[Q]. Choppy Video Playback

I'm trying to play some blue ray rips on the GN but the playback is a hit or miss. Sometimes I get sound, sometimes I dont. At times the whole handset crashes when I click the play button and I am forced to take the battery out.
I installed MX player from the market and now I can play them fine, but only in SW Decoder & SW Decoder Fast. The HW Decoder lags, does any one else have this issue? Shouldnt the hardware decoder be much faster ? Maybe my GN is faulty?
i have had 2 GN's now and both of them were choppy in in mxplayer on HW but fine on SW. so not just you.
Cool. Thanks for that. Any idea why this is happening ? Also I can't seem to make Mx player go full screen and hide the on screen buttons, It did it on first launch but not anymore
Have you tried using dice player?

Yep, it lags as much as mx player does in HW decoding mode. Mx player with SW decoding is buttery smooth but I don't understand why
What file compression are you trying? I'm guessing you ripped it at 720 also?
dice player appears to play it fine on HW so im guessing its a problem with mxplayer.
also i have never got the menu buttons to go. it was bugging me also

Hmm, same file lags for me on dice and mx hw mode, but us smooth in mx sw mode. Im using dice player trial btw
I'm not sure if it would matter but do you know if its mp4 or .264? Also make sure you don't have any background operations happening.
yeah i was in trial mode also. dont know what to say. i was running a 720p mkv file as far as i know.
sorry.

Yea mkv runs fine in hw. Its avi thats acting up in hw.
I just tested a few videos and it they both worked flawlessly on the stock video player and MX. My best guess would be that you may have something going on in the background thats using your cpu as well.

I just tried it and I see what you mean by choppy playback. What software did you use when you ripped it?
Edit:
Also its not actually a HD video. - 624x352

Yea I know it's not HD but certain HD videos have same effect. Glad my device is not the only one that suffers on that vid. This was avi demux I believe.
Thanks for testing

No problem. If theres an option in avi demux to encode in mp4 or .264 or something try that. I've tested those types of encoded files and they work great at 720 res!

720p videos not working...

Hi! I have problems playing some videos, particularly 720p movies that I downloaded via torrent. The video format is .avi and i'm using a class 10, 8gb micro sd card. It says unable to play video when i try it on my GW. The video plays fine on my pc through VLC media player, but when I try playing the video using DivX player, an error pops out about audio codec... (forgot the exact error type name) So I assume that the problem is the audio format. Is there any app that can solve this problem? Thanks in advance!

Try MX Video Player. An AVI-File is just a container, so it can contain different video and audio-codecs which the Video player (whether PC or Smartphone) has to support.

THE-E
I will try it as soon as I get home. Thanks! One more question about this app; what are the other codecs for? should I download and install them all for my GW? Sorry but i'm really clueless about video formats and stuff.
May I..??
No need to download any codecs...in my exp,..it's support any vid format.but in particular case,if u want using h/w(hardware) accelerator playing some vid playback and it says doesn't support, just download mx armv7 neon codec...but if u still in stock rom,no need to download that codecs..

Or try Mobo Player. I have positive experience with it.
Use software decoder

Okay, I downloaded mx vid player and the 720p video now plays with a sound but there's a problem; fps was quite low! the video doesn't play as smooth as the other videos that i have.

Buy a fullhd phone if u want a super-smooth fps..!xP..(kidding bro)
Try to switch between h/w decoding or s/w decoding when playback ur vid..tap on screen,u can see on right side there is small decoder option..tap it and choose between s/w or h/w....feel wich one suite u well..there's a small diff in fps on each decoder.

i dont have this phone yet, i want to see if it supports those samples in stock player or dice player or mx player hw mode
Both play in MX...
720p with s/w decoding
480p with h/w decoding
Dice plays 480 fine h/w decode, but stumbles and falls over on 720 s/w decoding.....gets almost to the end of clip, then freeze [old DICE version]
Default video player only 480 plays..

BTW MX Player is awesome video player. I choose it as my default one and I am very satisfied with it.
1024 p movie can be play on our phone but at the same time you will get miss-match voice with motion so no point to play such a high quality movie with our phone..480/ 720 Would be good enough

[Q] Video Player

I'm trying to find a video player for movies and TV shows that has hardware decoding that works. I mostly play Xvid avi files and some x264 mkv/mp4s. I've tried MX PLayer, but h/w and h/w+ decoding is slow and choppy.
Any suggestions?

The Gnex doesn't seem to be very good at HW decoding Xvid AVIs (one has to use an SW decoder, really) but it is very capable at playing any sort of x264/H.264/AVC video in MP4 and MKV containers even up to 1080p resolution. I normally use MX player's HW+ decoder for these and it works brilliantly.
For your AVIs you'll need to try out the SW decoder, the GPU just can't handle acceleration of them. The specs for the Gnex list that it can only play MP4/H.264/H.263 anyway so it's not a surprise. As long as the Xvid AVIs aren't in HD MX Player's SW decoder should be able to handle them perfectly, that's what I find anyway.
Another option that hasn't got as nice an interface but is very capable is BSPlayer, it also works very well but cannot get around the fact that the GPU can't handle XVID.

[Q] Playing MKV files on phone

I bought an Xperia SL recently, solely for the purpose of watching videos. Most of the videos I download have the mkv extension and are 720 - 1080p. I downloadedcl MX Player along with its codec and started the video. The video only works on software decoding and desyncs + lags like hell. I dont want to convert it, as I want to download and watch straight away.
Could you help me out? (except saying that download in some other format)
The stock movies app works for me
Posted by Xperia™ Ion via xda-premium
Try BS Player. Played everything I threw at it with HW decoding.
The stock player just shows a black screen. As does mx player on hardware decoding.
Try MX Player Free or Pro version. Make sure you use the latest one. It played every file i tried.
While playing change the decoding to HW/SW depending on your need. HW is set by default.
Search for MX player in Google Play.
stock movie app is working for me too on .mkv file.

Please use our Q&A section for all questions. See XDA rule #15
@entermetallica:
Same answer as allways.
MKV is no videoformat, it's a container that can consist of audio and video in different formats.
Download the video on a PC, use VLC to view it and then goto Extra/Codec Info.
Post what's there, esp. Mangas are known to use way out of spec coding parameters.
or...
Use VLC like a man
DicePlayer is also a good option.
mx player
try SW, HW and HW+ modes
I use the lastest version of both BSPlayer and MX Player Pro(16bit).
Both play .mkv 720p 6-channel audio movies using HW acceleration on my XPERIA LT26i. I haven't tried 1080p .mkv
BSPlayer uses it's own HW engine and defaults to HW encoding.
MX Player Pro needs to have the HW options enabled in the application settings first.
My XPERIA X10i Adreno 200 running GB 2.3.3(sony fw) uses HW encoding in 720p .mkv movies.. so I'm very sure it's got to work on an XPERIA LT26i Adreno 220 ICS 4.0.4(sony fw)
What firmware are you running???
If you've installed some sort of JB fw ... then true, you may lose HW encoding if the Adreno 220 drivers are not HW enabled in a given firmware not supplied by Sony/Qualcomm.
I use Handbrake on Win7 to encode/decode videos which have default Android and/or HD video settings.

Yup, you've hit the nail on the head. Most likely a codec that's not supported, MKV container is supported by the stock video players and most players form the Google Play market. If we could have a list of codecs that are supported by our Xperia S/SL that would maybe help clearify things.
Using H264 video codec and ACC or AC3 audio in my .mkv container and that's fine with XPERIA S and gives HW acceleration.
