So I'm a bit confused with Google Now, is there any way to install it on a Custom ROM? (Which I think is running Jelly Bean, I'm not 100% sure) I'm running this MIUI ROM, the latest version, but I've got no Google Now. Would I have to flash a stock ROM to use it?
Google Now is part of gapps (which I don't think is included by default in MIUI). Assuming you have those installed, tap the Google logo in the home screen search bar, or launch the "Google" app.
Edit: The normal gapps are available here (make sure you get the JB version). There may be modified versions floating around (something MIUI-specific?); you may want to check with someone more familiar with MIUI first.

What is changed in the 20110307 version of gapps? I am running 0120 so would i just flash the new zip over the old gapps with cwm?
I know at least Maps has been updated in that time, gmail probably, too. What about just going through the market and installing updates?
It also has a working carhome on gingerbread (if you guys didn't have one yet here) and google books. As far as I am aware, you can just go to recovery and flash it directly over what you have now as it just changes the gapps and doesn't touch the rom (worked that way on the eris). As long as you can find the apps on the market (car home wasn't showing up for a while) it should be the same file. As a matter of fact, google voice has been updated since the 3/7 release.
ok, so I got a new HTC Desire HD from my fathers company when we moved to China not so long ago. But the phone had a pre-installed chinese version of Android 2.2.1, which don't even have a app market.
Is there a way to get get google play on it? It's a bit annoying to always search around to find a .apk file of the app you want, download it to the computer, send it do the phone and hence install it.
This would help a lot.
Thank you in advance.
You could always just download the play store .apk
There are 2 at the bottom of the page, either a modified one or the original .apk

Nothing, you need to make your device not look like it is in China or a China version as the google market is blocked in China and on China based devices
Change location of phone

Apparently you need to install the modified version in the link i posted, and when prompted to overwrite select yes
Download the modded .APK file
Connect your device to your computer.
Place the .APK on your device, but don’t use adb install; it won’t work since the Google Play Store is already installed
Open the .APK with a file explorer of your choosing, and install. When prompted as to whether you wish to replace the current Google Play Store app, you select “Yes”.
After a short installation process, that’s all. Your are now able to access unrestricted Play Store app.
Still not working ...

Ok, so I have now successfully rooted my phone, and installed the modded version of Google Play, but still, when I'm trying to launch the application it says; "The application Google Play Store (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.)
Could this be because of a too old Android version (running 2.2.1)? Should I install a custom ROM?
If you are rooted, that seems like the next logical step. There are several 'stock' or 'near-stock' ROMs, as well as many 'modded' to choose from, based on gingerbread (2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 2.3.7). Most ICS are still incomplete although pretty functional.. Work in progress is the phrase they use. Must warn that once you start ROM swapping, it gets quite addictive
Desire HD : CM7.2.0 RC1 : Tapatalk 2.1.0
it worked!

Thank you, I finally got the google plus app to work
But after flashing a new ROM, I got a new problem (as described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1636999) anyone here got any tips for how to fix this .. ? : )
Hi, I've looked around quite a lot and I can't seem to find a thread that answers my question or even one that has the same issue.
Basically, I want to install the PACman rom with JB 4.2.2. I can get that working pretty well by itself, but the issue comes in when I try to install gapps. I've tried several different versions of gapps and every time, the second the phone boots up it says gapps has crashed. And it continues to pop up. The Play store crashes as soon as it opens, Gmail crashes. the Browser doesn't crash, except on download. And with certain versions of gapps, the Android Keyboard will not run (it crashes before it even opens every single time).
I've found other threads that talk about similar issues with the Galaxy S3 that tell me to go into Settings>Apps>All and enable Download Manager. I can't find that anywhere (which might be the real root of the issue I suppose). I see lots of other activities, all of which are enabled, but no Download Manager or even anything that really sounds like it could be a renamed Download Manager. I've hit the "Restore App Preferences" button too. No good.
I've deleted everything, wiped all possible caches, and repeated the process about 15 times. I've used different orders of doing things (that I find on different forum posts), and different versions of both gapps and PACman. I don't want to go below v20, I don't think, v20.1 doesn't work because WIFI doesn't work (known bug) and I can't find anything higher than that even though I believe v22 is the latest.
I have installed custom roms before. I'm currently using AOKP 4.1.2 and everything works fine with that.
Any help fixing this issue or any alternative suggestion that gives me jb 4.2 would be GREATLY appreciated. I am going for a daily driver rom, not something experimental and (overly) buggy.
THANKS!
PAC 20 is 4.2, did u manage to flash with gapp 4.2 ?

I tried that yes. Though all the PACman stuff says to use 4.1 and it'll work fine. I tried both. Though 4.1 seemed to work "better" than 4.2. As in the keyboard worked.
I think I fixed it
Pretty sure I fixed it. The issue seems to have been that PACman didn't come with DownloadManager.apk ..... Not sure why or if I just happened to download from a bad source, but in any case, that would certainly prevent gapps from downloading things.
So I edited the rom, added DownloadManager.apk from another rom I have on my computer and flashed that with the 4.2.2 gapps. Seems to work great so far!!!!
I tried posting about this on the actual Villuminati thread [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540250]
but can't because I haven't made 10 posts, it would make more sense to me to ask for help for it on that actual thread, but whatever.
anyway, I keep getting a notification from Goo.im about an update to my ROM, however when I tap the notification it opens goo.im and nothing happens, I got a popup a while back about goo.im not being used anymore, but for the life of me I can't remember what I'm supposed to use now. currently I have Android 4.4.2. Villuminati has been updated to 4.4.4, but I'm not sure how to update manually without re-flashing everything. Can I just install the ROM from the recovery menu without messing anything up?
I'd love any help that anyone an give me.

I use ROM Manager in place of Goo. If you want to update Villuminati, you will have to go back and reflash the Gapps. The good thing is if you do it from the installer located in about phone, you will not lose any apps you have installed except Google apps. they will have to be re-installed. I went through this last night when updating Liquid Smooth ROM. The ROM installed and I lost ALL my Gapps.

ok. thank-you, I will look into that.
Hi everyone
I have got a Samsung Tab Pro 10.1 (SM-T520) and it unfortunately stopped updating due to it been so old and was left behind on android KitKat 4.4.
So I decided to root it and download the lineage update to get android 7.1.2 custom ROM on it and give it a bit of life instead of never been used because it's slow and blotchy.
When I download the ROM everything worked really well, moment installed Gapps it when pear shaped. I was met with "android is starting" message stopping me from do anything but go on settings through notifications bar and it made my keyboard disappear.
So I just flashed the lineage ROM back to standard without Gapps. I have tried most of the Gapps packages that they make and I get the same thing every time with the missing keyboard.
My real question is can build a set of google apps through apk. I have tried installing google play, google play services and google play frame something (can't remember the last one) all of them either don't work or crash and just not stop being up a message saying each one of them isn't working.....what apps do need to install or flash to build up my own set of google apps without using Gapps
(Just some notes at the end to help, I rooted using root genius, my custom boot is TWRP, I installed TWRP via odin and lineage seems to be the only ROM that does a android 7 for my device, the apps I want working are google play store, google app, google maps, google assistant (if possible), gmail and maybe calender. The rest of them are on my non rooted s7e so don't need them on the tablet.)
Hope someone can help
