Hi, I've been running a custom Rom for a while and decided to return to stock, so I restored my cwm backup, refreshed stock recovery and OEM locked my phone but my ota update still won't install, does anyone know what I've missed?

do you installed the right stock recovery for your stock rom? it must match the base number of your rom ...
Hmm, maybe not. I'll look into that, thanks.

The software version and recovery version are both 1.28, so I don't know what's up with it.

Have you disabled or removed any stock system apps?
I had similar problem after restoring stock recovery and OTA update was still failing until I restored apps I had disabled.
example: I had disabled by renaming 'Weibo.apk' to 'Weibo.bak', and OTA update kept failing until I renamed it back to 'Weibo.apk'.
In other words to perform OTA update you have to restore all system apps also.
hth,
merv77
Good tip, yeah I probably did have disabled system apps to be honest. I've gone and installed the latest ruu now, takes the hassle out of things.
Thanks for the help.

Hi everyone,
I have got a rooted HOX, and I flashed what I think is a custom rom. I did this beacuse I am getting prepared for an ota update and my bigger question is if with this rom I will be able yo receive the official update.
Here are the details of the rom.
Thx.

As long as you have a stock recovery you should get the updates. It looks like you are on the 1.29.401.11 rom so you should. But you will lose root after you get another update.
As i see this is stock rom and you will have ota update.

Why root if you want to wait for OTA updates?
Because when I bought it it was already rooted...
In fact I dont know what to do... Stay rooted, or unroot it and receive OTA updates.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
You certainly will.
As far as you come back to your stock rom, you will get your OTA. you need to download keeproot app from google play to stay rooted though.
And on another carrier ??? Just wondering.

As long as your device has the stock ROM, yes you will receive the OTA update even it is unlocked.
To successfully install the OTA, you need the stock recovery.

Yes, if there is an update for your device. Make sure you enable all the apps that you disabled if you did that before. If you did not disable any app, then you are good to proceed the update

What was the process you followed to get there?

Downloaded ruu, relocked bootloader by fastboot OEM lock or whatever it is and installed ruu by opening executable ruu file on my pc. Maybe do I have to flash recovery with the stock recovery? At the moment it just resets factory settings if I try to go into recovery...

Although I'm not sure why we need this, we know which RUU works.
Try

It might sort your recovery out and won't hurt.

So I tried flashing twrp recovery and its knocked out my sensors again. I've updated to 4.04 and when I tried installing my ruu I downloaded it said wrong version but its the same one I used before I updated to 4.04. What ruu version am I supposed to have now?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
The ruu updated your hboot. The old ruu has a lower hboot version. I think you have a ruu on the 1.29 base you need a 2.17 base ruu now.....please correct me if i'm wrong here mates !

Ok So I used the ruu to find out what version I should download. It is my current version is 2.17.980.6 and it wanted to downgrade it to 1.29........ So obviously that won't work. I went to the same thread I used when downloading the last ruu but can't find the 2.17.980.6 ruu anywhere. I'll keep searching but has anyone seen it??
So I rooted and unlocked my bootloader on a stock HTC one brand new from radio shack ics version 4.0.3 I want to know if I do the ota update will I suffer any damage to my phone and will it wipe? Also I have custom recovery so I have to choose zip file from downloads. I'm new to this phone do any info helps. Thanks

I don't see any harm in taking the update. Afaik it is just a radio update which can be reversed by running the ruu back to an older version. Try it and let us know your results.

It brings me to the cwm recovery menu and when I locate the update -sdcard/downloads/update that's where it is, it says this software could render your phone incompatible but it's an ota update
So it should work. I'm just scared to brick this phone I just got it two days ago so I could return and say it's not working I want another but I got it on sale and I don't know if they would do that or if I have to pay the extra 100$ which I can't do. Do if it doesn't start up what could I do to fix it? Like when you flash you have to fastboot a boot.zip file right? How do I do that? I'm still on stock obviously and I have a backup of my current status and completely brand new stock, thanks guys

To install the OTA update, you'll need to restore the stock recovery, stock kernel, and most likely relock your bootloader. If you are using Virgin Mobile, be warned, the OTA is not compatible with any roms or kernels available now. If you try to install any custom roms or kernels, you will be stuck in a bootloop and will have to RUU back the older version to install them.

Ok thank you I am using virgin mobile but I like the stock phone I feel changing roms is too much work and I feel as if I won't like them plus I need a computer 24/7 and also I don't feel comfortable with switching back and forth all the time if I don't like anything. Mods can delete this if they'd like I got my answer thank you guys

Weird, I just put my phone back to the Tmo version from being converted to EU and the last OS update I got was 4.20.531.4 and then came the 3 little updates for preperation for Marshmallow. Nothing after that. Should that matter that I didn't get the Stagefright 4.20.531.5 update?

You're right, I should have paid closer attention before posting.
Assuming the update does come soon, and I get impatient, how would I go about returning to stock/unrooted in order to receive it OTA? (I'm stock, rooted, s-on)
Short story, you need to restore a non-root backup and the restore to stock recovery. The version of stock and the recovery need to match. Also I believe ( but could be wrong ) the version will match the hboot that you have. This is why before you root, you grab a copy of the ROM and recovery and save them.

The update will fail. OTA the updates from T-mobile need to have you on the non-rooted, non-modified stock ROM with stock recovery installed that matches the version of the ROM.
That is why before I installed TWRP - copy the recovery and ROM and note the version in the filename. Also because I run stock more often than I run rooted, custom ROM, etc. I usually leave the stock recovery inplace and use the command 'fastboot boot twrp.img' command to boot into TWRP. This way I use TWRP but not have to restore my stock recovery when needed.

When the update rolls out I will need to unroot and reinstall the normal recovery?

Hopefully they are fixing any bugs that plague Android 6.0, if that's the case, they can take all the time they need to make it right.
