Which radio/modem is considered to be better for data speeds - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

plz post your opinions.
regards

Honestly its all about the area you are in that determines that so you will have to try some
But some popular ones (and ones that have worked for me)
Fh13 (worked great for me)
Fi25 has been good
FI03 had been reported to work well...wasn't so for me though
Also remember to update your PRL/profile after flashing modems
-TeaM VeNuM Like A Boss

Tried Fi25
Didn't like it
Somehow it made the battery drain pretty fast.
The signals were better though.
Thanks a bunch for the kind help mate.

In my area FF18 is pretty solid... one of the best I've used. I tried FH13 but I wasn't too impressed.

Just wanted to add this for anyone who stumbles across this thread . All modems can be found here. and for speeds I've noticed at least with my location the speeds don't change a bunch between the ICS modems. Battery gets better with the newer ones.

Fastest Setup I've ever experienced

Hey guys and gals-
Just thought I'd share with you something I'm really excited about. I've been flashing pretty much everything that has come out over recent weeks, and even months. I just was on CM9 build 3.1, which was incredible, but unfinished. I thought it could be my daily, but it started to go into airplane mode and lose mobile data randomly, so I had to restore. After doing so, I feel the need to share with you a setup that I am blown away by. It is:
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.6)
FB 21 Modem (Steady's newest release)
EL29 Kernel (I know some might be upset it's not the newest available, but go with me here)
Everything is just SO ridiculously snappy, I can't believe what I have been missing. Since the "about phone" only has Gingerbread.EL29 in it and not the rom's developer, I can't be certain about the specific ROM I used but I'm fairly certain it's Blazer.
Anyway, enough of the rant. I suggest those who need a break from flashing all the newest things give this combo a try and let me know if you have a similarly enjoyable experience!
Out of curiosity, how long have you been on this setup?
Surely one of the [email protected] here will chime and tell you of a better way to be certain who's kernel you're using? I could be wrong...
Ill check it out now. If nothing else it will take my mind off the fact that I'm jones'n so hard for CM9 Alpha 4, so why not.
Any particular flash order? ...flash this combo all in one CWM session, or reboot in-between? ...etc. Any additional details you can provide would be helpful. I'm bored atm anyway.
Thanks for the info.

Just about six hours now with about 1.5 hours total of voice calling and consistent texts. Hasn't slowed down, but if there are any major (out of the ordinary) changes I'll be sure to report.
Just had to comment cause I saw Tucson

Unfortunately like I said, this was a restore which ended up keeping my FB21 Modem with EL29 Kernel. So I don't know the recommended way to flash, but if I were to do it on my own I would probably say format all, blazer EL29 ROM (with kernel), and then this morning is when I actually ODIN'd the FB21 modem, so probably boot up, turn off, enter ODIN download mode, and do that last.

Ha, awesome. I'm originally from Boston but I'm here for work, I don't mind the weather lately but it's definitely not true winter.
I can confirm my blazer 4.0 setup on stock EL29 kernel with FB21 modem is insanely fast, super long battery and no problems. I highly recommend it!

I ran this for a few days before going to the FB21 Leaked ICS ROM from Calk. It is very nice.
I ran the fb 21 modem and everything was really awesome. except gps. gps sucked miserably. when I was using fb 15 it worked fine so I have since gone back to it.

Another good sign. I think I need to stop typing and start flashing.
So to be clear FB modems work fine with Gingerbread ROMs? No issues flashing? I was kinda on the fence about it. Im waiting for a stable ICS ROM.
Nevermind flashed it anyway on Blend 2.6.2 ROM. No problems.
Edit, weird LOS issues moved back to EL29.

In that case, your sig needs updating. Lol j/k. Were you using FB21 in combination with Blazer 4.0 and EL29, like the OP? Just curious...
Yes, no issues. A great improvement, actually.
For reference, here is a screenshot of my home screen. Note the status bar....can't recall exactly which ROM this is from but it's pretty distinguishable. My favorite thus far.

Galaxy S2 SPH-D710 Model Same as EPIC?

So a friend of mine wants to root his S2. He tells me the model # is SPH-D170. Samsung shows both EPIC & S2 are that model.
I just wanted to confirm if someone can tell me that the root instructions for the EPIC and ROM's work with the sprint S2 as well.
Thanks!

If he wants to change ROM's.. he can just put the phone into download mode, flash a kernel via Odin that will have a custom safe recovery. I suggest Agats kernel found below.

Switching from EVO4G to Epic Touch - Where do I start?

Hey guys,
After two years of use, I finally managed to shatter the screen on my HTC EVO 4G. Now that I'm due for an upgrade, I'm going with Epic Touch 4G as LTE network won't be in my area for another year.
I've been browsing the forums and after lots of reading, my head is spinning.
There's all these acronyms.. like FF18 I don't understand.
I'm getting a brand new Samsung SII Epic Touch 4G tomorrow from a Sprint Store.
I plan on using some form of Cyanogenmod if available.
There are TONS of root threads that I've found - Where do I start? Which one should I go with?
Sorry if it's noobie questions, but I appreciate any answers. Thanks!
Read the stickies sections in the forums. Ff18 is a ice cream sandwich build, its just the build date. F=2012 f=June 13th. Fh13= 2012 August 13th etc. Qbking77 has helpful videos on YouTube. Just read in the forums a lot and read the stickies section and you will pick it up. Enjoy the phone. It depends on what build you are on to root. Sfhub has one clicks for every build I think.

No rom will require a modem to be flashed. As modems are sepreate from the roms. Only time you will flash a rom/kernel/modem all in one is the one click .tar odin. You can flash modems independently.

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the help.
I have successfully rooted my Epic 4G Touch and flashed CM9 Alpha 6 on it.
Thanks SO much to QBKing77 for his very intuitive and simple videos.
My next question involves CM9 and Wireless Hotspot
I noticed that whenever I activate Hotspot, my 4G disconnects and falls back to 3G.
I have searched on Google and saw that this is a relatively common problem, but is there a fix? If not, are there any other AOSP ICS-based ROMs I could use that have portable wifi hotspot available with 4G?
Thanks again guys.

Hey mate, thanks for the contribution! Downloaded and flashed while running SlimBean build 3. Not sure if it's just me, but I seem to have poorer reception with the MC3 Modem than I do with the MB1 Modem. With MB1 modem, I had a signal of -98 dBm. With MC3 modem, I get -120 dBm. I ended up flashing back to MB1, thanks for providing a download though!

Ive noticed that different modems act differently in different locations. For example some modems work great on the west coast and don't work good on the east coast etc. I would just stick with whichever modem works best for you in your area.

check the jellybomb thread this has been an issue for all the new modem josh doesnt want to update to, hopefully he does sat some point lol. but just to let you know what you're looking for you have to manually edit some build prop lines to say MC3 instead of LJ7. doing this will also stop the update from popping up if thats happening to you as well.

Agreed. The modem will refect the build separate from the build prop. Also packed this modem in a zip directly from the odin tar released by sextape AND tested the zip. After flashing it reflected MC3 and i had no issues. Several members of my team and other xda members have reported that they've flashed it through CWM and mobile Odin with the same results. I do believe that you must have flashed the wrong zip.

[Q] Modem questions

hi all,
I didnt find any threads that answered my question well, so if its a repeat my apologies. I am running Blu Kuban 1.0.5.4, it runs nice and smooth, i love everything about it, but i dont know JACK about modems in this sense. In about phone it says my modem is FF18, which seems right from everything i HAVE read lol, but then the BK build # say FL24.
i have read that GB and ICS modems are interchangeable, but i have no knowledge of where to start or IF i should bother messing with it. i know i have to travel to downtown orlando to catch a 4g signal, and 3g kinda sux and i get almost nothing inside my apt, and wifi is alot lower than i expected given i run a full dual-band DDWRT gigabit cat6 network.
so the crux of the question is the modem in the build number what it seems like? are the 2 conflicting or am i just misunderstanding al together lol and more, is there a better setup i can use, i know that tends to be phone specific but it seems like in general some prove to work well together and some dont.
thanks in advance for any/all help

FF18 is fine to run in BK FL24. Both are ICS. However, modems vary from phone to phone, location to location. I would try updating your modem to FL24, and after you reboot, update prl and profile, and see if that improves signal. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But the short answer is no, the build is not conflicting with your modem, it's most likely the area you are in. Play around with other modems, see if it helps! Good luck

ok so i tried that...wifi speeds jumped up by like 5 mb/s on the download side but i lost all 3g/4g capabilities...hmm, i used the kuban updater to d/l ffl24, and it all went smoothly, is it possible i missed a step in the process, i have read that some people need to re enter msl or things like that my cell # is right but the msid looks like someone elses phone # and prl is 21097... so im not sure if thats right or not lol

Hmmm, sounds like you may have flashed a bad modem. Flash back, see what happens, then try another ff, fi, fk build

thanks, i tried a couple of different modems from the series' you suggested and none help, and most actually caused reboots and lockups, so im back at the FF18 and im gonna call it a failed experiment...im almost always on the wifi anyway but, it was worth a try

What method are you using to flash? Flashing modem shouldn't be causing all that

great inglihd
for the first one the FL24 i used the internal updater built into BK, but after that i switched to mobile odin bc i was afraid it was an updater issue...though my battery was a tad low but it was on the charger, and a straight wall charger too not a usb to my pc charger. ah well im not sweating it, like i said im mostly home anyway so having a kick ass rom thats rock solid is more important anyway lol
Not sure if you know but mobile Odin does not support the flashing of modems for the epic touch. It may look like it flashes but nothing happens. Either desktop Odin or recovery is the only way to flash a modem.

wow..no i didnt know that, some of the other boards hinted at it working through mobile odin and some said nothing at all, a friend however said it could so i took his advice...its possible he had the same thing where it looked like it flashed but didnt...it would explain the probs i had with the other modems lol

Read RWilco's comment in tutorial for flashing TAR and TAR.MD5 files, and it is a blanket statement regarding modems and Mobile Odin/Mobile Odin Pro (don't do it).

I don't believe this applies to GB and ICS modems. Let me check SXTP for confirmation.

I don't chance it flashing any modems. Everything else, sure. Modems, I use CWM exclusively.

with that in mind i will try using only cwm, and see if that makes a difference...thanks all for the help and the quick responses you guys all rock! im not a complete noob with flashing and such, but im not a pro either, i spent alot of time in IT and helpdesk, but now im back in school for programming, still only kinda towards the end of what would probably still be considered an apprentice level code monkey and while i some experience with linux/unix, in that realm i WOULD call myself a noob lol
ok so...i guess i have one more question, im running Blu Kuban, which uses a modified AGAT recovery...is it ok to flash a modem from that or should i just stick with desktop odin?

It's ok to flash from that. If it doesn't take, then try pc Odin. But like I said, I use CWM exclusively for modems.

Thank you for keeping us posted on your progress. Sprint/Boost/Virgin Mobile should just link to this forum in their communities for all tech support issues. It's faster, better info, and way friendlier. And wow it beats the heck out of going into their stores. I remember when Garwynn would post in the Sprint forum for the E4GT, and his input was far better than the Sprint monitors.
