Yesterday night I've updated Viber, and since the update the proximity sensor is always on, and glowing red, even with screen off. I've tried reboot and everything, nothing helped. I even wanted to do hard reset, but fortunately I've found it with google, that Viber causes it. After exiting Viber it is working ok.
Yes, I am experiencing the same problem with Viber on my Galaxy S3 since I installed the update yesterday. If I quit Viber, the sensor turns off, but then I'm unreachable on Viber. I hope that problem will get fixed soon.
Looks like you're right.
I wonder when Viber will release a version that works properly?
Having the same issue on my HOX, proximity light is always on until I chose [exit] from within Viber.
I just send a bugreport to Viber about this, maybe some others shoud do this too...

Hello everyone!
I just rebooted my HOX in SAFE MODE, that way it doesn't run any apps downloaded from the playstore. In safe mode, the proximity sensor's little red light was off, as it normally would be.
As soon as I reboot the phone and exit safe mode, the red light is on again at all times.
This issue appeared only yesterday and I installed 3 or 4 apps, so I deleted them all trying to find the culprit, reboted, and nothing happened.
I was starting to get a little worried.... But then, you guys mentioned viber and i remembered that last night I updated viber through the playstore! And viber is to blame!
All in all, great news! I thought my phone was broken. Now let's wait for a new update that corrects this.
hanks!

Indeed, thats why I posted a link to their "about" page which lists their e-mail, Facebook and Twitter

Wizard, you're a genius. I was starting to get paranoid. Thought something might be wrong with my beast (HTC One X). Wish I could click "Thanks" a hundred times.
Thanks man.
I love xda thanks for posting this. Was wondering why the light had all of sudden turned on..
Have sent email to viber reporting it
me too
yup, definitely viber. wonder why... thanks for the heads up. i thought it is broken
Well I guess it uses the proximity sensor to detect whether you are holding the phone to your ear during a voice calls (I haven't tested this to see if it works; last time I was on a Viber call it didn't work, but it was also dark). For some reason they forgot to turn it on and off at the right time.
thanks
Thanks for this thread. I had just put my first custom ROM on my HOX and was getting worried that I had messed it up.
Hopefully Viber will get rid of this issue - I reported the issue to them as well.
Fixed
There's an update on Google Play that addresses this.
Proximity Always On
I tried upgrading to Lolipop 5.1.1 using two different ROMs in my HOX but both shows the same problem of proximity sensor always being on even withoug installing Viber. So I have to dial a call and after the call is deactivated the proximity sensor stays off but again after some time it lights back on even though the device is in standby mode. Some help here..
Related
My DHD has problems with the proximity sensor. I returned the device to the vodafone store (Netherlands), and they changed the device for a new one that worked.
Today, 1 day later, my second DHD is now having the exact same problem with the proximity sensor.
When I make a call, the screen immediately goes black, and the device no longer responds to any button (not even the power button on top). The ony way to get the device back to life is by removing and reinserting the battery.
Video of the problem
When I receive a call, the screen stays unlocked, even when the device is placed against my ear, so I end up with my ear pressing the active screen....
I've read more complaints about this exact problem on the tweakers.net forum. It is still unknown whether this is a hardware of software failure.
UPDATE
The problem seems to be related to the lightsensor, when holding a locked DHD in front of a bright light source, the device wil unlock (as long as you keep it in front of the light).
It might be, that when used in bright daylight a DHD will function properly.
Also, when calling using the headset, the problem does not occur. When inserting a headset in a "locked" DHD, it will wake up.
UPDATE2
Some facts, to "bust" some myths about the problem:
- It seems the problem can happen on all DHD's, not just devices with a particular S/N, software version, carrier (telco) or color.
- It has something to do with the light sensor (which is the same sensor as the proximity sensor) since the device unlocks when held in front of a bright lightsource, some users claim their device works well, as long as they are in daylight.
- The DHD uses a CM3602 proximity/light sensor, the same as a regular Desire
- The problem might not occur immediately after purchase, sometimes it takes a few days before it starts, thus switching your DHD for a new one might only solve your problem for a few hours/days (this is what happend to my second and third... yes third device)
Seems like the same kind of problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811282
Exactly the same post. Nice detail that I'm also a Dutch user bought it at a Vodafone store.
So, that's at least 3 devices reported with this problem.
Is there a way to turn off the proximity sensor? This would mean I have to turn the screen off manually when I make or receive a call, but that way, I don't have to reset the device every time I make a cell
Maybe you guys have found why it failed the google test ?
1-2-3 from the first stock - that is an failure that will come back to all of us...
did you try contact HTC ??
I wouldnt be very worried tbh, this is surely software related else they wouldnt release any batch of cellphones and delay the release for more than just a few weeks.
Can you make a Video and load it up on Youtube?
If we have a video it´s much easier to show HTC the problem... maybe we can load this video up on facebook to the HTC page...
Really bad if this failure concerns all DHDs. But why 3 devices?
I only count LeonM1234 and WizardX?
Edit: Ah I see 2x LeonM1234 and 1x WizardX. Forget this post

A lot of HTC phones have a similer problem. Its S/W related (the desire had it when it was first out e.g. it the screen used to go black and not re-light untill you placed it on a table or the other person hung up)
I would be suprised if 3 phones have the same fault unless it SW related :-D
HTC's new Windows phone seems to have a similar error with the proximity sensor:
As I'm a new user I'm not allowed to post a working link. I try to write it so the system accept it.
www . techeye.net / mobile/one-day-after-launch-event-windows-phone-bug-spotted
If this turns out to be true it's more hardware related than software, isn't it?
i think to cancel my DHD order until that issue will check.

The video camera function on my camera is no longer working and I’m not sure why. This phone is less than 5 weeks old and I have already taken videos with it. This upsets me because I have a 4 month old that I love to record especially when it comes to his firsts. The led flash light comes on when I push the video button, the screen switches and freezes. The message saying error prompts and when I close the camera, the led light will remain on until I reopen the camera. Hopefully you can help me figure this out, many thanks!

Most don't need to update their modem and if you installed software that modifies how your phone works, you might try turning them off or uninstalling them to see if they are the cause of your problems.

u could try booting in safe mode and test if theres any app or tweak that is causing it. or u could enter Service / Test / Hidden functions by dialing *#0*# on your phone dialer and u gonna get to the service mode and check camera itself. also theres another one of those USSD codes that brings u to check the phone gadgets hardware /firmware version to see if it same as the camera app... u could also do a full factory restore from recovery screen if nothing else works remember to do a backup first @ titanium backup.. or if you have fair tech skills u could remove the back cover and remove the battery plate and check if tje battery connectors are in place im sure u could find a note 3 tear down video around.. i had the same problem but with the frontal camera and ended up been the camera was defective and replaced it and worked like charm
I know this thread is kinda old, but since it is on the first page on google's query, I'll post a solution here (found on another site).
The solution is to turn off the phone and remove battery for 10-20 seconds. This should resolve the issue.
Some users report that the issue occurs when you charge your phone via PC or laptop USB port. So, to avoid this, prefer original charger.
thanks
thank you for replying even if the post is old! it simply worked while i was about to sell my phone ! good thing i saw your reply first!
Did you ever find a fix?
I've been smashing my head over this to no avail. Prior to side loading 8.1, when my phone rang the caller and swipe up/down would appear on the lock screen, now it rings, but nothing on the lock screen till I wake it with the fingerprint sensor. Did I miss something? Was this changed? I've been through the settings and still can't see anywhere that I missed. This a security feature so no one can see who's calling till you hit the sensor? Any feed back would be appreciated.
I agree surprised more are not annoyed...lol

I tested incoming phone calls with and without bluetooth, and came to the same result. Since it's very annoying for the screen to not turn on, I ended up making a macro with Macrodroid to turn the screen on when a call comes in. This workaround will be sufficient for me until Google fixes the bug.
I posted on this same issue last week. It's the last update to Google Phone app that broke this. I don't have the time to report it to them...so hopefully it gets fixed!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2-xl/help/google-phone-update-bug-t3718424
*Edit- To fix(?), uninstall the phone app and it will remove the update. Should work then. Of course you won't be able to use Duo for video calling within the dialer...but I couldn't care less about that.
I just had this happen yesterday. Here is a work around with Tasker and Secure Task to wake screen on incoming call.
Import it in Profiles tab in Tasker and make sure you have Secure Task and have it configured with adb.

This may be related to the Proximity Sensor bug introduced with 8.1. Do you have a screen protector on your device? Does it cover the PS?

It started for me on the Google Phone update to version 15 on Dec. 14th. I never had this issue on 8.1 that I did the OTA sideload when I got my phone on Dec. 4.
My proximity sensor is fine. Even with always on display, AOD goes off in pocket and turns back on when I pull it out. On a phone call the screen blanks when I put it to my ear and wakes when I pull it away from my head.
Yep -- I just ran into the problem today as well. I've got 8.1.0 on my Pixel 2 XL, and I get this behavior (display not waking up for incoming call) when connected via Bluetooth -- to my car, headphones (Sennheiser PXC 550) or to my Jabra Speak 710 BT speakerphone.
I considered trying Drupe or Truecaller, but then I read that packet sniffing tests show them sending your contacts data off their servers...so I think I'll wait for a fix from Google. Really annoying. There are a couple of threads on this in Google's product forums / Pixel User Community:
https://productforums.google.com/fo...QEn6fH0OI;context-place=forum/phone-by-google
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/phone-by-google/hdmLGWSMhSM;context-place=topicsearchin/phone-by-google/category$3Adevice-performance%7Csort:relevance%7Cspell:false
So far, Google doesn't appear to be weighing in with any useful commentary. The only "fix" for now seems to be "uninstalling" the phone app (which just reverts back to the OEM installed version) and then not accepting updates to the app. But I've read that this can spin up other issues.

Thanks. If this issue goes on much longer, I'll probably try that. Oddly enough, despite having played with custom Android ROMs and modding over the years, I never used Tasker -- concerned that having the add'l service(s) running in the background around the clock would be more of a battery drain.
I updated my phone app yesterday, and the screen lights up again upon receiving a phone call. I disabled the macro that I made in Macrodroid just to make sure.

I can confirm V16 fixes the phone app and resolves this issue. It's being rolled out gradually, in waves. If you don't see the update on the Play Store, you can download it from APKmirror. Start here:
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-phone/
My issue is the exact opposite..
I answer a call on my bluetooth headset while the phone is in my pocket and buttons start being pressed so I have to take the phone out to lock the screen.
Any quick fixes on this issue?
I'm late to the party, but I fixed this on a Pixel 2 XL in our household. In the system's app settings I force stopped the phone app and cleared the app cache, then I disabled the "Flip to Shhh" feature in the phone app settings. If that fix works for you, please leave a reply so we can validate.

What helps ? Pressing mute/unmute.

I think I've heard somewhere that there is a slight problem with the proximity sensor but that was due to it being ultrasonic rather than infrared. I'm not sure but may be that might be the reason.
hi all,
I have a Mi 10T, Indian version(MIUI Global 12.0.5.0 Stable). I have faced this issue from time to time too.
I did something that helped, I cleaned the LED indicator light hole and ear piece opening, using a bubble gum(please watch a few youtube videos on how to do that and do not get any residue of gum stuck in). Then as said above calibrated the sensor from kernel version settings.
Before the clean up, 6/10 calls I faced this nagging issue. Post clean up, its like 1/10 calls , and mostly that one call is usually whatsapp voice call this happens with and not the google phone app.
hope this helps you guys too.
EDIT : P.S. Are people with stock MIUI dailer/phone and messaging app facing this issue too? Kindly mention your phone's ROM version, I am planning to Install Indonesia version of stock MIUI Rom for my device, to get back Stock MIUI Dialer/Phone and messaging app.
Also, I kind of have a feeling that Google phone and messaging app are not optimised for MIUI ROM and/or this device.

Him I have the very same issue.
Let's admit, Xiaomi note 8 pro is ****.
I've proximity issues and headphone connector issues.
The phone price is great, the quality is not there. Simply it's a big nightmare .
What a big disappoinment.
The issue exists for sure. What a piece of garbage is this phone. :-(
at home the problem appears when I switch the screen to 120hz and disappears at 60hz, it is the 120hz mode that causes concern the infrared sensor does not follow
