Choices... - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a upgrade and Im wondering which phone to get. I like the s3 a lot. Especially the new touchwiz. But I don't like that it could be glitchy and a cheap build. Plus I have had my note for about 6 monthes and I have had some screen problems like the weird ruff spots on it. And I don't want to have the same problems again with the s3. Also is the overheating fixed? I don't want to root this phone (atleast for now) I just want a nice clean reliable and custom experience. Also is the retina display noticeably better? If you have had any problems with your s3 please tell me. Any opinions will be helpful. I'm pretty open minded right now.

U got 3 choices.. gs3, ip5, one x..
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium

Exactly. I don't know much about the iphone5 and one x can you list some pros and cons? That would be greatly appreciated.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Best one is the gs3 cause the one x is older and dosnt have expandable storage or a super amoled or as great dev support and dont get me started with the i****onmyself 5

Save it for the Note 2.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium

The note is great its just a tad to big. The 4.8 inch screen of s3 is great size for me. But I have heard it has a number of problems like overheating and its fragile compared to other devices or so I've read. A HUGE pet peeve I have is when the plastic battery door creaks and squeaks. Is that apparent on the g3? And if it does, how well do those metal doors on eBay work?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

One more thing. Will the g3 run smooth and reliable without modifing it? I want to use it right out of the box with the least amount of problems as possible
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Never had a problem with my backdoor or overheating and yes its perfectly stable with stock
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Are all the us carrier versions the same spec wise?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Depends.
If by "overheat" you mean getting uncomfortably hot, that only happens when you play intensive games like NOVA3 for extended periods of time.
Backdoor creak has never happened to me, but my buttons on the side creek occasionally.
As for your options, honestly the One X doesn't look shabby, but remember that there is less development in that sector, and that the SGS3 has plenty of devs.
As for the iPhone 5, I can tell you from my experience-- that if you enjoy Android, stay away from iOS unless you want to dumb yourself down to a trained monkey. That's my biggest problem with iOS, it's made for extremely simple people. Jailbreaking can't fix the nature of that OS, and that made me dump my iPhone.
In my opinion, I think you should get the SGS3. Build quality won't reach the iPhone 5's, but other then that you won't have any regrets. Besides, you can always exchange.
Goodluck bud!
PS: All US Carrier models are the same, besides the radio. Same Dual Core A-15's @ 1.5GHz.

The main problem I have with the s3 is build quality, reliability, accessories. The iPhone 5 IA built so nicely it makes me feel like it's actually worth 200-300 dollars. The s3 just doesn't give me that quality feel.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Is there noticeable lag on the att g3?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app

Mine is lag free

IPhone 5 is also over hyped. You're paying for materials and branding, not quality of product.

Me being me I wouldn't buy any phone but an iPhone 5 right now. Value is too high. Buy that and trade for SGS3 plus cash!

I've had my S3 since early July, naked screened, and when i wipe the slight smudges off of it from my fingers, it shines like the day i bought it.
As for the battery door.... yea, i'm pretty sure the only people you'd hear about it being squeaky or cheap from are the iPhone 5 Republic. To them, anything plastic is sh*t anymore. I'd hate to have seen how they chose a phone 6+ years ago, when very few phones even used a THIN metal shell, and smartphones were limited to Windows Mobile and Blackberries basically. I never hear a noise from it, and it's far from cheap feeling. It's actually Polycarbonate plastic.
I've had it running a custom ROM since i'd say just under a month into having it.... but i still tend to stick to the tweaked stock roms more than CM10 stuff, simply because i like the TouchWiz camera. Runs fantastic.

Now Im reading about loose power buttons and even one guys supposedly fell off. OS and screen size of the s3 combined with the build quality, reliability, and retina display of the iPhone 5 would be a fantastic phone.

Considering Gnex

I'm coming from an LG revolution on Verizon, ill admit it's plagued with issues. The main reason I liked it was locking in my unlimited 4g data, and it handles wifi tether somewhat well. Anyway
Seeing prices on an off contract Verizon GN ($200-300) makes me consider buying one outright to replace. Doesn't help my revolution has a crack in the glass (not screen). Are there any considerations I should make beyond what I find reading out of reviews and going by user experiences? I'm so far happy with all that I'm seeing, and the caveats aren't big for me, such as omitting Google wallet and it having a pentile display. Ill bet it's miles ahead of my revolution (plain LCD 800x480). I have the extended battery for my revolution and will most likely soon after buying a GN go for the same, but I want to also hear from the xda community. Thanks all in advance.

Do it. Seriously. Its a great time to be holding a gnex.
But definitely get some form of screen protection immediately. Preferably a case of some kind, as this phone is like a wet bar of soap.

Nah. I used to use the dual incipio case, but the slimness just cannot be covered up! Just slap a screen protector and you're golden... unless you're really clumsy. But yes, get the GNex, flash Jelly Bean, and you will be convulsing on the ground struck by awesomeness (if that makes sense? )
I just got my gnex from eBay. And this phone is so awesome! I am coming from a epic touch 4g where the phone specs should be a slight wash but I am digging this phone sooooo much more

This phone pwns!!
So much development too.
The phone is great. A few days with it and you'll wonder how you ever lived with a smaller screen.
The stock experience isn't bad, but unlocking the boot loader and rooting couldn't be easier so you'll be up and running with new Roms all the time.
I'm quite enjoying mine, but it is slick and has a tendency to want to slide out of your hand. Get a case and an extended battery.
It does get warm near the top when browsing the net but its a big deal. Anyway off to work I go, get the damn phone you'll have no regrets.

Thanks all for the support! Forgot just how free and open nexus devices are. Is there a particular extended battery and case go for? I noticed an off brand 3800mah with cover (same company also makes suitable cases) for $20, didn't look like a half bad company at least. I know batteries can be hit or miss. Also, does the (insert power control widget w/wifi tether button) trick still work for that? Atm I use wifi tether and by sheer luck it works in AP mode, vs adhoc, which I much prefer. Also any particular big pros to rooting besides jellybean? I only really rooted my revolution to remove bloat, extend battery and use wifi tether. Afaik with the nexus, there's no particular bloat being vanilla android, battery is more solid than my phone, and if that tether trick works then no root needed for that with what I'm reading.

DON'T BUY SKETCHY BATTERIES!!!
Buy only genuine Samsung extended battery or from a somewhat legit company, like Mugen power.
Sketchy batteries present a high risk of breaking your phone.

The we don't have this or that threads are people just being nitpicky #FirstWorldPains?
It's an amazing device.... the screen is beautiful 5.55" of a NONPENTILE Super AMOLED, stellar battery life. The quad core exynos CPU and jelly bean makes the user experience super fluid. People are also saying that the phone is too big but personally that's why I like it so much - it makes my old iPhone4S look like a toy.
After 8 hours of ownership, screen size is my fav feature so far.

Pixel density is lower but gs3 is pentile I believe. This has some hybrid pixel arrangement. Though, I never saw a gs3.

Honestly I think I'm still in partial shock that I'm walking around with a Quad Core in my pocket. There's something ridiculous about that... also the display and once Sprint LTE kicks in in SF, I'm going to be lording it over my colleagues.

Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Best feature this phone has is Android. Hands Down.
Slap a giant screen on an iPhone and it still is tied to iOS. Can't fix that one.
But on the serious side, the best feature to me, is the marriage of a Large screen and the extra sensitive S Pen. The large screen is great, but anyone can do a large screen. And an S Pen is great too, but it would be crap on a screen any smaller than 5" or so. Can you even imagine trying to use an S Pen on a screen the size of iPhone?
Everything else that Sammy did to make the S Pen and Screen marriage work well is important too, as without all the other pieces, this phone would leave something to complain about.
-Waitin on multiscreen, CP
Awesome screen, awesome battery, so much horsepower and gps that really works (coming from ET4G that never locked)...

Will you ever own a "normal" sized phone again?

This may be a repost, but if you don't feel like repeating... Don't lol.
I've been with my Note 2 for about 3 weeks now and this is truly one of the best "first experiences" with a mobile device I've had. I've been rocking a screen in my pocket since the old Windows "Palm top" days. Remember those Windows CE devices that looked like tiny laptops? I Even had a compact flash 56k modem (maybe 28.8?). Now that was the sh*t.
So yeah maybe some of the "first" mobile devices back then did blow me away, but man I freakin love this phone!
I picked up and played with my Evo3D and I just dont think I could ever go back. Holding a "normal" sized phone just feels inferior. Not to mention having the Spen. I "grew up" using a stylus so having it is just a huge bonus. Granted a good multitouch, capacitive touch screen is great and practically makes a stylus unnecessary. It's still great to have it when you want it.
So how about you? Can you go back to a 4.0-4.5 inch screen? Or are you a permanent convert?
Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using Tapatalk 2

I was going to wait for the gs4 but I'm so happy I made my move to this device. And by the looks of it that device is only going to be a 1.8ghz quad core with no Spen and smaller anyway so I don't think I'm going to regret not waiting lol! I've been at 1.8 since the day I bought it.

I dont think I could go back to a 4.5 or 4.75 screen. I could see myself trying out the GS4 just because it should have a 5" screen. I love my Note and the screen. I don't think I could go smaller but if I had to, a 5" screen would be my limit. And the only reason I would consider that is because occasionally the Note does not fit my shirt pockets lol.

I don't think I can.. I still keep my Evo LTE as a back up and from time to time I activate it to play with some roms and use it for a day or two and I can't wait to use the Note 2 again lol
I was an iPhone lover all the way. Got a new one every 2 years and was just now waiting for the next one to come out and I was going to buy it but then I saw the NOTE and in 5 seconds I had made up my mind to buy it and sell the iPhone. Bear in mind it wasn't JUST an iphone for I have a Macbook Pro, Apple TV, iPod docs, and so on..........but it was gone in a flash and I could never buy a phone smaller than this one, the Note 2. I also picked up a Note 1 I got brand new in the box, unopened for only $125 and threw it on another plan.
I do have an S3 which is almost as big but I am here just to find out how to root it and then I am going to sell it on a forum in my home city although its a great phone, its not as big as the note so i wouldn't keep it
Yes, its got to be a big screen all the way

If you want a phone that runs hot, try the Evo3D. I swear, if my heat ever went out in my house, all I had to do was drill the processor in that for a few minutes. Eeeeeverything. Seriously. This phone is nothing short of amazing.
Or maybe it's because I was in purgatory with an HTC Sensation for 2+ years. The Sensation was so bad, I almost broke down and upgraded to an SGS4 when my contract was up. But I held out for three more months knowing the GN3 would come "soon". Longest three months ever.
But if I had to highlight something great about the GN3, it would be the battery life, performance and screen. Yea ok, those are three things but you really can't just pick one good thing to say about this phone.
The screen for sure. I don't have my Note 3 yet (ordered on Negri Electronics last night) but from playing with it in store that screen outshined my Note 1 screen by a ton, much better color and white balance while having impossibly small pixels. That screen alone seems worth the upgrade.

But if I had to highlight something great about the GN3, it would be the battery life, performance and screen. Yea ok, those are three things but you really can't just pick one good thing to say about this phone.

Damn lol, you must be the happiest person on earth. The sensation was truly a piece of garbage and you came from that? You went from zero to hero!
My girl did the same upgrade, she is in love with this phone!!

The screen, obviously, and the IR port. I have been missing having an IR port since my treo days, it's about bloody time that technology made a comeback.
