I would like to apply the silent camera modification. I just got the phone, so right now everything is stock. I read through the discussion thread regarding this modification, but it isn't clear if rooting the phone is required. From reading the thread, the modification is applied through CWM. It is also stated in the thread that someone was able to simply download this modification to their SD card and then boot into the recovery and apply it.
I applied a similar modification to my previous phone (Samsung Epic), but I know that I didn't have to root the phone. I did apply a custom recovery so that I could fix the GPS. What I'm looking for are the steps to apply the silent camera modification to the Galaxy SIII without needing to root the phone. Can anyone help me out?

Can't be done. If you don't want to root, you'll at the very least need to apply a custom recovery. Could just do it temporarily, apply the mod, then go back to stock. Best advice you're gonna get

Hello to all.
I have had my G2 for a month now.
This is my first android.
I was wondering if maybe someone could please clarify some questions I have about Rooting?
I apologize in advance for any questions I may ask that makes you say"Are you effing kidding me?!?!"
1. Is rooting pretty much clearing off your phone and installing a whole new software??
2. If i ever want to come back to stock tmobile...am I able to? (will I even want to??) lol
3. I know gingerbread is coming...how do those updates work on a rooted phone?
4. What precautions should I take when rooting my g2?
5. What is cyanogenmod?...
Sorry for asking these "obvious" questions, but I am trying to understand everything before I try to root my device.
Thank you to all!

1. rooting makes it possible to flash new roms (which do require you to wipe your system, but once rooted use titanium backup, free app, to back up ur apps on the sdcard)
2. yes there are a few threads on here that walk you through on how to turn security on and install a stock rom
3.as far as i can tell you still get the t-mobile updates sent, and developers here take the new software and make it available to run on our devices.
4. Make sure your device is charged and follow EACH STEP in ORDER and copy the commands CORRECTLY.
5. "CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android 2.2 (Froyo) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone." so in short they develop software.
I'd like to add that you will get updates a LOT faster with a rooted phone vs stock OTAs

Sorry, that's not right. To the OP - Rooting gives you access to the "root" user on the phone, which allows more powerful customisations and allows certain apps to run (those which require root).
S-OFF (security off) is the thing that allows you to flash custom ROMs. You could root and not touch S-OFF, or you could both root and S-OFF.
Neither of these require you to wipe the phone. But you need to be very careful in understanding what you're doing when you do either of these steps.
Hey all...
To summarise:
- I want to create a definitive and easy to follow guide for the following:
- I am using a GSM Samsung Galaxy Nexus, in the UK.
- I would like root access (Super User).
- I don't want ClockWork Mod Manager (permanently, if I need to use it at some point).
- I don't mind learning to use ADB, but please bear in mind that I am an ADB Novice.
- I DON'T want a custom ROM (I want to keep the stock firmware).
Details:
So first things first, I know there are other threads relating to this topic - however I still feel a bit unsure about the whole thing..so my aim here is to get some clear cut advice, and then hopefully create a guide for people who have the same aim as me in the future.
I've come from a HTC Desire, which I felt I needed to root in order to overcome some of the handsets shortcomings - for example the lack of native App2SD+ features, and poor battery life. Because of this I felt the need to alter the stock firmware and replace it to better suit my needs. (With MIUI, which I'd highly recommend for anyone using an older smartphone)
With the Galaxy Nexus, I feel that the firmware itself is not a problem. I would, however, still like Root access so I can install Root only software, such as AdFree.
How would I go about this? I don't really want to permanently flash ClockWork Mod Manager or anything that makes it obvious the phone has been Rooted. Rather, I would like access to be available but take a back seat (if that makes any sense)
If ADB makes this possible, I am not really comfortable with it - BUT I would be willing to learn
I hope I have made my question clear, if I haven't then please let me know! I look forward to your replies, and thank you for your help in advance
Amar
First of all, this isn't the place to post this.
and you have to install cwm to get a custom recovery, then you can put back stock recovery (don't see the point of this... but whatever).
You can flash a stock rom that has super user... thats the only way to do it

Wrong, he doesnt have to install cwm to root: just booting it with fastboot and flashing a zip containing su binary/superuser.apk or supersu.apk will do the trick.

@op, read stickies in q&a thread before posting. Start in efrant's android 101.

Use the guide in my SIG.
Just ignore the part about making CWM stick and you'll be fine.
Had a few questions here. I researched and found this tool. However, I can't post in the thread to ask questions because of my noobtasticness and I searched and couldn't find a similar problem elsewhere.
My first question is, can I use the root and backup tools in the toolkit with no access to the screen whatsoever? I damaged my phone and the touch and lcd screens aren't functioning, but I can plug it in and access memory via usb.
Secondly, I've received the replacement phone. Is there an order I should do all of this in? My first guess is to root/backup the old phone (if possible), then activate the new phone, then root/restore on the new phone. Does that sound about right?

Thanks, I found that thread too actually, but this phone isn't rooted. I was mainly contemplating root, if it's an option, as a way to take advantage of the more expansive toolset/backup options available to rooted phones in the toolkit. I just wasn't sure if rooting was an option for a phone with a broken screen.

Awesome, thanks. I checked on that post and someone responded about having usb debugging on...which I don't. So it looks like I may have to just do the straight backup without rooting unfortunately. :/
You don't need root to use my method, you just need a custom recovery...and remember NOT to boot into the system at all, only recovery or else the stock recovery will be reflashed

Followed the instructions on the post, and when I get to "./adb devices", I get "Permission denied" in terminal. This is with booting into recovery.
That means that the adb binary on your computer doesn't have executable permissions. Nothing to do with the phone.

Ok, so tried this again, as I'm less familiar with terminal on my Mac than I am on my PC. Got my device discovered, twrp.img loaded into tmp. But when attempting to install I get a "/dev/block/mmcblk0p18: cannot open for write: Permission denied"
Hello everyone!
Recently my phone started to run very slow (I'm assuming I installed some crapware..) so I thought it may be a good time to finally do a Factory Reset of it. Since I'm about to do it, I decided to do the thing I SHOULD'VE when I first got it, root it. However, I've got some questions that I can't really find answers to, hence the thread.
1. I plan to use "HTC One V All-In-One Toolkit" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1676686) for the process, but a tutorial thread on how to do it manually caught my attention. In the thread it's written:
Or download one of the Superboot that relevant to your device HERE

When I first got the phone, one of the numbers on this page matched with my phone's in Software Information (I thought it was Software number). However, now it doesn't match any of the numbers there, so I want to make sure that it's still possible to root a GSM One V?
2. Before rooting I am of course going to flash a recovery (TWRP as delivered by the Toolkit) and do a backup of the ROM. How big is the file going to be? Will a 4GB (3.6GiB) card be enough for it? Is there anything special I should keep in mind before backing up?
3. After root is done I'd like to be able to OC the phone. From what I found out so far I need a custom Kernel for it. I looked around and I see many people use Titanium-KISS kernel. That raises three questions:
a) can I flash a custom kernel for the STOCK ROM? I don't want to change the ROM to another. At least not yet.
b) is it possible to test a kernel before permanently? Like, boot the device using it without overwriting the one that is already on the phone (kinda like in UNIX systems you can keep older kernel versions just in case). And in case a kernel will not work and the phone will hang, since there is no way to remove the battery, how can one do a hard reset of the phone?
c) When reading Titanium-KISS thread I don't see aything about fixing the issue with the stereo playback on the phone's speaker (as in, only the left channel plays). Does this kernel have that fix? Or would I need to get another one? In that case, what stable kernel with ability to both OC the phone and audio fix would you recommend?
4. Chainfire 3D. I read mixed opinons about it, some people say it works without problem on One V, some say it crashes the phone. What is the safest way to check if it will work? Just install it and if it will screw up just restore a TWRP backup?
I think that's all the questions I have for now. At least, I can't think of any more right now. I attached screenshots of Software Information in case it's needed. Thank you in advance for anyone that will respond.
DELETE
Reflash twrp then wipe the cache and data partition then reboot.

Did you try factory resetting from within settings on the tablet?
If you did that was your first mistake.
Twrp is now stuck in a loop trying to execute a script created for the stock recovery when you tried to reset from within settings.
You cannot factory reset from settings when you have a custom recovery installed. You have to do that from recovery itself.
No worries it's easily fixable, simply head over to sammobile or samsung-updates.com and download your firmware. Then boot into download mode and flash with odin.
After that you will be back to stock.
What was the point of that!?
In future anyone with a post count of less than 3 won't get advice from me.
You're going on my block list!
Overreaction much?
This is the OP by the way. I did that to have this thread deleted as I have solved the issue on my own. I eventually downloaded stock firmware and flashed. And yes, I did go to settings and tried to factory reset.
I figured I would edit posts and put "delete" for mods to delete the thread since it was solved and I no longer needed any help. And I'm on your block list for that? Really?
I do have a question if you even care to answer... Is there any way to root the device without TWRP? I don't want a custom recovery. Just the root. All I want is to be able to remove bloatware and able to use the "factory reset" from settings if wanted.

No its not an overreaction.
If everybody deleted their posts after getting the answer then nobody would benefit and those that help solve the problem would be wasting their time.
Its highly disrespectful to the forum and other members who try to help.
You have a very low post count and that is not the way to conduct yourself if you are a new member.
I suggest you have a peruse of the forum rules to understand what I'm talking about.
You have already broken 2 of them in the first few posts you've made.
I can't help with your question as you have left no info whatsoever as to what model you actually own.
Ok, I apologize. I didn't think it would be a waste of time if you had actually helped the OP, which you did.
By the way it's the OP, and for some reason I could not log into my other account. So I had to make another.
Anyway, what I want to do is root my tablet, but with no custom recovery. I just want to be able to remove a lot of bloatware and if I ever feel the need, reset the tablet like normal from settings menu. And also able to do software updates, OTA. If I can. Really all I want to do with root is just remove useless apps I will never use. Free up some space/save battery and such. Not much else.
So I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, model SM-T800, running Lollipop version 5.0.2. I rooted my tablet using a CF-autoroot + TWRP before. But is there any root file that is just the root that will work for my model/android version I am running? Thanks for your help thus far.
OK that's better, but just a word of warning, you've created 3 accounts. You can get banned for this. If you have problems with your accounts contact a moderator.
Anyway go to this link for just root.
With root you will lose ota. However it's no big deal as all updates are available at sammobile.

Thanks for the reply... I know, I didn't mean to make another account. Sorry about that. If a admin can, they can delete the first two accounts since i no longer have access to them, and will be using this one as my main one.
Anyway I followed that link and I see the Odin flashable root for my device. Will it work for Android lollipop 5.0.2? I notice it says it's for android version 4.4.2.
When I first tried rooting, I found a root file and it didn't work. I had SU installed, but when I opened it it would ask to update binaries and then fail.

It will work fine.
Yep, thank you it worked.
Another question, is there an easy way to unroot, then do software updates, then re-root? Or is that too much of a pain? I dunno if you can turn root off using SuperSU, or if you need to install firmware to get rid of the root.

Well if you find your firmware for your device on SamMobile, flash with FLASHFIRE keeping root.
You may find you keep root and be able to ota , but you may have to factory reset first.
It worked for another member.
Hmm. If I did a factory reset, would all the bloatware apps I removed return? Or will they be gone for good?
