Hello friends,
When I was in Viet Nam I had a crazy shopkeeper unlock my SGH-T989D TELUS [galaxy S2X] so I could make calls while I was abroad.
I don't know exactly what he did, but I have been unable to utilize Kies to update my phone to ICS.
I have had severe issues with reception now that I'm back in Canada with the phone reception fading in and out during calls making it impossible to have a serious conversation.
I decided to use ODIN to root my phone to see if that would fix my issues, and I have restored back to the TELUS/samsung default rom in the hope that it would allow me to utilize KIES to update to ICS, hoping that it might magically fix my issue or at LEAST that in the worst case scenario I would be able to return my phone to telus/future shop/samsung (Each of these 3 have valid return/replacement programs that I may utilize.) Unfortunately, even after flashing back the Telus defaults KIES will not allow me to update, giving the "Your phone does not support software upgrading using KIES." message.
I suspect that the problem is related to the fact that the firmware reads:
PDA: KJ3 / PHONE: KJ3 / CSC: KJ3 (XXX)
I have read that for Telus phones the final part should read (TLS) instead of (XXX). I don't know what the XXX means but I'm guessing that is related to the unlock I had done in Viet Nam, and I assume it is what is preventing me from doing the ICS update --- and I'm afraid Telus/Samsung/Future Shop would notice this and not process a return. I have of course tried using different cables and installing/uninstalling KIES and utilizing a different computer to attempt to update.
For Reference:
Running android 2.3.5
baseband t989dtlkj3
kernel v. 2.6.35.11
gingerbread.tlkj3
I am new to the XDA forums but I have not found anyone with exactly this problem (although my search skills may not be up to par).
I am writing this as a last resort, I hope that someone out there can help!!
Thank you in advance!
Have you tried the latest ICS Telus stock ROM?

I have not yet attempted ODIN flashing the ICS Telus rom: I felt that if flashing the gingerbread stock rom did not modify/update the weird (XXX) back to (TLS) then the ICS might not either. IT is my priority to get that fixed so that (hopefully) KIES will then allow me to update not only now but also in the future --- and because I'm afraid that it might cause rejected returns. Do you think that flashing the ICS Telus rom would have a chance to fix this (XXX) thing? (I don't even know what that is an indicator for)

I have fully updated my phone to the newest OS and still I have radio problems, call cuts in and out, misses calls... Does anyone have any ideas? I literally have no idea what to do next.
I think it is related to the firmware being (XXX) instead of TLS for Telus. The unlock in vietnam has been causing me trouble for a year.

Hey guys, I was hoping I would'nt have to do this but i'm at a loss now.
I own the blue xperia play 4g phone and currently using it with straight talk service with their unlocked sim. Everything was fine until I decided to start trying out custom roms.
No matter what I tried, I could get them to load, work , function ect BUT I had weird issues where people could not hear me for the 1st call, but if I called them right back they could. It just seemed to be random and I could'nt put my finger on it.
So I flashed back to the stock 2.3.3 R800AT firmware, and then updated thru their Sony patch they made me do on the phone...and everything was fine again.
Well I got adventurous again, and UNLOCKED my bootloader. So NOW....after doing custom roms, I CANNOT reload my old R800at 2.3.3 firmware and get the OFFICIAL update from them. So i'm stuck with an upgradeable working 2.3.3 (this is the 2.3.3 before the update they put out, I know it does'nt go to 2.3.4. but its some kinda 2.3.3 update) with NO further updates.
So after tons of research i'm HOPING its the baseband I need ??? I dont know what else to do. Only other option is if some kind soul wants to send me over their AT&T r800AT 2.3.3 UPDATED firmware I'll just go back to stock but i'd prefer to keep using my custom roms!!!
***maybe if someone who has the blue xperia play 4g version, would post the "baseband" version they see on their phone, even that would help!!!***
Any help would be great and more than appreciated.
God bless and thanks guys,
Jason

Oh my friend, you are in the same boat as me. xD
All you need to do is get the stock 2.3.3 AT&T firmware, But you can also use r800i firmwares and update to 2.3.4 with the latest firmware.
Theres a thread somewhere containing the firmware, if not you can find it on google.
(Which is what im doing right now with straight talk) only negative thing I see is so far H instead of H+.
Dito on the baseband, the flashtool links with FTF 2.3.3 is down my phone is softbricked though

If alejandrissimo unlocked your phone you should have OTA updates. If you unlocked it with another method then im not sure what to tell you, gotta find the updated FTF files.
Guys good news here
I was correct in thinking it was the baseband on our phone that is causing the problem. I think its due to the fact we are 4g rather than 3g.
So how did i fix this problem??? Simple. I was able to use the doomkernel v13 (any seem to work), actually install the rom of choice, (i'm using Jokawild 2.5), and then downloaded/installed baseband file -36.
I also installed the -36 libs package that was somewhere posted on here its the new .386 version.
Everything is working now and i'm happy. Going to save the baseband/lib files so i have them forever incase something happens.
Take care, God bless and thank you for your input/time. I could'nt go another day with them stock at&t roms!!!!

Hello hello, I need your help. I've got the generic North Am. 2.3.4 (.42) and I'm having this problem. I've got an unlocked bootloader and I want to install the baseband file. Can I do that with a generic rom? What is the process for installing a baseband file and libs package? Where can I get these files? Thanks.

I think I have the same or a similar problem. I frequently encounter a similar situation where it could take 10+ seconds before the other person can hear me speak, but I can hear them the whole time. By now most of my friends and family know how to deal with it, but before they would just hang up on me. Then they could hear me if I called them. If I reboot the phone, it fixes it for a while, but then it comes back after some time and takes another reboot to resolve.
My phone is a SIM unlocked, bootloader locked Xperia Play R800a model from last year's Google I/O. It uses the same frequencies as AT&T for 3G and 2G and I'm using it on AT&T as well. I have the Generic North America 4.0.2.A.0.42 (Android 2.3.4) ROM installed, and it has Baseband 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56.
I found a separate thread with the -36 Baseband here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469473
I'm considering flashing this over my current -56 Baseband to see if it improves the situation. As I recall, I never had this sort of trouble when I first got the phone. It's really only been since I updated to Firmware .42 that I've had these problems. Is it safe to do this?
Thanks!

Awesome! That's also funny because I also installed the -36 baseband last night. So far, so good. Calls and data both work as normal. I'll need to do more testing to be sure whether it fixed my problem or not.
Now did you just install the baseband or did you also flash or push the libs to it as well? All I did was use Flashtool to flash the baseband .ftf file.
Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?

How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade
Hi all,
I just received a new GNex from Vodafone Australia. Can someone please help me figure out which version I have so I can update it?
I am running 4.0.4 (rooted)
The Baseband is:
I9250TDVLE1
The build is:
IMM76K.I9250TDVLE1
I could not find an update on google anywhere...
I found reference to my build pertaining to Toro, Magro and Verizon.
I can't see how all of these could be simultaneously true...
I thought '**** it' I ll roll back to a yakju 'official' 4.0.4 IMM76I ROM from here and then flash the Update to 4.1.1 JRO03C
But When I booted into CWM and tried to flash the imm76i, it would not let me. Is there something I am doing wrong or do not understand about swapping roms...?
(I cleared the cache / factory reset)
Am I stuck with IMM76I until google makes an 4.1.1 update, or can I flash another google rom somehow and get the update that way?
Cheers

That's because the package you downloaded on Google's Developers website needs to be flashed using fastboot, not CWM. Follow this thread to flash back to yakju, and you should be good to go.

It would definitely work however if you even need to return your phone back to Vodafone, you may or may not run into some issues due to not being on their ROM. It's pretty hard to find random stock ROMs for places other than the main ones these days (or I just might be looking at the wrong places).

I'm sorry, I can't remember what I did, but I fixed it that night, which now feels like months ago.
I installed Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.2, on a pc and I know that that helped me speed up the process.
You can't ruin anything unless you flash a rom not designed for the phone, or format the bios partition and then reboot (with out installing a new bios), but even then I'm sure you can install stuff from a pc over usb using that program.

No worries mate, this is my 2nd android phone (first was a nexus s).
I learned a lot by rooting and playing with custom roms on that ph, but I have been really happy with stock jelly Bean on this (albeit rooted) device. Battery life is great, and it's a snappy phone with great features.
FYI I just read an interesting article Why Apple Won't Divorce Samsung today that explained how Samsung make all the chips for Apple products. You can't go wrong with Samsung mate.
Android users on this forum are generally friendly and Damn knowledgeable too.
Enjoy your new phone!

OK. The fact is that Vodafone and Telstra get all their updates later. This is because of the better 3g signals they have built in the phone. So due to this their updates come out a little while later. Also it depends where you are in the world (eg. UK, AU, USA) because the UK has already got the update as far as I know. So there is two options here to stay with Vodafone if something does go wrong so you have a backup. And referring to what Unlawful had said he is right you do need a stock Vodafone ROM or features and such can go wrong. BTW I am also with Vodafone but running a custom ROM.
Thank mate. I updated it manually, months ago.
The Gnex is an awesome phone (I upgraded from a NEXUS S), and with stock jelly Bean (rooted) with stock kernel it runs smoothly and is stable.
I miss rge Wolfson audio chip of the nexus s though bc audio recordings are terrible and crackling with the gnex.
Fast charge is something that I now need and otherwise I'm satisfied!
I just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 i747 from Amazon. It is an unlocked GSM version.
Problem is it has a Canadian baseband version, and I am in the US on AT&T.
I have a problem with data connectivity, and according to Samsung tech support, it is because of the Canadian firmware/baseband version.
Can I change the firmware/baseband version from Canadian build to US build?
If so, how would I do it?
Thank you for any help.
What is the ROM and baseband on your phone? Can you make phone calls?
I could be wrong, but based on my experience with the T999, that shouldn't be working. While flashing a T999V baseband won't hurt it, it simply won't work.
Please tell us your current baseband, current rom, and current firmware build. Enter this in terminal emulator to determine base firmware build,
getprop ro.bootloader
Also, can you verify by the sticker under the battery that it is an I747 and not an I747M?

Yes, I can make phone calls. I get 4G data connection, but it is slow and keeps dropping, even though it still shows 4G.
If I swap the sim to my old phone, all data connections work great, so I know it's not the sim or the network.

Thanks!
Ok! Everything looks like it should. You could try updating to the 4.4.2 build, but keep in mind you cannot go back to 4 3 afterwards. (You can flash older ROMs but not firmware). And do not flash a 4.4 2 modem on what you are running now.
You can flash the ROMs built for the i747, but for the modem you can only use the I747M.
If the store you got it from told you it was an I747, you might be able to return or exchange it due to incorrect listing.

It was sold as an i747, not i747M, so I will just return it.
The modem is what connects me to the network, so if it remains the Canadian version, changing the firmware won't solve my issue, right?
Thank you for your help!
All I can say on that is you should never flash any firmware that is for any other model device. Its just not safe to do and will almost always cause a hard brick.

So basically, if you're unable to use it as it currently is, I personally think the best option would be to return it and try to get the US I747 model. If you go in and try changing the firmware and it ends up bricking, you'd probably lose the ability to return it, so IMO its just not worth the risk.

I am going to send it back tomorrow. I don't want to have to flash anything. It should have worked right out of the box, so I'll just return it.
Strange that the Canadian version didn't work as it should. I have an HTC Desire A8182 that is a Telus version, unlocked, and it works just fine on AT&T. No data issues at all. I rooted that one as it only has 100MB internal memory, and I wanted to get rid of bloatware and use Link2SD plus to move apps to the SD card.I didn't use a custom rom, just rooted stock firmware. It's still running 2.2 FroYo, and I love it! It's only 3G, and a tad small, which is why I decided to go with the S3.
Thanks again for your help!
Seemed a little odd to me as well, but there have been a lot of upgrades and enhancements done to many US networks that may not have been done in Canada. Its just a theory, but I747 firmware may have been built to take advantage of that and the I747M might be made to work better with older or just different networks. Kinda hard to explain what I'm thinking here...
Its also possible that the US and Canadian 3g networks are more similar than their 4g ones, which might explain the different experience with your older device.
And then again, you might have simply received a device that had something wrong with it, which you'd want to return anyway I'm sure.

I sent it back today and the seller will refund me when they receive it.
I found an interesting tidbit on the AT&T forum regarding the S3.
"The international edition won't support LTE bands"
Ordered a US version (presumably, lol) today.
These issues started with the upgrade to latest T-Mobile 4.3 software pack at the end of November. Phone operated perfectly before then. After the update, the phone would periodically not receive/place calls/texts/use data. The issue kept worsening daily. It is not related to the SIM card or location, as the card has been replaced and tested in an alternate phone where it performs perfectly.
The T999L was then consequently rooted, KNOX flagged (it's already past warranty, Samsung wouldn't give a rat's ass about it), flashed to CM11 M12 and later a variety of modems was tried. Same issues persisted. Restored to stock 4.1.2, same issues. Did 3 updates OTA to get to latest 4.3, same issues.
Messed around with 4636 menu, 2263 menu, etc. Some changes had a temporary result but nothing permanent. Calls to the phone are redirected to voicemail. When placing a call, it takes 5-10 seconds to either place it or disconnect it (as it can't connect to the network, I guess?). The bars on the phone show 3-4 bars typically, but the phone is rarely able to acquire a data connection. Again, this is not the case with other phones the SIM is tried on.
Any suggestions? I've spent probably close to 10 hours researching this and trying everything out and I am absolutely stumped. This is my mom's phone and a replacement Alcatel OneTouch Fierce 2 just "doesn't look nice", so I'm getting a fair bit of *****ing for trying to help solve this, even though it's not my fault. Would appreciate some help before Christmas.
Have you tried updating the modem?

I'd say so. Used this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987 and flashed the 4.3 basebands for T999L and T999N, total of 3. I'm thinking this is something to do with the 4.3 bootloader or basebands... any methods to go back to 4.1.2 without a brick?

If you have a T999L stick to the designated T999L modems and nothing else, or you may damage the device. If you have a 4.3 bootloader there is no way back. Have you tried to use ODIN to flash the latest NF4 firmware for your T999L and then do a factory reset using the stock recovery? I posted NF4's link in this post. Good luck.

Downloading right now, and will test. Pretty sure this is the firmware update after which this problem started occurring.
Any other ideas for what might be affecting this besides baseband? I have a feeling something else might be causing this. I'm not familiar with Samsung partitions though and what is flashed by OTA/Odin.

Well, OTA updates can sometimes fail, that's why I gave you the ODIN firmware link. It's the best help I can offer.
