Just curious if anyone has / is / or thinking about switching from the Galaxy Note to the Galaxy S III?
I'm debating on selling my rooted Note with ICS on eBay to get the S III. I can't remember the last time I used the s-pen on the Note. And I really like the zero lag time on the camera shutter on the S III. However I'm curious about the picture quality of the S III.
Thoughts? Opinions?
Thanks!
I had the AT&T Note for about two weeks before returning it and waiting for the S3 AT&T variant. I've had my S3 since last Thursday and absolutely LOOVE it, so happy I waited for it! The main issues for the Note for me were the size and the battery life. I felt it was just a tad too big for practical one-handed use (which I mainly do) & the battery was decent but not great for my use. Don't get me wrong I loved the size of the screen but felt that if the battery couldn't stand up to my use, than it kinda cancelled each other out. Also loved it for gaming and movies but again I have all the game systems and a 60" tv so it wasn't a necessity.
I feel the S3 is the perfect screen size, beautiful display, super fast, great battery life thus far, fluid and elegant. Has all the newest bells n whistles, feels great in the hand, super slim. I have no problems using it with one-hand. Very good price point of $150 with the contract extension (which I was going to do anyway).
Overall I'm super happy with the S3 and don't regret my decision to return the Note at all.
Had my International Note since November. Loved everything about the phone. Coming from a long line of PDA's use, it was the phone I had been waiting for. But, since I have a very busy and physically demanding job, the size of the phone just got in the way of being able to comfortably carry the phone on a daily basis.
The S III is just the right size with the right tools for me to get the job done.
Same here. Had the note from launch. Battery life wasn't as good as I would've liked. The size was also a little tad too large. The s3 is blazing fast in comparison.

Exactly what's been said above me. I had the note and ebayed it to get the S3, don't regret it one bit. I miss the pen a bit but I have a stylus coming from amazon now and the battery life is much better on the s3

Did you get what you wanted for your Note on eBay?
Where did you buy the S III? Looking for the cheapest price since I'm buying it off contract.
Oh I guess the only downside is not having the spen for draw something. Lol. It feels completely awkward drawing with my finger.

I'll echo everything above. I love big phones. I moved from a Dell Streak to the Note when it launched. I love the Note except the battery life, poor low light camera performance and the width made it awkward to use 1-handed. The S3 appears to have solved all those issues. I only miss the S-pen while playing Draw Something and using Autodesk Sketchbook.

What about the picture quality? How does the two compare? Anyone still have both? I thought I read somewhere that the picture quality on the S III wasn't as good because of the zero lag shutter.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I don't know. I carry both with me for my work. Switch from one to another when I run out of juice, which rarely happens, but just as a back up. I still like the Note better because of the screen size. The screen on the Note is beautiful, imo.
Anyone compared the picture quality between the Note and the S III?
Yes. I think the s3 still camera is better, especially in low light. Video seems about the same.

Hey everyone! I'd like to know if anyone else has moved and their opinions, if you don't mind.
I'd like to buy this phone in the coming weeks.
How's battery life? The camera? Any other aspects?

I went from the Note to the S3 about a week and a half ago. I definitely made the right decision BUT I do miss my Note.
Everyday use, I like the S3 better. The S3 is also MUCH smoother than my Note was. Animations between screens is so much different/better (might be less of a difference now that Note has ICS?). It just feels a bit more like a phone and I can handle it better one handed. I actually feel like I can type easier with the S3 too. I thought the larger screen of the Note would be ideal but it actually made too much space between the letters and it took me longer to type.
The screen on the S3 is better. Just the smaller size with the same tech makes it a tad crisper. And it's less saturated with warmer whites (a good thing IMO - my Note had very green-ish whites). Videos run smoother (YouTube HD clips on my Note were always a tad stuttery) and there is no "black crush" that I did unfortunately notice a bit on my Note.
However, I miss the size of the screen on the Note. It truly felt like a completely portable tablet. While at moments it felt a tad obnoxious to bust out of my pocket in a crowd (lots of unwanted attention) when I was sharing info, maps, photos or a video with others (which I seem to do a lot) the screen could not be beat. Games were great too - I just don't play games on my phone much. I used the S Pen a bit and loved it, but never really remembered to use it.
The camera seems like a total push to me. The seem completely equal (and I actually think I was able to take better pics from my Note for some reason).
The Note 2 will be KILLER no doubt, but I think that maybe a 4.8" phone is perfect for me.

hello! It's been a while. I was wondering how you still feel about the change? I'm thinking about getting a galaxy s3. I'm currently on the note and I love it. But I have the same feelings about it as you. Typing is more difficult because of the distances my fingers have to travel and the looks people give me and my students. Hahaha oh my students! Every time I take my phone out they bust out the jokes! Lol. I also like the size of the s3.

Honestly, i still like my Gnote over my Tmobile S3. Only reason i picked up the S3 is because i was getting really tired of the slow speeds i was getting with my i717 note. Although i did flash a Tmobile radio to gain 4G, 6mbps is nothing compared to 16-20mbps im now getting.
I miss my note, but the s3 didn't disappoint... keeping a close eye on the note 2 details though

Has anybody handled both the Note and the Note II or read literature concerning that topic? I'll be coming from a Galaxy S (the Vibrant variant) and I'm really concerned about how unwieldy the Note II's width can be after handling the first Note. However, the Note II is supposed to be slightly thinner, but I'm not sure how much of a world's difference that can be. I'm good for an upgrade as of a few days ago, so I may just get a Galaxy S III instead of waiting if the Note II won't feel all that different. What have you guys heard?
Someone posted a video review in a thread the other day. It was good because the guy compared the handling of it vs GS3. It had a customizable keyboard for instance, that shifts the kb from one side to the other to assist with one handed operation.
I mean, it's a large device and I can see it being awkward for smaller hands. But I do look forward to it. I wish I had the YouTube link for you, but it's in this forum.

It's 0.3 mm thinner, 2.5mm narrower, and 4.2mm longer.
So it's going to handle the same. The length increase may be a problem if you note -barely- fit in a pocket before.
I actually laugh a bit when I read reviewers say 'it handles much better than the note 1'.
That's total placebo. 2.5mm is hardly anything.

I kinda have to disagree. I went to Eurogamer on Friday and briefly played around with the Galaxy Note 2. Straight away I noticed it was slightly slimmer than my note 1. To me it made a difference, albeit it a small one. But I definitely noticed it.
Well my wife its a shorty with small hands lol and she loves her note 1.. I wanted to change hers for a note 2 (like I'm doing with mine) and she answered me with a question.. Asked me if I want the divorce.. LOL... Don't dare to touch my note she said.. I was like ok ok chill out girl xD.. She looks awesome with her device Tho.. And made most of her female friends to get a note and ditch their icrap and blackberies hehe

I think looking at it causes a placebo effect since it is a slightly taller screen, and a thinner bezel.
We'll see though - several of us will get theirs soon enough.
I've been wondering if the more curvy corners assists handholding in some way.
Just wondering how many of you, like me, came from a note 2. I miss the big screen but I dont miss fighting to hold the phone. But I do feel the s4 is now slightly too small and the battery is nothing compared to my note 2.

I have both and planning on returning my AT&T S4 due to planning to switching to TMO. I'm back to using the GN2 & I have to admit I missed the larger screen. That reason alone makes it hard for me to decide if I plan to get the 32GB version when it comes out for TMO or not.
The battery life of the S4 (my best was 20-21ish hrs w/ 7 hr screen time & 2nd best was 22ish hrs w/ 6 hr screen time) didn't bother me cuz its not fair to compare battery life since they vary in size. I believe people forget this when comparing battery life & I bet if the S4 had the GN2 battery, battery wouldn't be an issue.
With that said, I do understand where you are coming from though.
I have the note 2 and the s4 I plan on returning the s4 cause the battery life has been terrible for me..I would've kept it if I was getting the battery life other people were but I'm on my second unit and battery life is still poor. I think the s4 is actually a good compromise in terms of size I hated trying to use it with 1 hand but the battery life is the main reason why I'm going back to the note. Hopefully the can release a firmware or update in the future but for now I'm not willing to sacrifice battery life.
I appreciate this insight. I just got a note 2, but am considering the S4.
I have to agree the battery life in the Note 2 was amazing. I can go up to two days without having to charge, with continued moderate use. With the extended Anker battery, I can go without a week. Battery life in the S4 has been OK, and I haven't even been pushing it hard yet. Only flipboard, gmail, chrome, i heart so far.
I've been a Note II user since day one and recently switched to the S4. Everything you said is right on.
The battery life is the biggest thing that I've noticed, but then again, they are two different mAh...I do feel that the S4 is decent in battery life if you keep things logical and conservative. ie...screen brightness, push, etc...
I was too used to the bigger screen and although the S4 rocks a 5 inch screen the amount of real estate on the screen was definitely noticeable...even now.
The Note II was and is still a bit large to hold. There's no doubt it made its presence known on a daily basis. I remember at times I missed the phone size feeling over having the big phablet, but I kept telling myself...."hey remember this is a phablet, not just a phone-phone."
So when I got the S4, I admired the phone size feeling again as it was pretty refreshing.
Will I go back to the Note II? No. --- As much as I love it, it's a monster of a device (remember it's a phablet) and the pros on the S4 out weigh the cons for me to be able to ever switch back.
Note II: Loved the battery life and screen size.
S4: The screen resolution is insane, Snappier, Better Camera and soon enough an aftermarket battery with more mAh, will fill the gaps to complete the wish list...well aside to me wanting the 64GB version, which then I'll sell my 16GB in a heart beat.
Side note: Although the Note II had a lower dpi than the S4, it still was and still is an excellent screen. If you're watching a movie on both devices, you'd hardly tell the difference.

I sent the s4 packing and I'm back to the N2. Screen smearing, wifi issue, top screen lifting are my reasons for returning. Not worth the $680 (tax included) I spend on it. Gonna keep an eye out if things get fixed then maybe I'll go back.

I have noticed the over heating screen in a few calls also. Now a days bigger phones are "in" but I'll stick with the s4. Thinner, lighter, the screen size is just right. Besides I can still tinker with my friends note 2 every time he comes around so I'm kind of living the best of both worlds until I get my own.

Hi everyone. Most likely I'm gonna be hanging out here in the next few months. I'm really, really sure I want the Note better cuz the bigger screen. The only thing the attracts me better to the S4 is the IR blaster and the 13 mp camera...oh yeah and better resolution...BUT!...which one would you think would look better from 3 feet away (from my eyes to were my phone mounts to my Expedition). Well besides those features and quad core is there any other reasons to get the S4 instead? Thanks ahead for your input.
Sent from my Blutiful Hercules.
Size could be a factor, the n2 isn't for everyone. The gs4 does have better screen, better camera and because it's newer much more likely to have a longer shelf. (Especially important if you like touchwiz)
The note2 is bigger which could be a plus or a minus depending on user preference. The spen is really awesome if you use it. For me I think I would rather have the original note than a gs4 even though the s4 is superior in every way. For me the spen is that big of a deal to me now that I have it. That being said the note3 is on it way so if you do want a bigger screen or spen I would wait if you can...my guess is that the n3 will be available in September.
No mattee what you decide you won't go wrong. Samsung flag ship phones lately have been off the hook..I mean even the outdated s2 is rocking and relevant but for ho long?

hey pops wait a couple months for the note 3.
Thx md. It's funny how size is a factor with this phone. I mean I hear some people complain about the size after they got it but they obviously held the phone before they bought it (wtf). The Note is what it is and it should not be compared to a 4.5" (i)phone. It would be like me complaining on the size of my SUV when I chose to get a SUV. The size IS the main reason I want the note. It would be so much easier to see afar, navigate and type on that screen compared to my 4.5" screen.

from that distance I couldn't notice the difference in resolution from my Note2 and a co-worker's S4, and I have 20/20 vision. based on your criteria, I think the N2 would be the better choice.
I think the Note 2 is too big if you're going to be carrying it in your pant pockets alot. if you carry your stuff in a bag, then the size is not a big deal. Also your body size/height makes a difference. My 6'3" friend thinks his Note 2 is the perfect size for his large hands.

I see...Thanks Speed...I'm planning to get rid of all my skinny jeans anyways...my son thinks I shouldn't wear those...anyways if resolution isn't really a factor then how about speed...I know in stats the S4 is faster obviously but in real life is there really a NOTICEABLE speed difference between the two besides maybe playing HD games?

Hi,
Regarding Speed, they will both handle games just like they are meant to. I haven't had any issues playing games on my N2.
I really think they are both on par with each other. I believe either the screen size or features is what's going to sell you.
I love the big screen, I'm adjusted to it now.

I tested my friends s4 vs my Note 2. One in each hand, opening apps, etc... my Note was noticeably faster, but it's on Jedi X14, and his is completely stock.

Review
Ok, so I got New Note 3 T-Mobile version SM-N900T which is the latest version of the note. As one of the forum moderators I have always been a pretty big fan of the Samsung phones owning the Galaxy Vibrant, the Nexus, S2, S3, S4, Note 1, Note 2 various tablets and now the Note 3. That said, this is just a 1st blush review for people who might find my views helpful.
The Note 3 compared to the Note 2 is close to an ounce lighter , it is 1/16 inch narrower @ 3-1/16" versus 3-1/8" Both are just under 5 inches. My Hands are big and I am used to the size, the fact that it is lighter really makes it way easier to manipulate
The 1st impression is its lighter weight does not give the impression of feeling cheap. Gotta say I kinda like the back texture. Didn't think that I actually would but it has a nice secure feel.
The screen is remarkable, booting up faster than the Note 2 the Color is much richer than anything else I have experienced shy of a BluRay on my computer (which is a top end setup). Some new stock adjustments allow you to set the standard screen color setting e.g. dynamic, movie...etc.. Also it has a USB 3 socket on the phone for higher transfer rates and of course, it works with a USB 2 as well.
There is a on phone a search feature that is kinda novel phone though I am not sure how useful it is provides features as search last week, last 30 days.... etc
The Camera that is stock does have some nice on-board custom shooting and editing features. The Still Camera is noticeably better than the S4 camera, and the Video like most of the latest phones is excellent. One improvement on the still camera is its Infinity camera shooting. Much Much Sharper now, which was one of my common gripes the phone cameras all seem to suffer from. So this a real plus ! Like All the latest phones the Video is excellent tracks movement pretty well. Better than my Canon in fact.
The phone is pretty responsive and the new software provides custom touch sensitivity and a host of other interactive adjustments that let you make just about every custom tweak you can think of......... Remember this is a stock Rom only rooted...........
Most of the other things on it are incremental improvements compared to the Note 2. FYI the Note became the longest phone I ever have owned and consistently used--- The Note 3 Blew it off the top spot without doubt ....
For those who care Antutu got a 30394 and Quadrant was a 22580.. one thing I did notice is the fps are very consistent @ 60-65 at all vdo benches.
The Things I found I do not like that much are NO Custom Roms ...YET ☺ Battery life is not as good as the note 2 but that was a custom Rom so really not a fair comparison.
The HTC does have the 2 speakers the Note... still 1 speaker. Music on speaker the quality is a bit thin and a bit on the 2 dimensional side, but, For speakerphone calls it is just fine. With the Head phones/buds or Bluetooth speakers it really excellent. That said, if you are a headbanger for over driven bass then use Beats or something like that with this thing that would allow you to over boost the bass in a way some ppl like. This phone is really something it really rocks !
In closing, I am really glad I got this new note 3 if you need a business phones there really is not anything better than this phone.
I have included some photos to show how it takes a shot that is a long distance focal point... This was a rainbow tonight Around 7:10 pm the trees are 45-55 feet away .....
Comments welcome........
How did/do you like the S4? I love the Note 2 on 4.1.2, it's smooth and basically lag free. However I found the S4 a bit clunky and laggy. Could you perhaps comment on how they did with the Note 3? Mainly I remember on the S4 there being some stutter in the UI, and lag in the gallery and Touchwiz browser.
Thanks for any thoughts!

So many of the early hands-on reviews have spoken ill about the new textured plastic back saying that it "doesn't feel like real leather". I've failed to understand the point they were trying to make in that statement. I don't think Samsung intended to fool a single person into thinking that the back was made of leather. They went for a new unique aesthetic that had a functionality benefit as well. In that regard, I think they succeeded greatly.
After getting my hands on one of these in store, I can say that my initial impressions from pictures and videos was reaffirmed. Aesthetically, it's great. I like the looks of the textured back a lot. The feel, however, is far better than I imagined. I expected it would feel like a cheap plastic cover. It is a cheap plastic cover, but it has a unique feel to it. It doesn't feel like leather, and I never once expected it to. It does, however, feel unbelievably better than the previous galaxy line back covers.

The S4 stock was not that good but the S4 with Carbon or any other custom was equal or better than the note 2 but not enough to want to change so I gave it to one of the other employees.... Yeah, I would have run Carbon or Slim on the S4 all day, except for some audio issues that I don't think they have ever solved (it worked but not as well as on TW)... in the end I couldn't get happy with the S4 lol(well I also like the biggest screens now).
The Note 2 I am still using, and still love, and am glad to hear they got the Note 3 running nice and smooth. Will probably pick it up once I figure out the logistics thanks
Just traded my Tmo S4 for a Tmo Note 3 and wow, this thing is a Beauty and the Beast. It's a bit larger than my S4 but after 10 mins of setting it up, it feels like the size of my S4 and not big at all. Doing some reading tonight on the Note 3 and playing w settings tomorrow. My movies look incredible on this phone. The only thing that I have issue with, is the tiny speaker and low volume at max.

Sounds funny but when I pick up and use the Note 3 I handle it just like all my previous phones with one hand unless using the pen of course, only when I look at it do I say holy crap this is big lol. I have regular non gargantuan hands but no struggling to reach a button as on the Htc One or mistakenly hitting power trying to lower volume on the G2. I had an S4 as well and the first thing to go was the stock launcher in favor of Nova Prime, glad to say I haven't even thought of using it with the Note 3, its just so fast and no lag whatsoever. I've even played around opening windows of other apps inside some games I play, writing a document out with the S-pen while inside Total Conquest plundering a village is mighty cool to me.
Today I flashed Darthstalker not because anything in particular was bothering me but I like the little changes he implements and some tweaks plus removing bloat is always a good thing. About that back cover, I love the way it looks and imo this phone does not look cheap at all. I never saw it in black but the white is quite elegant, my daughter thinks its not manly enough but I love my first white phone. I really liked the grip and feel of the back cover, it doesn't feel like plastic, I feel bad hiding it in a case but a phone this size is easy to lose hold of during the hand to pocket transition if you get distracted.
Flashed Darthstalker as well
This did improve the sound, and of course got rid of the bloat..... lame tmo sounds etc......
After using it a day ... I noticed battery about the same, volume is more, and there are some custom screen functions that are cool.
This phone is sizing up to be a real Rock Star
