Seidio extended backdoor and Active case pics - Galaxy S III Accessories

Update: swapped Seidio case for modified $5 bumper case + Seidio holster (details in second post)
Just some pics and first impressions of the combo.
I decided to order the extended battery and case/belt clip combo from Seidio. Just got it yesterday and charged it overnight. Working on discharging it before I go to bed... at 60% I had to watch a Youtube movie with the speaker on and wifi about 2 1/2 times.
I am not going to do a battery review but here are my reasons for getting this. I wanted an extended battery so that I can use all the battery draining things all the time without worrying about the battery dieing on me half way through the day. Yes, I can turn everything off and have it last 3+ days on the stock battery but wanted everything on for use at a moments notice as well as long phone calls, internet surfing, Navigation, WiFi, 3G+ (Tmobile 4G), GPS, Sync, possibly WiFi tethering in the future, etc. I liked the Seidio reviews and backdoor/case look and wanted the belt clip anyway.
Anyway, I really like the Seidio extended backdoor. I like it soo much I regret having to put it in a separate case... it feels good in the hand too. The battery is big and heavy (feels like the phone's weight was doubled). I don't know if the Mugen battery is the same size or not, as I didn't see any threads comparing the two. If I find reviews saying that the Mugen battery lasts longer I might have to get one before my next long trip (I realize they advertise it at 4600, but haven't read a comparison review to the Seidio). I like the Seidio back a LOT. However, the Active case really adds to the bulk and gives it a much bigger feel. I ordered a cheap bumper case which should be here in a couple weeks, but if worse comes to worse I could always cut down a normal case... I didn't have the heart to modify my Otterbox Commuter.
Extra plus and minuses... First, the kickstand is nice and is held closed by a magnet.. if you want a kickstand. However, it adds to the size of the case, which is already pretty big. Second, the case/backdoor shape seems to improve the sound from the speaker. Last, although there are protrusions holding on part of the rubber sides, I doubt they will stay in place with a sliding fall on the face. Not a huge worry, but for such a large case I wish the front was as secure as the Otterbox was... after all, the back is just protecting the Seidio backdoor, which I'm not as concerned about anyway.
As a side note, the Otterbox Communter fits fine in the Seidio clip holster.

Hope this helps some of you considering this case.

Update: added pics to this second post of modified $5 bumper case used in place of Seidio case (will use Seidio case for harsher environments)
Another side note: Even without the backdoor and rubber undercase on, the Seidio battery does not fit under the Otterbox Commuter case... it is too big. The Commuter would have to be cut to fit the battery through. I have considered turning the Otterbox into a bumper case, but don't have the heart.
I've just came back from a two month trip in the Philippines seeing all sorts of environments and never really needed the extra protection of the Otterbox. I think if I go on other extended trips in rustic environments I would be fine with the Active case... although I believe the Otterbox Commuter holds the lip over the front a LOT better.
If anything, I might get a baggy case for taking pictures in the rain... I wish I brought it during the last trip since the Philippines was in the rainy season and there were many times I should have taken vids and pics where I didn't because of the rain. I tried a freezer ziplock bag which worked fine for screen controls but made pics very cloudy and blurry.
Updated pics of modified bumper case; slightly loose in Seidio holster but have been using it with the holster for a month now with no issues.

Thanks man. This is absolutely perfect. I've been looking into this but have been kind of skeptical. I think I shall get it now. It's just so expensive.
Apparently the Hyperion 4200 battery works with the seidio case. So I might get that battery and just buy the back door and active case from seidio

Otterbox Commuter case review vs. Innocase Active

im just doing a quick review on the otterbox for the evo and comparing it to the innocase active which I had before the otterbox.
for a complete more full fledged review on the innocase check here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699888&highlight=innocase+active
also keep in mind I cant take any real good pictures with the case on the evo because the evo is my only camera
as far as the build quality goes its amazing, VERY slim, very stylish. When I first got my innocase active case I thought that was top notch but the otterbox commuter one ups it in quality.
The main downside i've experianced with the innocase active is over time (and ive had since day 1) is that the rubber/silicone starts to feel real cheap almost like it loses its grippyness. It starts to get more oily almost. While the plastic on it is decent, around the edges the silicone starts to losen and while sliding it on a table over time, the plastic on the case is wearing.
With the otterbox how the plastic goes all around the edges on the side, its VERY firm and no moving of the silicone except on the top and the bottom which I like alot. Also it has a cover for the headset jack, and the charging port/hdmi. also almost forgot to add, pushing the volume and power button on the otterbox are ALOT easier to press and feel leaps and bounds better.
In the end I love it, alot slimmer in the hand compared to the innocase active.
I just like how it feels so much thinner than the active case but at same time, feels alot more durable/protective
just some pics below, (also pics are taken with evo, so take that as you will, and pics with evo in case those are taken with my laptop webcam.

HEY! There's no brushed metal on it like on the website
Thanks for the review.
Do you know if the Otterbox case fits inside the Innocase Active's Holster?
and actually i dont know. i wanna know that as well because im looking to get a holster and it seems possible the active case holster may fit this?
anyone?

There's no brushed metal on it in the pictures on the website either.
Just copped one today...the screen protector is a pain to apply. Got a few air bubbles, think I may take it off, wash it, then reapply it.
Wait a minute. Does the case completely block the headphone jack? That combined with that egregious charging port blocker are deal breakers.
can you do a drop test comparison with the two? I'd really like to know which one is tougher..
I just ran to the local sprint store and got 2 of these. I don't know if this is national but they had a promotion where you get 25% off when you buy 2 or more accessories.
Even with the discount, it's still a bit pricey at ~$29/each after tax. But it adds little bulk, and what feels like a lot of protection. I also like the fact Otterbox throws in a full-face screen protector - completing the protection package.
first off, no the headset is permanently blocked. its a rubber stopper over it. and I LOVE IT, very firm, looks and feels great.
and as far as dropping, not gonna go all out, but have dropped it a little bit and so far so good holds up amazingly well, just the firmness and build is great.
and well most sprint stores do 20% off for 2 or more, and if your a premier cust its 25% off.

usually air bubbles are caused by dust/debris under the film. what i do is use scotch tape to pull up the edge of the screen protector, find and remove the dust/debris and press it back down. it usually takes me about 20 minutes to apply a screen protector perfectly, but my house is pretty dusty!
It does have that greyish look to it on the website. Kinda deceiving
actually....still very nice.
OP....thanks for the review.

I'm getting tired of the rubber piece that covers up the HDMI / mini-USB slot... it keeps opening up on me in my pocket. It seems the side with the mini-USB opens first.

Seidio Innocase Extended

After I got my external wall charger I quickly became tired of removing the battery door just to remove and swap my batteries.
At first I cut out a section of my seidio extended battery door to allow me to pop my battery in and out very quickly but it left me with the problem of keeping the battery secure while I was using the phone. That's where the Innocase extended comes into play. I had cut my extended battery door on wednesday, ordered my innocase on thursday, and received it at my doorstep friday morning. You can buy just the innocase by itself (without the battery/door combo) from amazon but unless you cut your door like me or just want the added thickness and weight, I don't see very many people buying these.
http://www.amazon.com/Seidio-Innoce...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1284823928&sr=8-31
What was nice about this is that the Innocase extended snaps over the extended battery door and is held by the sides of the phone. It's now easier to remove the case without fear of breaking any tabs and I never have to remove the battery door since I cutout a section for the battery to simply drop in and out.
It does add a bit more thickness and weight to the phone but for me personally it works since I prefer to keep my phone in my pocket versus a holster or belt clip. The added weight is a plus for me because I would actually drop my evo alot more when it was using the stock battery since it was so light (for me at least).
Now for pics.
A shot of the innocase off, my battery door with the cutout, and my second battery. I have the second battery door on standby since the one I cut was already missing tabs and I'm just waiting for this one to give out.

Sideshot of the innocase cutout around the volume buttons. It really doesn't hinder access to the buttons at all and in my opinion helps to protect them a little better from unnecessary button presses.
Innocase on. It lays over the extended battery door and snaps onto the sides of the phone. Very secure.
A shot of the area around the camera.
This one is the bottom. The kick stand is still easily accessible and functional. The pic is blurry because I was too close to the phone when I took the pic.
You'll notice from the pics that there is no top and bottom coverage of the phone. This is why the case is easily snapped on. For most this would be a deal breaker since they would want protection all throughout the phone. Personally I am fine with the way it is setup.
great pics. very cool in my opinion. I just ordered a seidio innocase rugged, and after seeing your post, wish I would have got what you did. thx for sharing your photos.

It's definitely worth every penny. It can even be used over the stock battery door too. And think about this...if you use it over the stock battery door you can keep a second charged stock battery in the hump for a quick swap. No need to dig for the second battery and it protects the camera when you lay the phone on its back.
nice idea
I like your idea, tempted to give it a try, cuz I know just where you are coming from. Popping off the extended battery back plate can get very irritating.
I was thinking since you have cut off the area on the back plate there will be a small gap between the back plate and the innocase. I was thinking just to insure that you battery dont jar out (even slightly.) You can add like a cushion (something heat resistant)on the inner side of the Innocase plate to help keep the battery push snuggly into its home position.

No need. I have purposely bumped my evo in a way to try to get the battery to break loose enough to cut power to the phone. The gap is minimal and not enough to allow the battery to shift enough for the contacts to seperate and I have not had the phone go out since doing this.
By all means you can use anything you like to help close the gap but if you decide to do this I think you will find the gap to be very little cause for concern.
Good luck.
The only problem its that there's no holster yet for the extended case. For me that's a deal breaker. My evo is naked with the seidio holster. I hate not having a case but I NEED the holster.

It's not for everyone I know that. For the people who don't mind the added thickness and weight of the extended batteries this is something they may like to do especially since the extended batteries MUST be charged in an external charger.
As for myself, I can still fit the phone in my front pocket and it actually feels like it isn't going to snap in two when I sit down. Not everyone's cup of tea but just showing what I am doing with my evo to give people an idea of what they can do.

You can use a dremel or a triangle blade. If you choose the blade you have to be patient and have steady hands. If you choose the dremel you have to use low speed and still be patient.
I personally used the triangle blade to score the cut lines, then the dremel to cut most of it off, then the triangle blade again to finish off the edges.
I would suggest one or the other or both depending on how comfortable you are with either option.
Charging extended battery
It was mentioned that "the extended batteries MUST be charged in an external charger". I have an extended battery and charge it just fine while it is in the phone. I do not use an external charger.

Next time charge your extended to full in the evo. When it is full, power down your evo. Wait about ten seconds after it shuts off and reboot then observe your charge level. It will not be full and more than likely will be less than 80%.

Agreed....
I just got my Innocase extended in. With a small mod, the PT holster that I bought from best buy(it was the PT version of the innocase and holster combo) will work with this installed. You have to be a little careful taking the phone in and out of the latch but it will work for now. It fits without the mod but has a little play in it at the top. A thin strip of foam glued on. I used one of the small black squares that came with the packplate of a cpu heatsink.

cut gel case to fit seidio battery?

hey guys.
i'm going to be getting the seidio battery 'cause i really need the extra battery life on my phone. but i dont like the idea of not having a case on the phone. i also recently did the whole scraping the black paint off the plastic to show the red. so i was thinking one of those clear gel cases would be nice to 1)protect the phone 2) while showing off the black/red/black look.
could we/has anyone cut the back of a soft/gel case to fit the extra bulk of the seidio battery, leaving a space in the middle for the battery part to come out while everything else is protected by the case?
let me know of your experiences and/or ideas on this
sounds like a great idea, Ill probably do the same thing, But you gotta think of some way to keep the battery within the phone, since it will be exposed, Maybe a little peice of screen or reusing the cut way gel
i dont get what you mean.
doesnt the seidio battery come with a battery cover? i would assume this battery cover would snap in place like the stock one and the phone could be used as is. adding a gel cover on top wouldn't mess with that. the only reason i'm thinking of cutting the hole would be to fit a case that I dont otherwise think i'll find to fit the seidio battery...

Oh I was assuming that you weren't going to use the back cover. But yeah that sounds like a good idea.
I was thinking of getting one of those Hybrid TPU/Polycarb cases and just breaking the polycarb to make a sort of "bumper" type case. I need a case that can be on with the inductive charger and not look nasty. What do yah think?
Yea I'm going to try and fit a chinese crapper 3000 battery and put an otterbox over it. Anyone else let me know if it works. Thanks!

I believe that it would work. I bought one of those case and it arrived with the hard platic already torn away from the tpu. I am suppose to receive a replacement, though its been two weeks already so who knows. Anyways the TPU itself wraps around the phone pretty tight like a bumper. I have not receive my extended battery yet so I cannot test but it looks like it will work.

That looks about the same as how I cut my TPU case, except I left more on the back of my TPU case...
What your seeing is the entire tpu on these style of case. The rest (back cover) is actually made of hard plastic. You can tell with the plastic being clear while the tpu is smoke color. The two material are glued together. Mine must have been torn during shipment. I believe this is the style of TPU/Plastic hybrid case Childofthehorn was refering to so I took a picture since mine was already torn. Plus I have an extended battery on order.

Case + Holster Round-Up!

Hey guys, just putting together a thread for a round-up for Cases for the Galaxy Nexus that includes/has a Belt Clip Holster with it.
Looks like Seidio came out with their famous awesome Surface case with holster combo, unfortunately it's like the Nexus S case because of the curve/humb on the back, so it's not a slide-on case, it's a snap on front/back, which I didn't like on the Nexus S.

Seidio Active Combo Case with Holster:
Active case is a combination of silicone and hard plastic.
Works with GSM 2000mah Extended Battery, VERY tight fit though

Anyways just searching on eBay found some case+Holster combos.
Posting it here to ask if anyone has them, or want to buy them and let us know!
Qmadix "Holster Shell Combo"
Works with GSM 2000mah Extended Battery.

Verizon's Case + holster combo kickstand (Exactly the same as above but with different pattern):

Verizon sells it in a bundle (with car charger) and seperate in stores. Online only the bundle.
Otterbox Defender Series:
Looks like holster can be used both screen in and screen out.
http://www.otterbox.com/Samsung-Gal...or=20&start=1&cgid=samsung-galaxy-nexus-cases
Generic:
This one looks like the Qmadix case/holster but is a bit different:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Protector-C...rizon-Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-i515-/310364277257
Generic Case, 2 piece snap on like Seidio Surface. No felt inside. Very cheap price:
http://shop.htcpedia.com/galaxy-nexus-holster-case-combo.html
Anybody find any more?
Can you also point out those that work with the extended battery?
I have an Otterbox Defender, phone can go in both ways. Screen out for if you want to use the kickstand.
are there any non-defender holsters that cover the top and bottom of the GN? once the horizontal dock comes out in the US, i'm getting that, and i'll be taking it out of the case often.
UPDATE, found another case/holster combo.
I really want to get a holster for the gym, but I haven't heard enough about any of the available options to order one yet. Hoping some owners will chime in here!
Of course not to forget the official Verizon shell/holster combo.
It has a built in kickstand.
I'm using this one right now actually.
I have the Qmadix and it takes a little flexing to get it right, but you can use it with the extended battery. I've had multiple Qmadix shell/holsters for multiple devices, and they never disappoint.
Seidio released another case: The Seidio Active case. I'm hoping that the size of the case is similar to the otterbox Commuter; and I will be using them in conjunction. If not, I'll probably try to mod the otterbox to fit. here's hoping.
Anyone try just a holster with a jel type case?
After the incredible and losing one from the Verizion case I'm not going that direction again.

That's good to hear as I just ordered one of these off eBay.
I used a side pouch for my Droid and was thinking of doing the same for the GN but it's just too darn slick to easily grab and putting a case on it makes it too big to remove from the holster w/o using 2 hands.

Looks like Seidio updated their website to say that their cases are compatible with the LTE and International GSM version now. I also emailed them earlier this week and they said they're compatible with the same case.
Anyone have the Surface case for the GSM yet? Is the phone loose in the case?
i got my seidio active tonight, great case and holster. it's almost the exact same size as the surface case and you can use the extended battery and extended cover without any issues. THIS will be the case i use for the phone.
I have the GSM version of the Nexus, I am also interested in both the Seidio and Qmadix anyone here know or can report if these cases/holster work on the GSM version ? are they tight fit or a bit lose ?
thanks

Can you post some pics? If this is true it'll be the case I use as well. Currently using the Verizon shell/holster without the battery cover and I dont much like having to leave it that way.

sure..
they seem to have cut down a little on bulk from the other active cases, as far as protection level goes i'd say it's a little below the defender but will suit my needs just fine
the small gaps between the skeleton and the silicone on the bottom of the phone back and front are due to the extended battery and cover in there. i personally have no problem at all with these gaps since the case flexes to accommodate the battery rather than compresses too tight and force fits it.
if you want any more let me know

Seidio ACTIVE Case w/ Kickstand 15% Off Coupon

I've been waiting for a nice looking case with a kickstand. I just found this ACTIVE case from Seidio, looks like it just came out. I went ahead and ordered one. I'm hoping it will work with the extended battery, but if not... I may try just using that one as a backup. It'd be nice to find just the spare battery charger. I really don't want to buy another battery.
You can also get 15% off using the coupon code "winter11". Anybody else ording this case?

I'll order when blue or red comes out. Or white.
Rabble rabble rabble.
The kickstand is cool but the sides look really ugly to me and if you don't put your fingers there when you hold the phone it might feel awkward. Bonus points for covering the top part by the ear piece though.
i had an active on my droid x and was pretty happy with it except for the size and weight, but the otterbox defender for the gnex is just WAY to big (IMHO of course). functional case and holster combos are few and far between and seidio provides a solid product.
right now i'm using a surface, have an active combo on the way and i'm praying they come out with a naked holster since once the 3 pin docks start showing up i'm not gunna feel like case stripping to dock all the time
I've had the Seido Active for my TB. While it's a great case! It felt extremely bulky and made the screen feel smaller. I went with the otterbox commuter this time. Seido is great! I dropped my phone dozens of times with no injuries to the inside.
Anyone received their Active yet? I'm looking for a review. I'm a long time Seidio Surface (Innocase) fan but they are on backorder and I like the idea of a kickstand.

YES! I want a kickstand. I saw the Verizon case with kickstand and I wanted it but I have the extended battery and I refuse to go cover-less just to have a case fit it. I've been using the hangout on mobile a lot and it sure would be nice to have a kickstand so I don't have to hold the phone up all the time as well.

Is the commuter about the same size as the active? I also used an active on my TBolt. Wanted to try Otterbox this time around though, and the defender is just way to big for me.

What I want to know is anybody with an otter box commuter have a seidio active holster? If it fits that might be the match I'm going for. I love the slimness of the commuter but need a face in belt holster for my job.

I just got my commuter in last night. Otterbox has two day fedex shipping for under 6 bucks! Can't beat that.
I'll post comparison pictures tonight of my old active next to the commuter. The one thing I really miss is my kickstand, I feel so naked without it heh

Who actually has the Seidio case? Is the kickstand for it any good? I am also interested to hear if it fits on a phone with an extended battery.
Hey guys, I have the Seidio Active Case with metal kickstand for the OEM 2100 mAh hour battery, and I love it, BUT, there is a problem with it I figured I'd let you all know.
The metal kickstand and the thickness of the bump for it, interferes with NFC. As you may know, the NFC antenna on the Galaxy Nexus is actually in the battery, so it's as close to the back of the phone as possible. The Seidio kickstand goes right over the middle of the battery. It is very difficult if not near impossible, to do things like "back to back" transfers with my Nexus 7
(especially while my Nexus 7 is ALSO in it's Active Case. If I take the plastic outer part of the case off, that contains the metal kickstand and the bump, and just leave the
silicone/soft inner on the phone, NFC works just fine.
But with the outer part on, NFC is very hard to use for back to back. With a NFC terminal like for payments, it works better (as they generate a larger powered field - I test them
at work actually as part of my job).
I let Seidio know this, they don't have a plastic kickstand version for the OEM extended or their extended. I suggested they move the kickstand up higher, or re-engineer it to be
thinner and plastic.. but no changes yet.
For now i take the outer shell off when I want to use NFC back to back
You also can't get the cases for extended batteries in anything other than black.. I wish I could get Red for it
I found even with the extended battery there are NO gaps in the case! just pull the plastic a bit and its perfect!
Oh and if anyone still wants one for a bit cheaper I am selling mine cuz I gat a new SIII ;] http://www.ebay.com/itm/281037616353?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l264
