what you need to do is go into your bootloader as you usually do, Volume - and Power Button, plug your USB and go into fastboot USB. Then you need to create a file on you C: drive called "fastboot" and put the following files in there "adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll, AdbWinUsbApi.dll & fastboot.exe" and your recovery image, I suggest you use the offical clock work mod recovery which is available here,
if you do not have these files you can download them from here,
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474956
once you do this then open a command dos window by typing cmd in the start search box of windows.... once the command window opens go to the right folder of C:\fastboot> where you saved the files.
Then as your phone is in fastboot USB and you are in the command window C:\fastboot>, type in the command window the following,
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
Then press enter, what you should see is the below,
c:\fastboot>fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
sending 'recovery' (2224 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... OKAY
If you follow the above then you should have clockworkmod recovery, you can then take the USB out and go back to the hboot in you bootloader and choose recovery under hboot by navigating with the volume button and power button.
I do need to inform you though that if you are one of the unlucky WFS owners that get the "Black Screen Recovery" issue where you go into recovery and you only get a black screen and you tactile buttons are on then you need to follow the bellow method to be able to see you recovery on you PC screen than on your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781105
Also here is a youtube video of what I mean
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgrPctWKW8E
I know all this as I had the same issue and this helped me. Now I feel that I need to inform you about other issues... When you unlock the bootloader you can't flash a ROM and then just switch your phone on and it boots into the new ROM, there is a process you need to follow.
When you choose your ROM, and not all ROMs work with the Wildfire S new batch of phone as I had to find out the hard way, you need to flash your ROM and then open the .zip file of your phone copy the boot.img of the ROM paste it in the c:\fastboot> directory and again in the command window type,
fastboot flash boot boot.img
You will see the below,
c:\fastboot>fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (2224 KB)... OKAY
writing 'boot'... OKAY
Then type,
c:\fastboot>fastboot reboot
And your phone will reboot into the new ROM allow 10 to 15 minutes... BE PATIENT.
I hpe the above helps you.

Thanks in advance,
Hi guys,
I flashed stock back to my phone and relocked the bootloader by "fastboot oem lock".
I been stuck with this for the last 2 days searching for solution on how to get my phone unlocked and rooted again.
This is what I have tried so far:
1. Rumrunner 1.10.605.10 and 1.10.605.15 firmware (flashed 1.10.605.10 and updated to 15) - Run just fine, but it does not change anything on the phone. Still shows RELOCKED S-off and NO Root.
2. Firewater (temp-root method) - Temproot: Root acquired. Firewater: "there really isn't a helluva lot to do here. bye bye"
3. Flashing CM recovery - failed remote not allowed
Could someone please help me to get back Root access and UNLOCK my phone?
Thank you in advance.
If your s-off, all you have to do is fastboot flash a custom recovery.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery_file.img
Then flash superuser zip thru recovery. Then you will be rooted. Also it is a myth that you need to relock the bootloader to do an ruu, so that wasnt really needed. Not sure exactly how to unlock the bootloader again.

Enable USB Debugging in Settings.
To do so, go to build information and tap it 7 times.
This will enable the Developer options in settings.
In there, check the box for Usb Debugging.
You should then be able to fastboot flash the recovery as per usual.
Good luck! :good:

1. Download this file, and place it on your pc in the same folder as fastboot.exe and adb.exe. Rename it to recovery.zip
2. Connect the phone to the pc and open a cmd prompt to where the files are, and type the following.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Wait for hboot.
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Wait for grey HTC logo.
Code:
fastboot flash zip recovery.zip
Wait for cmd window to say it has finished.
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
3. Hit power button to select bootloader, and then use the power button again to select recovery.
If all is well you should boot to TWRP 2.6.3.4. Then flash Superuser and you will be rooted.

Holy crap dude. I thought my phone was bricked. Thank you so much for that!
I flashed my redmi note 8 pro indian version with miflash, and downgraded to android 9 from 11 to install Ubuntu touch.
Ubports installer still didnt recognize my phone I am guessing cause it was Begoniain(india) as opposed to Begonia(Global) that is supported.
But my problem is I want to go back to Android, and I dont know how to go back, I didn't have any recovery tool installed before installing Ubuntu Touch, now Ubuntu is very buggy, and I can't seem to install TWRP. I have no other recovery tools installed, just fastboot. I guess I should hvae installed twrp before installing Ubuntu Touch. I want to know how I can go back to android or to any other supported custom rom.
Thank you.
whats wrong with fastboot?
Hey, thanks for replying. I followed the steps in this video
which is a very accurate video i found after searching for many videos.
basically he asked to download the right TRWP, then ADB platform tools, then the ADB driver found here
[OFFICIAL][TOOL][WINDOWS] ADB, Fastboot and Drivers - 15 seconds ADB Installer v1.4.3
15 seconds ADB Installer v1.4.3 ADB, Fastboot and Drivers What is this? This is All-in-One installer for 3 most needed PC tools for Android. No need to download big SDK for 3 small things. I originaly made it for my Kurdish friend AnGrY DuDe in...
forum.xda-developers.com
then using "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" cmd command
this seemed to work for many people and everything went well. but I just can't boot to twrp it just takes me to the ubuntu touch screen and i log back in to UT
xiaomi:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot oem reboot-recovery

I get this message
FAILED (remote: 'unknown command')
fastboot: error: Command failed
more commands I tried
'fastboot flash boot' gives me this error
fastboot error android_product_out not set
and 'fastboot boot recovery' command gives me this error
fastboot error cannot load 'recovery' no such file or directory
another command 'adb reboot bootloader' gave me this
error no devices/emulators found
I recommend to read 'fastboot help'
'fastboot flash' cmd requires two arguments: target (partition name) and source (path to file on pc)
'fastboot boot' cmd requires one argument only: source (path to file on pc)
'no such file or directory' means there exist no such file or directory with name 'recovery'
(Note this command requires bootable flag on current slot or will silently fail)
'fastboot oem' commands are device specific hidden commands. 'fastboot oem reboot-recovery' does not work on my device, but you will find lot suggestions for this here in forum (I just copy-pasted of xiaomi forum)
'adb' commands generally can't work in fastboot mode (and 'adb reboot bootloader' is fastboot mode btw)
if 'fastboot oem reboot-recovery' is unknown command, you can use 'fastboot reboot' instead. press and keep holding volume up while the phone reboots, it will enter recovery mode.
now the phone is stuck at restarting
i tried this 'fastboot erase data"
FAILED (remote: Partition table doesn't exist)
i just want a way to reset the phone back to android or other custom rom
Partition table doesn't exist?? you must have done something stupid...

yes i think so, i think i should've installed twrp before that was the mistake, but i'll have to format this somehow
Did you try flash by mi flash the rom that you used to downgrade?
yes this is the first thing i tried, the same procedure i used to downgrade to 9 with mi flash, but when i do that it flashses in just 1 second, and gives success message, i was like it can't be that fast, but that happens everytime, so i figured somethings wrong. I turn on my phone and it's not flashed, it boots to ubuntu touch, but now even that's not happening, now it just keeps restarting after xiomi unlcoked screen.
i want to install a custom rom that goes best with my phone, i dont really want andriod to be honest, but need to have something installed to boot atleast, and I dont really mind if the phone goes dead, so i am not worried about experimenting on it

I believe that error message is misleading. It should mean
FAILED (remote: 'No such partition.')
you probably meant 'userdata' partition. however, I do not recommend fastboot erase cmd.
you should be able to enter fastboot mode with Volume Down button. instead of flashing TWRP into recovery partition (where it belongs) you could cheat bootloader and flash TWRP into boot partition instead. this will boot into TWRP recovery without Volume Up Button.
Code:
fastboot flash boot twrp.img
once in TWRP you can format Data, flash boot partition and install TWRP recovery.
probably easiest way is, create backup of boot + recovery from TWRP backup menu. that will create two files, boot.emmc.win + recovery.emmc.win in TWRP/Backups/<serialno>/<date> directory. just create another directory TWRP/Backups/<serialno>/my_files and place your files in there (rename boot.img = boot.emmc.win and twrp.img = recovery.emmc.win) then restore 'my_files' backup from menu.
then you can install any ROM from TWRP via System Image. Note that's android device, you can only install android. even ubports Ubuntu touch is not linux, it is just some gui build on top of android kernel to give you linux-like feelings.
