Reliable Rom? - Acer Iconia Tab A100

I got my dad the A100 for his Birthday(54th) back in April. He uses it to play games like Angry Birds/fruit ninja, read books on the Kindle app, listen to music and surf the web occasionally. He enjoys it but he complains that it acts weird. It will boot him out of the kindle app, it will switch to another book that he isn't reading at the time, and some other buggy things. It is running the official ICS update. I was wondering if there is another ICS rom(or maybe JB) that is reliable. He is a casual user and doesn't need all kinds of crazy tweaks and customizations. Just needs his tablet to work right. I am familiar with rooting and flashing roms. I have a custom one on my phone, but not familiar with his tablet or the roms people have created for it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Flex reaper is the most popular modded stock ROM and is stable.
I prefer CM10 but Id try modded stock just because ICS is what he is Familiar with.
Sent from G2x running BuROM v0.2 (root; mod stock 2.3.4) w/ faux's GB kernel 014b2-ext4.

Thanks. I will check it out!

If his main issue is with the Kindle app, I would start there, by reinstalling/updating. Even checking online for similar issues with the Iconia's and the app. Even something like a factory reset (backup files on the internal memory) may iron out some bugs, especially if it was an OTA to ICS.
But I agree if your set on flashing, Relix Flex is very stable and an ICS rom.

I don't like ROMs bloated with apps, cm10 was great for me, stable, fast and not bloated!

Well some idiots harrased the devs so many have stopped or taken their ROMs down. There are some good private builds, but your going to have do some digging. Im am not at liberty to discuss them, as asked by the devs who created them.

Idiots is incorrect, idiot is more correct... besides that now. Sdx may have something in the works but I don't think it necessary, I haven't found anything that doesn't work, and its quite fast. The private builds are an alternative method of activating the combined bar, don't ask me how, and I don't recommend them for everyone. Also, there's a super awesome memory usage bar. If you really want a copy just message the devs!
PS. Hahaha....

Nexus is boring...

Hi there
I got a Docomo Nexus. I have a galaxy s2 also. I thought I would had the same challenges here...
Guess what... i installed Cwm. The only challenge for me. Installed latest Akop and for the first time I am not changing a rom from 3 days. Everything works here.
I am getting bored. please give dome directions to have fun and play with my phone.
For example. Is there a kernel that gives somehow better battery life? Any other rom better than Akop? Any substitute for macro feature missing in the camera app?
I used to search for perfection in galaxy S2 and I was switching between cm9, custom roms to find a perfection...please understand me, hope so...

First of all, AOKP is not the best ROM. CM9 is faster and Slim ICS is the fastest ROM with the same features as AOKP.
Secondly, I'd recommend finding something else to do with your time than worry about how your phone is "boring".

Play Frisbee golf with your nexus?
zippity doo da.
Finding the answers to the questions that you asked is half the fun, for me at least. If there was a definitive "best" ROM or kernel there would be very little need for such a development based community. If you are looking for fun I would suggest looking at the market for one of the many games available.

What is true differs for every person. For example, you couldn't pay me to use AOKP (do not ask why, I won't tell you).
Do I believe that any rom is faster than any other? No I do not. Do I believe kernels can change that? Yes I do.

So what do you use? I see you're a developer: do you have your own rom? Pardon my ignorance I'm still new here. Have yet to remember a username and connect that with the work they've done.
If I guess right will you tell me? Do they work for the government and have installed keyloggers so when we say anti obama things to our friends in texts the black choppers will show up at your house, and if you tell anyone they will kill you? If so I wouldn't use it either... Or tell me why
I have gone AWOL as of last release (too much personal business to handle) but I work with a team. We put out BAMF Paradigm. I am but one member, and certainly not the main one.
My reasonings for not using AOKP are not because of that, however
I use Paradigm 1.2 with my own modifications.

i started with AOKP and never regret it, i also tested SlimICS which for sure has not same features as aokp, i also tested liquid which is nice but only english, i also tried cm9, also nice but i miss the aokp stuff in it.
For me AOKP is the best, i always come back to it and now i will stay with it, it has everything i want and just works.
For kernel i use Imoseyons Leankernel which worked for me always the best, i get around 3h also sometimes 3 1/2h screen ontime with it, and over night it loose almost nothing.
I tried also francos kernel, which is also nice, but with it i had sod issues and other stuff, but it is still a good kernel many people love it, i will stay with Leankernel.

Nope. I've already stripped out a lot of things I don't use from the build that I ran today and plan to keep it that way. Drk-hd is working on CM10 looking at his github and I'm sure he'll do a better job than I can do.

Correct. Basically everything that doesn't work in any other rom doesn't work here either. The only thing broken that does work in the others (to my knowledge) is voice search (it never stops listening to you).

I've got a stupid noob for you about your CM10 build. If I wanted to build my own from the CM source and I followed Drk-hd's instructions in his github, I'm not clear how to incorporate the Evervolv inc code. I see a line where he grabs his github directory for the inc. I think the line he refers to as finishing setting up the repo. Should I replace his with the respective evervolv repo?
sorry, might be a dumb question but I'm new to the whole Android source code thing. Just looking to make my own builds so I don't have to wait for everyone else's.

Albinoman's Jelly Bean ROM boots and runs already. It doesn't have HWA, so the animations are a little slow, but overall, performance is pretty quick. All of the main features work just fine, including Google Now. The only big issue afaik is the non-working camera.
BTW, the Dinc is only 2+ years old (released end of April, 2010), but still very impressive that our old phone can still run the latest Android OS.

EV said they had HWA working on the nexus one and the only changes for that lately have been kernel related and the kernel base is the same for the Inc. Considering how much faster and smoother this build has been since using the new kernel changes, I'm assuming that they are related. If there's more to come to gerrit, then hot dog. For now, I'm quite happy with JB on the inc and any additional speed/smoothness that comes will just be the icing on the cake.

Third. It's surprisingly table, smooth, and snappy. It's only going to get better from here as begins to add in customizations. It's more reliable than most ICS roms out there right now. Do yourself a favor, you won't regret it.
CM10 will not come officially from the CyanognenMod team. I'm sure someone will port it over however. Like stated, Albinoman has an AOSP port but, no, this is not CM based. I'm itchin for a CM10 port too, and Will probably remain on CM9 until then. Albinoman and Evervolv have done some great work getting JB stable, so we have them to thank for where we are at right now with jelly bean!

Great, I have that too. Looks like yesterday's build introduced new problems, horray. This one a is a few days older, but google now and voice search work. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ffq7l5nrz76neie/cm-10-20120821-UNOFFICIAL-inc-stable.zip
How does this build compare to albinoman's? I love jelly bean but miss some of the Cyanogenmod features. If this is a solid CM10 ROM, I would love it! Is it stable enough to be used as a daily?
As I said, everything works, but the camcorder (to my knowledge), at least on the latest build marked stable. Yesterday's build, while "stable", kills google voice, so I'll have to see if I can figure that out sometime.

Don't use BT, so couldn't tell you. Auto brightness doesn't appear to, and hasn't really worked since GB, but you can change both it and the volume just fine, if that's what you're asking?

I don't use google voice to text, but EV has this commit to fix it http://review.evervolv.com/#/c/3004/ and I don't use their repo for libcore and CM doesn't have that commit, so it should work. Only way would be to test. The only force closes I have are on last nights build with google voice and I'm 99% sure the build that's running now fixed that.

[Q] Yet another what's the best rom thread: ICS and stable?

Greetings everyone,
I would like to start off by apologizing for bothering you folks with yet another "what's the best ROM for having X and doing Y" thread, although I felt that after searching I had a rather specific criteria, which I'm hoping someone may be able to address.
I have been using Virtuous Affinity for awhile now, and frankly I'm starting to feel old It seems like ICS has been out forever while I'm still on gingerbread. I am a little unclear on what the official status is of ICS support though; I thought I remembered hearing some talk about HTC potentially having an ICS based update in the works, although past that I know nothing. Browsing around, I'm a little discouraged by some of the known issues ICS roms may have; no camera support, broken audio/bluetooth, things like that.
What I would optimally like to have is a fully functioning ICS ROM. Stable, good performance, nice on the battery, etc. etc. UI wise, I have become accustomed to HTC's Sense UI, but even then I'm very foggy on what the differences are between their major versions (I've been hearing of 2.0 and 3.0). To be honest though, I wouldn't mind trying a new UI. I've liked the one Samsung puts on their Galaxy SIII.
Above all, stability is my goal. I'm not too comfortable with the trailblazing "nightly" builds and testing ROMs; having a working phone is pretty important to me. Now you might say, "Well, why even root to begin with?" Okay, I like to experiment a little bit
But I digress. What is there in the wonderful and magical world of ROMs?
P.S. I think it would be really useful if there was a sticky going something like "State of the ROM", which pulls together a list of ROMs and highlights their features and issues in an easy to compare manner (so a step up from the currently stickied ROM compilation thread)
Right now chillybean's paranoidPAC
And preludedrew's Evervolv I can recommend
Viper and MIUI are both ICS and have everything working so far

Another vote for Evervolv it is 4.2.2 JB and everything works great except video camera. PAC is also good but it is only 4.1.2 afaik

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I suppose I might want to give Evervolv a shot (Wifi is fixed I hope?) although I'm a little unclear about installing it. Most OPs post a tutorial for flashing ROMs, and while I would feel a little more comfortable flashing Evervolv on my own, it seems like there a new hoops you have to jump through for flashing ICS/JB roms. Could anyone guide me through the steps?
If you are rooted and have installed a custom recovery, go ahead and download the ROM of your choice, then install it from the recovery using install zip from SD card, then install the correct Google apps whether 4.2 gapps or 4.1 gapps
After that you restart and wait for the room to boot.
I highly recommend installing crossbreeder after the first boot, and then you are done!!!
If you want concider v6 supercharging your phone or what i used NOS

Why would you start by apologizing. You are acknowledging that this is redundant. Read the threads that are already there. You aren't asking anything new. And even if you were, you could ask in an existing thread. And if the rom doesn't give specific instructions it means you flash it the same way as any other. Read the op in the thread for each rom and try usually state what works and doesn't.

Never seperate I think you should be mod for the inc2 threads. You're always laying down the law.

I'm not trying to be a butt head. I'm still learning too. But if you already know the question has been asked (and answered) multiple times... Read the answers that are there.

I think you might be misunderstanding my OP... Yes, I am aware that the general form of the question has been asked, although I wanted to see how the community felt about the priorities I put forth in looking for a ROM (hence why I later suggested that a sticky stacking the ROMs against each other with their features and flops would be useful). I realize now that a lot of the ICS roms don't exactly meet what I was looking for anyways, and that I would have to take some relatively larger risks. Alas, I am going forth with trying one of the suggested ones.
And I believe asking in another thread would be considered hijacking by most forums? I see it's not explicitly mentioned in the rules, although I would expect people to keep questions to their own threads as a matter of courtesy.
I sometimes forget people can't hear the tone my tone of voice when I type. I meant laying down the law in a good way.
To the OP. Perhaps you would like to work on your suggested project of comparing the roms and once then we can all add our input to your list?

I didn't take it negatively. And your suggestion is spot on with what I was about to reply. Something my pastor says when people come to him with new ministry ideas, "that sounds great, I'm putting you in charge of that committee." Usually people want stuff done but want someone else to do it.
People don't generally make those threads because like this one they get redundant. The features are listed in the rom thread. Questions pertaining to the rom are asked in that thread. If someone wants to make a thread like you suggest that's fine, but what happens is someone comes in and instead of reading the rom thread they start asking questions in the new thread that have been answered already and the op constantly has to refer people to go read that thread.

The latest evervolv jellybean build has been working great for me. Wifi sometimes doesn't seem to toggle on and off as well as it should, but it works well enough.

The camera on aosp isn't as good as sense in my opinion anyway. I just never find myself using the sense launcher and therefore the sense widgets anyway, so I generally stick to aosp.

What about speed? I love JB and ICS, but can't deal with lag, need working Wifi and Tethering, and no longer have tons of time to flash over and over. Got a newborn, in school full time and still working full time. :silly:

Mod that you can flash on any jelly bean rom.
Can you customize the navbar to add more buttons / change shortcuts? That's a feature I can't live without.
nevermind, saw my answer in the other thread. it's aokp based so yes it does.
Any plans to update it to a 4.2 base? I would prefer to stay on the latest.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm definitely checking this out when I wake up, downloaded and ready to go! But just curious, also yes that is toro ported and works just fine.
Edit: Fantastic ROM, has done stuff I've wanted for months.. and that's where it ends. I honestly will not use this ROM until it changes base. AOKP is the worst, that's my opinion but you got yourself a fantastic ROM here. If these apps and various other apks aren't framework dependent then I'll use some in a different ROM.
Again amazing ROM, you have done what I've been trying to do for months and namely the walkman widget is one. I hope you change the base.

It is great, but a little laggy. Will it get faster in the future? As well as this, the themes do not work. Any way to fix this? I am not trying to be mean, and by NO means am I a developer. I am amazed how you got this to work, and just want to help.
EDIT: The lag fixed itself, I dont know what happened. That is fine. Only problem is It wont reboot after first successful boot. It probably is Android Tweaker Pro. It is a great app, but also caused my stock rom to randomly reboot.

To answer a few of your questions. (Im updating thread now to)
1. I do plan on updating to 4.2 just need to update the code a bit and wait for the lockscreen to get ported.
2. Yes its based on AOKP 4.1.2
3. My rom is different because im going to take the time to keep it updated with anything new and im always constantly working on new ports to add to it. Its also more featureful, and its going to support toro and toroplus as soon as i get 4.2 working.
4. WHY YOU HATE AOKP SO MUCH? JK im using any base that i find most stable, im pretty sure im going to switch it for the 4.2 update since AOKP is constantly releasing updates for it and it will be hard to keep up with it.
5. Lag? I really have not noticed any lag besides the Xperia live wallpaper, thats sony's fault for not optimizing the app properly.
This ROM is running great. Loaded lean kernels latest stable 4.8 and all is good. A nice break from AOSP.

Oh, I've never heard of this then lol
The AOKP hate, its opinion but on both devices I've owned they been just so horrible and cheesy.. I don't like that swag button. The features are lacking. Honestly I'm on a stable base of 4.2.2, using Orca. The features are just amazing. I'm guessing because I tried the apks is that a lot of this framework doesn't really work for 4.2.2? I mean this is basically an Xperia ROM. I'm really impressed, I'm really hoping we can eventually get an actual port but I doubt it.
Secretly "I want a W8 port" love the style they use. Call me whacky lol.. But this is awesome you've made a breakthrough, or well your the only person who technically cares to do something like this. So I appreciate it this a lot man.
Edit: 4.1 doesn't bother me, we basically miss out on the status bar features. Just the base.

Just a quick note of congratulations and thanks, +Hyperrunner. I've been with Android since the first G1s were shipped, and this port reminds me of all the really inventive, well-done ports that we saw for the G1 back when other devices and models began to appear. I've been waiting for a really cool port to put on the GNex (which has had excellent but slightly bland firmware as stock from the beginning), and this Xperia port of yours really hits the spot. I think the AOKP base was a great choice. If it plays well with Linux Deploy and continues to be stable, this will become my primary ROM. Thanks a bunch, you deserve donations for your contribution to the Android community!
Thank you this ROM is pretty sweet love the look. Nice to have something other than stock for once

You say there is Bravia Engine, is it just not a setting and always on? If that is the case, awesome.
Yes, bravia engine is always on its more of a configuration then an app. Its always one and it helps display pictures better.
