My Epic is prompting me to do a system update to EL30 while on a custom ROM. This has never happened before and I'm sure I shouldn't let it update.
What do YOU think?
sent from my secret underground bunker
mine did this am too..running cleangb, trying to Odin back to EC05 and then going to root, flash EI22 and see if it lets me update after I try OTA rootkeeper (if compatible with the epic, never installed it before).
Otherwise, trying to remember the root/recovery install method if it doesn't work so I can odin back to stock and hang with the custom roms until the EL30 gets nand-modded Let you know how it goes in a bit..
Try just updating the modem. That should stop it. If not freeze system updates with Titanium or Bloat freezer.

Updated modem. Was still being prompted to do a system update after two reboots. Froze System Updater using TB.
Am running GleanGB BML with Samurai Seppuku, btw.

All good now? I have never gotten an update notice. Maybe because I update the modem before I ever get one.
Nope. Still receiving the notice. And system updates is still frozen. Weird.

What happens if you accept the update and either pick install later or let it fail?

I am on CleanGB MTD with the CrispyClean theme. Yesterday I Odined to EC05 did the 2 flashables to get the modem to EL30 and then reflashed and restored CleanGB. Got the update this morning. The notification was annoying the hell out of me so I just let it try and update. It rebooted into recovery and failed. I pulled the battery, and rebooted and all is good now, no update notification. That was only about 5 minutes ago, so I will let you know if it comes back.
Thanks Coycaine.

Just a quick update. About an hour and a half later, no more update notifications or anything that seems to be screwy. I did reboot just to make sure, and everything is running fine.

Turn off OTA altogether?
Is there a way to turn off this automatic OTA crap? So in the future I don't get nagged about some update that I don't want (or cannot) install?
I'm on a rooted CleanGB and I'm getting nagged by my phone that it wants to install the OTA update. I'm not sure what it will do -- just fail to install and not harm anything?
I didn't even think I would get OTA notifications if I was on a custom ROM.

Just let it try to install and pull the battery when it fails.
I've never had an update try to install before either.

Copy this apk into dir /system/app with root explorer

I got my notification to update to L710VPLG2 and chose the install now option. It failed because I had CWM installed. Doh! I forgot to remove CWM.
So, I uninstalled CWM, unrooted and went back to the stock recovery. Now the Device Status is: normal.
However, I can't get the device to find the update when checking Update Samsung Software.
When I reverted to the stock recovery using this method, it went back to PALF9 with a date of Wednesday May 23. Before I installed CWM and used EpicTeam's recovery last week, the phone was updated had a date of June 28.
Any ideas? Does anyone have a download of L710VPLG2 available?
Many thanks!

I see it's a zip files. So, reinstall CWM and root. Then apply update?
When i installed the other update you had to be on a stock unalltered rom, it can be rooted though, install the update in cwm then install root and then reinstall cwm, and restore nandroid.....reboot

Unfortunatley the install fails both from stock recovery and CWM.
I get a long winded message that says: Verifying current system... assert failed. Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip.
I am choosing the ZIP file you provided both in stock recovery and CWM.
CWM probably doesnt read the update script the same as stock. It looks like the stock recovery is looking for the update in a different location "/tmp" I would just go back to complete stock, get the update, then restore data.
I flashed the .zip from CWM successfully....

Went into CWM and chose the ZIP file, installed and you were good to go?
For me, when I removed CWM, it also downgraded my kernel.
I think I'm going to revert to stock removing CWM and root in hopes I get the OTA.

OK, back to stock recovery and no root.
I'm curious though, why would http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/sprint-sgs3-stock-restore.html downgrade my kernal?

I was hoping there was some sort of manual or push check besides the one under Settings, Update.
So, when I reverted to stock using Team Epic's instructions my kernel went back a month in date. Screenshot 1 is from when I installed CWM and rooted. Screenshot 2 is when I removed CWM and root using Team Epic's instructions.
Obviously, I've rebooted quite a few times without any further notifications after the initial one failed.
Check out the attached files.

I am willing to bet a DEV out there will work on a rooted stock rom with the latest...at least there will be an updated custom rom in the next few days..bet freeza, phantom, clark44 or kmullins will have a custom ready in a day or two. They are nicer anyhow, I mean, isn't that why we are all here?

Every 5 minutes I get prompted to install the update. I have done everything humanly possible to get rid of it (to my knowledge and of asking around). Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the update? I don't even know why there is an update when I have a custom ROM.
Rooted Phone w/Blazer ROM 1.6
I even unrooted my phone, went back installed the update, and re-rooted my phone and its still there!
I clear dalvick cache and it buys me another day or 2 before I start getting prompted again to install it. How can I get rid of it, any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!
And yes, i've seen other posts and did the radio change and other installs as well that were "supposed" to fix it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805618
Try the suggestion there. Worked for me.
Of course, since you're on a custom ROM though, you should make the edits yourself.
I made the change, rebooted into recovery and wiped cache partition, and no update notification since.
On my epic when I had it rooted and was getting bugged by an update (not sure if this will work on this phone) I would let install and let it fail (it was rooted) pull the battery and restart the phone and it would go into clock work and I would restart from there and it wouldn't bug me again till my next reboot.

This works for me, I kept disabling things till I found it and narrowed it down:
1. Install "system tuner" by 3c
2. Go to "Startups"
3. Scroll down to "google services framework" and tap it
4. UNCHECK anything to do with "SystemUpdateService"

Had my GS3 for a few months and it's been great! So I got my GF hooked up with a Sprint GS3 as well (she loves her gadgets, too):good: but it's still on ICS and not getting the JB update from Sprint. What's the issue? Tried the system update/ reboot / etc. Hers is not rooted. How do I get it to prompt her for that update?
Thanks!
Very easy process, go to system settings, click on applications Manager. You will see tabs at the top (download, running, all). Go to the all tab and scroll down to Google service frame work, click on it and on the next screen click on clear data. Go back to system update, this will show you available updates. If you don't see it in first try, do this for few more time and you will get the JB update.

Don't accept an OTA if you're rooted. If you're rooted just flash a JB ROM instead. If you accept an OTA with a rooted device you run the chance of losing root.

Provided you have a custom recovery installed (CWM or TWRP) you can accept the OTA update and it will fail because you're not on the stock recovery. Doing this will also help to avoid the repeated OTA notification. :good::good::good:

I'm getting the Chameleon FC, and the persistent HandsFree Activation on every reboot. All started when I lost wifi on the LK8 update zip (I was rooted, thanks to Voodoo OTA rootkeep), and tried to get back to LJC...
I'll quote myself from another post (written in a slight daze late last night:

Sprint is apparently replacing these for this error. If you go into the store and have them look at it. I've been told that Sprint is replacing these devices as there is no fix until the OTA is released. That's just what I heard.
I would definitely be back to stock before paying then a visit.

Do you have the download link for the ALJ1? I'm gonna try that to see if it work.
I went back to lj1 and let it update to ljc. Errors stuck around. Only way I've avoid the errors is by leaving phone with lk8 which lucky for me works perfectly.
I did try the store replacement thing but they wanted to give me a refurbished phone as replacement. I am going to wait for an update and cross fingers it works without error.

I had to get a replacement but I received a brand new phone right out the box because the tech said they didnt have any refurbished ones at this point.
